CAMP COURTNEY — All III Marine Expeditionary Force 

and Marine Corps Bases Japan Marines are expected to 

maintain the Marine Corps height and weight standards, 

said III MEF’s top leadership March 4. 

Marines must always be ready to answer when the nation 

calls, and a large component of operational readiness 

is the physical fitness of the individual Marines, explained

conducted joint operations called the Continuity 

of Operations Exercise in preparation 

for Exercise Key Resolve here Feb. 25. 

The Continuity of Operations Exercise 

is conducted to ensure interoperability 

between the Air Force and Marine Corps 

to control air operations from one central 

forward deployed location. 

Exercise Key Resolve is designed to 

demonstrate U.S. commitment to the 

ROK – U.S. alliance and enhances the 

combat readiness of the ROK and U.S. 

Operation Winter Surge 

2011, a combined, joint 

event conducted by the U.S. 

Army, U.S. Air Force, and 

ROK and U.S. Marines. 

“This was an important 

deployment for the Marines 

of 3rd Intelligence Battalion 

and the intelligence organizations 

we work with in the

no regrets 

Prepare for transition looking ahead

Throughout their life, many people 

will look back at times and regret 

something. Whether it is something 

they didn’t do but wish they had, 

or something they wish they had done 

differently, does not change the fact that 

there will be regrets in life. 

Many years down the road I am sure 

I will look back on my life and have 

regrets, but the one thing I will never 

regret is becoming a Marine. 

I am now nearing the end of my first 

enlistment and from what I can see 

there is very little chance of a second 

one in my future. Hopefully, that won’t 

be one of my regrets. 

Over the past four 

years, I have managed 

to do a lot of 

things friends I grew 

up with will never 

experience. 

I had the opportunity 

to spend a 

majority of my first 

enlistment living in 

Okinawa, Japan, and 

was afforded many 

opportunities to 

experience the way 

of life in Japan which 

differed quite a bit from the way of life I 

was used to from growing up in the Appalachian 

Mountains of North Carolina 

and Tennessee. 

From Okinawa I had the opportunity 

to travel to the Kingdom of Thailand as 

part of Exercise Cobra Gold in 2009. I 

even served my country in Afghanistan 

and have experienced combat first hand. 

While there are many stories to tell from 

that experience, the ones I prefer telling 

come from getting to experience so 

many different cultures over the last 

four years and all the different people I 

have met. 

Believe it or not, one of the best experiences 

I had was in Thailand. While 

there, I had the opportunity to take part 

in a community relations event. 

This event, sponsored by the chaplains 

who came to Cobra Gold, took 

myself and about 20 other Marines and 

sailors to an orphanage in Pattaya, Thailand 

to help plant trees and take care of

was having the chance to interact with 

the children who lived at this orphanage. 

These children, whose ages ranged 

from 5 to 14 years old, made that day 

one of the coolest experiences of my life. 

When we left the orphanage, the people 

who ran it said we made the kids’ day by 

coming, but I can say those kids made 

our day every bit as much as we did 

theirs. 

But, as the old saying goes, when one 

door closes another opens. 

As I prepare to enter the ranks of all 

former Marines, I realize how important 

and difficult a move this will be for me.

tasks associated

Throughout 

this process,

been reminded of how important it is to 

follow the advice given in the Transition 

Assistance Program and the Transition 

Assistance Management Program. 

I urge everyone who is planning on 

transitioning in the future to pay close 

attention to information passed in these 

courses and to be as proactive as possible 

and begin the many associated 

administrative tasks. 

As of right now I have no clue what 

my life will bring after the Corps. More 

than likely, I will go back to school and 

complete my degree. 

Even with that said, there is only one 

guarantee in my life: with the strength 

and the discipline the Marine Corps has 

instilled in me, there is no way I will let 

myself fail in anything I do. Because of 

the Corps, I will always have great stories 

to tell and no regrets about this part 

of my life lasting only four years.

