Ensuring that Herzl Camp’s future is bright...
Five years ago, there were many
questions about whether Herzl
Camp could raise $8 million to expand
and renovate camp. The questions
have been answered! The Herzl Family
stepped up and created a facility to
serve our kids long into the future!
Along the way, another important,
but less noticed, thing happened during
this campaign: The Herzl Camp
Association Board of Directors
approved the establishment of a new
and separate non-profit called the Herzl
Camp Foundation.
The Herzl Camp Foundation
Board is focused on ensuring the longterm
stability and viability of Herzl
Camp through donor support. By
inspiring philanthropic support, the
Foundation helps Herzl Camp provide
the high quality camp programs, maintain
its land and facilities properly, and
ensure access to camp for children of
all abilities and financial means.
Currently, donor support provides
many important programs and services
for today’s campers. Among them:
• Scholarship – Each summer 200
campers attend camp on a scholarship
through the Herzl Camp Foundation.
The five-year goal is to
increase that support to $350,000
each summer.
• Jewish Education – Last summer,
the Foundation began
supporting the part-time Director
of Jewish Education position
at camp. This is a
collaboration with the Heilicher
Minneapolis Jewish Day
School with partial national
funding. The local funding that
the Foundation must secure
grows each year.
• Israel Education – For several
years, donors have provided funds
to create a unique, experiencial
learning opportunity, where Herzl
brings pre-teen campers to participate
side-by-side with American
campers. This year, that program is
being expanded with a modern
Israeli history curriculum and staff
training through the Goodman Institute.
• Inclusion Services – Children today
have more psychological and emotional
challenges. For the first time
ever, the top five disabilities affecting
American children are mental health
problems, rather than physical problems.
Today, 8% of children reported
a disability that limited their
activity, a fourfold increase since
1960, according US Department of
Health and Human Services. Donors

help support a camp social worker,
two inclusion specialists, and a dedicated
kitchen staff member to integrate
and support campers with
special needs.
The Herzl Camp Foundation is
seeking support for these program
needs as well as creating a maintenance
reserve to protect the $8 million
facility investment the community just
made, creating endowments for longterm
financial stability, and developing
a robust program to encourage
planned giving through donor’s wills or
retirement plans.
Fortunately, the Here’s to Dear Old
Herzl Campaign proved that there’s a
deep well of support for Jewish youth
and Herzl Camp. We are confident that
Herzl’s future is in good hands - yours!
