Protecting San Francisco Bay and its watershed are home to a community of species found nowhere else on earth, many of which are at risk of extinction from water projects, land conversion, toxic discharges, exotic organisms and other threats. The Bay Institute has been a leader in the successful effort to win and implement protections for species like delta smelt and Chinook salmon that serve as indicators of the estuary’s ecological health. In 2010 and 2011, our scientists and policy experts worked to defend these victories and funding for environmental projects from Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom 10 constant attack in Congress and the courts by the powerful interests that export water from the Delta. We also made progress toward securing new federal protections for other species like longfin smelt and Sacramento splittail. In important planning processes like the Bay-Delta Conservation Plan and the Delta Stewardship Council’s Delta Plan, Rivers and Delta Program staff advocated for longer-term, comprehensive reforms in water and resource management in order to solve the underlying causes behind declining populations and set these species on the path to recovery. Where the Sierra Nevada streams meet the waters of the Pacific—magic happens. The San Francisco Bay enriches our soul, provides our climate and sustains our economy. This global treasure is host to more than 750 species of fish, animals, and birds, and home to 8 million people. I am committed to protecting this amazing resource by working with The Bay Institute to educate and inspire present and future generations.
Measuring the In 2003, The Bay Institute issued the first-ever Ecological Scorecard for the Bay—widely acknowledged by scientists and decision makers as a valuable model for a sciencebased assessment of ecological health of the Bay. Since then we have been working with the San Francisco Estuary Partnership, established by the state of California and the federal government, on an even more comprehensive evaluation of the Bay’s health. The end result, The State of San Francisco Bay 2011, released in September 2011, paints a mixed picture of efforts to manage and restore the estuary. The new report’s sections on indicators of flows, fisheries and water use were prepared by The Bay Institute’s scientific experts, and we will be working to provide The Bay Institute helped establish the scientific foundation for The Estuary Partnership’s 2011 State of the Bay Report with their excellent 2003 San Francisco Bay Ecological Scorecard. We were able to key off of the effective methodology The Bay Institute provides in those reports, which gives accessible and essential information about the health of the Bay.
