For the past five years, it has been
my honor to serve as Campaign
Chair for the Here’s to Dear Old Herzl
capital campaign. I am extremely
excited to announce to you that we
have not only reached our $8 million
goal in pledges and commitments, we
have exceeded it.
Since we announced our campaign,
we have all seen many challenges
both economic and personal.
That being said, for me, and hopefully
the rest of you, this campaign has
been one of the most gratifying experiences
I have had either in the forprofit
or not-for-profit world.
As Theodor Herzl said, “If you
will it, it is no dream.” The success
of this campaign was made possible
by all of you who not only care about
Herzl, but truly recognize that Herzl
Camp is the critical element of a quality
summer experience for the youth
in our communities. The Herzl experience
is critical to the development
of campers and staff, guaranteeing
the leadership of our community for
many years to come.
We started out with an $8 million
goal. To date, we have raised
$8,150,000 with pledges still coming

and expand much of camp.
This is certainly something we
can all be proud of and makes me
confident that we have the physical
facility to serve our community for
the next 68 years as Herzl Camp has
served us for the past 68 years. Just
as important as the facility, the leadership
that has been developed
through our fund-raising efforts, facility
planning and construction oversight
has been tremendous to watch.
These are new talents and capabilities
that have been added to the
Herzl Camp Board, its staff, and our
extended family of dedicated volunteers
who played a critical role in
this very successful campaign. Much
like the camp’s founders who came
together to create Herzl Camp out of
nothing but a good idea and their
hard work, we have done our part.
As they laid the foundation for the
first 65 years, all of us have stepped
up to ensure that the next 65 will be
just as successful. I know they are
smiling down on us today!
I would like to make special mention
of the hard work and passion
exhibited by Holly Guncheon, our
Development Director, as well as
Anne Hope, our Camp Director, along
with Drea Lear and Gary Kibort, without
whose talents and full-time dedication
this effort would not have
been possible. A big thanks to Todd
Geller and his building committee as
well as to Jason Grais, the finance
chair, without whose passion for
detail, none of these improvements
would have been possible. Sincere

Did you have a New Year’s
Resolution for 2013? And if so,
have you been sticking to it since the
beginning of the year? Like many people,
I made a New Year’s resolution this
year. I have heard that the most common
resolutions are: eating healthier,
exercising more, losing weight, and getting
finances in order. These are all
very worthy promises and it is impressive
when a person puts their mind to
something and makes a positive
change in their life.
However, this is about the time
that reality of life makes it very difficult
to stick to these new plans and some of
those goals start to give way. The
demands of work, family and other
obligations get in the way of putting
our time and energy into these positive
As the director of a Jewish camp,
I spend a lot of time thinking
about Jewish education.
Does camp have a responsibility
to teach our campers about Jewish
life or just make it fun for them to be
Jewish? What should our campers
learn every summer? How should
they learn it? Do we teach enough?
Too much? Is it enough for our
campers to just feel Jewish or to they
need to “know” Jewish? And what do
they need to know…how to spread
cream cheese on a bagel or what happened
to the Assyrians and the Hittites
in the ancient world?
Our board has laid out five Core
Jewish Themes that we believe
should be incorporated into camp. In
no particular order, the themes are:
• Israel and Zionism
• Jewish Ritual and Practice
• Jewish Values and thought
• Ruach
• Tikun Olam

motivation, or commitment, or support,
some of us are able to persevere
and to make lasting changes in their
lives.
We have experienced lasting
resolve at Herzl Camp over the last several
years. No, it was not in the form of
New Year’s Resolutions. However, our
community did pledge to help make
Herzl Camp a better place. We did persevere
and the results are phenomenal.
Together, we raised $8,150,000 – even
going beyond our original goal! Friends
from all over the world and of all ages
contributed to this project making it
something we can all be proud of.
As I look to the summer of 2013, I
see basketballs flying around the gym
and many more kids creating awesome

