Club News & Information
The Green Corner
Evelyn Green, CFO, CPA, CHAE
Hello again for our busiest month of the season. We hope you are on the
mountain and having a wonderful time already. Please remember that
Online statements are available for you to see your charges. This online
access gives you the ability to view your billing back up. If you have
questions please contact Evelyn (egreen@roaringgapclub.com) or Larry
(vanhoose@roaringgapclub.com).
As always, we are available Monday thru Friday in the accounting office. If you have questions or concerns
please contact us. Have a happy summer.
Evelyn
Clippings from the Course
Erik Guinther,
Golf Course Superintendent
It’s great to see everybody returning to the mountain and enjoying the golf course
for another great year! While the summer months can always be stressful on golf
course turf, the improvements made will help tremendously. Our irrigation system
is working great. Due to the high level of precision with which we can now apply the water, it will take me
some time throughout the summer to fine tune our water applications. My goal is to keep the golf course
greener than in years past, but to also retain a firm playing surface as Donald Ross intended.
The other great improvement is with our newly rebuilt greens. According to my records, we have had
above average rainfall through the end of May. At this time in June, it appears as though we will meet or
exceed our average in this month as well. With the new greens mix and drainage I have already noticed
that the rebuilt greens return to a playable, firmer surface much quicker than the old greens do. We also
have deeper roots than in the old greens. These improvements are already helping the golf course to get
better. Hopefully the course will get better each and every year. Enjoy your summer!
Erik
The Horse’s Bit
Heather Wile,
Equestrian Center Manager
We’re off to a great start this summer at the Stables. The horses are ready and
excited to see everyone back for the summer. Just a reminder that reservations to
come ride at the stables do need to be made ahead of time so that we can best serve
each and every person wanting to come enjoy the stables.
I’d also like to announce a new opportunity for any horse crazy kids out there. We’d love to start having Pony
Club meetings at the stables one or two evenings per week. During this time we’ll be helping to take care
of the horses as well as participating in various “horsey activities” ranging from vaulting to lunging to tack
cleaning and other fun games. Call for details!
The annual Roaring Gap Horse Show will be held at 1:00 pm on July 29th! I know it seams far away but it
will be here in no time! Make sure to schedule your lessons early during July to get in as much practice before
the show!
Air Care
The Roaring Gap Club has
established a Helicopter Landing
Zone Area (LZ ) located on #16
Fairway to the left of the Doll’s House. In the event of a medical emergency this
LZ is one of many in the County that is utilized to air lift patients to Baptist
Hospital. Air Care 2 is based at Elkin Municipal Airport to provide faster
response times to calls in Northwest North Carolina and Southwest Virginia.
The helicopter, an EC-130, is a flying intensive care unit, equipped with lifesupport
equipment. The Cherry Lane Fire Department, Roaring Gap Deputies
and the Clubs Head Staff have developed an action plan in the event Air Care
is needed in our area. On Thursday June 21st, due to an accident on Roaring
Gap Mountain, our action plan was put to the test for the first time since the
LZ was established. The word that best describes the team work was flawless.
The Cherry Lane Fire Department, Steve Plummer, Randy Crouse, Erik Guinther and staff, Bill Glenn and staff and I all stepped
up quickly to make the action plan come together. At 2:53 PM the call was dispatched to secure the LZ area. Everyone worked
together to communicate the plan, secure the LZ, erect the orange wind sock, redirect traffic, and secure the golf course for Air
Care to land and transfer the patient from the Ambulance to the helicopter. At 3:22 the Air Care lifted off en route with the patient
to Baptist. Great Job Team!
Golf Carts (The Club’s policy)
I would like to reemphasize these very important rules and policies of driving golf carts here in the club. Specifically, golf carts,
whether leased from the Golf Shop or privately owned, shall not be driven on any of the roads in Roaring Gap or property owned
by the club, by anyone who is not a licensed motor vehicle operator and/or eighteen years of age. Also, standing on any part of the
golf cart while in motion is strictly forbidden. Next, headlights are required if driving at night.
Wildlife (New-born-Fawns) –
This time of year we usually have reports of abandoned fawns. More than likely a fawn is not abandoned; it is only waiting for its
mother to return. By the time a fawn is 5 days old, it can outrun a human. At 3 to 6 weeks of age, fawns can escape most predators.
