On Sunday the 28th of February a
group of French business students
from Le lycée agricole de Tourville
(BTS technico-commercial de l’agroalimentaire)
in Normandy travelled
to Dorset and took part in
running a market stall selling products
from France.
One of the missions of the French
business students was to get samples
of food from different companies.
In total the French business
students collected more that thirty
different products which would be
sold on the market and these information
would then be analysed by
our students.
This was being done in conjunction
with Year 12 and 13 Highcliffe business
students who assisted in marketing
the venture and collectively
taking part in cross curricular business
enterprise activity.
The stall ran in Christchurch on
Monday 1st March and the Year 12
Highcliffe French students helped
with any break down in communication
between the students themselves
and the students and the
customers.
All through the morning of Monday
1st March the students had a rotation
of activities to do; a customer
questionnaire provided information
on people’s taste for French
food, selling the different goods
and filling a worksheet comparing
the marketing approach of four
different supermarkets. To do
these tasks the students were divided
into small groups including
Year 12/13 Highcliffe business students,
Tourville business students
and Year 12/13 Highcliffe French
students.
The day on the market was a real
France: England MFL/Business Exchange
success for many reasons. Firstly, it
was nice to see students from different
nationalities working together
towards a common goal,
and for
many students
it
reiterated
the importance
of
language
for business
purposes.
Secondly,
there was a
real communion between the students
and the community who
really enjoyed the opportunity to
talk with the students about the
origin of the French products and
their plan for the future. Finally it
was also a way for the students to
realize that there are real opportunities
for cooperation between our
two countries as some of the products
sold very well.
The following day the students all
met at Highcliffe School. The day
was divided into different sessions:
during the first session the students
analysed in their groups the
customer questionnaire and the
results of their sales and shared
their findings with the
rest of the class.
In the second session
the students worked
on a marketing activity;
for the third the
Year 12/13 Highcliffe
business students presented
the marketing
work they did for the
project and in the fourth session
the Tourville business students
presented the different activities
they had done (dealing with the
customs, gathering food products,
financing their trip by doing different
activities).
All in all it was a very successful
project which hopefully will get
students to think about the different
business opportunities that
exist between France and England.
Report by Mr Maurice
A group of Year 12 students is currently working towards the
Foreign Language Leaders Award. They are learning teaching
techniques and how best to plan a language lesson.
They recently started teaching their first-ever lessons
to groups of Year 7 students in Spanish, French, German
and Italian. One student, Tom Towers, also taught
a class of primary students at
Highcliffe St Mark Primary School.
They are all making excellent progress to achieving their awards, so
well done to Jade Southwell, Amy Gilbert, Claire Kendall,
Jenny Higson, Lauren Evans, Fenella Courage, Asya Zuyeva,
Adam Horwich, Jenna Lloyd, Lauren Cooper, Reece Lopez,
Emily Keith, Hannah Leary and Sarah Hemming.