CAMP FOSTER — The Criminal Investigations 

Division, Provost Marshal’s Office, 

recently created a new tool to help solve 

crimes within the community. 

“The Anonymous Crime Tip Report is 

designed to allow citizens the opportunity to 

anonymously provide police with information 

about criminal activities,” said Gunnery 

Sgt. Carlos Ortega, CID detective, PMO, 

Marine Corps Base Camp Butler. 

Crime tip hotlines are a common tool in 

the U.S. and have proven to be effective, 

said Ortega. Witnesses will be able to report 

a crime from the comfort of their home by 

logging onto www.marine.mil/unit/MCB- 

Butler, clicking on the COPPS icon and 

filling in the form. 

According to PMO, the main goals of the 

program are to collect information about 

criminal activities, provide an alternate 

outlet for citizens to provide police officials 

with criminal information and increase 

chances that a crime will not go unreported. 

The CID requests the forms be as detailed 

as possible, increasing the chances 

of putting a stop to the crime, added Ortega. 

“The minimum requirements on the 

form are who the suspect is, what crime 

was committed, where it happened, when it 

was witnessed and how you as the witness 

know about this crime. If there is not enough 

substantial information, (law enforcement) 

will not be able to act upon the report,” said 

Ortega. “That is why it’s critical to complete 

the form with as much detail as possible. 

The program was established due to 

feedback requesting an alternate way to 

help stop crimes, particularly Spice use, said 

Chief Warrant Officer Jeffery Rodriguez, 

officer-in-charge of CID. 

“The primary avenue to report crimes is 

your chain of command or by notifying law 

enforcement personally,” said Rodriguez. 

“An identifiable eye-witness with a signed 

and sworn statement is the best evidence, 

but the ACT report was designed as an avenue 

to capture the information about crimes 

we would not have obtained otherwise.” 

The reporting system works for crimes 

witnessed both on and off base. As of now, 

the program is being used by the Marine 

Corps, but the other branches are intended 

to integrate the system soon, according to 

Rodriguez. 

The department is in the process of creating 

a 24-hour hotline for crime reporting. In 

the meantime, witnesses without internet or 

computer access are encouraged to contact 

their local law enforcement office.

The purpose of the exercise 

was to requalify joint terminal 

attack controllers in calling 

for, and guiding in fire during 

both day and night operations. 

It also allowed them to evaluate 

and maintain proficiency 

of JTAC and provide a close 

air support demonstration for 

officers with the Japan Ground 

Self-Defense Force. 

Controllers must have six 

successful controls of fire every 

six months to ensure safety 

and compatibility with the pilots. 

Pilots are required to drop 

a certain amount of ordnance 

every six months to maintain 

their qualifications. 

In order to complete a successful 

control, a JTAC must 

execute a “9-line” to the aircraft 

above. A 9-line consists 

of reading coordinates on the 

ground and controlling close 

air support. 

The ground team arrives at 

least 24 hours in advance, sets

GLICO has everything in place, 

they send out call signs to the 

pilots in the area, informing 

them of their readiness. When 

the pilots are within range, 

the JTAC describes the ground 

weather conditions and targets 

to the pilot. When the aircraft 

is ready to fire, the JTAC initiates 

the laser and the pilot 

releases the ordnance. 

The 9-line is the most crucial 

information communicated 

between the ground 

and the aircraft, describing 

the target, the coordinates 

of the target, and what is in 

close proximity to the target, 

whether it be friendly forces or 

non-combatants. If a 9-line is 

delivered incorrectly the target 

may be missed and lives may 

be lost, added Jackson. 

“A high level of proficiency 

is required for the safe delivery 

of ordnance in close 

proximity to friendly forces,” 

said Mead.

Rounds. 5th ANGLICO was 

sighting targets during the day 

with a Pulse Laser Designation 

Range Fire Thermal Imagery 

Device. At night they fire an 

infrared laser ISLID 1000P and 

used a 17C night vision scope. 

