The Kracher winery is situated close to Lake Neusiedl at Illmitz in Burgenland. The vineyards are perfectly placed to benefit 

from the lake’s microclimate, particularly its consistent encouragement of bortrytis.Alois Kracher has chosen two vinification 

methods for his Trockenbeerenausleses: NOUVELLE VAGUE wines are fermented and aged in new French oak barrels 

and ZWISCHEN DEN SEEN wines are vinified in stainless steel or in big casks.Today, his son Gerhard manages the winery 

with the same strength, firm will and consequence as his famous father used to do.Apart from the world-renowned

The Weinberghof of the Fritsch family has been the driving force for quality in the Wagram region for decades. Grüner 

Veltliner, which accounts for one third of all area under cultivation, along with Riesling and Zweigelt are the uncontested 

main varieties. Pinot Noir is a “matter of the heart”-wine for Karl Fritsch, in which he can show his skills. His efforts have 

been rewarded with the title “Falstaff Vintner of the Year 1997”. Respect for nature and man through biodynamic cultivation 

on his 20 hectares, transparency, creative spontaneity, and open mindedness have led to a unique style. The Fritsch wines 

are straightforward, crisp and elegant with a down to earth character which reflects not only the terroir of the Wagram, but 

also the personality of their creator.

Mittelburgenland 

The Gesellmann winery is one of the very few in Austria to be equally acclaimed for white, red, and sweet wines. Still, 

Blaufränkisch is the most important grape variety therefore Albert Gesellmann vinifies it in every imaginable form - in oak 

casks, small barrels, or as single-vineyard parcels. His philosophy is to bring elegance, fruit, and structure in the wine to 

reflect the relatively cool climate and unique character of the region. Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah and Pinot Noir 

Siglos round complete the portfolio. The red blends Opus Eximium, Bela Rex and the “G” (produced only in exceptional 

years from selected old Blaufränkisch vines with a dash of Sankt Laurent) manifest Albert Gesellmann as a virtuoso in 

blending. All wines are matured in oak barrels.

Walter Glatzer has been one of the first to believe in the capability of the vineyards of Carnuntum to excel and was therefore 

essential in developing the style of Carnuntum wines and inspiring other young winemakers in the area. He stands for 

fruit-driven elegant wines with silky tannins and mild acidity which offer drinking pleasure with substance. While many 

winemakers used a lot of new oak and sought more concentration in their wines, Glatzer stuck to his credo, “Typical 

regional character and terroir cannot be expressed in extremely tannic and heavily oaked wines.” Because the region is 

dominated by the warm Pannonian climate, nearly 70% of the estate’s 50 hectares are planted with red wines, mainly 

Zweigelt, but also Blaufränkisch and Sankt Laurent.

Kamptal 

The Hirsch family creates uncompromising terroir wines which reflect the soils and conditions under which they were grown. 

The focus on Grüner Veltliner and Riesling guarantees the best of 25 hectares of outstanding vineyards like the primary 

rock sites Heiligenstein and Gaisberg and the excellent Lamm, Grub and Renner with their deep loess soil. Key elements in 

the Hirsch family efforts are love and understanding of nature and sensitive wine making skills combining traditional 

methods with modern technology. Open mindedness aids constant improvement of the wines. Johannes Hirsch has been a 

pioneer in many fields which today are regarded as the norm. The vineyards have been cultivated nature-related for over 20 

years and give wines with clarity, minerality, precision and a touch of soul.

Bernhard Ott’s nickname is “Mr. Veltliner”. This title describes his dedication to Austria’s hallmark variety. Since the year 

2000, 90% of his vineyards are planted with Grüner Veltliner. The deep loess soils of his home in the Wagram region 

provide perfect conditions for this variety to express the uniqueness of this extraordinary terroir. Since Bernhard took over 

responsibility for the winery in 1995, the name Ott has become a synonym for freshness and purity of fruit as well as 

drinkability paired with volume and substance. His intense desire to produce something unique and preserve the singularity 

which nature provides his wines has inspired him to shift to biodynamic cultivation of his 30 hectares. Bernhard Ott is 

distinguished by the magazine Falstaff as “Vintner of the year 2008”.