Drea Lear, Rabbi Joseph Robinson,
our part-time Director of Jewish
Education, and I have been meeting
to find fun and creative ways to incorporate
these five concepts into our
camp programming. Our goal isn’t to
make camp “more Jewish” but “better
Jewish.” The first thing we did was to
examine what we already do in each
program, through a Jewish lens.
For example, in Haatid, we work
to have our 5th and 6th grade
campers focus their social interactions
within their cabin group. We
want these campers to feel the connection
of friends based in their own
cabin. We want each camper to do
their part in making all their cabin
mates feel welcome and safe in the
cabin. The Haatid campers often
have cabin names and cabin cheers.
They feel a loyalty to their cabin and
their cabin-mates. This summer, we
will label this behavior as the Jewish
value of hachnasat orachim - welcom-

Not only will campers be sleeping in
our wonderful new cabins, but they

For years, we have stressed
peace and tranquility in the cabin but
we haven't labeled it Shalom Bayit -
peace in the house. This summer,
your child will come home from camp
knowing what Shalom Bayit means.
Another example of incorporating
our core concepts into what we
already do relates to simply cleaning
camp and our cabins. We will be connecting
nikayon, cleaning camp, to
the concept of Tikkun Olam, repairing
the world. When your child comes
home from camp this summer, let
them know that making their bed and
keeping the house clean is their practice
for helping to make the world a
better place, for repairing the world. I
will be sure to let you know if it works
in my house.

A series following the lives of our alumni
Where are they now: Amanutie Cuties
Remember starting your first
lanyard? Or spending precious
time during minucha working on the
friendship bracelet you were making
for your new friend? How about mastering
the perfect “tie dye swirl” on
your t-shirt? If wasn’t for the guidance
(and extreme patience) of the
Amanut staff, we’d all still be struggling
with that first lanyard.
You can spot a Herzl Camp
Amanutie Cutie from a mile away as
they literally wear their love of art
on their sleeves—hair dusted with
glitter specks, fingernails stained
with vibrant dyes, hands decorated
with dried clay, wrists and ankles
wrapped in handmade friendship
bracelets, shoes sporting drops of
wax, pants decorated with paint
splatters and the requisite tie dyed
t-shirt.
PERCI CHESTER
Perci was the Assistant Amanut
Director to Arlene (Cooper) Shaw in
1962 and eventually became the
Amanut Director the following summer
in 1963.
“The experience of working with
Arlene encouraged me to have confidence
in my ability to teach, which I
did for many years in all levels,” says
Perci. Arlene also inspired her when
it came to Bikkurim. Arlene would
direct them to transform one of the
buildings into an entirely different
environment for the campers. They
brought in natural elements and long
screens made of wax paper that contained
stenciled designs and placed
lighting behind them so the entire
building would come alive with sensations
of color and light.
When asked what she remembers
most about camp, Perci recalled
the natural and deep connections
she formed with everyone at camp –
“it felt very much like family,” she
says. Camping under the stars by the
river on a day off was another
favorite memory. “Seeing the stars
and hearing the rush of water and all
the living beings in harmonious
song” was a thrill for Perci.
Perci has been an art educator
for many years and has taught in colleges
and art schools everywhere
from Boston and Providence to San
Francisco and the Twin Cities. She
currently lives in Minneapolis where
she is a professional artist making
public art and exhibiting sculpture,
paintings and prints in galleries and
museums.
Perci’s advice for future Amanut
staff:
“Teaching others is a great way
to learn. One clarifies thinking and
presents challenges that engage and
stimulates new ideas. Follow your
personal dreams and passionately
embrace your intuition.”
MARY BETH (RUTSTEIN) KIBORT
Mary Beth began her Herzl career as
babysitter for Rabbi Bill and Dena
Horn’s children in 1967. She became
an Ozo in 1968, a Bogo in 1969 and
then transitioned to amanut. She was
Co-Amanut Director (with Andi Upin)
in 1970 and Co-Amanut Director
(with Marsha Golob) in 1971. While
she is no longer teaching ceramics
(her favorite chug), she still has her
potter’s wheel. And, while she may
not do any more weaving, one of the
most unique chugs she ever taught
was underwater basket weaving.
One of Mary Beth’s favorite
memories from camp was attending
Sichot led by Ateret Cohen (z’l), who
was an incredible storyteller. “It was

