Feeding<br />

Hope.

Our 2008 - 2009 fiscal year marks 31 years helping to<br />

feed those in need in our service area. This year<br />

we saw a greater need than we've ever<br />

experienced. Our partner agencies - soup kitchens,<br />

pantries, shelters - reported substantial increases in <strong>the</strong><br />

numbers <strong>of</strong> people <strong>the</strong>y serve; many saw <strong>the</strong>ir demand<br />

double. More people sought food assistance due to <strong>the</strong><br />

difficult economy. Many <strong>of</strong> those in need were asking for<br />

help for <strong>the</strong> first time.<br />

Folks like <strong>the</strong> electrician and his family, who moved to<br />

Denver, after <strong>the</strong> rural company where he worked for<br />

many years closed. He hoped <strong>the</strong> move would provide<br />

opportunities for employment. He struggled to find a job<br />

and his wife, who did find work as a cosmetologist, was<br />

diagnosed with breast cancer. With no insurance and<br />

little income, <strong>the</strong>y found <strong>the</strong>mselves suddenly homeless.<br />

He was staying at a men's shelter and his wife and kids were staying at ano<strong>the</strong>r shelter. He<br />

commented, “I thought I did everything right. I worked hard, always provided for my family. We<br />

never needed help; in fact we helped o<strong>the</strong>rs. I never thought we'd be in this situation.”<br />

We learned about <strong>the</strong> electrician and his family’s plight while interviewing about 500 clients for<br />

Feeding America's Hunger in America Survey, a national study performed every four years to get a<br />

pulse on <strong>the</strong> issue <strong>of</strong> hunger. Our staff heard many heart breaking stories. Some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> questions<br />

were difficult for clients to answer. To <strong>the</strong> question “My children were not eating because I just<br />

couldn't afford enough food” we marked “Often True” and watched as <strong>the</strong> parent shook his head<br />

and held back tears. It's hard to believe that, right here in our community, children go to bed hungry<br />

at night and parents skip meals so <strong>the</strong>ir children can eat. But it does affirm our mission and inspire us<br />

to keep doing what we do every day.<br />

And we couldn't do what we do every day if it wasn't for our generous donors <strong>of</strong> time, food and<br />

funds!<br />

This year, we had more volunteer hours than ever before, equivalent to 35 full time employees.<br />

Volunteers helped us distribute food, pack USDA boxes, fill orders, sort reclamation products, help<br />

with <strong>of</strong>fice projects and so much more. We appreciate each and every one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m for sharing <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

time and talents!<br />

We continue to receive food donations from retailers, distributors, farmers and wholesalers, but <strong>the</strong><br />

volume <strong>of</strong> donated food this year did not keep up with <strong>the</strong> increased demand. Luckily, we were<br />

fortunate to add King Soopers, City Markets, Sam's Club and Walmart Supercenter stores to our<br />

Denver's Table <strong>Food</strong> Rescue Program pick-up schedule. The addition <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se new retail donations<br />

could not have come at a better time, adding hundreds <strong>of</strong> thousands <strong>of</strong> pounds <strong>of</strong> nutritious fresh<br />

and frozen meat, dairy, produce and prepared product to our food list, food that would o<strong>the</strong>rwise<br />

be thrown away.

Our fund donors have also continued to give generously. From individuals to corporations and<br />

foundations, gifts <strong>of</strong> cash allowed us to meet our annual budget and continue to be where we need<br />

to be to keep our programs running. For this, we are truly grateful!<br />

Finally and most notably, we wrapped up our 2009 fiscal year by meeting our capital campaign goal,<br />

ending <strong>the</strong> year with our building paid in full. We are extremely grateful to everyone who contributed<br />

to <strong>the</strong> campaign. These donations and efforts made it possible to leverage <strong>the</strong> entire $1.15 million in<br />

challenge grants made to us by our generous friends at <strong>the</strong> Boettcher, Gates Family and Kresge<br />

Foundations.<br />

The pages in this report share many milestones for <strong>the</strong> year and display <strong>the</strong> names <strong>of</strong> some <strong>of</strong> those<br />

who helped make this year's accomplishments possible. Thank you! Toge<strong>the</strong>r, we can make a big<br />

difference. And that difference is felt every day by our neighbors in need: a hot meal for a child after<br />

school, a tote filled with healthy food to help a senior through <strong>the</strong> month, a truckload <strong>of</strong> nutritious<br />

food taken back to a shelter to feed battered women and children with no place else to go. It is all<br />

possible because <strong>of</strong> your generosity!<br />

A green-eyed psychiatric patient, a grandpa not-so-fresh<br />

FBR hosts a fun-filled Murder Mystery Dinner<br />

where participants join forces at <strong>the</strong> Curtis Hotel,<br />

to solve a murder and raise needed funds.<br />

As part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> nationwide NFL “Click for Cans” Promotion,<br />