The Leth winery, one of the leading wineries in the Wagram region is located in Fels. 40 hectares are run by family Leth, 

directly on the terraces of the Wagram hillside. The deep loess soils are excellently suited for Grüner Veltliner, half of the 

area under vine is planted with this variety. Wines are offered in two ranges: the "Classic" range made in typical Austrian

Rudolf Rabl jun. is very glad about the traditional history of the wine-growing estate. Together with his father Rudolf Rabl

Kremstal 

A thousand year old monastery has revived its winemaking with help of Austrian wine guru Fritz Miesbauer. Stift Göttweig, a 

Benedictine community, has 26ha of vines in the Wachau and Kremstal wine region. The Stift Göttweig line includes two 

top-range single vineyards whites – a Grüner Veltliner from the Gottschelle site in the Kremstal and a Riesling from the 16th 

century site, Silberbichl, in Wachau. “The silberbichl and Gottschelle are fantastic sites” said Miesbauer. “The potential is 

astounding.” As well as producing medium-range Riesling and Grüner Veltliner, the monastery will also produce its own 

Grüner Veltliner Messwein (sacramental wine).

The vocabulary with which GernotHeinrich tells his story is uncomplicated and distinctive: Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch, St. 

Laurent – varieties which he tends with loving care, in favorable locations close to the estate. The colour white is currently 

only represented by Chardonnay which is also considered as an indigenous grape to the region, just like Pinot Noir. Both, 

however, play only a minor role in the portfolio. Currently having changed to biodynamic viticulture, Gernot Heinrich's 

processing incorporates a symbiosis of the traditional and innovative, and he is not afraid to strike out on new paths ...

Kamptal 

Fred Loimer manages a total of 40 hectares of vineyards in some of the best sites around Langenlois. Year after year, he 

impresses by his benchmarking Grüner Veltliners (especially from the Käferberg and Spiegel) and Rieslings (unsurpassed 

from the Seeberg and Steinmassl) which perfectly reflect the high quality and the special microclimates of the Kamptal. With 

the 2000 vintage, Fred Loimer started to vinify and store the wines in his new winery whose architecture caused quite a stir. 

Since the end of 2005, the vineyard and cellar work have been conducted according to biodynamic principles.Being a siteand 

terroir-driven character, Fred Loimer also tries to show the Thermenregion´s potential under the polarizing Schellmann 

label with an intriguing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Perfect physiologically ripe grapes are quintessential for Willi Sattler. He manages three of the best vineyard sites of Styria: 

Sernauberg, Pfarrweingarten(monopole)and Kranachberg. The steep vineyards as well as other topographic characters are 

the cornerstone for aromatic and complex Sauvignon Blancs and Morillons, the region’s synonym for Chardonnay. The 

“Steirische Klassik” STK° wines are bottled quite young and feature maximum fruitiness and freshness whereas the more 

mature wines are aged separately for each vineyard.These premium wines are made exclusively from grapes grown in 

vineyards that boast outstanding soil and a particularly favorable microclimate. The classification system distinguishes 

between“Erste STK Lage” (Sernauberg)and“Große STK Lage” (Kranachberg,Pfarrweingarten).

Wien 

Fritz Wieninger, the internationally-known wine maker could be referred to as the pioneer of the “New Vienna wine growing”. 

To his merit, Fritz played a considerable part in promoting Viennese wines to reach such high level of demand and to 

obtain such well known image. At present the wine maker cultivates the total of 33 ha on two vineyards: on the Bisamberg 

where among others Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are grown, and on the Nussberg, where beside the mineral Riesling and 

Gruner Veltliner, the traditional Viennese Gemischter satz is also planted. “I try to use the numerous facets of my grape 

material,” Fritz says. “To be able to show the differences in terroir and vintage and to get the character of the vineyard into 

the bottle – this is my greatest challenge.”