my first experience in learning about
social action and community service.
I was 8-years old (my first year at
Herzl) and she made such an impression
on me that my career choices
also involved social action and community
service as an Occupational
Therapist, Social Worker (MSW),
Master of Public Health in Maternal
and Child Health (MPH), and currently
as a Child Psychologist (PsyD),”
says Mary Beth.
Mary Beth and her husband,
Phil, have three sons. The oldest is
married “to her adorable daughterin-law”
and they have two daughters.
Mary Beth and Phil lived in Mendota
Heights, Minnesota for 25 years, but
moved to Minnetonka, Minnesota 8
years ago so they could be closer to
their fabulous granddaughters.
Mary Beth’s advice to future
Amanut staff:
“Do what you love and then
share your passion and pass it on.”
AMY BUKSTEIN

with Annie (Warren) Rude in 1997.
When asked about her favorite chug

to teach, she responded, “Could it
really be anything besides tie dye?
There was nothing like seeing a
camp full of staff and kids with
blue/green hands for a week and
proudly sporting their hand made tie
dyes! I'm still not sure I ever really
mastered the spiral though.” Candle
making was another favorite because
it was a chance to get messy and create
something to give away during
candle sharing.
While she loved Amanut, Amy’s
favorite thing about Herzl was Shabbat.
“Starting with the whole camp
CLEAN and dressed in white, walking
in the caravan, the beautiful, mellow
singing after dinner, and of course
finishing off Saturday night with ice
cream bars. It was always such a
magical time at camp.”
There are lots of lessons to be
learned in Amanut but Amy thinks
the best life lessons are learned at
camp in general. “I think working at
camp teaches you how to roll with
the punches, improvise and have fun
in any situation. You plan all these
fun activities for your campers and
sometimes things don't work out the
way you plan. The campers aren't
excited by the activity, or it's unexpectedly
heavy dewing, so a moonlit
pontoon ride turns into puddle jumping
instead. Life is like that too.
Things don't always go as planned,
so sometimes you just play Ga Ga.
And that's fun too.”
When asked how camp impacted
her as an adult, Amy says, “Being
a camper and a staff member has
shaped me in so many ways. Being
at camp lets you live in a magical

world for a few weeks a year, and
you carry some of that magic around
with you forever. It's like being in a
secret club. You can never hear the
word ‘announcement’ again without
wanting to burst into song.”
Amy currently makes custom,
hand-painted Ketubahs and has even
made some for former Herzl
campers. Amy and her husband,
Ben, live in Northeast Minneapolis
with their daughter, Delilah, and are
expecting baby #2 in February (she
told us we should share that news).
Amy’s advice to future Amanut
staff:
“Go for it! I think it's a little
daunting to be faced with the idea that
you are in charge of a whole area of
camp. But everyone (staff and
campers alike) is up there for the
same reason…to have fun. So just
have fun with it and everything will
fall into place!”
KAYLA GALE
Kayla was Amanute Cutie from 2005-
08. Her all-time favorite chug to
teach was advanced painting.
“Watching the campers hang
their finished work on the wall
almost brought me to tears. I was so
pleased with their hard work and
loved to see how proud they were. I
especially enjoyed sitting with each
camper and guiding them while they
put their final touches of paint on
the canvas that would bring their
work to life,” she says. While painting
was a classic, one of the most
unique activities they offered was
Jackson Pollack Day, where they set
out large pieces of wood from maintenance
and used many different
materials like balloons, spray bottles,
and sponges to wildly apply the
paint, just like Pollack. “It was
messy, but tons of fun.”
One of Kayla’s favorite activities
was taking kayaks out to the middle
of the lake during Shabbat rotations.
It was a peaceful and relaxing break
during the day. Another favorite was
when she joined Alana Gale for Rate-
A-Room (to judge the cleanliness and
creative décor of each cabin). And
finally, she will always remember
when she and Rachel Javitch (neither
were bunk staff at the time) had

