Miller Nature Preserve Volunteers Needed
Miller Nature Preserve and Conservatory has opened and is magnificent!
Volunteers are still needed for all areas- the front desk/gift shop, host,
and plant care. Please be informed that there is a separate membership for
the Conservatory ($10 for a Yearly Membership or $2 for a Daily Pass) and
your Friends' membership does NOT give you entrance to the Conservatory
except on the days that you work at Miller. Your Friends' discount does NOT
include classes or programs at Miller, and is not given on consignment items
(numbers on item that begin with 79xxx).
If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Char Kline 440-315-
7192 for front desk and gift shop or Darlene Fedor 440-934-3455 for host or
plant care.
A BIG thank you to those members that assisted the first couple of
months to help make Miller Nature Preserve and Conservatory such a success!!
Char Kline, Miller Desk Corp Leader
Columbia Metro Park Volunteers Needed
Columbia Metro Park is often forgotten about, but there are some great
opportunities for volunteering in the near future. On October 7th & 8th
tram rides will be available (need tram drivers). In November there will
be an escape artist/magic show and in December there will be a Brunch
with Santa. We need your help to make these programs successful. If
you are interested, contact Char Kline at 440-315-7192 or email bossmare25@windstream.net.
Thanks for all your help.
Char Kline, Columbia Corp Leader

Notes from the President
Cheryl June
Hello Volunteers,
This starts the busiest time of year for
Friends and help is always needed at the upcoming
events. Please check your calendars
to see if you can help Information for these
evens is on page 3.
A reminder about your hours: It is VERY
important for you to submit your hours.
Your membership depends on you turning
hours in on an ongoing basis and by year end.
It becomes important to have hours on the
books for Halloween as the insurance coverage
only covers for the hours posted.
If you have not submitted hours or are under 40
hours for the year, you should have received a postcard
to renew your membership.
If you are in doubt about your hours, please feel
free to contact me and I will check your hours for
you.
We have a new order of Friends shirts in. If you
would like a shirt, please let us know. We also have
Friends patches available - $2.00-each. The order
form is also on page 6 of this newsletter. REMEM-
BER - The park has requested that you have some
type of FRIENDS identification visible on you at all
times while you are on duty. The patch or shirt and
your name tag would be sufficient.
I wish you all a safe and healthy fall! See you at
Halloween!
Cheryl June, President
Disney Training
The park is offering to Friends a "Disney
high level of friendly customer service required
by all employees.
I am always reminding the teens in Teen
Corps, we represent the park and must always
be our best in the public eye. So, watch
the next issues of Friends Talk for an opportunity
would be fun and enlightening and hope to
see you there.
French Creek Nature Nook Move By Marge and Bob Holland
Most of you are aware by now that the
French Creek Nature Nook has moved to Millers
Nature Preserve and Conservancy. It is an
exciting opportunity at the new park, but we will
miss the shop at French Creek. To all the
members that worked there, thank you so
much. We could not have done it without you.
Our special thanks goes to Sandy Pitts who
cornered us into managing the nook and has
always been a great help. She will be managing
the Miller Nature Nook. We also thank Sandra
Gray, French Creek corps leader, who did the
monthly worker schedule, and Al Solderitsch
who faithfully picked up & deposited the sales
money each week.
There is a book of pictures from the French
Creek Nook.
It includes pictures from pastexhibits and some of
the field trips we made. We scanned the pictures
and put them on a CD. Let us know if you want a
copy.
We hope to see you all at Millers Nature Preserve.
There are many volunteer opportunities
there, including the gift shop. Thanks again to all.

Bioblitz: Pick What You Want By Bill Kingsley
What a wet spring Ohio had. The weather conditions made doing anything outdoors very difficult.
By early June, however, decent weather descended on northern Ohio. The second weekend of
June had perfect weather for the Bioblitz program at Sandy Ridge Reservation. Four separate ac-

Naturalist Supervisor Grant Thompson made sure that Metro Park naturalists were on hand to
make the multifaceted program run smoothly.
Senior Naturalist Leslie McNutt led a group of seventeen adults and children along the path west
time in this program. The group was a nice mix of children and parents having family fun like Pam
Norman and her two kids, Megan and Kyle. They caught butterflies and also chalked up points for
the walking stick program.
The group also included adults who had a more serious interest in the program and were able to
take close-up pictures with digital cameras.

June 26, 2011

recorded over 20,000 adult volunteer hours and over 2800 teen volunteer hours from June 1, 2010 to May 31, 2011.
This has been another busy year for Lorain County Metro Parks and for Friends. We had some record breaking numbers
this year for Holiday Lights and Halloween Fair.
Halloween Fair had 26,554 visitors and 10,398 visitors rode the train. There was over 6000 pounds of food donated

unteer hours.
Holiday lights had 13,000 visitors this year and exceeded the nightly magic number of 1,000 visitors with 1,420 on
12/11 and 1,010 on 12/18. There was over 5000 pounds of food donated to the food bank. Our volunteer hours for holiday
lights were 1,100 hours.
The Lorain County Metro Park has thanked us for our efforts and I add my thank you for your hard work and dedication.
These are major undertakings and Friends volunteers can be counted on to help make these events a success for
Friends and the park.
This year has also brought the opening of the new Miller Nature Preserve. If you have not had a chance to visit, I
urge you to go. I have been there three times already and I am awed by the beauty of the conservatory. The outside is
not complete yet, but they tell me this is scheduled to be completed in the next couple of years.
I know many of you have noticed a switch in park staff. This year there was a move of responsibilities and many staff
has taken on more and different responsibilities. I know I can count on all of you to give them your support and understanding
as they try to acclimatize themselves to their new responsibilities.
As with the way of things, CHANGE is a constant. This year saw the opening of the Miller Nature Preserve Nature
Nook and the close of the Friends Nature Nook at French Creek Nature Center. The gift shop is still open in French
Creek with True North gifts and art and run by volunteers. If you have a love of theatre, I urge you to volunteer at French
Creek and assist True North. Many different volunteer opportunities are available. I love the theatre and have volunteered
myself. In addition, a park Naturalist has been moved into French Creek and she is going to need your help.
Maple sugaring took place over four weeks and we had over 1000 volunteer hours in the sugar shack. Friends ran
two pancake breakfasts during the Maple Sugaring with over 200 volunteer hours.
The sixth year of the Murder Mystery was again a success. The cast, crew, volunteers and park staff were exceptional.
If you have not had an opportunity to attend a Murder Mystery Dinner, it is fun and entertaining. If you fancy being

special.
I thank everyone for their efforts and dedication during the 2010-2011 year. There are many different volunteer positions,
be it during the big events, the special events at each of the parks or those of you that work daily greeting visitors,
volunteering at the nooks, helping prepare for events, making phone calls and the list goes on. We appreciate ALL your
efforts.
We also need to recognize the volunteers that are not visible: the newspaper editor, photographer, writers, the treas-

financial success of your organization depends on their efforts. It takes team effort to keep the organization running.
Without their expertise and all your efforts, we would not be able to supply the financial aid to Lorain County Metro Parks
that we have been able to accomplish.
I cannot forget your Corps Leaders. They are the back bone of Friends and are there to help you get your hours, to
help park staff run programs, take care of the gardens, nooks, critters and Raptors. When they call or email you, they

Another year has come to a close. With its ups and downs it has been a successful year. I was saddened to lose
two board members this year, Matt Petraglia and Donna Laufer. They were both a big support to me and the board.
They are missed by me and the board. Both are continuing their volunteer work with Friends and we thank them for their
dedication.
We welcomed two new board members, Pam Pastor and Elaine Clark. We thank them for their agreement to fill in
the voids and their dedication to Friends.

support and dedication necessary to support Lorain County Metro Parks. As I work on the annual dinner report, I am

alive and well into the future.
My sincere gratitude to you all, Cheryl June, President

