2011 ANNUAL REPORT
Alameda County Community Food Bank

ABOUT THE FOOD BANK
July 1, 2010 — June 30, 2011
For 26 years, the Alameda County Community Food Bank has been at the forefront of hunger-relief efforts, helping
people struggling with hunger in our neighborhoods. We are the hub of a vast collection and distribution network
that provides food through a network of 275 food pantries, soup kitchens, child-care and senior centers, and other
community-based organizations throughout Alameda County — from Berkeley to Fremont, Oakland to Livermore.
We serve 1 in 6 residents of Alameda County, nearly two-thirds of whom are children and seniors — the most
vulnerable members of our community.
In FY11, the Food Bank distributed 20.9 million pounds of food — 54% of it fresh fruits and vegetables.
The Food Bank no longer serves simply as a clearinghouse for donated food and surplus commodities. In order to
meet the steadily increasing need in our community, we now purchase more than half of the food we distribute.
We believe food is a basic human right. Our role goes beyond providing food for today — we also give hope for
tomorrow by building long-term solutions to end the cycle of hunger in Alameda County. Our approach toward
eradicating hunger includes:
• One of California’s busiest — and most efficient — emergency food helplines;
• A multilingual food stamp outreach program that serves as the blueprint for programs across the nation;
• Dynamic hunger and nutrition education programs;
• A team of forceful staff and community advocates promoting and protecting anti-poverty policies with local,
state and federal legislators.
A 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, the Alameda County Community Food Bank is affiliated with Feeding America,
the California Association of Food Banks and the California Hunger Action Coalition.
FOOD DISTRIBUTION
FARM-FRESH PRODUCE
— Fruits and vegetables
are at the core of our
mission to provide
our community with
nutritious food. In FY11,
distribution of produce
continued its surge
upward to 11,279,584
pounds. That’s an increase
of 26% over FY10.
TOTAL DISTRIBUTION: 20,916,750 pounds of food (10.5% increase from FY10)
USDA GOVERNMENT COMMODITIES — U.S. Department of Agriculture
commodities distributed rose for the third consecutive year to 4,823,752 pounds
— a 7% increase. That’s equivalent to 3.7 million meals, approximately 12%
of which were served as hot meals in the Food Bank’s member congregate feeding
agencies, such as soup kitchens.
CHILDREN’S BACKPACK PROGRAM — This program provides children with
healthy food to last through the weekend, when they aren’t receiving school meals.
The program grew to 24 elementary and middle schools across the county during
FY11. We distributed 32,470 bags of food to children and their families — 8.5% more
than last year. Visit our YouTube page to see firsthand how the program works.
“WHEN KIDS COME TO SCHOOL
on Monday and they don’t eat over the weekend,
they might have stomach aches or headaches and
they might not be able to focus on school work.”
Maira, age 11, Children’s BackPack Program participant, Greenleaf Elementary School

CALFRESH OUTREACH
(formerly known as Food Stamps)
Our approach to alleviating hunger goes beyond the immediate
needs of our 49,000 weekly clients. Federal nutrition programs
such as CalFresh (food stamps) help many in our community
stretch their food budgets — and drive billions of dollars of federal
funding into California’s economy each year.
Our CalFresh Outreach team, who pioneered a pre-screening program that quickly gauges a potential recipient’s
eligibility, serves as a blueprint for food banks from coast to coast. The team helps eligible clients complete the
process and expedites applications through Alameda County Social Services Agency — all in an atmosphere that
preserves clients’ dignity. Applications facilitated by our team are approved more than 75% of the time — compared
to a 68% approval rate countywide.
In FY11, our eight Outreach staff assisted 5,937 households through the CalFresh Hotline (1-800-870-FOOD),
198 enrollment clinics, on-site enrollment and 45 presentation events.
ADVOCACY
The Food Bank’s forceful advocacy efforts provide a voice for hundreds of thousands of Alameda County residents
living with hunger — a voice heard in city halls, county government, Sacramento and Washington, D.C. In FY11, our
Policy & Services team organized 79 meetings with legislators, grassroots anti-hunger advocates and other partners.
During Hunger Action Day on May 17, 50 advocates from our Food Bank — clients, volunteers, staff and agency
partners — descended on our state capitol for meetings with legislators to share firsthand how their decisions
impact everyday Californians.
“I DIDN’T grow up
needing this kind of help
... but I have to make sure
I can feed my kids.”
— Evangeline
Evangeline manages a coffee shop. Sean
is a soccer coach and party planner. But
keeping their children safe, with a roof
over their heads and the lights on, takes
every penny they earn. So when money
gets tight, the food budget is the first
place they must cut. CalFresh benefits
make sure Alliana, 3, and Alex, 5, don’t
go hungry. The groceries Evangeline
purchases with her CalFresh EBT card
allow her to cook healthy meals for her
children to enjoy every day.

