IATP hosted its first Annual Event 26/01/2013 at the
Derbyshire Hotel. The evening consisted of Dinner, our first
Awards Ceremony, silent auction and a live auction. Apart
from being a fun event it was also a fundraising event for
IATP’s chosen charity DAST (Derbyshire Asbestos Support
Team) Guests and Award Nominees travelled from across the
UK in adverse weather conditions and ADAO Linda Reinstein
flew in from Los Angeles.
The most significant part of this event is that it brought
together those people impacted by asbestos exposure and
the asbestos business sector. Our 1st UK Meso Warrior Award
was awarded to Mavis Nye, whose speech moved the whole
audience and received a standing ovation; her determination
to raise awareness across many sectors is and will now be
supported by asbestos business executives and industry.
Followed by Linda Reinstein’s speech as a mesothelioma
Help raise funds for DAST by purchasing our cuddly new

GMB’s activity the industry in 2012 and prospects for 2013
GMB’s activity the industry in 2012 and prospects for 2013
It seems a very short time since I was asked to sum up some
of the GMB’s activity in the past year. There have been many
activities and some small progress in spreading awareness of
the asbestos dangers. Nationally GMB are still at the front of
the campaign and this is replicated throughout the UK.
I have continued to represent the union at the ALG (Asbestos
Liaison Group) and have sat on two sub committees, training
and the ARMI set up. There was an almost full attendance for
the ARMI pilot event in Nottingham on 1st November. The
feedback was very positive once the aims and objectives had
been explained. One of the main reasons for the event was
to explain the role of the HSE in respect to its policing of the
removal industry. It also wished to inform attendees about
the ALU (Asbestos Licensing Unit) and how they operated
now and in the future. It met most of the objectives but it
will be further refined to explain the role of the ALG and its
constituent membership’s role in it.
I also still sit on the negotiation committee which sets the
pay rates in the thermal insulation and asbestos removal
industry. This is a GMB/Unite union side and with TICA/
ACAD representing the employers. Over many years the
relationship between us has gone from hostile to civil and is
now at a quite amicable and reasonably level. Though it will
never be perfect the emphasis is now on welfare and training
rather than simply wages based. We work through the year
on various sub committees and work well together.
The setting up of IATP some time ago was an attempt to
represent independent companies in the asbestos training
industry. It intended to give a voice and support where, for
various reasons there wasn’t any. From your campaigning
and newsletters, support and information members can
access and from the rapid growth of membership I feel it
has been a great success. The hard work of the executive
has seen IATP in London, Europe and the USA setting the
standard for the industry. As I am already involved in DAST I

was delighted you chose to adopt them as your charity given
their wonderful efforts to support the victims of asbestos
disease and their loved ones. The work and support that
Joanne and her team provide freely to many people would
have had to endure misery without them. The family is often
forgotten when asbestosis is diagnosed but they are always
part of the support team along with DAST. They travel many
miles and give freely of their time and expertise. DAST is
always strapped for cash and the financial pressure has
never been so strong as it is today and your help is much
appreciated.
The GMB’s lead H&S officers (John McClean and Dan Shears
have been very involved with asbestos issues throughout the
year. As members of JUAC (Joint Union Asbestos Committee)
and the APPG (All Party Parliamentary Group) GMB warned
that there is a grave danger that the recommendations in
the report from the APPG on “Asbestos in Schools – the need
for action” published recently will be a dead letter as more
and more schools opt out of local authority control and will
not have the expertise to implement the recommendations.
Schools will in short be more concerned with budget
concerns than asbestos issues. With over 75 per cent of
Britain’s state schools containing asbestos, according to
the Asbestos in Schools: the need for action report by the
APPG on Occupational Safety and Health. The report reveals
that much of the asbestos is badly maintained, meaning
that children and staff are exposed to asbestos fibres. More
than 140 school teachers have died from mesothelioma
in the past ten years. Schools also employ a large number
of support staff, a small army of cleaners, administrative
staff, caretakers, cooks and lunchtime supervisors have also
died. All those responsible for a schools running will be
accountable for their lack of actions in the event of either
staff or pupils suffering asbestos disease in the future. Sadly
due to the delay in the onset of disease few if any will face
any punishment.