Unless a fawn is in imminent danger - for example, under attack by dogs, the best decision always is to leave it alone. If you are
concerned about the fawn, leave the area and come back to check on the fawn the next day. Do not remain in the area. You are
placing the fawn in more danger by hanging around and watching. Does are very cautious and will not approach or return to a
fawn if they sense danger. If a fawn is in the exact location when you check on it the following day and bleating loudly, do not
pick-up or take the fawn into your possession. It is illegal to remove a fawn from the wild. Only wildlife rehabilitators with a
permit from the Wildlife Commission may keep white-tailed fawns in captivity for eventual release. If you find a fawn or any
other animal that you are concerned about, call myself of Craig. We have a list of rehabilitators and usually can find one to assist
us with any wild animal.
Fishing Rules
Fishing is not allowed from the dam or the Lake Grill area. This includes the docks and the entire area between boat house #39
continuing around the beach to the Holderness boat house. Members and family are allowed to fish for free. However, any
member wishing to sponsor a guest is ask to call the Inn with the information. The guest will need to pickup a fishing permit
from the front desk and the charge is $15.00 per day. Please, do not tell a worker or guest that they can just fish without securing
a permit. The only limits are on the trout, which are two trout per day per person.
Alarms
If you have a house alarm, please make us aware of any key or code changes. Also, if you want to check you alarm to make sure
it’s working properly, just give us a call and we can stop by and check it for you. If you’re interested in having an alarm installed
or repaired, we are here to help.
Caretaker / Housekeeper
Please make the Club aware of any changes regarding the persons looking after your house. If you haven’t updated this
information in a while, it’s crucial we keep this information updated to be able to assist you. Just give the front desk a call with
the information.
Let’s all have a fun and memorable summer. Be safe, and I’ll see you on the mountain.
Your Deputy, Ted Smith
Play will continue into the afternoon followed by a Cocktail Party and Dinner
Wednesday night. Thursday morning a.m play with box lunches at the conclusion of
morning play.
Tennis Tip:
To speed up play and get more exercise all participants in the match should immediately gather all balls on the court after
each point. This will enable you to play more points and hopefully prevent you from stepping on a ball during the course of
a point. When retrieving and sending the balls back to the serving team, be precise in your aim and get the ball back to the
server, don’t just hit the ball over the net.
Thank you and we look forward to seeing you on the courts!
Will Your Boat Float?!?
Sunday, July 15th, 5:30 pm
“3 Hour Tour” Cardboard Boat Regatta
If the castaways of the S.S. Minnow only had a little cardboard and
creativity, their stay on that island may not have been the same. You and your
team will design and build a 1-person powered corrugated cardboard boat capable
of racing the designated course. Maybe you’ll like a canoe, a speedboat or perhaps
a paddleboat. The design is up to you and with a great imagination the sky is the
limit. Each team will create, name and decorate their boat, designate a Skipper,
introduce their creation, and perform a team cheer. That’s right, no good vessel was
ever sent to sea without a good cheer. Each team will have one hour to design and
decorate their boats as well as create the team cheer.
Junior Member Golf Tournament
On Saturday, July 21st, we will host our 3rd Annual
Junior-Member Tournament. Always popular, we want to
make this year’s tournament the most fun and exciting yet!
The Junior-Member event requires the junior golfer to invite
the member of their choice. However, the member cannot
be related to the junior player. Also, it is important that the
junior asks the member to play as his or her partner.
The format for this event will be Texas scramble off the tee
shot and alternate shot until the ball is holed. We will be
playing nine holes with a shotgun start at 3:30 pm. Please
encourage your children to invite a member and let us know at the golf shop as soon as possible to sign-up. We are
looking forward to this event with great anticipation!
Rodney Sigmon,
Clubhouse Manager
Dear Members,
I am excited to bring you some new
wines by the glass this season. Be sure
to look for these wines while dining
at the Inn and Lake Grills. I am sure
that these wines will pair well with the
creative talents of our Culinary Staff.
Cavit Lunetta Prosecco, Trentino Italy:
Enticing aromas of apple and peach
give way to a palate that is refreshing,
and harmonious, with crisp fruit flavors
and a clean finish. Lunetta Prosecco is
delightful as an aperitif or enjoyed with antipasti, hors d’oeuvres, sushi, shellfish and seafood.
Josh Cellars Chardonnay, North Coast: Ripe citrus summer fruit, peach, pear, aligned with a touch of vanilla and smoke, partially
barrel fermented. This classic North Coast Vineyards Chardonnay offers inviting stone fruit aromas, accented by notes of tropical
fruit. The well-balanced acidity supports a core of pear and sweet melon and complements a creamy texture. The wine has a clean,
refreshing finish. This Chardonnay should pair well with any of our Culinary Staff’s Chicken Dishes.
