GOLDEN GOLF
CHARITABLE TRUST
The mission of the Golden Golf Charitable
Trust is to raise money from golf and
associated activities for distribution to
charities identified at the beginning of each
Tour. The charities selected for support will
vary year on calendar year but the criteria
for selection by the trustees will ensure
that by and large only recognised children’s
charities or causes will be funded.
In each year the Trust will support two
or three national charities who benefit by
receiving, between them, at least 35% of
all the funds generated in the calendar
year. It has been decided that for 2011 the
Golf Foundation, The Children’s Trust and
Momentum, will be the benefiting national
charities.
A further 35% or more will be donated to local
charities identified jointly by the relevant
event figurehead, the host venue and the
main supporters of the event. There will be
a maximum of three local charities benefiting
from each event.
The balance remaining after the above
distribution will be available to support other
charities, at the discretion of the trustees.
The Golden Golf Charitable Trust’s primary
objectives is to enhance the quality of life
for disadvantaged children in UK and
developing countries overseas through
supporting appropriate charities.
These charities will be selected by reference
to the improvement they bring to the
quality of the children’s lives and the care
for those children which can manifest itself
through a mixture of medical research, care,
after-care, respite for carers, education in
all its forms, improved living conditions
and simply enjoying an experience which
is the norm for children who are not
disadvantaged.
HISTORY
G O L D E N G O L F C E L E B R I T Y / A M A T E U R C H A R I T Y T O U R 2 0 1 2
Midway through 2006, the Steve Redgrave
Charitable Trust reached its target of raising
£5 million for children’s charities over five
years. Having been part of this tremendous
achievement, the Sir Steve Redgrave Golden
Five Tour had therefore fulfilled its purpose
and the La Manga Club Masters 2006 was
the last event of that particular Tour.
To fill the gap this generated in the sporting
calendar, a new series of events called the
Golden Golf Tour teed off in 2007.
As with the Golden Five, the Golden Golf
Tour’s overriding objective is to raise money
for children’s charities.
It has also retained many of the other
popular characteristics of the Golden Five
Tour, such as the Television coverage, Order
of Merit, Pairs competition, and an annual
end of Tour Masters event.
However, new features introduced included
the facility to play in a Team Fourball
format and a different celebrity ‘figurehead’
for each event.
TOUR FORMAT
The format of the Tour has not materially
change from that which proved so popular
for its predecessor viz :-
Pairs Competition
The main competition at each event will be
the Celebrity/Am pairs better ball stableford
competition. This is supported by a separate
team fourball competition.
In the main competition each pair will
comprise one celebrity and one amateur player,
with two such pairs playing in each fourball.
In the team fourball competition there will
be one celebrity playing with three amateurs
with best two stableford scores on each
hole to count towards the team total.
At one-day events, the competitions will be
limited to 104 players i.e. 26 fourballs with a
shotgun after brunch.
At events of longer duration competitions
will be limited to 128 players in total i.e.
32 fourballs with a rolling start.
Order of Merit
The individual scores in both ‘team’ competitions
will be recorded in order to
compile individual celebrity and amateur
Order of Merit tables for each event.
Winners of individual event championships
plus the top three Ams in the Order of Merit
will qualify to play in the Masters at the end
of November, as the guests of the Tour.
Other Competitions
Each round will also feature the following
skills competitions:n
House of Sarunds Nearest the Pin
n Cleveland Straightest or longest Drive
n Nearest the Pin with the second shot
Other Features
Each Order of Merit golf day will culminate
in a champagne reception followed by a gala
presentation dinner.
The gala presentation dinner will include all
presentations for competitions on that day,
after-dinner speaking and a small fundraising
auction.
Special hotel rates at, or nearby to, each
venue are negotiated on behalf of all participants.
All Sumaridge wine, Chang beer, Highland
Spring water and House of Sarunds/
Chocolate Alchemist chocolates will be
complimentary throughout each event,
Carnoustie Championship Course at Sunrise Carnoustie Buddon Course
Carnoustie Championship Course
With a sandy subsoil and open, rolling terrain, Carnoustie’s
links were patently intended for the game of golf. It was
James Braid who designed the course that we know
today, although some of his holes were reckoned too
weak for competitive play and the notorious “sting in
the tail”, Carnoustie’s final three holes, was introduced
to compensate.
Now deemed the “toughest links course in the world”,
Carnoustie is a significant challenge even on a mild day.
The 6th, Hogan’s Alley, is particularly well known as
one of the world’s great par fives.
If you want to experience the very best in Scottish golf,
a visit to the Carnoustie Championship course is a must.
As a test of golfing skill, the “Carnoustie Championship”
is unsurpassed, so if you want to really stretch your
abilities and take your game to a new level, make sure
you tackle the course as part of your golfing break in
Carnoustie Country.
Carnoustie Burnside Course
Adjacent to the Championship Course, the laudable
Carnoustie Burnside golf course, established in 1914, has
its own intricacies and character not unlike its senior.
Even though the Championship Course somewhat overshadows
it, visitors will find much to commend about
this fine links.
Heather, whins and a burn come into play throughout
this enjoyable golf course, testing your golfing skills at
every turn. The 5th hole is an interesting par three to
a very well-defended green. Depending on wind, the
ball could find the burn in front or bounce on the green
and continue into the same burn on the right.
The 14th, called “The Scoup”, is a par three of 228 yards,
playing to a plateau green which, especially at that
length, is very difficult to hit and hold. The 15th is long
and distinctly linksy, a par five of 500 yards.
Burnside golf course, if sited elsewhere, would have
much greater acknowledgment, but, as it is, it remains
one of Angus’ undiscovered gems.
Although seldom the focus of a golfing break in
Carnoustie thanks to the Championship course, Burnside
golf course is an excellent links course in its own right, and
will prove a rewarding adversary for any serious golfer.
Carnoustie Buddon Course
Carnoustie Buddon links, established in 1981, is a scenic
course, ideal for mid-to-high handicappers, although its
greatly improved design and condition over recent years
make it a fine and most enjoyable test for any player.
One or two unusual touches have been added to the
Buddon golf course, such as the double green at the
10th and 13th, as well as two lakes that come into play
on four holes.
Whilst there are links elements on the Buddon course,
there are other features such as a heathland stretch
at the 7th where heather and silver birch trees are
more reminiscent of a Highland golf course. This is a
tight, slight dogleg and a pleasure to play well. The
homeward holes, more links-like in character, have been
much improved of late.
The Buddon golf course used to be the poor relation
of the Carnoustie trio but now, thanks to a progressive
improvement programme, it is a worthy and worthwhile
test of any player’s golf skills.
