<strong>dentist</strong>ry at the Veterans Administration<br />

Medical Center in Sepulveda, Calif., and<br />

in dental public health at UF.<br />

While in California, Dolan met<br />

her husband, Stan Given. “Stan and I met<br />

at UCLA while I was a fellow in the Robert<br />

Wood Johnson Foundation program and<br />

Stan was finishing his M.B.A.,” Dolan<br />

said.<br />

They met in March 1986 and<br />

were married the following December.<br />

Of their whirlwind courtship, Dolan said<br />

with a beaming smile, “Well, when you<br />

meet the right guy, you know it!” They<br />

became parents to daughter Victoria in<br />

April 1995.<br />

Family is important to Dolan,<br />

and she credits her pr<strong>of</strong>essional success<br />

with the support she receives from her<br />

family. “Without the strong support <strong>of</strong> my<br />

husband and daughter, I simply would<br />

not be able to do this job,” Dolan said.<br />

“Stan and I work a lot, but we<br />

make an effort to find time away that’s<br />

not work. One <strong>of</strong> the best things we’ve done was to buy a house<br />

four years ago on Longboat Key,” she said. “Whenever we need<br />

Take a stroll through the dental tower on any given day, and you’ll see folks wearing<br />

‘Terri Rocks!’ buttons in honor <strong>of</strong> Dean Teresa<br />

Dolan. The button is the concept <strong>of</strong> comic<br />

mastermind Dr. Marc Gale, director <strong>of</strong> student<br />

affairs and an infamous (to students, anyway)<br />

faculty member <strong>of</strong> the operative <strong>dentist</strong>ry<br />

department.<br />

Gale says he came up with the idea <strong>of</strong> the<br />

button while talking to alumni during the UFCD<br />

alumni reception at the 2002 FNDC.<br />

“Terri had just been appointed interim dean, and<br />

many <strong>of</strong> the alumni had just met her and were asking questions. They really<br />

liked her,” said Gale. “I was talking to the alumni about how the college will<br />

have to rely on them in the future for support, and I said, ‘maybe if you give<br />

us some money, we’ll give you a button that says ‘Terri Rocks.’ And, if you<br />

give us enough money, we’ll have it encrusted with semi-precious stones!’”<br />

None <strong>of</strong> the buttons so far have been rimmed with jewels, but they are<br />

in hot demand. Designed by teaching lab specialist Renato ‘Sal’ Salazar and<br />

originally intended as a fun thank-you to donors, the buttons are now seen as<br />

morale boosters for students, faculty and staff.<br />

How did Dolan feel about the button? “Terri liked it,” said Gale. “She<br />

doesn’t take herself so seriously that she can’t laugh at herself.”<br />

That’s why Terri rocks!<br />

quiet family time, we pack up the car and<br />

we go down there. It’s such a peaceful<br />

environment, and the rule is we don’t<br />

take work with us.” Boating, beaching<br />

and kayaking are the agenda items during<br />

weekends at the family’s retreat, but they<br />

also enjoy snow skiing every February in<br />

Utah with friends.<br />

Dolan keeps a busy schedule.<br />

As dean, she is a central presence for<br />

nearly every college initiative, and her<br />

attendance and attention are in great<br />

demand. She manages her schedule like<br />

a military strategist, yet always takes<br />

time to genuinely listen, no matter how<br />

pressed she may be.<br />

Dolan’s long-time colleague,<br />

Marc Gale, D.M.D., director <strong>of</strong> student<br />

affairs, said Dolan is a “woman for all<br />

seasons.”<br />

“Terri has the vision and<br />

understands the college’s research,<br />

curriculum and clinical missions,” Gale<br />

said. “She is approachable, decisive and<br />

as gentle as she can be tough. She solves<br />

problems by getting people to work together, and when she<br />

says something, she says it from the heart.”<br />