The three devices are calibrated 

to send and receive the same 

readings and measurements. 

“This is a good (tool to learn) 

especially for us. We are field 

artillery forward observers,” 

said 1st Lt. Konno Norisato, an 

artillery forward observer with 

1st Airborne Brigade, Camp 

Narashino, JGSDF. “We don’t 

have similar training, and we 

can learn a lot from (the U.S. 

military).”

across the Marine Corps. 

Previously, the Marine Corps 

did not have standardized equipment 

for use in COC’s, allowing 

units to field systems unique 

to their command which created 

a difficult learning curve 

for Marines transferring to new 

units, said Glen Brown, COC new 

equipment training leader, Marine 

Corps Systems Command, 

Headquarters Marine Corps, here 

to teach the Marines to use the 

new system. 

The new COC uses the same 

equipment popular in versions 

throughout the Corps, creating a 

high degree of familiarity with 

most Marines. 

This system standardizes the 

equipment and puts it together in 

a modular and scalable system, 

leaving Marines who have worked 

with COCs before a high level of 

familiarity, said Brown. 

The familiarity allowed Marines 

here from 7th Communication 

Battalion and Headquarters 

and Service Battalion, III MHG 

as well as 9th Engineer Support 

Battalion, 3rd Marine Logistics 

Group, III MEF, and 3rd Intelligence 

Battalion, III MHG, to learn 

quickly under the tutelage of 

MARCORSYSCOM contracted 

instructors. 

The Marines here have set up 

the tents and generators before but 

are still learning how to assemble 

the more complex interior networking 

equipment, said Master 

Sgt. James Knuckles, operations 

chief, S-3, III MHG.

supervision. 

“We are still real new to it right 

now, so having the instructors on 

board helps out,” said Knuckles. 

III MHG expects to participate 

in regular sustainment training to 

ensure Marines operating at the 

COC keep their skill set sharp and 

allow new Marines to be rotated 

into the training to increase the 

pool of service members qualified 

to operate the COC. 

“Train the trainer is basically 

what we are going for,” said Knuckles. 

“We are going to do some sustainment 

training throughout, 

maybe once a quarter just come 

out and set it up.” 

In addition to allowing Marines 

to move between units without 

having to familiarize themselves 

with new equipment, Marines 

can now move in between division, 

regiment and battalion-level 

COCs easily due to the scalable 

and modular construction, said 

Thomas Wright, COC new equipment 

training instructor, MAR- 

CORSYSCOM. 

“The only difference in the 

combat operations center is the 

size of the unit; for example, the 

battalion combat operations center, 

they have all the same equipment, 

just less of it,” said Wright. 

“If a Marine has already worked 

on a smaller COC, then he already 

has an idea of what he needs to do 

(for a division COC).” 

This ability to move Marines in 

from different commands or from 

a subordinate unit, along with the 

rapid deployment ability increase 

the operational readiness of III 

MEF and will serve Marines well 

on future deployments. 

“When they are done here next 

week, these Marines will have 

put the system up twice and torn 

it down three times,” said Wright. 

“So the next time they go out to 

the field, they’ll be able to roll 

out there and do it by themselves 

without having to have civilian 

contractors out there to help them 

do it.”

To validate that his Marines are ready, Glueck 

has called for a weigh-in of all III MEF and MCBJ 

Marines no later than March 15, he said. 

The Commandant of the Marine Corps directed 

that commands focus their attention 

on compliance with Marine Corps height and 

weight standards, and that is what III MEF and 

MCBJ are doing, said Glueck. 

Leading from the front, Glueck and Sgt. Maj. 

Daniel J. Fierle, the MEF’s sergeant major, along 

with several III MEF field grade officers, weighed 

in at Camp Courtney March 4. 