the opportunity to be “co-counselor
aunties” for a wonderful B'Yachad
girls tzrif while their real madachrim
were on their Teva Trek trip.
Her simple and best lesson
learned from camp? “Follow your
passion and live in the moment.”
“Herzl camp made me comfortable
and confident to follow my dreams,
be true to my beliefs and has
allowed me to embrace my extreme
sillies. It taught me how to be a
leader, and, above all, gave me the
opportunity to find and practice my
true passion (teaching art)”.
Kayla currently lives in Chicago
teaches art at one of the top elementary
schools in Illinois. She is also
the National Art Education Association's
(NAEA) Early Professional Division
President where she is able to
educate students, teachers, and parents
about arts education throughout
the country. She continues to
draw, paint, and frolic with Alana
Gale and Marissa Lehman. And most
notably, she refers to her art classroom
as her “grown-up Amanut”.
Kayla’s advice to future Amanut
staff:
“Enjoy it! You have the keys to
amanut! Instead of program planning
at night, take some time to create your
own artwork. Be inspired by your love
for camp and the outdoors. Get creative!”

So much has changed and
improved at camp in the past
three years. But ask your favorite
camper or staffer what’s needed and
you will quickly hear the list:
• Indoor play space for rainy days and
night time use. Did you know that
July is the rainiest month of the
year? We do!
• Another showerhouse (Haks). No
more lines!
• Amanut! There’s always a waiting
list for arts and crafts.
That list is the majority of what
is currently underway in the final
phase of our capital campaign. Two
more projects are underway that
may not rise to the top of a camper’s
list are a remodeled and expanded
Marpeah (infirmary) and housing for
staff with families.
This article provides some
details on the additions and expansions
that will greet campers when
they arrive this summer.
SPORTS STRUCTURE
An indoor play space for basketball
and all-camp gatherings. This space
has eight breakout rooms for dance,
a weight room, yoga, and other
smaller group activities, as well as
equipment storage.

New programming and sports space awaits campers in 2013!
Final phase completes renovation and expansion
The sports structure will house multiple
basketball courts and breakout rooms
“This building has large doors
with screened openings so we preserve
the feeling of being in nature
without the rain and the bugs,” said
Todd Geller, Building Committee
Chair.
“For most of the summer, the
camp population is 550 campers and
staff. Indoor space is at a premium
for nightly use and when it rains or
there’s mud from recent rains,” said
Gary Kibort, Director of Operations.
“This structure will make every day
at camp more fun.”
ANOTHER HAKS
Earlier in the campaign, we added
20% more camper beds and a third
showerhouse.
“When we began this, we were
required to bring all of camp from
1950s code to modern-day code.
That means we need a fourth showerhouse
by 2013 according to the
state of Wisconsin,” said Kibort.
“While there is a regulatory
requirement, every camper will tell
you that short lines and hot water
make every day at camp better!” said
Anne Hope, Camp Director.
AMANUT
We’re adding a second building to
the existing arts and crafts building
and connect it all with an accessible
deck that will serve as an outdoor
classroom.
“Right now, 60 campers a day
participate in arts and crafts. With
400 campers on site, there’s always a
waiting list,” said Hope. “And the
building isn’t accessible. We’d like
all children to have the chance to be
creative and try new things at
camp.”
Amanut doubles in size and keeps
historic building intact
MARPEAH
While campers wouldn’t know it, any
volunteer doctor or nurse would tell
you that our 1980s-era infirmary is
not designed for the health needs of
today’s campers.
“Over 30% of the camp population
takes daily medication,” said
Hope. “Our Marp isn’t designed for
that kind of foot traffic.”
The expansion will make the
building accessible, add a medications
dispensary and take us from
one to four exam rooms.
STAFF HOUSING
As Herzl has deepened and improved
our programming, we’ve added some
expert staff, like our newly hired Jewish
educator (a shared employee
with the Heilicher Minneapolis
Jewish Day School). Professional
staff need a place to live at camp.
“We’d like to take full advantage
of the talented artists and musicians
and even sports instructors who are
part of the Herzl family, and now
we’ll have a place to house them,”
said Hope.
Because we’ve exceeded our
goal, we are also upgrading our summer
staff housing, with new plumbing
and interior improvements.

Grant to enhance Israel education at camp
Goodman Initiative selects Herzl
Herzl Camp has joined the
Goodman Camping Initiative
for Modern Israel History to develop
a well-rounded Israel Education Curriculum,
which will complement our
Israeli Camper Program, which brings
pre-teens from Sderot to participate in
our Tzofim (7th & 8th grade) program,
from June 17 - July 15, side-byside
with American campers.
“The experiential learning that
living with an Israeli cabinmate provides
is second-to-none,” said Anne
Hope, Camp Director. “This program
comes at the perfect time and the
spirit fits so well with our unique
camp model.”
The program provides curriculum
and training to our summer staff
so that they have the tools and skills
to integrate Israel education into daily
camp life in a fun and interesting way.
Some of the themes of the curriculum
are:
• Israel and Me: Providing opportunities
for campers to explore their
personal connections with Israel,
as well as how it fits into their
camp community and their lives
• Hope -- Jewish State, Jewish
Values: Understanding how the
hope for a better future fuels our
dreams for Israel as a Jewish,
democratic state, at peace with its
neighbors and enmeshed in strong
ties with Jews around the world.
• Pioneering -- Bringing Dreams to

Mosows, and Shragg’s have come
together to create a scholarship
endowment at camp. The fund provides
scholarships for first-time
campers who would otherwise not
be able to attend camp.
“Herzl Camp has meant so much
to our families. We want to do our
part to ensure that all kids can experience
the same opportunities our
children were able to have,” said
Tom Kieffer. “Their camp experiences
helped shape them into who
they are today and we are so appreciative
for all that Herzl has brought
to their lives.”

Father and son, Steve and Joel Bard
share a love of camp. and that
shared experience led them to help
others attend camp.
“My first connection with Herzl
Camp was as a camper for three
summers (1951--53). When I was in
college, I spent two summers on the
staff (1961--62) which were two of the
most rewarding and memorable
times in my life. My nickname was
"Ali Baba" after the song I used to
lead in the old Chadar Ochel. My
two oldest children went to Herzl but
never caught the Herzl bug. However,
my youngest son, Joel, was a
camper, an Ozo, and counselor. Joel
loved the Herzl experience as much
as I did. He was known at camp as
"Shrek" though I never did know
exactly why.
When I became involved in the
1960-64 Staff Reunion, I realized that
although I had supported other Jewish
organizations over the years, I
had never done anything for Herzl
Camp, even though it had played a
more meaningful role in my Jewish
life. I also was shocked to learn how
expensive camp had become even
since my kids went to Herzl.
I talked it over with Joel and
decided that we wanted to create a
scholarship endowment to help
young Jewish kids have a Herzl experience
like my family had enjoyed.”

