As Americans, we are afforded by the Declaration
of Independence the unalienable right to life, liberty
and the pursuit of happiness. I believe that without
sufficient access to behavioral health care services,
these rights listed above are in serious jeopardy.
Even with funding cuts and lulls in donations, it still remains
the responsibility of Coleman Professional Services to
protect our neighbors in need and help improve the lives of
individuals, families and businesses. These people deserve
life, and beyond that, a life in which they can live happily.
Imagine a person sleeping on the street is your brother, or
an elderly woman who can’t afford nursing care is your
mother. Statistics are clear – those suffering from behavioral
health and addiction problems die on average 25 years
earlier than the rest of the population. What if that happened
to your family?

Change the World!
Awards
1. Coleman was awarded a $403,000 Ohio Recovery Vocational Rehabilitation
Grant from the president’s American Reinvestment and Recovery Act that will
be used to offer a full menu of mental health and vocational rehabilitation
services to individuals with mental, developmental and physical disabilities in
Portage, Stark, Summit and Trumbull counties.
2. Coleman Residential Services was the recipient of a $10,000 JP Morgan
Chase grant to provide pre-vocational services to residents in Portage
County, including job shadowing, training and aptitude testing.
3. Coleman Professional Services has earned a renewed three-year accreditation
for each of its behavioral health and employment units by the Commission
on the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), which recognized
Coleman for its individualized and quality services.
Accomplishments
1. Coleman’s Social Enterprise Model is making a large impact on subsidizing
its clinical programs. Both Coleman Data Solutions and Coleman Consultation
Services are providing strong financial results, in addition to employing people
with disabilities.
2. Although cuts from our mental health and recovery boards, totaling more than
$500,000, have taken place, staff and management re-examined how to be most
cost efficient to avoid reducing services for people who needed them most.
3. Seven members of the Board of Trustees traveled to Washington D.C. to discuss
and address issues including behavioral health legislation with elected officials
in Congress, serving as true advocates for people with mental health and
addiction challenges.
4. Through a new partnership with QoL Pharmacy, Coleman now has
pharmacies at each of its key service locations, which leads to improved
medication management for clients.
5. Management has developed a new Balanced Scorecard to align business units
with corporate direction. A new customer satisfaction survey was started and
recorded as part of the process.
6. Coleman’s properties and service locations now have a completed Regional
Pandemic Plan.

· Opened a new location in Aurora in
January 2010 to serve more clients.
· Received a grant from the Aurora Rotary
used to purchase a television and Nintendo
Wii game system to enhance fitness for
clients at the Aurora location.
· Received a grant from the Ravenna United
Fund used to replace 20 chairs.
· Kids 4 Coleman, a community group,
raised more than $6,500 for Adult
Day Services through their fundraising
initiatives.
· Increased the number of veterans and
PASSPORT clients served.

Portage County Focus (continued)
· Access Services assisted with numerous hospital diversion cases which
led to under-usage of allotted state bed days, allowing for a significant
refund to Portage County.
· Partnered with Portage Industries to provide a 24/7 resource for
vocational consumers.
· Collaborated with Stark County to reduce state hospital bed days in
that county.
· Worked collaboratively with the Mental Health and Recovery Board of
Portage County and Kent State University to develop a process for early
identification of mental health issues in college students.
· Access Services completed 2,371 pre-screens and diagnostic assessments,
2,719 phone screens for agency intakes and 7,359 phone crisis supports
in one fiscal year.
· Received vocational rehabilitation · Awarded a $4,968 United Way
stimulus grant and will implement grant to fund additional bed days
extended employment services for in our Crisis Residential Unit for
persons with disabilities.

Stark County Focus
· Added QoL Pharmacy on site to better coordinate
medication management for clients.
· Mediation Services joined Coleman, and partners
closely with Coleman Behavioral Health.
· Held first annual J.O.B.S. event and raised $3,400 for the
employment and vocational needs of our clients.
· Received Ohio Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction
Services (ODADAS) certification, which allows the provision
of out-patient drug and alcohol treatment.
· Earned a renewed three-year Commission on the Accreditation
of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) accreditation.
· Case managers and supervisors participated in a year-long
training program sponsored by the Board of Trustees on
motivational interviewing.
· Added expedited Social Security Income (SSI) services
for rapid response in helping people obtain benefits.
· Joined Coleman as the newest business
unit, benefiting the Stark County community.
· Mediation was successfully used as a form
of alternative dispute resolution to resolve
conflict and restore balance for family
matters, neighbors in dispute and employee
issues in the county.
· Took referrals primarily from six different
court systems and two school districts.
· Worked with 51 students and their families
to avoid court involvement and expulsion
or suspension.
· Conducted 690 mediations serving over
1,400 families and individuals.
Summit County Focus
· Opened first location in Akron in February 2010 through a
partnership with Summa Health System at Summa St. Thomas
Hospital. Behavioral Health services include diagnostic
assessment, counseling, case management and psychiatry.
· Completed more than 270 diagnostic assessments in the first five months.
· 76%
of our consumers are female with the majority of referrals
coming from the clinics at Summa: The Women’s Health Clinic,
Family Practice Clinic and Internal Medicine Clinics.
· Partnership with Summa Health System facilitated a second
Coleman office to offer behavioral health services in Summit
County at Summa Barberton Hospital.

Trumbull County Focus
· Opened Crossroads in April 2010 to provide a
permanent supportive living environment to 12
formerly homeless women.
· Secured funding for the purchase and rehabilitation
of Washington House, which will provide permanent
supportive housing to eight transitional-aged youth.
· Added property management responsibilities to Coleman
for Crossroads and Joey’s Landing, which provides 20
additional units to Coleman’s residential portfolio.
· Received a contract from the Trumbull Metropolitan
Housing Authority to provide case management services
for its Youth Build Program.
· Secured a contract with the City of Warren to provide
homeless prevention and rapid re-housing assistance for
persons with a mental health disorder living in the city.
· The “Uncork for a Cause” fundraiser raised more than
$3,000 for the urgent medication and transportation needs
of clients.

