Selected for the Bethel idea
The design competition for the Bethel idea
development yielded worthy proposals from
three architectural design firms. The Site
Readiness Committee was charged with
selecting one firm for the project. After
several meetings, Aro Eberle Architects/
Cunningham Group was selected.

Request for Proposal (RFP) and submitted
their interest and qualifications for the
Bethel idea project. Those proposals were
reviewed and three firms were selected to
enter a design competition. The three competing
firms were Aro Eberle Architects/
Cunningham Group, BWZ Architects, and
Strang, Inc. They were all provided the Master
Site Plan document submitted to the city
and asked to provide exterior elevations
and floor plans. In early
November, all three architectural
firms presented their design
proposals to the committee.
The three proposals were then submitted
for peer review. The peer review noted such
things as total square footage, code compliance
and cost estimates. The ingress and
egress of each design was submitted to the
City of Madison traffic/parking for
their review.

The Selection After several meetings, detailed peer
review and honest conversation, the Committee recommends
Aro Eberle Architects/Cunningham Group to
be the Architect of Design for our Bethel idea.
Their stated goals for the project are:
Provide ways to better serve existing ministries
Allow for development of new ministry programs
Broaden outreach to the community – in form
and function strengthen relationships through
collaboration during design, entitlement and
construction
Secure parking for Bethel Lutheran
Create logical and efficient traffic flow for various
programs
Create compelling, sustainable building design
embraced by the congregation and community
These goals are met in a design with tapered buildings
off of Carroll Street which serves as welcoming
arms and provides logical entry way for the entire campus.
The design also features one-way entrance to the
underground parking garage off of Johnson Street and
one-way exit onto Gorham Street.
The design creates a strong, efficient circulation
spine between the new and existing building. It provides
an open, yet secure outdoor daycare space maximizing
daylight. There is a new, welcoming entrance
off of Carroll Street with a shared public garden inviting
pedestrians onto the campus. There is a centralized
vertical circulation that will efficiently serve all levels.

Bible Point: We celebrate the surprises of Jesus’ presence with us.
Key Bible Verse: Jesus did this, the first of his signs,
in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory;
and his disciples believed in him. John 2:11 NRSV
Prayer: Dear God, Thank you for sending your Son, Jesus, to
save us from our sins. Thank you for the miracles he
did and for the love he showed, so we can believe that
he is God. In Jesus’ name, amen.
The design has some downsides that will need to be
addressed. The short-term surface parking count is low,
only 12 spaces. There is a long travel path for day care
drop off. An additional stairwell will be needed to service
the third level where the gymnasiums are located
and the central stairwell will need be enclosed. As currently
drawn, the third floor extends over the property
line and more restrooms will be needed on the third
floor, too.
Even with the stated downsides of the proposed
design, the selection committee did not see those as
insurmountable obstacles. The congregation will be
asked to approve this recommendation, and the Capital
Campaign Firm recommendation at the congregational
annual meeting on Jan. 27 at 2:30 pm. Executive Summaries
for the Architectural Firm and the Capital Campaign
Firm will be available for members attending the
Annual Meeting. We encourage all members to attend!

Journeying with the Prophetic Jesus
James Bailey, New Testament
professor, will present this
introduction to our Lent Bible
Study series on Feb. 6. The
Gospel of Luke invites us to
journey with the Spirit-filled
Jesus whose prophetic words
and actions usher in a new reality. Prof.
Bailey will present a session at 5:00 pm,

Women’s Coordinating Council ‐ Blessed to Be a Blessing
The WCC of Bethel has awarded gifts, primarily collected
from the Circles, totaling $800. Designation of monetary
gifts to Madison area missions:
Domestic Abuse Intervention Services
In its fourth decade of operation ‐ DAIS has worked passion‐
ately and effectively to ensure the safety and well‐being of
domestic violence survivors and their families, and to
change societal attitudes that perpetuate violence and the
abuse of power.
HEALTH Helping Educate and Link the Homeless Free Clinic
This program has been operational since late 2009. More
than 40 volunteer health care professionals are involved in
providing the majority of basic medical care services in Madi‐
son locations that are easily accessible to the homeless and
underserved populations.
The Road Home
formerly known as Interfaith Hospitality Network
The Road Home Dane County is committed to developing
long‐term relationships with homeless families with children
in an effort to change lives. They work with families, not
only to relieve the immediate crisis of homelessness, but
also to build skills, resources and relationships that set the
stage for long‐term success.
Thanks to all who participated in this worthy challenge to
help provide for those outside the walls of Bethel, thus
experiencing God’s care through some efforts of ours.