After graduating from the Klosterneuburg Viniculture College Judith Beck gained international experience at world-famous 

wineries like Château Cos d'Estournel in Bordeaux, Braida in Piedmont and Errazuriz in Chile. Managing the family winery 

comes natural to Judith who has a preference for the typical regional varieties Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch and St. Laurent. She 

and her father Matthias practice sustainable viticulture in the best sites in Gols near lake Neusiedl. Judith Beck manipulates 

her wines as little as possible in the vinification process seeking varietal expression and unique vintage character. The 

resulting wines are powerful, well-structured, complex and possess good ageing potential.

Claus Preisinger is one of Burgenland's triple threat winemakers; he is young, extremely talented and ambitious. He focuses 

alomst solely on making high quality, character driven Zweigelt based wines from 17 hectares of vineyards. The majority of

DANKBARKEIT - Restaurant & Winery The winery Josef Lentsch is situated in Podersdorf next to lake Neusiedl. Josef 

Lentsch has got two passions of his life: he owns a restaurant which has been family-run for four generations now and he

The family as germ-cell, in the last centuries always has been our refuge of energy. This structure remained alive until 

today's time. JURIS comprises about 18 ha (2/3 for red wines and 1/3 for white wines)of vineyards, which are situated all 

over the wine-region of Gols. Gols is located in the wine region Burgenland between Vienna and Budapest in the warm 

Pannonian climate with permeable soils of gravel and sand.Caused by the geologic conditions in our area, a great number

Kamptal 

The traditional Sonnhof courtyard dating back to the 16th century - with its 700-year-old natural cellar labyrinth - is 

undoubtedly one of Austria's most impressive wineries. As founding members of "Traditionsweingüter Österreichs" the 

Jurtschitsch brothers cultivate 74 hectares of prime vineyard sites around Langenlois, primarily on barren stony or loess

Franz Weninger-one of the pioneers of quality wine growing in Austria.His way of working is based on the principle of 

exerting as little influence on the growth of the plants as possible so that the vines will once again find their natural balance. 

Converting to a bio-dynamic production method was seen as a logical step toward coming closer to nature and improving 

quality. Today He owns 30 hectares of vineyards in and around Horitschon, most of them have been planted with

Our winery, which ranks among the best wine producers of Austria, is situated in Lower Austria - not far from Vienna - in a 

valley called Kamptal. The favourable climate of this valley boasts hot and dry summers and mild winters with little rain and 

snow.We cultivate 14 ha of vineyards on loess and primary rocks. Our main variety is the Grüner Veltliner, undoubtedly also 

the most typical Austrian wine in general, with a peppery taste and a refreshing acidity. This grape reaches its best quality 

on both types of soil, while the Sauvignon Blanc grows best only on primary rocks, Riesling on newly layed-out terraces, 

and Pinot Blanc on loess and gravel. Further varieties include Roter Traminer, Zweigelt, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The LANG winery cultivates an estate of some 32 acres in ILLMITZ Seewinkel in the wine growing region of Neusiedlersee 

(the largest lake of Austria, near to the Hungarian border, only 117 meters above the sea level), producing mainly white

Fuchs winery, which is family owned since 1920, is located on a hill embedded in the southern Styrian vineyards. The Fuchs

At the foot of the „Gaisberg“, in Strass the winery Johann Topf is situated. It is operated by Hans and Magdalena Topf. This 

winery is an impressive place, where tradition and innovation melt together. Last year a new tasting room in the form of a 

modern cube was built and inserted into the baroque ambience. The winemaker Hans Topf is very proud of the sites, where 

the wine of the family winery is grown. These are the premium sites in “Kamptal”, where the winemakers are very intent to 

grow the right grape variety in the right soil.The wines of the family Topf maturate in the 500-years-old historical cellar 

vaults. They are located 12 metres under the Gaisberg. Depending on the grape variety or the vintage we decide if the wine 

maturates in stainles steel tanks or wooden barrels.