Campbell's Chunky Soup donates 1,000 cans <strong>of</strong> soup to<br />

FBR. Kids from FBR Member Agency, Bronco's Boys and<br />

Girls Club construct football <strong>the</strong>med creations from <strong>the</strong><br />

cans. Afterwards, <strong>the</strong> kids enjoy soup for dinner.<br />

For <strong>the</strong> past 4 years, Lift Up America has partnered with<br />

Tyson <strong>Food</strong>s Inc. & Kroenke Sports to help bring <strong>the</strong> gift <strong>of</strong><br />

food to <strong>the</strong> less fortunate in Metro Denver. 15,000 pounds <strong>of</strong><br />

chicken is distributed at Dick's Sporting Goods Park and<br />

Dom and Jane and Mix 100.3 host <strong>the</strong> 10 <strong>Annual</strong> Charity<br />

Marathon for FBR. After two days on <strong>the</strong> air, <strong>the</strong>y raise enough<br />

money to provide 6,887,880 meals for neighbors in need.<br />

300 turkeys from Will Smith, 4,600 pies from Village Inn<br />

and 47,000 pounds <strong>of</strong> onions from Sakata farms help<br />

make <strong>the</strong> holidays brighter for many.<br />

The entire Colorado Rapids team and over 100 guests ga<strong>the</strong>r<br />

at Splitz Bowling Center in Westminster for a night <strong>of</strong> food,<br />

drink, prizes, socializing and some serious bowling. FBR brings<br />

a few teams to join in <strong>the</strong> festivities and accepts a check for<br />

$1500 as a result <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fundraiser.

After 18 years <strong>of</strong> dedicated service to <strong>Food</strong> <strong>Bank</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Rockies</strong>, Barbara Arko, Vice President <strong>of</strong> Development,<br />

retires. Barbara was responsible for overseeing all fundraising<br />

activities, board member recruitment and annual, capital and<br />

endowment campaigns. She also served as FBR's interim CEO<br />

in 2002. Barbara wore many hats for <strong>the</strong> organization and did<br />

a remarkable job in each position she held. We will miss her!<br />

to help agencies fill <strong>the</strong>ir orders and to take on any o<strong>the</strong>r task<br />

asked <strong>of</strong> him. 9NEWS chooses him as one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir 9 Kids Who Care<br />

winners for 2009.<br />

Hunger in America 2009, a nationwide research study, kicks <strong>of</strong>f. Over <strong>the</strong> next four months, we visit 42<br />

agencies and interview 500 clients. Every four years, Feeding America member food banks across <strong>the</strong><br />

U.S. participate in <strong>the</strong> study to gain data to better understand how hunger affects our citizens.<br />

The 17th annual National Association <strong>of</strong> Letter<br />

Carriers Stamp Out Hunger <strong>Food</strong> Drive has<br />

letter carriers around Colorado busy picking up<br />

food donations from mail boxes along <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

routes. Volunteers assist <strong>the</strong> letter carriers by<br />

bringing in and sorting <strong>the</strong> donated food and<br />

packing it into postal bins. FBR trucks pick<br />

up <strong>the</strong> food and return it to our warehouse<br />

where 100 more volunteers sort and box<br />

food to distribute to agencies.<br />

When <strong>Food</strong> <strong>Bank</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Rockies</strong> moved into<br />

our current facility in 2006, we knew <strong>the</strong> need<br />

for food assistance was increasing. Expansion<br />

was necessary if we were to continue nourishing<br />

those less fortunate in our community.<br />

Thanks to contributions <strong>of</strong> time, talent and<br />

resources, <strong>the</strong> tireless work <strong>of</strong> our staff, board<br />

and many volunteers and <strong>the</strong> incredible<br />

generosity <strong>of</strong> this community, <strong>Food</strong> <strong>Bank</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Rockies</strong> meets <strong>the</strong> goals <strong>of</strong> our capital<br />

campaign and starts <strong>the</strong> new fiscal year<br />