asbestos awareness training and management is within their
workplaces. This includes all workplaces covering schools
and local government buildings. From the initial response it
is obvious that some are excellent but others have little or
no knowledge, or interest in the problem. Most cite the lack
of effective budgets for safety committees to enact controls.
Those who do not have a supported infrastructure for health
and safety are able to call on our regional and national
officers and reps for expert advice and information.
Finally prospects for the industry in 2013 look very gloomy
and with government contracts drying up and refurbishment
work slowing down prospects are bleak. As far as the
HSE are concerned there will be a small amount of public
campaigning on awareness and their activities will be more
focussed on providing a web based service. The cuts in their
funding will see the closure of even more offices and the
staff continue to haemorrhage away leaving a skeleton of its
former self. One thing you can be certain of is that the GMB
will continue to campaign and work to protect its members
and the public from asbestos contamination and harm. I also
know that IATP will also grow and continue to support its
membership.

HSE RECOVER OVER £750,000 IN TWO MONTHS OF FFI
The first Fee for Intervention (FFI) bills went out from HSE in
week commencing 21 January 2013. The total sum invoiced
for the two months from October to November was £727
644.81. This sum arose from 1418 FFI Invoices.
An earlier Freedom of Information request revealed that
that 373 construction sites were visited under the scheme
between October 1 and November 30 2012 and that
construction made up more than a third of the 903 visits
which could result in a “Notification of Contravention.”
The HSE Board has heard (30 Jan) that a “broad breakdown”
of the invoices shows:
• 10% of invoices are for values greater than £1,000;
• 70% of the invoices are for less than £500;
• 30% less than £200.
The independent members of the disputes panel will be
selected on 6 February and then invited to agree their terms
and conditions so that the first panel can be in pace by the
end of March if needed

IATP Event Gathers Optimists, Innovators, and Educators to Fuel Change
I am delighted to be writing this article after just returning
from the enormously successful Independent Asbestos
Training Providers (IATP) fundraising event, “Casino Royale. Be
Shaken, Not Stirred!” in Derby, UK. As Sir Winston Churchill
said, “A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an
optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.”
It was a true honor for ADAO to be recognized with the
IATP 2013 Global Impact Award, which we all share with the
volunteers, supporters, and donors who fuel our work and
further our cause.
At the event, I had the opportunity to collaborate with
innovative public health leaders and meet several online
friends in person for the first time. One of these friends was
Mavis Nye, who received both the IATP Meso Warrior Award
and ADAO’s Alan Reinstein Award for her commitment to
education, advocacy, and support to countless patients and
families.
It was six years ago when I met Christine Winter by e-mail.
As the technical revolution evolved, our communications
went from phone conversations and email, to Facebook and
Twitter in 2008. In 2012, we had our first IATP and ADAO joint
meeting with the British Lung Foundation and the Health
and Safety Executive. I cannot believe that the first time I
wrote for “Independent Asbestos News” was over four years
ago. I looked back at that issue and re-read Richard Morgan’s
excellent article about trade unions. I had the pleasure of
meeting him last week in Derby, UK. Seeing Christine and
Richard really brought home for me that in 2013, we have
the ability to build good friendships with colleagues across
the world without meeting face-to-face. We all embrace
collaboration and action, as prevention is the only cure!
Global Asbestos Awareness Week (GAAW), April 1-7, 2013,
is another opportunity for international collaboration. We
will designate one of those days just to focus on IATP. Join
with us and see what a powerful force we can be when we
work together and strengthen our community. In 2004,

the World Health Organization reported that, “asbestosrelated
lung cancer, mesothelioma, and asbestosis from
occupational exposures resulted in 107,000 deaths.” This isn’t
just a number; these are people. Each patient death results
in grieving families and friends who have been impacted by
preventable deadly diseases. So, ink your calendars and sign

At the IATP event, I was excited to talk to many of you who
are interested in our 2013 Asbestos Awareness Conference,

Washington, D.C.
