Therapeutic Arts
Art can often be fun and whimsical, but it also has the
ability to be cathartic and therapeutic. Many
organizations in Wisconsin have discovered this potential
and are employing art in a therapeutic way during the
coming months.
The Child Life program in the Children’s Hospital of
Wisconsin-Fox Valley uses art to help children cope with
and understand their treatment. Children paint and make
collages with gauze and syringes so that the hospital
equipment is more familiar to them. They also draw
pictures of the operating room so that Child Life
specialists can clear up any misconceptions about what
has happened to them.
Both the Rahr-West Art Museum in Manitowoc and
Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum in Wausau offer
programming for patients with Alzheimer’s and dementia
and their caregivers. The Woodson Art Museum offers
“SPARK!” one Wednesday of each month to help “spark”
The Building for Kids, Appleton.
memories by discussing and creating art. Art Therapist
Stacia Dick-Schuster runs “Creative Expressions” for the
Rahr-West Art Museum to help people activate latent powers of the mind, stimulate
memory and allow for creative expression.
The Building for Kids Children’s Museum in Appleton opens its doors from 8–9am
and turns down the light and noise from exhibits on “Spectrum Saturdays.” This
provides a lower-sensory experience for children with autism and their families.
Taking a turn to comedy, the “Laughter is the Best Medicine” event will bring the
popular Second City improv troupe to the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center on
March 2. Proceeds will benefit ThedaCare patients and their families receiving cancer
treatment and hospice care.
Making Musical
Dreams Come True
If you’ve ever wanted to
perform your favorite song
but been the wrong age,
weight, height, gender or
race, Dream Role is the
musical revue for you.
Directed by UWFox Valley
Director of Theatre Susan
Rabideau and Director of Technical Theatre Erick Gyrion, Dream Role features
an hour and a half of solos and show-stopping pieces from over 80 talented
performers.
"It's just 90 minutes of your favorite music," Rabideau says.
The production will feature both new and old favorites from “Luck, Be a
Lady” from Guys and Dolls to “Popular” from Wicked. It will also feature a
sneak preview from the UWFox Theatre’s next production, Hairspray, running
April 12 –21.
And the students aren’t the only one fulfilling their dreams. Rabideau will
be directing a big number from the critically acclaimed Ragtime, a show she
has never had the opportunity to produce due to the large number of African
American characters.
"It's really exhilarating to hear this amazing music sung by amazing
performers and not be worried about the logistics,” she says.
The production will run from March 1–3 at 7pm with a matinee on March 3
at 2pm. Tickets are available online at uwfox.uwc.edu or by visiting the
UWFox Valley ticket office. Come and watch as performers sing the songs of
their dreams.
Spring will soon be upon us. This means not
only the return of sunlight, but the fabulously popular
Fox Cities Book Festival.
Entering its fifth year, the week-long festival features
readings, panels and conversations all over the Fox Cities
featuring a number of genres both fiction and nonfiction. One
night might see a panel at the Bergstrom-Mahler Museum with the
next morning dawning on a Q&A session with an author at the Radisson
Paper Valley Hotel.
Every year, the festival sees a heady attendance of 15,000
bibliophiles (plus another 10,000 from area schools) that meet in
museums, colleges, libraries and businesses in the Fox Cities, but the
festival has met with success since the start, says Jeff Kuepper, president
of the board for the Fox Cities Book Festival.
“We were really overwhelmed and were very pleasantly surprised at
the initial turnout,” Kuepper says.
So far, the list of confirmed authors includes poet, essayist &
naturalist Diane Ackerman, Wisconsin-born Patrick Rothfuss and awardwinning
author/nationally-acclaimed public speaker Rachel Simon
among a number of others. Meeting beloved authors in person is always
a big thrill for festival attendees, Kuepper says.
“We've all at some point read a book and said, ‘Wow, wish I could
tell the author how much I enjoyed that.’”
One or two events may require tickets, but the rest will be free and
open to the public. Visit foxcitiesbookfestival.org for more information
and mark your calendars for April 11–18 when books will officially be in
season.
