Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord 3 January 6, 2013
Sunday Gospel
When Jesus was born in
Bethlehem of Judea,
in the days of King Herod,
behold, magi from the east
arrived in Jerusalem, saying,
“Where is the newborn king
of the Jews? We saw his star at its rising
and have come to do him homage.”
When King Herod heard this, he was greatly troubled,
and all Jerusalem with him.
Assembling all the chief priests and the scribes of the
people,
he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born.
They said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea,
for thus it has been written through the prophet:
And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah,
are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
since from you shall come a ruler,
who is to shepherd my people Israel.”
Then Herod called the magi secretly and ascertained from
them the time of the star’s appearance.
He sent them to Bethlehem and said,
“Go and search diligently for the child.
When you have found him, bring me word,
that I too may go and do him homage.”
After their audience with the king they set out.
And behold, the star that they had seen at its rising
preceded them, until it came and stopped over the
place where the child was.
They were overjoyed at seeing the star, and on entering
the house they saw the child with Mary his mother.
They prostrated themselves and did him homage.
Then they opened their treasures
and offered him gifts
of gold, frankincense,
and myrrh.
And having been
warned in a dream not
to return to Herod,
they departed for their
country by another
way.
Prayer Shawl Ministry
Knit one, purl two,
love one, comfort two…
This ministry combines compassion and
a love of knitting/crocheting. Persons who
are ill, in need of solace, or who have
suffered a loss, receive a shawl enfolded
in the comforting warmth blessed by
prayer. The group will meet in the
Wooldridge Center Meeting Room on
January 17th at 6:30pm—and the 3 rd
Thursday of each month. We welcome
all levels of expertise in knitting or crocheting. Leaders will help and
support you in creating a shawl. Please contact Susan Klamann at
sklamann@sttheresenorth.org to learn more about this ministry of care.
Watch Me Grow–Month Grow Month 5
Following A Life – Ruthie
“I’m now twelve inches long. Mommy, you felt
me kick didn’t you? This month marks
my half-way point to birth and
being with you and everyone.
From that kick, you know I’m
getting very active. Up to now,
I’ve been swimming with ease
in this watery world, but
I’m big enough now and
strong enough to kick so hard
against the outside uterine
wall that I can dent it. You can
feel me stretch and move.
I’m developing sleep habits, but
you may have to remind me about
this later—sorry about that, so rest while you can! I’m a
quick learner, so I’ll soon learn lots of new habits and fit
right in. It will be so great. Love, Ruthie
St. Basil the Great
(329-379)
Feast Day January 2
--Unknown
Basil was on his way to becoming a
famous teacher when he decided to
begin a religious life of gospel poverty. After studying
various modes of religious life, he founded what was
probably the first monastery in Asia Minor. He is to
monks of the East what St. Benedict is to the West, and
his principles influence Eastern monasticism today.
He was ordained a priest, assisted the archbishop of
Caesarea (now southeastern Turkey), and ultimately became
archbishop himself, in spite of opposition from
some of his suffragan bishops, probably because they
foresaw coming reforms.
One of the most damaging heresies in the history of
the Church, Arianism, which denied the divinity of Christ,
was at its height. Emperor Valens persecuted orthodox
believers, and put great pressure on Basil to remain silent
and admit the heretics to communion. Basil remained
firm, and Valens backed down. But trouble remained.
When the great St. Athanasius (May 2) died,
the mantle of defender of the faith against Arianism fell
upon Basil. He strove mightily to unite and rally his fellow
Catholics who were crushed by tyranny and torn by internal
dissension. He was misunderstood, misrepresented,
accused of heresy and ambition. Even appeals to the
pope brought no response. “For my sins I seem to be
unsuccessful in everything.”
Basil was tireless in pastoral care. He preached twice
a day to huge crowds, built a hospital that was called a
wonder of the world, (as a youth he had organized famine
relief and worked in a soup kitchen himself), and
fought against corrupt business.
From the Pope’s Pulpit and the Pastor’s Pen
I am also repeatedly struck by the
Gospel writer’s almost casual remark
that there was no room for
them at the inn. Inevitably the
question arises, what would happen
if Mary and Joseph were to knock
at my door. Would there be room
for them?
The great moral question of our
attitude towards the homeless, towards
refugees and migrants, takes
on a deeper dimension: do we
really have room for God when he
seeks to enter under our roof?
We are so “full” of ourselves that there is no room left
for God. And that means there is no room for others either,
for children, for the poor, for the stranger. By reflecting
on that one simple saying about the lack of room
at the inn, we have come to see how much we need to
listen to Saint Paul’s exhortation: “Be transformed by the
renewal of your mind” (Rom 12:2).
A blessed new year to all. May
2013 be a year of peace and many
blessings.
Our quarterly St. Therese Book
Club will be meeting in February
and our selection is The Gospel of
Life (Evangelium Vitae) by Pope
John Paul II. Copies are available
at the Parish Office and in the gift
store. The recommended offering
is $10.00. Please join us as we examine this beautiful and
challenging document. We will gather on Monday, February
4th from 7:00-9:00pm in the Wooldridge Center Meeting
Room.
One fine and enjoyable program we have in the parish
is Guess Who’s Coming for Dinner? On the first Saturday
evening of the month, people gather at someone’s home
for a pot-luck dinner. There is no commitment beyond brining
a covered dish and having a good time. It is a very enjoyable
and inter-generational way to bring people together.
I have shared in a number of these dinners and
found that they make for a very pleasant evening. For
more information, please contact Gail Davern at 891-6540
or gaildavern@yahoo.com
If your New Year’s resolution is to spend more time in
prayer, remember that our Eucharistic Adoration takes
place Monday through Friday at our parish from 9:00am to
10:00pm. We still need help covering all the time slots.
Please consider helping out. Even if you cannot commit to
an hour right now, please stop by and make a visit when
you can. For more information, please call Bill at 891-2555,
Lost and Found
Each year, we start off the new year by clearing out
“old items” in the Lost and Found cabinet and drawer
located in the Usher’s Room. Things that we find include
keys and glasses, kid’s toys and books, coats,
hat and gloves, rosaries and prayer books, and tons
of umbrellas. We could go on and on but you get the
idea. Remember, throughout the year, this is the
place to find that missing ‘lost treasure.”