The family-run winery Steininger is situated in Langenlois in the Kamptal Valley. Lower Austria is well-known for the Grüner 

Veltliner and this is also the strength of the winery. Grüner Veltliner represents over 50 % of their production. It can be found 

in different styles, from a light summer wine to powerful and voluminous full bodied wines as well as dessert wines. The 

Steininger winery is also well known for their sparkling wines which are produced according to the traditional method. 

Excellent base wines and vigilant second fermentation are the keys to obtaining great sparkling wines. All of the sparklings

The Höpler winery is located in Breitenbrunn on the western banks of lake Neusiedl, in the Austrian province of Burgenland. 

Our 34 ha of vineyards face south east between the ‘Leithagebirge’ hills and Lake Neusiedl. This creates a warm, humid 

microclimate in which grapes of highest quality flourish. In addition the contrasting soils of chalk, gravel and sand are rich in 

calcium as well as in slate and contribute to the unique complexity and character of our wines. Wines mature in stainless

From innumerable wine tastings with our parents and grand-parents as well as from their weather diaries kept for many 

years, we know how the character of every single vintage has developed.With this knowledge and our own experience, with 

a special touch and intuition we try, year after year, to create great wines. In our search for the perfect wine, we are 

continuously trying new ways. We experiment with different types of grapes and work at developing our vineyards and in the

The young vintner Josef Ehmoser is among the ambitious newcomers in recent years that have repeatedly won positive 

reviews. The vineyards are all found on slopes with pure loess soils that bring powerful, full-bodied wines. Each wine 

displays its own inimitable personality and special attention is given the variety Grüner Veltliner. The classic, spicy"Von den 

Terrassen", the powerful, single-vineyard "Hohenberg", and the monumental old vine "Aurum" display the wine-maker´s 

talent and versatility with Grüner Veltliner. That Riesling can also develop good varietal character from loess is aptly proven 

by Ehmoser. Great efforts are put into the care of the vineyards to ensure the best quality fruit possible. "As little as 

possible, as much as necessary" is the credo in the wine cellar.

Neusiedlersee 

Josef Umathum is one of the leading wine growers in Austria. The soils of Umathum are warm and especially suitable for 

seriously good red wines such as the local St. Laurent, a variation of Pinot Noir. The winery works mainly with old Austrian 

varieties and they are planted on singular Terroir. Umathum cultivates the traditional terrace vineyards in the village of Jois 

with a great history date use to 1214. The wines are always well balanced wines with a real taste of their origin.

The Hiedler wine estate is one of the traditional establishments in Langenlois. Over the years Ludwig Hiedler has worked 

with his wife María Ángeles, who comes from Barcelona and is responsible for marketing and exports, to develop the wine 

estate into an international star performer. The vineyards are managed in the best locations Langenlois, where two climatic 

zones overlap this area. Environmentally-friendly cultivation of the vineyards and rigorous pursuit of quality during 

vinification guarantee delicately fruity, mineral and complex, sometimes powerful wines which are suitable for laying down 

and win national and international awards. In order to produce wines with a noble and authentic character we mainly use 

Austrian grape varieties which are at the same time typical of our area.

The Nine Austrian Wine Styles (Categories) 

Cat. 1: Sparkling wine – bubbly and animated 

Austria produces first-class sparkling wines – a tradition that goes back to the 19th century. 

Specialists in the bubbly sector – from light Frizzante to hand-riddled premium sparking wine – 

extend from private “manufacturers” to larger wineries. 

Cat. 2: White wine – light and fresh 

This range of Austrian white wines are lively, vibrant, and fit perfectly to any season: from the 

“Junger Österreicher” to ” Steirischer Junker”; from a light Grüner Veltliner, such as a Steinfeder 

from the Wachau, to a delicate, spicy Welschriesling from Styria; and there are those “tasty” 

Schmeckerten with low alcohol, like Muskateller or Müller-Thurgau. 

