Greenwave girls’ tennis finishes strong
by Morgan Frink
The spring sports season is well under way and the girls’ tennis team
is finishing strong. The girl’s coach this year is English teacher, Ms.
Naomi Davies. This is her first year coaching at FMHS; however she
did coach formerly at the University of Florida Gator Tennis Camp.
Davies is a certified professional tennis instructor with USPTA,
(United States Professional Tennis Association).
This years team includes, seniors: Stephanie Fall,
juniors: Shanda Kumar, Vaughn Hayduk, Kara
Cherkin, and Nicole Brillembourg, sophomores:
Emma Joslyn, Katelyn Dorwart, Amelia Wright,
Natalie Underberg, and Jessica Potanovic, and
freshmen: Nicole Underberg. Coach Davies says, the
“biggest challenges are the high schools in Naples
including Barron Collier, Gulf Coast, and Naples.”
These schools may be a challenge, but the girls practice
on their own time in the off season and during official
practice, which “consist of drills, doubles practice, and conditioning.”
This year, the first two weeks of practice determined who would
place in the top five spots on the team. The girls competed with
each other, and the top five spots went to Stephanie Fall, Emma
Joslyn, Katelyn Dorwart, Shanda Kumar, and Amelia Wright.
When asked what the girls’ strategy for winning would be, Davies
said, “Specific strategy depends upon the opponents’ level.” Last
years’ team unfortunately lost its top two players when they
graduated; Muki Kangwa and Elizabeth Andrade, nevertheless
“we have a number of strong players who have returned
providing a solid team for this year as well as future seasons.” said Senior Stephanie Fall
Davies. Good luck to the girls’ tennis team as they wrap up this year’s successful season.
Four years have passed and the time has finally come for the
class of 2009 to walk across the stage and graduate a Greenie.
This is a time of excitement and anticipation as the seniors
prepare to go their separate ways. Seniors take what they have
learned about themselves and life and diverge onto different paths,
each path becoming a part of what makes them who they are.
On Saturday, June 6, 2009, graduating seniors and families will
congregate at the Lee Civic Center. The center is located about
three miles East on Bayshore Road at 11831 Bayshore Road,
North Fort Myers, Florida, 33917. Graduation will begin at 2 p.m.
Tickets are not required, seating is on a first come, first serve basis.
IB speakers for this year’s graduation will be Michael Bauman
and Haley Hudler. Congratulations to the Class of 2009.
This year’s prom theme will be based on the movie Casablanca. The date is set for May 2
from 9:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. and will be held at the Harborside Event Center downtown Fort
Myers. The color theme is red, white, silver, and black, so dress to the nines for this special
occasion for juniors and seniors. To dress for the theme, look to Humphrey Bogart for inspiration
with his Fedora hats and trench coats and to Ingrid Bergman for her classic 1940’s style.
Greenwave Seniors will wave goodbye...
Yes, a student took that photo!
Senior Dan Stewart, a student in IB Photography is the artist that captured the amazing
photograph of the Florida Gator quarterback, Tim Tebow in the middle of one of his “jump passes.”
Dan captured the image during the Florida LSU game during the 2007 season. The Gators
went on to win that game. “Part of it is luck, part of it is knowing the game and knowing when
the pass might happen, and having the technical knowledge to carry it off,” explained Dan.
“I used a Canon 20D camera with a 300mm telephoto lens.” The image is unique because
many professional photographers have missed Tebow when his signature pass is made.
Dan has a copy of the photo signed by both Gator Coach Urban Meyer and by Tim
Tebow. Another copy of the photograph is displayed in the Gator Athletic Office. You can
email Dan about purchasing a copy of the awesome photo at: Dandan1046@mac.com.
2009 prom theme to be based
on classic movie
by Catherine Head, Nicole Doyle, and Danielle Chini and heart-pounding suspense, this 1942
movie is sure to inspire a great prom theme.
“If that plane leaves the ground and
you’re not on it, you’ll regret it. Maybe
not today. Maybe not tomorrow. But soon
and for the rest of your life.” This is a
quote from the famous movie, Casablanca.
This classic movie tells the tale of Rick
Blaine, an American in Casablanca, Morocco,
who runs a popular night club in the 1940’s.
During World War II, Europeans used
Casablanca as an escape to America. In the
movie, Rick crosses paths with an old flame,
Ilsa Lund. Lund and her husband need Blaine’s
help getting papers to escape the city and further
their efforts with the European Resistance.
As WWII continues, complications set in
and danger heightens in Casablanca. Rick
finds himself getting caught in the middle
of a murder investigation and must decide
if he will help his former love and her
husband escape the Moroccan police and
the Gestapo. Filled with memorable lines
FMHS says goodbye to senior SGA officers
by Morgan Frink photo by Louie Mausser great.” Historian, Carl Rios said, “Either when
It’s that time of year again. Yes, that’s
right, senioritis is in full swing! Not to
worry though, graduation if just around the
corner. As the class of 2009 reflects back
on this year, they will no doubt remember
the wonderful activities and events that
SGA (student government association)
has held to make the year great!