“We just wanted to show the Marines that 

we’re not going to ask them to do anything we’re 

not going to be doing,” said Fierle. “By doing this 

openly, we are setting the example.” 

“This is all about being a basic Marine,” 

Glueck said.

According to Air Force Maj. Vanessa Anderson-Goldwire, a senior intelligence 

duty officer for 7th Air Force, the COOPEX is an evolution designed 

to simulate joint operations in a deployed location in response to an attack 

on the Air Operations Center in the event the Air Force could no longer 

work from the AOC. The Marines and the Air Force need to determine the 

shortfalls, the successes, their ability to mutually perform their processes 

and if they can maintain communications. 

The Marines and airmen performed many different drills in reaction to 

the various scenarios given. 

“Working with the Air Force has been really enjoyable,” said Gunnery 

Sgt. Columbus Wilson Jr., an interface control officer for MTACS-18. “You 

never know what to expect, but everything came together and we worked as 

a team. There were no hiccups. If there were any issues, they were resolved 

right away and we kept on moving forward.” 

At the end of each battle drill, the Marines and Air Force participants 

gave individual status reports for each billet to ensure everyone learned 

from all aspects of the scenario. 

“I’m glad I got to come out here and experience this,” said Anderson-Goldwire. 

“I’ve seen the way the joint interface between the services has progressed 

through the years and … the transition of the change of operations overall.” 

According to Sgt. Miguel Ofray, the Tactical Air Command Center crew 

chief with MTACS-18, working with the Air Force has been great and gives 

a bigger picture of what they do on their side as well as what that Marine 

Corps does.

“As the tip of the spear, it is imperative that 

we are most ready when the nation is least ready. 

Being physically fit is a major component to our 

being ready,” he said. 

“If you’re not fit, you will not be able to withstand 

the rigors of combat,” added Fierle. 

While ultimately, physical fitness and maintaining 

the Corps’ weight standards is the 

responsibility of each individual Marine, leadership 

bears a responsibility as well, agreed the 

general and sergeant major. 

Leaders have to be engaged with their Marines, 

said Glueck. 

“Marines don’t come to us overweight; they 

leave basic training physically fit, within the 

standards,” said Fierle. “Marines don’t show up 

here severely overweight, and they don’t get out 

of standards overnight.

This is the third consecutive year 3rd Intelligence 

Bn. has deployed in support of Winter 

Surge as a battalion. This year, approximately

While in Korea, Marines lived and worked 

in tents. 

“Despite the unusually cold temperatures, 

morale stayed high and improved as the 

U.S. forces acclimatized and got into a battle 

rhythm with the ROK Marines,” said 1st. Lt. 

Casey Munroe, adjutant with 3rd Intelligence 

Bn. 

During the operation, participants performed 

multi-discipline intelligence, surveillance 

and reconnaissance operations, said 

Lindemann. 

The 3rd Intelligence Bn.’s support also 

contributed to the development of the ROK 

Marine Corps intelligence capabilities and 

proficiency, he said. 

“The Marines fully embraced this opportunity 

to integrate the ROK Marines into 

our operations and work closely with sisterservice 

intelligence units; we learned a lot 

from them while reinforcing our own sense 

of what makes us unique as Marines,” he said.

each year, he said. Maintaining the weight standards 

and staying physically fit requires Marines 

to establish and maintain a consistent physical 

training schedule, he said. 

“By maintaining a good fitness routine 

throughout the year you’ll definitely stay within 

standards,” he said.

“I think the airmen and Marines have learned a lot about their own specific 

tasks during this exercise,” said Lt. Col. James Quinn, the assistant operations 

officer for 1st MAW. “More importantly, the Marines learned what their 

counterparts do in the Air Force.” 

Exercise Key Resolve highlights the longstanding and enduring partnership 

and friendship between the two nations and the combined commitment 

to the defense of the ROK and ensuring peace and security in the region.

