Courtney Ultimate Frisbee Tournament<br />

March 5.<br />

The <strong>to</strong>urnament, hosted by Mar<strong>in</strong>e<br />

<strong>Corps</strong> <strong>Community</strong> Services Ok<strong>in</strong>awa, was<br />

conducted <strong>in</strong> a double-elim<strong>in</strong>ation style,<br />

with teams compet<strong>in</strong>g until they lost<br />

twice.<br />

The teams compet<strong>in</strong>g for the championship<br />

title were: Ultimate Frisbee Gods, Ultimate<br />

Frisbee Ok<strong>in</strong>awa, T’Da S<strong>in</strong>ca, Orca<br />

Dragons, The Other Guys and Tango Delta,<br />

and were compiled of service members,<br />

family members, Ok<strong>in</strong>awans and Status of<br />

Forces Agreement personnel.<br />

After a long day of <strong>to</strong>ugh matches and<br />

landslide vic<strong>to</strong>ries, UFO faced off aga<strong>in</strong>st<br />

T’Da S<strong>in</strong>ca <strong>in</strong> the championship game,<br />

barely hold<strong>in</strong>g the lead follow<strong>in</strong>g the first<br />

half with a score of 8-7.<br />

“We came <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> the second half confident<br />

that we were on the verge of putt<strong>in</strong>g all the<br />

pieces <strong>to</strong>gether,” said Shawn Green, a player<br />

with UFO. “We talked about a change <strong>in</strong><br />

defensive strategy and tak<strong>in</strong>g our time on<br />

offense.”<br />

Each team consisted of seven players<br />

and each match ended when one team<br />

reached 15 goals or the one-hour time limit<br />

expired.<br />

UFO <strong>to</strong>ok control of the second half and<br />

won the game with a score of 14-8.<br />

UFO won the <strong>to</strong>urnament undefeated,<br />

despite that they only had three on the<br />

bench compared <strong>to</strong> T’Da S<strong>in</strong>ca’s seven.<br />

UFO has been <strong>to</strong>gether for five years and<br />

consists of Department of Defense teachers,<br />

service members and SOFA personnel. Together,<br />

they have dom<strong>in</strong>ated all six <strong>to</strong>urnaments<br />

<strong>in</strong> which they have participated.<br />

we were able <strong>to</strong> capitalize on turnovers,”<br />

added Green. “We also did an excellent job<br />

of ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g possession when we had<br />

the disc. It was extremely satisfy<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> w<strong>in</strong><br />

the <strong>to</strong>urnament, especially because of the<br />

manner <strong>in</strong> which we did it.”<br />

Graham Hill, a player with T’Da S<strong>in</strong>ca<br />

and a previous player for UFO participated<br />

alongside local ultimate frisbee players and<br />

has participated <strong>in</strong> n<strong>in</strong>e <strong>to</strong>urnaments s<strong>in</strong>ce<br />

he jo<strong>in</strong>ed the team more than a year ago.<br />

T’Da S<strong>in</strong>ca is an all-Ok<strong>in</strong>awan team with<br />

the exception of Hill.<br />

“The game is fun and excit<strong>in</strong>g, and the<br />

service members handled themselves very<br />

well,” said Hill. “The Ok<strong>in</strong>awan players<br />

fun<br />

love <strong>to</strong> come out and play with the American<br />

teams.”<br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> Taylor, ultimate frisbee is a<br />

valuable <strong>to</strong>ol for both physical fitness and<br />

socializ<strong>in</strong>g with those who share a love of<br />

the game.<br />

“One of the th<strong>in</strong>gs I like best about play<strong>in</strong>g<br />

is the spirit that is out on the field,”<br />

commented Kev<strong>in</strong> Taylor, a player with<br />

UFO. “There are f<strong>in</strong>e athletes and marvelous<br />

people <strong>to</strong> befriend. It’s energiz<strong>in</strong>g, and<br />

I love be<strong>in</strong>g a part of it.”<br />
