Long-time swimming coach forwarded for National Award
Kevin Duffin, of Manurewa Swim Club has been put forward to the national
Wattie’s Volunteer Coach of the Year Awards, in the Lifetime Category.
Kevin was nominated for the regional Wattie’s Volunteer Coach of the Year
Lifetime award and was the winner of this category. Of the three regional
winners (Student Coach, Coach and Lifetime Coach), one is selected to be
included in the National Awards and attend the ceremony in November. Kevin
has already won himself a year's supply of Watties products and if he wins the
National award in his category (Lifetime Coach) he will win $3,000 towards
his coaching development or equipment. If Kevin walks away as the Supreme
winner, he will receive an additional $2,000.
Counties Manukau Sport would like to congratulate Kevin on his national
nomination and thank him for lifetime of hard work and commitment that he
has put toward sport in this area. Below is what Kevin's nominator had to say
about him:
"Kevin has voluntarily coached for 40 years! Since he left school at the age of
15 he has coached sport. Kevin’s main sport is swimming where he started
coaching at the age of 15 and continues to coach swimming today at the
Manurewa Swim Club.
The other sport in Kevin’s life is rugby league where he has coached for 20
years with the Mangere East RLFC.
Kevin has been awarded many service badges and medals and was made a
Lifetime Member of the Counties Manukau Swimming Association and also a
Life Member with the Manurewa Swim Club. He has also been the President
of the swim club.
Kevin’s coaching philosophy is that the coach must be reliable and always be
there for the kids. He say’s ‘If only 1 kid turns up for training then I will still
coach him/her, even if it’s only 1 kid they still have my full attention and
time’.
Kevin believes that coaching has helped him as a person. It has taught him
how important it is to show understanding and tolerance. He believes that kids
need to be given time and patience to help them succeed. ‘Everybody starts
somewhere’ he say’s.
He often feels his coaching role has extended to that of a counsellor and friend
and that the bonds he has made are there forever.
Kevin would be an outstanding winner for the Watties Volunteer Coach of the
Year Lifetime Category because he epitomises what a volunteer coach is all
about.
He is hard working, fair, fun and honest and gives openly to others, helping
them to reach their potential."
Dear Counties Manukau,
Swimming Counties Manukau
Would like to thank our Sponsors and funders
I would like to thanks ALL the team from organisers to participants for such
A wonderful meet at the weekend.
We were all made so welcome from the moment we came through the door -from
The pool front office to the overall manager of the officials.
The parade and National Anthem ceremonies made me appreciate why, 25 years
Ago I called NZ HOME. I had to work my passage to become a New Zealander,
And Mangere reminded me of my first encounter with real new Zealanders.
Never before has anyone offered me a toilet break as I timekept. Thank you
For the touch. It was a pleasure to assist such genuinely cooperative
Folk, from the youngest to the oldest who set such a wonderful example to
The younger generations.
It's a pity my son will be too old to return next year, another meet some
Other time, hopefully.
Please pass this message on to ALLTHE TEAM.
Sincerely,
Linda Wiseman (North Shore)
MAKE YOUR OWN SPORTS DRINKS
You may have heard of "isotonic" sports drinks that have been "scientifically developed in conjunction
with top athletes.” But it's very easy to make your own, low-cost carbohydrate drink that is just as
effective! Isotonic means a fluid containing electrolytes and 6-8% carbohydrate. To make your own add
200 ml of concentrated orange juice to 1 litre of water and add a pinch (¼-½ teaspoon) of table salt.
There you have it. A good effect sports drink that has a fraction of the amount of sugar most sports
drinks have. And at a fraction of the price! Pass this onto your club’s members, coaches, and team
managers now!
YOUR PHOTOS WANTED!
We are always looking for ways to make our recently re-launched Counties Manukau Sport website as
dynamic as possible and to reflect the community that we represent. We would like to add a Counties
Manukau Sports Clubs Photo Gallery where your clubs can post photos of your members and your sport.
If you have some photos of your members playing, coaching or officiating in your sport, can you please
email them to me at pennie.ball@cmsport.co.nz If you are sending photos of under-16s, please ensure
that you have permission to publicise the photographs first.
WELCOMING NEW MEMBERS TO YOUR CLUB
It can be quite intimidating turning up to a sports club for the first time. Therefore, it is important for
clubs to be welcoming and informative for new club members, and members’ parents. Clubs should ask
all members (even members from the previous season) to complete a Membership Form with key
information including contact details and medical conditions, particularly for youth members. The
Counties Manukau Sport Club A-Z Manual (available online at www.cmsport.co.nz) has some useful
resource downloads including: Template Parent Welcome Pack, Template Welcome Letter.