Terrorists concealed within a civilian population are 

a prevalent enemy of Operation Enduring Freedom. 

Veiled behind a cloak of anonymity, they strike and 

then recede back into the shadows disappearing once more 

into the local populace. 

Putting down the typical weapons of an insurgent and 

picking up the staff of a shepherd or tools of a carpenter may 

temporarily disguise a hostile person but it will not deceive 

trained eyes for long, said a forensics expert at the Central 

Training Area. 

“The people we are dealing with right now are not wearing 

distinctive uniforms, and we need to identify them 

somehow,” said Tim Seguin, a latent print examiner and Forensic 

Material Collection and Exploitation Course instructor. 

“We are identifying them by biometrics.” 

Biometrics are the unique biological traits, such as fingerprints 

or DNA, used to identify individuals, said Seguin. 

Members of Military Police Company, Combat Logistics 

Regiment 37, 3rd Marine Logistics Group, III Marine Expeditionary 

Force, and Army soldiers from 441st Military 

Intelligence Battalion, 500th Military Intelligence Brigade, 

Intelligence and Security Command, participated in FMCEC 

training at the Central Training Area March 8 designed to 

teach them to capture and document biometric data at tactical 

sites in a forward operating environment. 

Troops trained in battlefield forensics will be able to collect 

evidence and process a scene for clues such as fingerprints 

that could lead to the capture of a bomb maker, said 

Seguin. 

“We are building a database of latent fingerprints with 

the automatic-biometric-identification-system,” said Seguin. 

“That’s where all these fingerprints are being deposited, just 

like a criminal database (in the United States).” 

As the database grows and becomes a more inclusive collection 

of insurgents, service members operating in theater 

will be better able to identify and confront this enemy, he 

said. 

“As we get latent fingerprints from bomb making sites or 

terrorist hides, then we can match them up,” said Seguin. 

“I can speak for Iraq when I was there, what we have been 

doing has contributed to a 65 percent drop in (improvised 

explosive device)-related casualties since we started collecting 

biometric intelligence.” 

The technology and techniques behind the FMCEC have 

found new applications in the war on terror but are not 

themselves new, having been a domestic crime-fighting 

staple for some time. 

“It’s the same procedure I’ve used stateside for 20 years 

(as a sheriff),” said Seguin. “You take your photographs, you 

collect your evidence, and you process whatever you can’t 

put in an evidence bag.” 

In addition to helping identify and stop bomb makers 

in war zones, biometric data captured by forensic material 

collection teams is being shared with domestic U.S. government 

agencies and foreign allies to restrict the travel of 

terrorists. 

“It’s a huge part of the global war on terrorism, and on 

top of that, we are benefitting the homeland,” said Senguin. 

“What we are gathering is being shared with (Homeland 

Security), and we are sharing it with our allies.” 

As more FMCEC-trained service members are deployed 

and allowed to utilize this skill set to capture and record the 

biometric data of more insurgents, the growing database will 

see increased effectiveness, according to Fred Hines, FMCEC 

team leader. 

“The goal is to train every Marine, every soldier, everybody 

that is deploying,” said Hines. 

The FMCEC here was a three-day, 30-hour evolution that 

educated Marines and soldiers then tested them with progressively 

more challenging practical application portions, 

said Seguin. 

“It’s amazing to watch … how much they will have 

picked up,” said Hines. 

The improvement will allow them to become vital tools in 

the effort to identify and stop bomb makers and insurgents, 

creating a safer operating environment for all forward-deployed 

forces, as well as strengthening domestic and international 

borders, he said. 

“It saves lives knowing who these bad guys are,” said 

Hines.

“The training is geared toward 

familiarizing each other with our 

different techniques,” said Lance 

Cpl. Marshall C. Kerby, a mortarman 

with Battalion Landing Team, 2nd 

Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 31st 

MEU, III MEF. “The language barrier 

is the biggest challenge we had to 

overcome.” 