The big events SGA planned this year,
with the help of Ms. Kirk, the club’s advisor,
were: Homecoming week, Toys for Tots,
Pasta for Pennies, the SGA banquet, the
elections for the 2009-2010 school year,
the freshmen social, winter movie night,
Taste of the Greenies, Greenie Growl,
Mr. Greenwave, and they assisted in the
Sam Sirianni night/memorial dedication.
According to SGA seniors, when asked
what their fondest memory of SGA was,
President, Natalie Watson said, “I’ve
always loved working with other people
to host school events and or community
service projects, but I’m so happy with
the outcome of the Homecoming. All
of the time we put in to decorating paid
off — people were talking about them
for weeks after!!” Vice president, Jillian
Moore, said, “The results of homecoming
week this year. After putting so much work
into planning the events and decorations of
the dance, seeing it all come together was
I went to deliver
the toys to the
elementary school
for Toys for Tots.
The children were
very happy, and
I was blessed to
see that, or when
I saw the finished
H o m e c o m i n g
decorations. I was
very proud of our
reps and officers.”
When asked
what they would
change, Natalie
Watson said,
“Sometimes I wish
SGA members
wanted to be
more involved,
and didn’t just
sign up for things
because they
have to. I understand people have busy
schedules, but the club thrives on the
involvement of its members.” Jillian Moore
commented, “It all turned out great—there
isn’t much I would change.” Carl Rios said,
“I wish I could’ve given more time to SGA.”
What are SGA seniors going to miss the
most? Natalie Watson says, “Working with
Ms. Kirk and the bond I have formed with
SGA members. As well as getting to work
on a business-type level with friends.”
Jillian Moore says, “Being involved in the
school activities.” Carl Rios felt, “There is
a hate/love sentiment towards Homecoming
Week. It’s very stressful because you have
to organize a week’s worth of events and
your own matters as well. But at the same
time the events start, you enjoy them
even more because of the hard work.”
Now that the year is almost complete, when
asked if they would recommend this club,
Natalie said, “Definitely! It gives you a sense
of responsibility while getting to meet tons
of new people and you always know what’s
going on!” Jillian said, “Yes” because “it
helps you stay involved in the school and class
activities.” Carl said, “Yes”, because “being
selected by your classmates to be in this group
is a really special thing. You represent your
class and ultimately your school. The Reps and
Officers participate in activities that improve
our school and the community. Being in SGA is
Senior SGA officers: Michele Dueease, Carl Rios, Barbara DePena, Brittany Idlette,
Natalie Watson, and Jillian Moore
also good motive for serving and leader roles.”
SGA would without a doubt not ran as
smoothly as it did, had it not been for the
advisor, Ms. Kirk. According to Ms. Kirk, “I
absolutely loved being the SGA advisor this
year! This was my first year having the group
entirely under my wing, and for that reason,
this year will always stand out in my memory.
I had wonderful SGA officers to work with;
they made my role more than enjoyable!”
When asked about her favorite activity
the club put together, it proved to be the
same as the reps’ and officers’. She said,
“Homecoming Week was my favorite
activity this year—probably because so many
hours of blood, sweat, and tears went into
making ‘“Casino Royale’ a giant success!”
With the mention of next year’s SGA
seniors, Ms. Kirk says, “The seniors next
year will be great; I have some very talented
and dedicated juniors ready to step up and
take the wheel, so I’m confident the ’09-’10
school year will be a great one for SGA.” Next
year, the current SGA president, Natalie, plans
on “attending UF in the fall (Go Gators!!) to
major in some field of mass communications.
(Most likely public relations) I hope to join
a service organization there or their SGA.”
Jillian’s plans for next year are to “major
in nursing at the University of Florida.”
Carl says, “I am attending the United
States Military Academy at West Point.”
On a final note, Ms. Kirk says, “…my
officers and reps—they are the best!” Goodluck
next year seniors, and thanks for all the
hard work you did to make this year great!
Greenies perform
musical Grease
by Eliza Chamberlain
For this year’s spring musical, FMHS
performs Grease, a very popular musical
and movie known to all ages. The show
takes its name from the 1950’s United States
working-class youth subculture known as the
greasers. Grease was first preformed in 1972
as a play and shortly after the production of
its huge hit musical film premiered in 1978.
This play is set in the year 1959 in a fictional
high school, Rydell High. The musical is
based on the changing times of the 1950’s and
60’s, as Sandy symbolizes the conservative
fifties, her lover, Danny, is the symbol for the
rough and raunchy approaching sixties. As
the play continues the audience follows ten
high school students on their journey through
their senior year of high school as they deal
with love, cars, friendships, and drive-ins.
Fort Myers High first performed this
tantalizing play on April 2-4. Opening night was
a huge success due to the “very talented cast
and crew”, says sophomore Abigail McMahon.
Around 500 people attended the premier event,
crowding the auditorium with a continuous
applause. According to one attendee, Amina
Aouchiche, “The play was very entertaining
and kept the attention of the audience”. Overall,
the play seemed to be a huge success for the
Fort Myers High School Drama Department.
McMahon, who plays the lead roll of
Danny Zuko is played by junior Tyler Bishop
- Dr. Seuss
“I am going to miss seeing Mrs. Ferguson in
Student Affairs the most.”
“ I am going to miss my friends and the