This fund has recently been created
by Phil and Phyllis Garon to provide
unrestricted funds for Herzl Camp. It
was established in honor of
Harvey and Shirley Ansel, Phyllis’
parents, and to reflect how much
Herzl has meant to the Garon &
Ansel families.

counselors at Herzl and served on its
Board of Directors. Phil is presently
on the Board of the Herzl Camp
Foundation. Both of their children
went to Herzl and they are hopeful
that their grandchildren will one day
be campers, too.

remembers Solly Robins, one of its founding
directors, with a 2-week camp scholarship
for a child in need.
Solly Robins was a good friend and
business associate of George Kaplan. He
served on the Kaplan Foundation board for
50 years.
“Solly always had a clear vision of what
my grandfathers’s foundation should focus
on,” said David Toushin, George Kaplan’s
grandson and President of the Foundation.

“We feel that a scholarship is a fitting tribute
to a man who cared so deeply. It gives another
young Jewish person a chance to connect to the community and
perhaps grow into a pillar of the community, like Solly and George.”
Solly founded the law firm now know as Robins, Kaplan, Miller, &
Ciresi, where he was an active partner until he died in 1999. At the
time of its founding, few law firms would hire Jews. Over his 60 years
at the firm, it grew to be one of the most respected and well-recognized
firms in the United States.
George Kaplan was actively involved in the early years of Herzl
Camp, serving as the second President of Board of Directors. He was
deeply committed to all forms of Jewish education. In the 1950s, he
led several fundraising drives to build additional cabins and the construction
of the Ulam so camp could grow and serve more campers.

STEVEN & CAROLE LANG ENDOWMENT
Carole and Steve toured camp last
summer and had some time to consider
the role that Herzl Camp plays
in their family and in the community:
Carole was a camper for one summer;
two of Steve and Carole’s three
children attended as campers and
one came as staff and met his wife
while on staff; and now two of their
seven grandkids are attending, with
more “aging-in” soon.
“When the kids get off the bus
crying because they didn’t want to
leave camp and they need two days
to recover, you know they love it!”
said, Steve.
“We see know how much our
kids and grandkids love it and that
made us think that we’d like to help
another child have that chance.
Herzl Camp brings kids into a Jewish
environment. They love the friends
that they make and they gain all
kinds of the independence. We feel
that it is important that every child
should be able to have that experience,”
said Carole.
So Carole and Steve are doing
their part to make that happen by
creating a scholarship endowment to
ensure that all children can attend
Herzl Camp – now and in the future!

A Teva alum’s view of Teva Trek, Herzl’s outdoor adventure program
This one’s not in the book
Every single summer since
B’Yachad, I have been asked
why on Earth did I choose to do
Teva Trek. “You could have gone to
Israel, and what is so appealing
about living in the woods?” I always
respond that there are so many
other opportunities to go to Israel as
opposed to the single time that I
could go to Teva. (I did end up going
to Israel—not-so-coincidentally on
Taglit Birthright’s program Israel
Outdoors.) And then I explain what
was so great about Teva Trek and
why it was my best summer at Herzl
Camp.
The smallness of the program
creates the inevitability that you
become good friends with every
camper. After all, living in a tent
with seven other girls made it impossible
to avoid anyone. As Missy
Baddin would tell you, she would
wake up every morning to find that
she had rolled from her bed onto
mine. The program’s intimacy was
even more evident this past summer
when I was Teva staff. I saw kids who
had known each other for six years,
but had never talked to each other.

By the end of the summer,
each camper said how
happy he or she was to
make such close connections
with people they never
thought they would have as
friends.
Then there are the
activities done at camp. We
would cover ourselves in
mud and crawl through the
woods as silently as possible
like we were Navy Seal
Team Six. There was a late
night scavenger hunt deep
in the forest full of hidden
surprises (mostly Louie
Sloven hiding in the bushes
and jumping out in a skeleton costume).
There also was the food we
made ourselves over an open fire—
most notable were the Paninis, stir
fry, and banana pancakes.
But what makes Teva Trek my
favorite program is the weeklong
trip. The closest building with running
water is no longer a five-minute
walk; it’s a ten-mile canoe ride. Our
guides handed us the map and compass
(I mean this literally). It was
our job to portage (carry
our canoes across land to
the next navigable water),
to carry our gigantic
Duluth packs, to set up
all the tents, and to wash
our own dishes after we
eat the meal that we
cooked over the fire we
made. That trip is a
sense of independence
and responsibility that 16year
olds are often too
sheltered to experience
until after they graduate
high school.