FOOD AGENCY & NUTRITION SERVICES (FANS)
Since its creation in FY10, FANS has focused on building the capacity of our
275 member agencies to meet the changing needs of their clients. This began
with 24 capacity grants — for freezers, refrigerators, fax machines and shelving to
improve efficiency.
Our FANS team is working on recruiting and training additional emergency food
agencies — soup kitchens and pantries — in areas of the county hardest hit by
poverty and unemployment.
NUTRITION EDUCATION
Our nutrition education program empowers the community with ways to eat
healthy on a limited budget and how to make the most out of the food we
distribute.
In FY11, our nutrition education staff hosted 91 meal-preparation and nutrition
education workshops. Staff and volunteers also worked with clients to determine
recipes that best met their wide range of cultural and nutritional needs and
translated materials and recipes into Spanish, Chinese and Vietnamese.
The Food Bank has also implemented the Cooking Matters curriculum at agencies
and community locations, empowering clients and agency representatives with
skills and knowledge to help decrease risk of diabetes, obesity, heart disease and
other diet-related conditions.
EMERGENCY FOOD HELPLINE
Our multilingual Emergency Food
Helpline (1-800-870-FOOD) is one of
California’s most efficient — and busiest
— food referral systems. Callers receive
a same-day bag of food or hot meal for
their household at a location in their
neighborhood.
Calls to the Helpline have surged 220%
in the past five years.
In FY11, the Helpline referred 38,528
households — a 7% increase over
record-shattering FY10. The number
of staff and volunteer operators has
doubled over the past two years to
respond to rising demand.
Seniors and children continue to be our
most vulnerable clients — 30% more
calls came from senior households in
FY11 than FY10, and 15% more from
homes with young children.
“I’VE BEEN VOLUNTEERING
with the Food Bank for over 12 years and it is hard to explain
the feeling I get after finishing a shift on the Emergency Food
Helpline. If I couldn’t volunteer at the Food Bank, I would have to
pay to do something to feel that good.”
Rich Leres, Emergency Food Helpline volunteer since 1999
Emergency Food Helpline
Households Referrals
2011: 38,528
2010: 36,058
2007: 13,719

VOLUNTEERS
As demand for food has steadily increased, the Food Bank has grown to meet the need. Volunteers
are a critical part of our ability to respond to this demand, donating time equivalent to 29 full-time
employees in FY11.
We rely on volunteers to sort and package food in our warehouse. We also depend on volunteers to
help with special events, administration, and in the community — from collecting food to meeting
with legislators in Sacramento. Our volunteers’ work on our Emergency Food Helpline is lifechanging
for thousands of people each month.
Proof that “community” is truly our middle name: Volunteer groups from local businesses, schools,
religious and other organizations made up more than 75% of the 7,404 volunteers who worked a
collective 57,669 hours at the Food Bank in FY11.
“I ADMIT,
I thought food banks
primarily distributed
processed stuff. I’m
so glad I can help
everyone have access
to the high-quality
fresh food I’m able
to afford.”
Krisanne Combs, Food Bank volunteer

THE COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT CENTER (CEC)
When the Food Bank purchased our permanent home in 2005, we rented the back acre of our facility to a private tenant. When demand increased 23% from
2006 to 2010, we were forced to expand into that space. Construction began the summer of 2010 on our own Community Engagement Center.
On Feb. 1, we debuted our refurbished acre of sorting space, with classrooms, offices and a kitchen to accommodate the growing corps of volunteers who
enable us to meet increasing demand. During the first two days, volunteers sorted 3,500 pounds of carrots, 9 tons of oranges and 3,600 pounds of food-drive
collections.
The CEC is now regularly abuzz with 50 or more volunteers in two daily shifts, six days a week. We have also used the bright, open new space to host more
supporters at our annual family-friendly fundraiser, Empty Bowls, and our leadership breakfast speakers’ series.
We are grateful to our inaugural CEC sponsors:
