Two mainstays in the Fox Valley music scene have experienced some changes in their staff lineup. The Fox Valley Symphony Orchestra announced a new executive director last fall, and the White Heron Chorale established a new executive director position, hiring Jeanie Kurka Reimer. Fox Valley Symphony Orchestra The Fox Valley Symphony Orchestra announced a new executive director in September, Roseanna "Rosie" Cannizzo. Cannizzo is responsible for overseeing many aspects of the organization including furthering the artistic goals of the symphony, organizing programs and raising funds. "Fox Valley Symphony is a wonderful organization that does many things very well. I am excited to be a part of a group of people so passionate about orchestra and the community,” Cannizzo says. “It’s been great fun diving into new projects, I go home at night and sit on the couch and think of what else I can do.” Cannizzo has been a part of the Fox Valley orchestral scene for years, first graduating from Lawrence University (LU) with a dual degree in Piano Performance and English to most recently working as the Director of Conservatory Admissions at LU. Cannizzo’s future endeavors as executive director include integrating symphonic players into unknown places in the community, like during the lunch hour at Zuppas, child care facilities at the YMCA and at the Heritage Retirement home. "One of our challenges is to make the community aware of symphonic music and make sure that symphonic music is relevant in our community," Cannizzo asserts. And it looks like Cannizzo is up to the challenge. White Heron Chorale Jeanie Kurka Reimer became the first executive director for the White Heron Chorale this year. As executive director, Reimer will focus on maintaining the organization’s consistent achievement of its mission and financial objectives. “Music is all about the things I value: collaboration, community and enrichment,” Reimer says. “These elements are critical to the success of non-profits and I’m thrilled to join an organization which shares that goal.” Before taking this position, Reimer worked extensively in the field of social justice. Her background includes work in organizational development, donor contact, fundraising, non-profit governance and regional/national leadership for a series of non-profits. Celebrate With Song Hortonville School District trumpets its success in music education The Fox Valley can add another musical accolade to its already burgeoning repertoire. Recently, Hortonville School District was awarded by the NAMM Foundation as one of the “Best Communities in Music Education.” This distinctive honor, given to 179 school districts and schools, acknowledges and celebrates the schools, their administrators, teachers, board members, parents and students for their support of music education. Hortonville High School Band Director and Music Department Chair Greg Forton realizes that this achievement is not just institutional, but an effort resounding throughout the community. “This is a community-wide award, and the reason for that is because we are so strong in our traditions and cultures, and a love for heritage in our area,” Forton says. “It is a tradition in our area to go to the music programs. Everyone in the community is helping out by going to concerts, coming to musicals, fundraising and supporting our music programs.” Fostering a student’s musical education is important for a student’s development because it, “provides an emotional outlet [and] organizes the mind,” Forton ensures. Mary Luehrsen, executive director of the NAMM Foundation agrees, stating, “There is a direct correlation between music education and success in other areas of a student’s life.” Forton thanks communities surrounding the Hortonville School district for enabling them to create such a musical environment. “There are so many wonderful communities in the Fox Valley area,” he says. “This award is not just a reflection of the Hortonville School District, but the Fox Valley community as a whole.” —By Kaitlin Springmier 21 | The Magic of Bill Blagg LIVE!