Cat. 3: White wine – classic & dry 

Austria´s classic white wines are filled with freshness, fine acidity, great elegance and plenty of 

character. They are medium-bodied as well. This clear profile includes: Grüner Veltliner at the 

Kabinett level - especially the DAC wines (Weinviertel DAC and Traisental DAC); fresh Riesling from 

the wine-growing areas along the Danube river; elegant Weißburgunder and Chardonnay from 

Burgenland, plus representatives in the Styrian Classic family (Sauvignon Blanc, Morillon, 

Weißburgunder). The classic dry white wines are produced in all of Austria´s wine-growing areas. 

Cat. 4: White wine – powerful & bodied 

This category´s profile is best described with „Reserve“. The wines are vinified dry with body and 

extract, opulence and concentration. Besides the majority of wines which are classically vinified are 

those reflecting an international character through their maturation in small oak barrels. Prime 

examples are site wines from Grüner Veltliner and Riesling (such as Smaragd-level wines from the 

Wachau and premium wines from the area along the Danube or from the Weinviertel). Highly 

individual personalities are the powerful Zierfandler and Rotgipfler varietals from the 

Thermenregion, as well as the complex Weißburgunder and Chardonnay from Burgenland. 

Rounding out the category are the great Steiermark (Styria) site wines, whose varieties include 

Sauvignon Blanc, Morillon, Weißburgunder and Grauburgunder, plus specialities from Vienna like 

Neuburger, Roter Veltliner and the Gemischter Satz. 

Cat. 5: Rosé – racy & fruit-toned

Rosés come from all of the country´s wine-growing areas and convey a wide range of expressions. 

For example, there are charming young wines like the Primus Pannonikus from Burgenland, and 

there are the fresh Zweigelt and St. Laurent from Niederösterreich (Lower Austria), as well as the 

racy, zesty Schilcher from Weststeiermark (West Styria).

Cat. 6: Red wine – classic and fruity 

The Nine Austrian Wine Styles (Categories) 

These are wines vinified in the classic style, and matured in either large wooden casks or steel 

tanks. They exude typically Austrian fruitiness, but also show depth and are not too high in alcohol: 

this means wines that reflect typicity of origin, elegance and pure drinking pleasure. Playing a 

leading role in this category are Zweigelt, which is at home in nearly all of the wine-growing areas, 

notably Carnuntum; and Blaufränkisch, of which enticing variants are produced especially in 

Mittelburgenland. 

Cat. 7: Red wine – compact and concentrated 

The wines of this level are compact and full; wines of complexity, depth and long ageing potential. 

They are concentrated red wines that highlight a rich array of grape varieties and sites. Some are 

produced as cuvées with just moderate expressions of wood. While they are matured in barriques, 

these top red wines reflect depth of fruit and typicity of terroir. Particularly noteworthy is that the 

Austrian varieties like Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch and St.Laurent stand out from classics like Pinot Noir 

and the international varietals like Cabernet & Co. 

Cat. 8: White wine – fruity sweetness & muscular intensity 

Wines in the higher Spätlese and Auslese ranges have some of the greatest storage potential of 

Austrian wines. In their youth, these wines exude plenty of finesse with supple sweetness and a 

vivid fruit-acidity play. The palette extends from aromatic Muskat-Ottonel from Burgenland, 

(Gewürz-)Traminer from Steiermark (Styria), and Neuburger, Chardonnay, Weißburgunder, Grüner 

Veltliner and Riesling from the various wine-growing areas, to the great Spätlesen and Auslesen of 

the special varietals Zierfandler and Rotgipfler from the Gumpoldskirchen area. 

Cat. 9: Noble sweet wines 

These include Beerenauslesen and Trockenbeerenauslesen, Strohwein and Schilfwein, Eiswein 

with expressive, buttery smoothness, and the nobly refined Ruster Ausbruch. Characteristic of 

these sweet wine rarities are natural residual sweetness and highly-concentrated acidity, usually in 

combination with the incomparable noble rot flavours. In this group, Austria is truly world class. 

However, the category does have slight complications, such as the lack of a cohesive identity of 

origin, especially in comparison to Tokaji and Sauternes.
