Kraege International has been a
specialist propagator of strawberry plant
material since 1958. Our company produ-
ces more than 20 different strawberry varie- ties on about 100
hectares of rented land. Strawberry frigo plants account for the lion’s
share of our business. We continuously work to maintain and improve
plant material health.
It all starts with producing our own mother plants. (Read more on this
on the next page.) Our particular strength is the wide range of varieties
we offer. Having good contacts with all major plant breeders worldwi-
de, we are able to test new varieties at an early stage. As you can see
from the picking period table, we have a wide range of products with
all currently popular varieties included.
In addition to strawberry plants, Kraege focuses on the production of
raspberry plants. The latter are offered as bare-rooted cane as well as
potted plants gained from root cuttings.
Mother plants
Mother plants from our own
production!
Healthy plants are the basis for suc-
cessful fruit cultivation. Pro du cing
our own starting material we take
the decisive step to en sure the pro-
pagation of healthy plants. As we
know by experience new di s eases
emerge regionally at first be fore
spreading over larger areas.
Cultivating mother plants of different
origin at one site always in volves a
high risk of disease progression. We
minimise the risk by keeping our
starting material strict ly apart from
plants of other origin. For the rea-
sons mentioned above we have put
a ”closed system” in place.

The production of our elite plants
starts with in-vitro propagation in
the laboratory. Unlike in common
meristem labs, the idea is not to
produce as many seedlings as pos-
sible in a short period of time. In -
stead, our one and only intention
is to get a small amount of defini-
tely healthy plants. In the following
steps, we exclusively use runners
for propagation. First of all, the in-
vitro plants are propagated in a
saran house. The tightly woven,
gauze-like saran fabric prevents
insects from entering the house and
infecting the plants with viruses.
Mother plants as well as seedlings
are grown on table beds, in safe
distance from the ground bed, so
that infection by soil fungi is exclu-
ded. For extra safety, the super-
elite plants (SEE) produced in the
saran house are inspected for
di seases on an annual basis.
Mother plants
The super-elite plants (SEE) are then
propagated on a special site, far
away from other strawberry plan-
tations. The resulting elite plants (EE)
are used for the production of com-
mercial plant material and are sub-
ject to constant supervision by the
Chamber of Agriculture.
New variety testing
”What's new in varieties?“ is the
question most frequently asked by
strawberry plant buyers. What they
want is a healthy, ear ly or late
season variety of outstanding fruit
quality and yield potential – in short:
the perfect strawberry va riety. Un -
for tunately, there is no such a thing,
and there won't be in the future.
Selection and breeding of new va -
rieties aims at various objectives.
Healthy plants, if possible with resi-
stance to common diseases, and an
extended season are the most rele-
vant criteria.
Thanks to our good contacts to
straw berry breeders we get new
clones in for evalu ation each year.
The most promising ones are plan-
ted in our experimental garden and
tested for special properties they
might have.
Good varieties are recognized
early on. The ”candidates“ are
tested for several years and initial-
ly suggested for trial planting only.
Intensive testing of strawberry varie-
ties is essential for us to keep our
stock up to date.

PYO
Daroyal ® is a cross-breed (Elsanta
x Parker) from Darbonne’s breeding
programme. Daroyal ® ripens three
to five days earlier than Hon eoye.
Attractively shaped fruits of large
to very large size characte rise this
variety. The fruit colour is a glossy
red to dark red. Yields are good or
even excellent. Every single fruit
can be picked and sold (unlike with
Honeoye where at least 30% of the
last fruits remain unpicked due to
their small size and poor fla vour).
Daroyal ®
– protected variety, Head Licence:
The early season variety for direct marketing
and pick your own!
The fruits are best marketed on the
day they are picked, because they
have a tendency to darken in the
cold store. Daroyal ® is fine for sel-
ling at market stalls as well as for
pick-your-own plantations.

Daroyal ® is a vigorous, robust varie-
ty that does fine on plots with out
crop rotation. Unlike Honeoye, it is
very resistant to Verticillium. Earlier
cultivation with fleece material or
plastic film is possible and promising
(see test results).
Daroyal ® produces very long spadices
(similar as with Dar se lect ® )
and should be planted in protected
sites.
Early Season
Daroyal ® is sig ni ficantly superior to
the currently favoured early-season
Honeoye in terms of ripening period,
taste, fruit size and plant health.