Walking with a Doc By Bill Kingsley
The Lorain County Metro Parks offered an interesting threemonth
program at the Amherst Beaver Creek Reservation every
a hiking program that includes a doctor, is a coordinated exercise
program between the Lorain County Metro Parks and the Cleveland
Clinic. Participating physicians are located in the Cleveland

Seventeen people of various ages participated in the 10:00
a.m. mid-June walk. Kara Cocco, the walk coordinator from the
Clinic, brought water, fruit, and a large white box that I hoped
contained donuts. To my dismay, it had release forms and her
cell phone. The easy hike took about 45 minutes and followed a
hai Prabhakaram. Five of the walkers were Amherst teachers. I
recognized a few other hikers from various other Metro Park programs.
Kay Snyder and Phyllis Frazel mentioned that they participate
in two to three Metro Park programs every week.
Once again, the hike was easy, and a great way to try to keep
fit. Try it out. Who knows, maybe donuts will be in the white box
when you are there.
French Creek Noontime Concert By Bill Kingsley
True North Cultural Arts has a special program an noon at the French
Creek Nature Center. It is a one-hour concert that runs the third Friday of
every month. Different musical artists are featured during the year.
Two friends and I attended the concert in June that featured acoustic
guitarist Jim Anderson. Fifty-four people attended the program and enjoyed
a mixture of blues, rock, classics, and folk. The stage had Jim, two
acoustic guitars, and two speakers. It created a relaxed and very enjoyable
concert. Anderson played the entire hour with songs ranging from
Rockin Robin and Here Comes the Sun
Hands.
After the concert refreshments could be purchased at the snack center.
If you have an hour at noon on the third Friday of the month, you might want to take in a concert
at French Creek Reservation. We really enjoyed it.
Moss Identification By Bill Kingsley
Sandy Ridge Reservation ran a series of events in its Bio-Blast program
in early June. Visitors were able to look for moths and butterflies, hike the
trails in the walking stick program, and/or take in a lecture on moss in Ohio.
If someone sitting beside you said plagiominium cuspidatum what would
blackberry to see if it is a European draft pick for the Cavs;; or give the person
an aspirin and hope he gets better. If you picked any of the above, seek
serious help. The Latin phrase refers to the most common moss in Ohio.
What I discovered during the lecture was that many types of moss exist in
Ohio, and more are being found yearly.
Everyone had a good time, and when this event was completed, other activities awaited. You could spend
the entire day at Sandy Ridge having fun and learning with your kids or grandkids.
Presidential Visit By Bill Kingsley
It is not every day that you can tour a local historical home and then listen to the President of
the United States. However, if you were part of the large group of people at the Burrell homestead
in mid-August, that is exactly what you got.
At 1:00, Tom Hurley, a long time Burrell family historian, led a tour through the two-story brick
home on French Creek Road. The home has historic connections with 19 th century influential Sheffield
families including the Roots, the Days, and several members of Oberlin College. The people all
According to Hurley, the Burrell farm remained in the family until it was sold to the Lorain

when the last Burrell sister died.
The tour included the four rooms downstairs and two of the bedrooms upstairs. Hurley identified
various antique items in the rooms including but not limited to beds, bed warmers, and old photographs.
After the tour, the President of the United States arrived and discussed his life from his poor
childhood with his hard-working mother to his inauguration. We are talking about Ohioan James A.
Garfield. Ed Haney, an actor who portrays Garfield, gave a very impressive impersonation of the
short term President who was assassinated in Buffalo shortly after he was elected.
Each one, however, is referred to by its
Latin name which makes it very difficult for
most of us to remember them. I figure that
if I can remember plagiominium cuspidatum,
the most common Ohio moss, and
tetraphis pellucida, the moss found on rotting
stumps, people will really think that I
out the Latin terms and keep on walking.

tation brought many interesting facts to
light. Mosses number up to 12,000 different
variations. Ohio has about 400 and
Sandy Ridge has 36 that can be identified.