Spring 2012 ARTS GUIDE | 9

The Fox Valley is getting a little ‘Hollywood’ this season, hosting two
film festivals in March. The Wildwood Film Festival, a well established
Wisconsin Film Fest will be celebrating its eleventh year, while The Green
Bay Film Festival is getting ready for its second year. Keep your eyes peeled
for some star sightings!
Wildwood Film Festival
What began as two friends searching to screen their feature-length film
has now grown into a well
established film festival that has
screened over 165 films. Even though
this year will be the eleventh time
they’ve hosted the Wildwood Film
Festival, Jason Buss, co-creator of the
Festival, is still shocked at the filmic
quality of the shorts that local
filmmakers have created.
“It amazes me in general, it’s still
amazing, the quality of pieces we see
come our way,” Buss states. “These
short, 15–20 minute pieces we see
are beautiful little pieces.”
What makes the Wildwood Film
Festival unique is that the Festival is
dedicated to everything Wisconsin.
Buss, with co-creator Tom Thorne,
celebrates the passion for cheese,
beer and football that is shared
throughout the state with his
filmmaking friends.
“Whether you live in Hoboken, New Jersey or L.A. or Chicago, if you've
ever called Wisconsin home, we want to show your film,” says Buss. “It’s a
cheer for the home state.”
The Film Festival will be held at the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center in
Appleton on March 3 with four show times (1pm, 3pm, 6pm & 8pm). Tickets
are available for purchase at the Fox Cities P.A.C. Box office.
Green Bay Film Festival
The Green Bay Film Festival has international appeal. Last year alone,
this 3-day film festival attracted individuals from over 16 countries, all in the
name of cinema.
This international affair began as an idea put forth by the Green Bay
Film Society, brought into fruition with help from Northcoast Productions.
Now, the two-year-old fest screens a wide range of films for any audience.
With categories ranging from documentary, Native American and social
issues to children’s films, this festival is bound to please all audiences.
Michelle Tyo-Johnson, the director of business development for
Northcoast Productions, sees the Green Bay Film Festival as a unique
opportunity for film enthusiasts. “It's fun, it's films that you aren't going to
see in a regular movie theater that are truly done by people who love what
they’re doing and love their industry,” she says.
The Green Bay Film Festival hopes to foster aspiring filmmakers dreams
as well. This year, it will host a competition for high school students’ films. In
addition, the Festival will hold seminars that teach aspiring filmmakers how
to fine-tune their craft by learning about anything from screenwriting to film
production.
The Green Bay Film Festival will be held at the Radisson Hotel &
Convention Center in Green Bay on March 23-25. Tickets available online at
gbfilmfestival.org.
Sheboygan Falls
resident Beth Lipman’s
“Gift Ball,” a perplexing
bulbous form constructed
from found objects
encased in caulk, will be
on display at the
Milwaukee Art Museum
this spring. The
Chipstone Foundation
invited 14 contemporary
artists to break from their
usual practices and create an art piece using just one
tool for an exhibition called “The Tool at Hand.”
“Gift Ball” is an obvious deviation from Lipman’s
usual works which use clear glass to re-imagine
Renaissance and Baroque still-life pantings.
A memorable example of this is Lipman’s
“Laid Table (Still Life with Metal Pitcher),” a
dining table overflowing with hundreds of
clear glass representations of urns, pitchers,
floral arrangements, fruit baskets, puddles of
spilled liquid, wine glasses and napkins which
is part of the Milwaukee Art Museum’s
permanent collection.
Lipman says she enjoys working with glass
because the medium imitates life. "Glass is
symbolic of the whole life cycle," she states.
"It comes from a molten place, it can be
shaped, it can break much in the same way
we get sick and die." For “The Tool at Hand”
exhibition, Lipman knew she would have to
find a new medium. “It takes so many tools
to make
anything in
glass,” she says.
Habitat Hole
ongoing. Crawl through a 20ft burrow
animals.