Growing recommendations for Darselect ®
Darselect ® is a successful variety for
pick-your-own plantations, direct
marketing and the commercial
sector. It is very suitable for early
season production, and it can also
be planted on former strawberry
sites.
Cold-store Darselect ® plants should
be planted in April/May. Fresh plant
material is planted best in early
August.
Plants should be kept free of mildew.
First mildew symptoms show up in
Darselect ® plants at an early stage
and have to be treated immedia tely.
The fruits are not affected by mildew.
When selecting the field keep in
mind that the variety is susceptible
to blossom frost damage.
Darselect ®
– protected variety, Head Licence
Darselect ® blooms early with blossoms
growing above the leaves.
Earlier season production will in-crease
the risk of frost damage. So
make sure you select a well protected
site. Frost irrigation is recommendable
in critical areas.
A cultivation scheme adapted to
the variety will give optimised re -
sults. Especially the yield and the
gloss of the fruits can be further
improved. Where nitrogen re quirements
are concern, apply the usual
80 kg/ha.
The right date of fertiliser application
is important for the plants
to generate blossoms early in
autumn.

The leaf mass development should
be completed by early September.
Therefore, don't apply nitrogen to
newly planted fresh dug material,
or choose a very careful dose.
Modest fertiliser application is also
advisable in the spring (although it
has to be considered that a larger
leaf mass can help minimise the risk
of sunburn damage). The main
nitro gen application is done after
the harvest.
When growing Darselect ® make
sure you maintain a proper balance
of potassium and mag nesium in
the soil (soil analysis). Magnesium
application during the fruit growth
phase can enhance the gloss of the
fruits. We recommend to use leaf
fertilisers.
Early Season
The fruits are perfect for picking
when the outer skin shows a uniform
brick-red colour. Pick every 3 – 4
days, as a rule of thumb. When
harvested ripe, Darselect ® will re -
ward you with fruits of excellent
flavour, flawless quality and good
transport properties.
The right planting depth is crucial for successful production!
Planting/Grading
too deep too high right depth
You will require 30,000 plants per hectare
(for 3 plants per metre and 1 metre spacing between rows)
Cold-store strawberry plants are available in various grades,
which are best described by the crown diameter.
Weak grade A plants (8 – 10 mm)
This grade can be perfectly adequate when planting on light to medium
soils. Do not pick in the planting year, remove the blossoms instead. Plant
as early as possible.
Standard grade A plants (10 – 15 mm)
The most common grade planted. Can be picked in the planting year, but
this will result in less yield.
Grade A+ plants (+ 14 mm)
The perfect grade for 60-day culture. To be planted about 8 – 10 weeks
before the picking date. Good irrigation is essential to succeed with this
time- and cost-intensive production method.
Sonata is a crossbreed variety
(Elsanta x Polka) by Fresh Forward.
It ripens about 1 – 3 days after Elsanta,
producing large, firm and attractive-
ly shaped fruits. The fruit is glossy
and mid-red all over, without any
green tips. The flavour is excellent
with good levels of sugar.
Yet another advantage over Elsanta
is the consistently uni form shape, with
no crippled fruits. The plant is robust
yet susceptible to Ph. Cac torum, which
must be con sidered in your plant
protection scheme. Sonata is sensi-
tive to heat. Earlier production with
plastic film or non-woven material is
possible but won’t give the same effect
as with e.g. Darselect ® . Later cultiva-
tion with straw is an option. Sonata
is the ideal A+/waiting bed plant
material for 60-day culture. These
positive characteristics have made
Sonata a major mid-season variety
Varieties for
pick-your-own fields
When choosing suitable straw berry
varieties for pick-your-own marketing
you should consider the following
points:
Flavour
Good flavour is the key requirement
for successful pick-your- own selling.
Saving money is less of an incentive
for buyers these days, given the
low retail prices and a generally
decreasing demand.
Season
The variety's season should match
the marketing period you intend to
serve. Here are a few tips:
1)„Early bird“ benefit
- It's essential to be among the
very first when the strawberry
season starts. Customers who
have migrated to your rivals
are very hard to get back.
2)Complementary products
- Are there other products that
could be marketed at the same
time – e.g. asparagus at the
beginning of the strawberry
season or raspberries, currants,
etc. towards the end of it.
