Sr. Catherine M. Ryan
Executive Director
A Message from Our Executive Director
To a child who cannot safely be at home--due to abuse, neglect, substance
abuse or other challenges--hope looks like a safe and caring home in which the youth learns life
skills and engages in the treatment needed to prepare for life as an adult.
To a youth who has found only frustration or failure in school, hope looks like a school that
inspires learning for life.
To a youth who has the gift of living with family, hope looks like Catholic high school and
college scholarships, and after-school athletic programs that may keep them safe through
Maryville CYO.
To a youth who is suffering from a serious mental health episode, hope looks like a comforting
hospital dedicated to healing the intense emotional pain of children, adolescents, and young
adults.
To ensure that hope abides, our staff are learning and implementing the best practices from
child development, clinical, educational, and medical research. Their commitment and
competence is evident in their work with our children and families. Maryville has earned
accreditation for its programs from the Council on Accreditation, the Joint Commission, or the
North Central Association.
To ensure that hope abides, our Board of Directors and Advisory Boards are safeguarding the
mission and telling the story of hope for children and families at Maryville. Friends can hear
the story online, or in radio and television; they can read the story online and in print.
To ensure that hope abides, our donors and volunteers advocate for financial support of the
children. They reach out to funders, host events, and introduce new friends to Maryville.
I thank God for the precious children and wonderful staff, board members, donors, volunteers,
and more friends who make hope abide at Maryville.
Please witness a glimpse of this hope through our Annual Report.
Peace and all good.
Dear Friends,
Sister Catherine M. Ryan, O.S.F.
Maryville -- rebuilding lives, rekindling spirits, and renewing hope. What
does hope look like at Maryville?
To an infant or toddler whose family is in crisis, hope looks like an inviting
nursery that the child’s parents can inspect and select, and when the
emergency has passed, from which the parents can take their child home.
To a youth who is medically fragile, hope looks like a comforting
health-care home in which the parents can learn to care for their child’s
medical needs and then take their child home.
A Message from Our Chairman of the Board
George Rourke
Chairman
Maryville Board of
Directors
During the 1990s, Maryville took on the challenge of caring for pregnant and parenting teens,
teaching parenting skills and guiding them to further their educations -- even college -- and
transforming many into caring parents and participating members of their communities.
Maryville, foreseeing even more changes, acquired Forest Hospital -- now the Maryville Scott
Nolan Hospital -- to expand its services to a full continuum of care for children by providing
innovative programs to treat psychiatric problems, drug abuse, and offer child and family
counseling.
Over the years, more specialized programs were begun to address intellectually disabled boys
and girls; to initiate a school to train these boys and the boys in the substance abuse program
for independent living and jobs; to provide shelter and care for children six years and under
while their families are experiencing stressful situations; and transitional care, between
hospital and home, for children with medically complex problems. Recently, Maryville began
a new program for boys with conduct disorders on the Des Plaines campus where all of this
began in 1883.
Our rewards are many; they come from the children: the simple joy of a smile where there once
was only fear; an infant safely cradled in the warmth of loving arms; the look of
accomplishment after successfully tying a shoe; the pride of winning a medal at a Special
Olympics event; the quelling of a pregnant teenager’s tears; the knowledge that they belong to
a family – the Maryville family.
Our gratitude is great for the sharing of your time, talent and treasure for the benefit of the
children. Together, your generosity and the incredible devotion of a dedicated staff, we see the
continuing fulfillment of the Maryville Mission: rebuilding lives, rekindling spirits and
renewing hope.
On behalf of the children, the staff, and the Board of Directors, our thanks.
George W. Rourke, Chairman
Maryville Board of Directors
Dear Friend of Maryville,
We are extremely grateful for your generosity and continued support of
Maryville.
Our Mission has not changed since the founding of St. Mary’s Training
School for Boys in 1883 – to provide care for children in harm’s way. We
continue in that same vein today. Times have changed. The children have
changed. The problems of the children have changed.
What was once an orphanage has become more and more specialized --
specialized programs for children with very special needs. In the 1980s
it was the introduction of the Family Teaching Model in “family-like”
cottages with highly skilled “parents” overseeing families of children with
strong support from counselors, social workers and consultants. It was
also a time when Maryville began its program to care for and treat cocaineaddicted
newborns innocently addicted because of the mother’s drug habits during pregnancy.