Habitat House
ongoing. A 2/3 scale house that
demonstrates how to protect your
home from unwanted wildlife guests.
The Observation Building
ongoing. Purchase corn to feed the
ducks & geese at the animal care
headquarters of the wildlife Sanctuary.
Inside & outside exhibits.
The Woodland Building
& Habitrek Trail
ongoing. View native Wisconsin
animals such as otters, cougars, wolves,
ravens, white-tailed dear, porcupine &
more. Climb a viewing tower outside
the building to view
deer up close.
Lipman’s
“Gift Ball”
“I would not have been able to conceive the task with
glass.”
When “Gift Ball” was created, the caulk was white,
hiding all the found objects within, but the found
objects will slowly appear as the the caulk cures and
turns clear.
“[“Gift Ball”] was really inspired, I think I will be
using caulk in the future,” Lipman says.
Although Lipman isn’t a Wisconsin native, she’s
proud to call Sheboygan Falls home. “There's a lot of
super great things here,”
she says. At the apex of
the “super great” is the
John Michael Kohler Arts
Center in Sheboygan,
where she has been
coordinator of the artistin-residence
program for
five years. “If [the Arts
Center] was in New York
it would hold its own,”
Lipman claims. “The Arts
Center is so amazing.”
Spring 2012 ARTS GUIDE | 15

Art Thoroughfare
A form of public street art, known as guerrilla art, is impacting the Fox
Cities. The art form affords everyday citizens the opportunity to express
their creative perspective — a privilege that has traditionally been reserved
for an elite few. Guerrilla art pieces are often installed in the stealth of the
night by anonymous artists and can require little to no capital.
“Inevitability public art raises issues of funding,” says Lawrence
University Associate Professor of Art Rob Neilson. “Funding effects whose
point of view is being monumentalized. With guerrilla art, none of those
issues of funding color the project itself.”
Former Lawrence University student Jennifer Gabriele, who conceived
and executed a guerrilla art project during the winter of her junior year,
argues the validity of guerrilla art is found in its ability to reach a wide
audience.
“The fact that [the guerrilla art movement] gets art out in a public
space is huge,” Gabriele says. “It bridges that gap from closing art off in
galleries to opening it up to the public.”
After noticing the striking resemblance between her last name and the
name of a College Avenue furniture store, Gabriele strategically applied
vinyl letter “e”s to the business’s name printed on seven glass doors,
altering it to match her own surname.
The rogue letters, carefully created by a professional sign company as
to not cause damage to the glass, that Gabriele installed remained for
about two weeks before being removed by the business.
Guerrilla art is as passionately opposed as it is celebrated, with some
critics contending it translates more like vandalism than artistic expression.
For Neilson, the very dialogue guerrilla art creates is a positive byproduct.
“In Northeast Wisconsin we are having this great discussion about the
definition of art,” he says. “That’s an invaluable experience for all to
partake in.”
For a glimpse of a recent guerrilla art project, visit the tree stump left
behind by last summer’s devastating wind storm in front of Lawrence
Memorial Chapel on College Avenue in Appleton. Lawrence University
student Will Meadows transformed the tree remnants into an original
sculpture, “The Understanding.”
Two mainstays in the Fox Valley music scene have experienced some
changes in their staff lineup. The Fox Valley Symphony Orchestra
announced a new executive director last fall, and the White Heron
Chorale established a new executive director position, hiring Jeanie Kurka
Reimer.
Fox Valley Symphony Orchestra
The Fox Valley Symphony Orchestra
announced a new executive director in
September, Roseanna "Rosie" Cannizzo.
Cannizzo is responsible for overseeing many
aspects of the organization including
furthering the artistic goals of the symphony,
organizing programs and raising funds.
"Fox Valley Symphony is a wonderful
organization that does many things very well.
I am excited to be a part of a group of
people so passionate about orchestra and
the community,” Cannizzo says. “It’s been
great fun diving into new projects, I go home at night and sit on the
couch and think of what else I can do.”