For the reasons mentioned be fore
we recommend the following varieties:
Early season
Flair: 6 days(!) before
Honeoye, good
flavour
Daroyal: High yielding
variety 3 days
before Honeoy
Honeoye: now as before the
most important
early season variety
Lambada: outstanding flavour,
great for winning
new customers or as
a treat for loyal
customers
Darselect: can be an interesting
early season
variety if earlier
applied
Mid season
varieties for the
pick-your-own
sector; increasingly
used for one-year
the quality
and size of the fruits
Late season
Florence / Yamaska
Being an all-female variety,
Yamaska needs a male for pollina-
ty of excellent quality. To ensure
good pollination, Florence should
be planted at least every sixth to
Yamaska cold-stored material
should not be planted before mid-
May, fresh plants from the first or
second week of August. Yamaska
is a very vigorous variety, comparable
to Malling Pandora. Please
note that a too strong vegetative
growth may impair pollination or
cause al binism.
When picking the two varieties
make sure you are using separate
punnets (different fruit colours). If
you are going to serve the commer-
cial sector only, keep the proporti-
on of Florence as small as pos sible,
because its rather dark fruit colour
is likely to be less accepted.
Here are some recommendations
to follow:
- Late planting date for cold-
(from mid-May)
- In-row plant spacing should
be 40 to 50 cm, spacing
between rows 1 metre
Cultivation instructions for raspberry fresh plants in Jiffy-7
or tray plant system
Introduction
Concerning raspberry fruit production,
development has not stopped over the
last few years. New cultivation methods,
such as short-rotation culture, are under-
way. Difficulties in tra di tional cultivation
have shown us that many problems increa-
se with the age of a plantation. Like with
strawberry cultivation, most of these pro-
blems resolve themselves when shorter
cultivation is applied. This tendency has
been confirmed by hands-on experience
gained in cooperation with growers. Using
a new cultivation method is only part of
it all. Even so, when correctly applied, it
can bring profitable results for the grower.
Now as before “Good Agricultural
Practice” is what matters most. When
starting from scratch with the new culti-
vation technology, you cannot afford to
do things half-heartedly. The following
recommendations will help you achieve
successful results in raspberry cultivation.
Soil preparation
Thorough soil preparation and well established,
well fertilised, fine planting beds
are the cornerstones of a success ful start.
The root balls of the plants in the Jiffy-7
pots or tray plant system are only between
4 and 6 cm long. Needless to say, the
planting bed must be adapted to the situation.
Ridge cultivation
Cultivation on ridges (15 – 20 cm high
and 40 – 60 cm wide) gives the crop
a warmer environment with optimum
water and air supply (no moisture buildup).
The difference is significant, especially
in heavy soils.
Cultivation on plastic film
When planting on plastic film make sure
it has a firm hold and does not flap. Do
not just dig holes with a stake, it is the
worst planting method.
Procedure
Bear in mind that the roots are only
4 or 5 weeks old when you plant them,
so they are sensitive to mechanical strain.
Planting errors inevitably result in plant
failure and reduced yields. Give precise
instructions to your staff and keep a close
eye on their work.
Raspberries
33

34
Plastic film must have a firm hold (A)
Burn- or cut-out hole (B)
The ridge surface underneath must be
visible (C)
Planting hole (D)
The soil must be moist enough to keep the
planting hole in shape. Use a suitable
dibble to make the hole (D). Best of all, pour
about 0.25l of water into the hole cut into the
plastic film before making the planting hole.
Place the plant carefully into the hole (E)
Cover the root with about 2 – 3 cm of fine
soil and firm the soil gently (F)
A hole in the plastic film of 5 – 8 cm is per-
fect ly sufficient, it can be increased the next
year if required. The advantage about using
plastic film is that it eliminates the need for
soil herbicides and facilitates weed control.
Moreover, it gives you the positive side effect
of suppressed young cane growth in the
ensuing years, so you only have to check the
cane in the planting hole.
Drip irrigation
Drip irrigation is important for water
supply and fertilisation. Raspberry plants
have shallow roots up to 1.5 m long in the
row, so drip irrigation alone won’t do.