Monjardin Chardonnay, Spain: Bright yellow with green tinges showing the freshness of the wine. The wine is intense, crisp and
aromatic, with an elegant flavor profile. The fresh and fruity bouquet has hints of pineapple and green apples that are accentuated on
the palate. Full in the mouth and long in the finish, this Chardonnay should be paired with cheeses, salads and picnic brunches.
Mohua Sauvignon Blanc, New Zealand: An elegant wine with aromas of guava and lime combined with an expressive palate of
nectarine and grapefruit. A vibrant wine with a long refreshing finish. I suggest trying this wine with any of our salads that have a
light vinaigrette dressing. I personally love to drink a good Sauvignon Blanc with a Greek Salad.
J Lohr Estates Falcon’s Perch Pinot Noir, Monterey County : This wine has a garnet color, and is adorned with aromas of red fruit,
lilac, rose petal, vanilla and notes of sage and thyme. Tar, beeswax and oak frame the complex varietal character unique to Pinot
Noir. Soft tannins on the palate give way to the fine, talcy finish on this very food friendly wine. Consider trying a glass of this Pinot
with any of our Seafood or Pork Dishes.
Columbia Crest Horse Heaven Hills: This intense, fruit-forward Cabernet Sauvignon delivers aromas of cherry blossom and rose
petals with a perfect balance of earth, mineral, deep berry flavors, and a soft, smooth cocoa finish. This Cab should pair very well
with any of our Certified Angus Beef Steaks.
Be sure to try out these wines and let me know what you think. I look forward to seeing everyone back at “The Gap” this summer
Cheers!
Club History
Early History of Alleghany County By Aurelia Eller
Several Roaring Gap Club members have asked me about the Club’s early history: who were
the first members, which were the first houses? In all my answers, I refer to the little green
book, “Roaring Gap,” that was first written in 1976 and has had two subsequent printings, the
last in 2010, written by Mrs. Henry Noel and by Mr. and Mrs. J.D. Wilson. I urge you to buy and
read one of these books that are available at the front desk; it has almost all the answers!
Roaring Gap is located in the southeast corner of Alleghany County, near the boundaries of Wilkes and Surry Counties, and is
at an elevation of approximately 3,000 feet (some records say a little more, others a little less!) in the Blue Ridge Mountains of
North Carolina. My brother Howard Gray used to say that the road from the present Post Office to Bernard Gray’s house marks
the Eastern Continental Divide. Rain falling on the east of this ridge finds its way to the Atlantic Ocean; rain falling on the west
side of the ridge flows to the Gulf of Mexico.
Absolom and Agnes Smith, ancestors of the Smith families of Roaring Gap (including “Miss Alice” Smith, whose house sat above
the fifteenth tee and who kept her butter and cool foods in the spring house near the creek at the bottom of the fifteenth hole) are
believed to have been the first settlers of Roaring Gap in the late 1700’s.
In 1775 Absolom Smith decided to leave England and come to America. Unable to pay his passage over, Absolom sold himself
in bondage to a Mr. Maynard, a rich planter in Virginia, and became a “redemptioner.” He planned to work his seven years
and then set out for himself in the new world. However, before his seven years were up, Absolom fell in love with the planter’s
daughter. Knowing that Mr. Maynard would never agree to such a marriage, the couple eloped to take refuge in the North
Carolina Mountains. They stole a horse from the planter and took with them an old Negro servant who had been with Agnes
for many years. Arriving near the Yadkin River, they were chased by a band of Indians, and escaped by diving into the river
and swimming across. Absolom went first, leading the horse; Agnes rode on the horse’s back. The Negro servant, who could not
swim, clung desperately to the horse’s tail; the Indians were amazed and let them go. After a long journey, they arrived on the
mountain too, and Absolom built their cabin (not far from the Leinbach cottage.)
Almost a hundred years later, Hugh Gwyn Chatham was riding horseback through the mountains to buy wool for the Chatham
Manufacturing Company in Elkin, when he came upon a beautiful mountain top with a meadow, pasture land, an orchard, and a
few houses (including “Miss Alice’s.”) Hugh wanted his friends to see the land’s potential, and the Roaring Gap Summer Resort
Company was organized prior to 1893. A hotel was built, and opened in 1894. The hotel had about 30 rooms and early summer
guests included the Blair, Fries, Galloway, Gray, Reynolds, and Vogler families.