Cannizzo has been a part of the Fox Valley orchestral scene for years,
first graduating from Lawrence University (LU) with a dual degree in Piano
Performance and English to most recently working as the Director of
Conservatory Admissions at LU.
Cannizzo’s future endeavors as executive director include integrating
symphonic players into unknown places in the community, like during the
lunch hour at Zuppas, child care facilities at the YMCA and at the
Heritage Retirement home. "One of our challenges is to make the
community aware of symphonic music and make sure that symphonic
music is relevant in our community," Cannizzo asserts. And it looks like
Cannizzo is up to the challenge.
White Heron Chorale
Jeanie Kurka Reimer became the first executive director for the White
Heron Chorale this year. As executive director, Reimer will focus on
maintaining the organization’s consistent
achievement of its mission and financial
objectives.
“Music is all about the things I value:
collaboration, community and enrichment,”
Reimer says. “These elements are critical to
the success of non-profits and I’m thrilled to
join an organization which shares that goal.”
Before taking this position, Reimer
worked extensively in the field of social
justice. Her background includes work in
organizational development, donor contact,
fundraising, non-profit governance and
regional/national leadership for a series of non-profits. She holds a
master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and a
bachelor’s degree from Lakeland College.
Hortonville School District trumpets its success in music
education
The Fox Valley can add another musical accolade to its already
burgeoning repertoire. Recently, Hortonville School District was awarded
by the NAMM Foundation as one of the “Best Communities in Music
Education.” This distinctive honor, given to 179 school districts and
schools, acknowledges and celebrates the schools, their administrators,
teachers, board members, parents and students for their support of music
education.
Hortonville High School Band Director and Music Department Chair
Greg Forton realizes that this achievement is not just institutional, but an
effort resounding throughout the community.
“This is a community-wide award, and the reason for that is because
we are so strong in our traditions and cultures, and a love for heritage in
our area,” Forton says. “It is a tradition in our area to go to the music
programs. Everyone in the community is helping out by going to concerts,
coming to musicals, fundraising and supporting our music programs.”
Fostering a student’s musical education is important for a student’s
development because it, “provides an emotional outlet [and] organizes the
mind,” Forton ensures. Mary Luehrsen, executive director of the NAMM
Foundation agrees, stating, “There is a direct correlation between music
education and success in other areas of a student’s life.”
Forton thanks communities surrounding the Hortonville School district
for enabling them to create such a musical environment. “There are so
many wonderful communities in the Fox Valley area,” he says. “This award
is not just a reflection of the Hortonville School District, but the Fox Valley
community as a whole.”
Programming
Makeover at the
Weidner Center
Change is coming to the Weidner
Center for the Performing Arts in
Green Bay, but it’s the schedule, not
the architecture, that’s getting a
facelift.
Attracting an increased number
and variety of bigger events are main
goals of the Weidner Center, in hopes
to appeal to a wider audience and increase ticket sales. Specifically, the
Weidner Center is looking to program more classical dance, family
programming and music, says Kate Green, director of programming for the
Weidner Center.
The Weidner is also hoping to create a profitable business model over
the next five years, increasing their budget from $1.5 million to $2.2
million. Money from the university will increase slightly and remain steady
while most increases will come from fundraising sponsorships and grants.
The majority of funds will go toward paying artists’ fees, but will also
support increased staffing and a more aggressive marketing campaign.
Revitalization efforts are expected to situate the Weidner Center as the
premiere venue of the arts for everything from Broadway acts to local
organizations to faculty and student performances.
“Obviously we have a lot of hard work ahead of us, we're not fooling
ourselves about that, but we have a lot of supporters on our side and I
think we have a lot of friends out there who are going to help us grow and
develop," Green says.
The Weidner Center will announce their 2012–2013 season of 12–18
events late this spring when “dramaphiles” will pile into their seats to
witness the beginning of a theatrical renaissance. Visit uwgb.edu/weidner
for upcoming events.