Alumni Spotlight
Shantaye Wonzer
Some arrive in the middle of the night. They may have only a
toothbrush and the clothes on their backs. They may carry
other baggage, though. Many have been abused, others surely
neglected. They may have had a dozen homes in their young
lives, some loving, and many not so loving.
Many of the precious children who arrive at Maryville are
damaged. They need to be cared for, nurtured, repaired-and
loved. Our caring staff welcomes these wonderful
youngsters and treats them as their own children. Maryville
feeds them, shelters them, clothes them, educates them
formally and informally, loves them, and then--in the
twinkling of an eye it often seems--they are gone.
We pray for them, for their success and their futures, and
sometimes they let us know how they’re doing. And
sometimes they return to show us.
Our Pride
Shantaye Wonzer with Chicago Bear
Israel Idonije at the Ed McCaskey
Scholarship Luncheon at the
Maryville Des Plaines Campus.
This past April, one such alum returned to let us know how she was doing. She’s doing just great, thanks
in part to the generosity of the McCaskey family who awarded Shantaye Wonzer the Ed McCaskey
Scholarship. She spoke at our annual luncheon and thanked the McCaskeys and her Maryville family.
There were cheers and there were tears.
Shantaye arrived at Maryville, a 7th grader who had bounced from home to home, so despondent she
“figured trash bags filled with my belongings were just a normal part of life.” In our North Gym, she
spoke to an audience of hundreds on the cusp of her receiving her degree from Bradley University.
“…(Maryville) became a haven from the world I had grown up in and fought to survive…I am certain
that I wouldn’t be the strong, stable, soon-to-be-college graduate I am today if it weren’t for the lessons
learned here, the friends and family I gained and the opportunities I had that led me to choose a path
best suited for becoming a success and not a statistic.”
It has been said it takes a village to raise a child. Maryville, with its various villages, strives each day to
forge lives like Shantaye’s with the help of donors such as the McCaskey family and the thousands of
other supporters and the devoted staff who nurture, treasure, and raise our beautiful children.
Our Public Face
When Stressed Parents Need Help in a Hurry
Mary Mitchell
Chicago Sun-Times
Whatever a parent is going through, a child goes through. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Three
years ago, Maryville Academy opened the Maryville Crisis Nursery, a facility that can take children free
of charge for up to 72 hours. “Our hope is to provide this resource for those who need them, so children
don’t suffer,” explained Sister Catherine M. Ryan, Maryville Academy’s executive director during a tour
last week.“The families that come here, they really care.”
Abused as a Girl, She Returns to Spot of Her Salvation to Help Others
Burt Constable
Daily Herald (Writing about the Maryville Eisenberg Campus)
“Bartlett was really nothing,” she says, remembering that cold January day in 1973 when a Department
of Children and Family Services social worker drove her from a courtroom in Chicago to a state institution
called Herrick House in the wilds of Bartlett. “I felt like this was the boonies.”
More than three decades later, a twist of fate has delivered Kathryn Benton back to those same grounds,
where she volunteers, teaching art to three houses of DCFS girls with intellectual disabilities and mental
illnesses.
Troubled Teens Enjoy the Fruits of Their Vocation
Lisa Black
Chicago Tribune
At first, the boys at Maryville Academy were not sure they wanted to get their hands dirty.
Some arrived at this all-male residential campus in Des Plaines with mental illness, a history of substance
abuse and trauma, which showed itself in behavior outbursts and foul vocabulary. But they had
never seen a potato plant, and curiosity — and the offer of a small paycheck — beckoned.
They now weed gardens and pick vegetables they raised from seed. Some days, they wait in line for a
chance to mow around the 20 raised beds, each 12 feet by 10 feet. And every Thursday they set up a
farm stand on campus and sell produce to Maryville employees. One recent day, they reaped $120.
After Turmoil, Maryville Academy Bounces Back
Bonnie Miller Rubin
Chicago Tribune
But Maryville’s story is more than the comeback of a single agency. Its reinvention also illuminates a
larger, fundamental shift in the way Illinois responds to families in crisis, whittling the number of abused
and neglected kids in state care from 52,000 in 1997 to about 15,580 in October, according to DCFS.