For the first time, Teva Trekker’s will explore
Montana’s Missouri River
Furthermore, each trip holds its
own unique experiences. For my
camper summer, it was the day that
we woke up at sunrise to get to a
quaint waterfall. It was so still and
silent, that moment was so peaceful
throughout the senses, I can count
that as the only time I have felt bliss
and know it was the best day of my
life. As staff last summer, my
campers’ moment was probably
when they kayaked through sea
caves. The space was so small, we
had to wade inch-by-inch, allowing
us to etch the National-Geographicblue
water reflecting on red walls in
our minds.
Maybe my decision to do Teva
Trek merely came down to going to
Israel now or having another summer
at camp and go to Israel later,
but staffing it came down to sharing
my best memories as a camper. It is
not the expected path for someone
to take; as our Shabbat theme was
called, “This One’s not in the Book.”
But as Friday night song session
often went, those ended up being the
best songs played.

received the Pomegranate Prize from
the Covenant Foundation. The Pomegranate
Prize is awarded to promising
Jewish educators for their

in Jewish educational settings across

Ensuring that Herzl Camp’s future is bright...
Five years ago, there were many
questions about whether Herzl
Camp could raise $8 million to expand
and renovate camp. The questions
have been answered! The Herzl Family
stepped up and created a facility to
serve our kids long into the future!
Along the way, another important,
but less noticed, thing happened during
this campaign: The Herzl Camp
Association Board of Directors
approved the establishment of a new
and separate non-profit called the Herzl
Camp Foundation.
The Herzl Camp Foundation
Board is focused on ensuring the longterm
stability and viability of Herzl
Camp through donor support. By
inspiring philanthropic support, the
Foundation helps Herzl Camp provide
the high quality camp programs, maintain
its land and facilities properly, and
ensure access to camp for children of
all abilities and financial means.
Currently, donor support provides
many important programs and services
for today’s campers. Among them:
• Scholarship – Each summer 200
campers attend camp on a scholarship
through the Herzl Camp Foundation.
The five-year goal is to
increase that support to $350,000
each summer.
• Jewish Education – Last summer,
the Foundation began
supporting the part-time Director
of Jewish Education position
at camp. This is a
collaboration with the Heilicher
Minneapolis Jewish Day
School with partial national
funding. The local funding that
the Foundation must secure
grows each year.
• Israel Education – For several
years, donors have provided funds
to create a unique, experiencial
learning opportunity, where Herzl
brings pre-teen campers to participate
side-by-side with American
campers. This year, that program is
being expanded with a modern
Israeli history curriculum and staff
training through the Goodman Institute.
• Inclusion Services – Children today
have more psychological and emotional
challenges. For the first time
ever, the top five disabilities affecting
American children are mental health
problems, rather than physical problems.
Today, 8% of children reported
a disability that limited their
activity, a fourfold increase since
1960, according US Department of
Health and Human Services. Donors

help support a camp social worker,
two inclusion specialists, and a dedicated
kitchen staff member to integrate
and support campers with
special needs.
The Herzl Camp Foundation is
seeking support for these program
needs as well as creating a maintenance
reserve to protect the $8 million
facility investment the community just
made, creating endowments for longterm
financial stability, and developing
a robust program to encourage
planned giving through donor’s wills or
retirement plans.
Fortunately, the Here’s to Dear Old
Herzl Campaign proved that there’s a
deep well of support for Jewish youth
and Herzl Camp. We are confident that
Herzl’s future is in good hands - yours!