To exploit the growth potential to the full,
wide-area irrigation must be provided in dry
periods. The soil should be kept moist but
never be wet. Automatic drip irriga tion is
convenient to use but is often a problem. Keep
an eye on the plants’ water demand.

Fertilisation
Drip irrigation fertilisation alone won’t do.
Additional wide-area irrigation must be
provided in late summer after planting as
well as in the crop year. Get in touch for
the standards. Hands-on experience shows
that – correct fertilisation and irrigation
provided – it is possible to get 1.6 to 1.8
m of cane growth even for plantings made
as late as mid-June. The largest growth
rate is achieved in August and September,
when the root and foliage volume almost
rises by the square. Therefore, it is impor-
tant to provide adequate water and ferti-
liser in those months. The nitrogen content
in the soil should be at least 68 – 80 kg.
Measures upon plant reception
Supplied plants can be immediately plan-
ted after being watered. If you cannot plant
straight away, keep the plants in a slight-
ly shaded place and supply with water.
Plants supplied lying in refrigerated trucks
should be watered before planting. Where
this is impossible the plants can be stored
in the cold store at 4 – 8°C for a maximum
of one week.
Cutting the shoot tips
When the plants have established them-
selves, cut off the shoot tips to raise 2 or
3 shoots per plant, depending on the
variety. With this measure applied the
season will start between 7 and 10 days
earlier than usual, and you’ll get an optimum
cane length. Give it a try, we will
gladly advise you on this cutting technique.
The basic rule is as follows: the more vigorous
a variety, the better the climate conditions,
the more shoots you’ll get. It’s
better to have only 1 or 2 shoots per plant
and achieve the required height of 1,6 - 1,8
metre. Remember: the more shoots, the
shorter the canes. Meeker can easily have
2 – 3 shoots, Ample and Tulameen a maximum
of 2 shoots. It’s important to remove
re-dundant side shoots through out the
vegetation period.
Trellising and tying
While formerly, raspberry plants used to
be fixed to wires, we are exclusively using
strings for short cultures. (Make sure to use
strong enough string – ideally 320 m/kg).
The distance between the poles is 4 – 6
m, depending on the variety. Round poles
are best because they won’t damage the
strings. Fix the lowest double string at 40
cm, and add another three with a spacing
of about 50 cm in between. If you secure
the plants with bamboo poles you can do
without the lower string and tie the initially
soft shoots by means of a Max Tapener
gun. Fix the canes between the two strings
with a Rocafix staple gun.
Plant protection
Plant protection during the planting year
is confined to spider mite control, there is
considerably less need for fungicides. How-
ever, it is your part to keep things under
control and take measures if needed be.
The information given above makes no
claim to be complete, its relevance may
vary from region to region.
“The master’s eye fattens the horse,” says
a Spanish proverb. This also ap plies, in a
wider sense, to your raspberry plantation.
A watchful eye and untiring commitment
are essential for you to succeed. We wish
you all the best.
Raspberries – Long Canes
Long Cane raspberry plants, as the name
suggests, are long canes featuring diffe-
rent numbers of flower buds which can
develop fruits in the year they are planted.
Basically, there are two different types of
Long Cane, bare-root or potted. Bare-root
Long Canes are canes 1.60 m – 2 m long
that are gained from a raspberry propa-
gation field. Depending on the density of
the material planted and the light condi-
tions, the canes have different lengths of
internodes and thus different numbers of
flower buds.
The canes should be well rooted with
many fine hair roots. When looking at a
typical raspberry field where the roots
have spread all over the place, even bet-
ween the rows, it becomes obvious that
root formation and water uptake can
quickly become the limiting factor in a
Long Cane culture with bare-root plants.
This is why most producers are using pot-
ted plants. These are planted into a con-
tainer as potted green plants and then
grown on a Tonkin bamboo pole. Most
commonly, one or two green plants are
planted in one container. Where there is
only one green plant in a container, the
plant is pinched off to leave two canes to
grow. The goal is to get a container with
two canes about 1.80 m high with 25 – 30
buds each.
The plants can be directly placed into a
plastic tunnel for early crop production.
It is also possible to freeze the containers
at minus 2°C in a cold store. The contai-
ners can be placed out at various times
in spring to get an extended raspberry
picking season with consistent fruit qua-
lity. The main variety for Long Cane pro-
duction is Tulameen, but Glen Ample is
also suitable.