Financials
“ Coleman Professional Services had a strong year in 2009. We went from a
decrease in net assets of $606,413 in 2008 to an increase in net assets of
$347,161. This turnaround was due to the efforts of the whole organization
in reducing its operating expenses over $1 million dollars during the year.
Coleman reported total assets of $8,434,549 and net assets of $3,496,417
for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2009. ”

Create Hope!
The needs are high and the times are tough. The
climate is interesting, albeit a little daunting. We
could be overwhelmed by the increasing need for
behavioral health services coupled with the decrease
in funding – but we refuse to loosen the grip on our
mission at Coleman Foundation.
As bold as the headlines on these pages, is our goal to increase
support for children, families and older adults facing mental
health and rehabilitation challenges. Now partway through
our Touching Lives Changing Destinies campaign, the taste
of success looms even sweeter. We’ve gotten a taste of what
support for Coleman can do – 11 formerly homeless people
suffering from persistent mental illness now have a home at
the Walter Capling Apartments in Kent.
It feels good, but there’s much more to do. A children’s
center, suicide prevention training and care for more adults
at Adult Day Services are awaiting our assistance through
the campaign. The longstanding needs of our community for
assistance funding psychiatry, medication, housing, children’s
counseling and vocational services are real and still in need of
our support and attention.
We’re proud to make a difference every day for people in
need and we ask you to continue your support, in whatever
way is possible, to ensure that lives are saved and improved
for our neighbors in need.

Foundation Events
Right at Home 21st Anniversary
On Sept. 12, 2009, Deborah Shorts welcomed 230 of Coleman’s
guests to her beautiful mission-inspired River Bend home overlooking
the Cuyahoga River for one of Portage County’s premier annual events.
The evening featured two silent auctions, one which highlighted original
art from local artists and a second that offered travel and entertainment
packages. Thanks to our generous friends, more than $50,000 was raised
to provide care to Coleman clients regardless of their ability to pay.

J.O.B.S.– Jump on Board in Stark 2009
Coleman Foundation’s first-ever fundraising event in Stark County
featured the photography of the Joseph Saxton Gallery of Photography
in Canton. A total of 70 friends of Coleman attended the Gallery
for an evening of Chinese raffles in November 2009. More than
$3,400 was raised for the employment and vocational needs
of Coleman clients in Stark County.
Uncork for a Cause 2010
In April, 60 of Coleman’s friends and supporters in Trumbull County
spent an evening at Wine Styles in Howland enjoying a variety of wine.
The second annual Uncork for a Cause raised more than $3,000 for
the urgent medication and transportation needs of Coleman’s clients
in Trumbull County.
Kids 4 Coleman Dessert Extravaganza 2010
The second annual Kids 4 Coleman Dessert Extravaganza was held in
August. More than 180 people attended and $6,500 was raised for
Coleman Adult Day Services. Special thanks to the Mandalari Family
for their leadership and commitment to this event. Funds from this event
support the needs of Coleman Adult Day Services clients who suffer from
dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.

Annual Fund Make a Difference!
For more than 22 years, the philanthropic spirit of
the community has sustained Coleman Foundation.
Gifts to Coleman Foundation’s Annual Fund make a
difference in the lives of hundreds of clients. These
vital gifts give Coleman the financial flexibility to
provide care to all, regardless of their ability to pay
for services.
Clients who have little to no resources are able to access the care they
need to recover. The Annual Fund ensures that the Foundation can fulfill
its mission “to support children, families and older adults facing mental
health and rehabilitation challenges.”

Planned Giving
Gifts from the estates of friends of Coleman
Foundation are critical to the long-term financial
success of fulfilling the Foundation’s mission to
serve the needs of adults, families and children
with mental health challenges.
In the 22-year history of Coleman Foundation, many donors have included
the Foundation in their estate plan. In fact, Coleman has received bequests,
been named as the beneficiary of both a Charitable Remainder Trust and
a Charitable Lead Trust and received a gift of commercial real estate. The
funds received from these various planned gifts have supported the needs of
clients for housing, employment services and psychosocial rehabilitation for
the most chronically mentally ill.
The Foundation’s Legacy Society recognizes friends of Coleman who
have included Coleman in their estate plan. There are 23 members of
the society. Each of these friends has made a commitment to support the
future needs of clients by helping to ensure that vital services are provided
for decades ahead.
Giving through your will is an extraordinary way to support the work of
Coleman Foundation to improve the lives of the clients served by Coleman
Professional Services. Please consider including the Foundation in your will.
Ways to Give
Gifts from estates and current gifts may be made to any of Coleman
Foundation’s endowment funds (shown on page 24). These funds
support residential needs, Adult Day Services, needs of the uninsured,
children’s mental health recovery needs, suicide prevention, urgent
medication needs, and social and vocational rehabilitation programs.
Additionally, donors may create a new endowment fund with an
initial commitment of $10,000.

In Memorium
Richard L. Fowler, or Dick as he was affectionately called, served as a Coleman
Foundation Trustee from 2008 – 2010. Dick helped lead the Touching Lives
Changing Destinies campaign as a member of the Campaign Cabinet and made
an extraordinary financial commitment. Additionally, Dick and his late wife,
Joyce, hosted Right at Home in 2001.
Dick passed away in April 2010 after a courageous battle with cancer. His
passion for Coleman’s clients and his commitment to providing care for all,
regardless of their ability to pay, will be deeply missed.