“The system has evolved, and so has Maryville,” said Robert Harris, the advocate for wards of the state.
“I think it’s fair to say that it’s an entirely different place today.”
The Children
Our Public Face
Maryville is a child care organization rooted in Catholic social teaching
Born more than a month premature, Lupita had a tumor that was
blocking her airway. Doctors at Children’s Memorial Hospital operated to
clear as much of her airway as possible since removing all of the tumor
was not possible in a single surgery. Her condition was critical. When
she arrived at the Children’s Healthcare Center, she couldn’t walk, talk
and barely moved at 16 months, a tracheostomy tube sticking out of the
middle of her neck and a gastrostomy tube in her belly. Through loving
and patient care by the center’s nurses, nurses aides and volunteers, little
Lupita began to thrive. She soon learned to crawl, then to walk. She now
dances to music and is talking. These days, Mary Argol, the center’s
director, laughs when Lupita greets her when she arrives for work. “She
points to her wrist and says, ‘Get to work.’” A bouncy toddler who is
beginning to learn to eat yogurt, Lupita is on the cusp of going home. “If
anyone could be called a miracle child,” Mary said, “it’s Lupita.”
When Zamya arrived at the Children’s Healthcare Center, she was scared
and attached to her mother. She cried and wanted her mom to hold her
and not let her go. Her mother worried about Zamya’s health because
her twin was doing everything that a 16-month-old should do. Zamya
was losing weight and everything that her mom fed her failed to stay in
Zamya’s system. Zamya was a “failure to thrive” patient and has
GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) and a severe digestive
disorder, which her mom didn’t understand until recently. She has
gained four pounds since her arrival in August and was 22 pounds in
mid-November. Along the way, the girl with the infectious smile has also
gained a little chutzpah. “I call her Miss Attitude,” said Mary Argol, the
Center’s director. “If she gets upset, she tells me off in baby babble.”
Our mission is to help children and families to reach their fullest potential by empowering
intellectual, spiritual, moral and emotional growth.
7

and dedicated to the preservation of the dignity of children at every age.
James is 17. He arrived at Maryville in August. An intellectually disabled
youth, he viewed his life as a series of disasters: his mother’s death when
he was four; becoming a ward of the state; being moved from home to
home; seeing only failure and dead ends. At Maryville and the Jen School
he has found what was missing since his mother’s passing: love,
encouragement and, with his teachers’ help, the opportunity to express
himself through his artistic abilities. James functions at a seven-yearold’s
level, but his expression on paper with pencil, pen and paint is
more incisive than adults twice his age. A little shy, his easy smile tells it
all: James has found a home, a family and an ability to express himself
through his art.
Our vision is that the children of Maryville will achieve personal and spiritual
fulfillment as they become contributors to their communities and citizens of the world.
In Our Care
Turning your children over to strangers takes courage. And
admitting you need help takes courage. By any measure, Miriam
Mendez is a courageous young woman. Late last year the single mother
was running out of options to take care of her five children—8, 4, 3 and
twin two-year-old boys.“I couldn’t get things done and had no support.
It was very stressful. I heard about the Crisis Nursery from a counselor at
the women’s center near Foster and Cicero,” said Miriam, a 24-year-old
resident of the Jefferson Park neighborhood on the city’s Northwest Side.
At first she was apprehensive. “But once I took a tour of the facility and
met the people there, and saw the kids doing non-stop play in the gym, I
knew it would be great for my kids,” Miriam said. On her first visit, she
dropped off her four youngest children, keeping 8-year-old Raymond
with her. “Now, when I tell them we’re going to the nursery, they say,
‘Let’s go, let’s go.’” Miriam said. “And when I go to pick them up,
sometimes Olivia, Miriam’s three-year-old, will say, ‘No, I’m not
leaving.’”
In memory of Suzanne
Many individual donors -- alumni, friends and staff -- demonstrate their belief in Maryville’s mission by making a
financial contribution, or a gift-in-kind, in support of the children and families in our care. We are honored to recognize
those individuals who made a gift of $100 to $999 between July 1, 2009 and June 30, 2010.