Which of the present cottages at Roaring Gap is the oldest? Some think that the Wolf cottage is the oldest, built by John Ross,
a descendant of the early Smith family, in 1887. Four early houses built around 1893 are shown in a picture taken from the old
hotel; the one by Gilvin Roth (now the Lowry cottage), Hugh Gwyn Chatham’s (now owned by Mac McMichael), Alex Chatham’s
(now the John Chatham’s) and T.J. Lilliard’s (now torn down.) Other early cottages include Alex Smith’s (built on the site of
Barbara Chatham’s cottage; it was later moved and enlarged by Albert Butler, Sr., and is now part of Jim Eller’s cottage); W.T.
Vogler’s (later torn down and D. Ray Henley’s house is on its site); and Henry E. Fries’ cottage (now owned by Ann Gorrell.)
The mountaineers had long called the area “Roaring Gap,” because of the tremendous roar the wind makes as it passes through
the two principal peaks of the mountain.
An early advertisement of the old hotel said “To see the sun rise in the morning, you have to look down! Mineral water on the
grounds are equal to the best.” Rates were $2.00 per day; $10.00 per week; $25.00 per month; children and servants $15.00 per
month. To get there: train to Elkin; then by carriage four hours up the mountain (only two hours back down). Drives up the
mountain were much improved after the State Legislature decided to pave roads and U.S. 21 came over the mountain through
Roaring Gap.
When Mr. and Mrs. R.J. Reynolds started coming, they had the first plumbing on the mountain installed in their suite at the hotel.
The mountain people had never seen a bath tub, and they came in droves to have a look. Another hotel resident was surprised in
awakening to see other mountaineers staring through his window. Accustomed to waking at dawn, they were surprised to find
hotel guests sleeping to late morning!
The old wooden hotel burned in 1913. While others might have given up their dream, Hugh Gwyn Chatham did not. A new
company, Roaring Gap Incorporated was formed in 1925 to begin a new and grander summer resort.
In next month’s Chatter we’ll quote the little green book about the beginning of the Roaring Gap that we know now.
Enjoy,
– Aurelia
The Chatter | Roaring Gap Club | July, 2012 | Pg. 15

Special Event
All members are invited to join us for the Roaring Gap Fund “Dutch Treat” Dinner on Wednesday, July 11 starting at 6:30 pm at
the Graystone Inn. Day camp will be holding their own event so parents of young children can join us, too! We’ll have a delicious
dinner and some live entertainment as well. This is a fundraiser to help continue our momentum in helping the lives of children,
families and seniors in Alleghany County. We will be sending an invitation to each of you through Paperless Post -- please click
“we’ll be there” when you receive it! (Note: we’ll also call or send a paper copy of the invitation to those without email.)
UPDATE: We want to thank all of you who gave to the Roaring Gap Fund this year – and there were many of you. If you haven’t
given -- and would like to, please email Joan Stone at info@roaringgapfund.org. You can find information and give online with
a credit card through our brand new website: www.roaringgapfund.org. We’re very excited about what the Roaring Gap Fund
was able to accomplish this year and we want to do more!
Here’s what YOU helped accomplish in Alleghany County
• You helped give $4,000 to provide heat for 20 families
in Alleghany County. You also provided $1,680 for
heaters for families who can now use them in the cold
winter months.
• You helped fill a “Food Closet” and provided food to be
taken home by children who have nothing to eat during
breaks and weekends from school (we gave $4,590.30
and helped 364 kids who literally would go hungry if
they did not have this program).
• You provided shoes for children who did not have them!
359 shoes were purchased for elementary students from
three schools. The teachers identified the students and
then WalMart helped pick out the shoes. ($547)
• Medication Assistance Program – you helped pay
for medication for low income seniors who were not
covered by Medicare and who would not have been
able to afford their medication. ($658) You also helped
approximately 60 people by providing their medications
for free, allowing them not to have to choose between
having food or taking their medicine. ($1,000)
• Scholarships- this year you helped three students to go
to a traditional 4-year college or community college,
through the Education Fund. ($3,000)
• Cooling – this year you helped purchase fans for senior
citizens to cool their homes. These seniors do not have
air conditioning. ($2,000)
• Dental Clinic – this year you helped by supporting a
dental clinic which was held June 15 and provided
You can see that these funds are making a big difference
in the lives of folks in Alleghany County. And they are so
thankful for what we’re doing. If you’d like more information,
please contact Joan Stone or any of the other Board Members
who are helping with the Roaring Gap Fund this year: Ellen
Bassett, Pat Bassett, Terrie Davis and Guy Mitchell. This
fund is administered by the Winston-Salem Foundation.