Kerby went on to say that, while 

it was challenging, it was fun to get 

to interact with the Cambodian service 

members and share ideas and 

experiences. 

The 31st MEU visited and participated 

in bilateral training as part of 

the U.S. Pacific Command’s Theater

the Kingdom of Cambodia. 

The program provides a unique

level to ensure that we continue 

to foster and develop cooperation 

between our two nations. 

While the Cambodians were 

learning about U.S. Marine Corps 

weapons and tactics, the Marines 

and sailors were learning new 

things too. 

“For pretty much all the Marines, 

this is their first time here,” said 

Staff Sgt. Daniel B. Linden, a mortar 

section leader with BLT 2/5. “We 

are just getting to know each other’s 

cultures, and this allows us to have a 

better understanding of what we can 

each bring to the table in terms of 

training.” 

Huey went on to say that “We’ve 

built upon the foundation laid by 

earlier bilateral missions. Because of 

this, Cambodia and the U.S. will continue 

to foster mutual friendship.” 

As the training came to a close, the 

Marines of Company G, BLT 2/5, felt 

they had accomplished their mission 

and everyone learned some valuable 

skills. “Even with the language 

barrier I think we did really well,” 

said Kerby. “Everyone seemed to gain 

something from the experience.”

by volunteering to clean up a local 

school after a snowstorm left tree branches 

scattered on the ground in Pohang, ROK, 

Feb. 25. 

The Marines and sailors cleaned up the 

garden of St. Paul Kindergarten by clearing 

the trees and branches that fell during 

a snowstorm that blanketed the area with 

more than two feet of snow last month. The 

storm was one of the largest in ROK history. 

“This is a great opportunity to not only 

help each other, but to also help the community,” 

said Seaman Scotti Hargrove, a corpsman 

with Marine Wing Support Squadron 

171, Marine Wing Support Group 17, 1st 

MAW. 

The Marines and sailors picked up fallen 

branches, cut down hanging limbs and 

piled large logs together to clean the garden 

and make it a safer place for the children

were released to go home and the Marines and

the teachers and director of the school came 

out to thank them personally for cleaning 

the garden and offered them green tea as 

well as a ride back to Camp Mujuk on one of 

the school’s buses. 

“The director of the school displayed her 

deepest thanks and appreciation for the 

Marines coming and helping out,” said Im. 

“We know how the Marines like to make 

good relations and a good image with the 

community by volunteering themselves and 

their time.”

Earthquake preparation recommended year-round

Unlike typhoons, earthquakes aren’t tracked for days 

before striking. Earthquakes can happen at any given 

time of the day, striking suddenly and in some cases, 

violently. 

Here on Okinawa, earthquakes happen almost every day due 

to the island’s location in the Pacific Ring of Fire, according to 

Ted Danecki, meteorological technician with 18th Operation 

Support Weather, 18th Operational Support Squadron, 18th Operations 

Group, 18th Wing on Kadena. Because of this, preparation 

is one of the most important things service members and 

their families can do. 

“There are a large number of tectonic plates in the Okinawa 

area and when they slightly shift on to one another, this is what 

causes an earthquake,” said Danecki. “Sometimes they are 

small and can’t be felt, however, large ones can happen as well.” 

Mike Lacey, the regional emergency manager and director 

of Marine Corps Bases Japan Emergency Operations Center, 

stresses three key tips that can help families prepare before an 

earthquake ever strikes. 

Stay informed: 

Understanding the environment you live in is critical when it 

comes to natural disasters. 

“On Okinawa, we have a higher probability of earthquakes, 

tsunamis and typhoons,” Lacey explained. “The probability of 

one or all of these occurring is much greater than other places 

service members may be assigned. By understanding this, 

families can formulate a plan that can help keep them better 

prepared in the event of a natural disaster.” 

Have a plan: 

Emergency contact information, a pre-planned rally point 

and a disaster kit are just a few important things that should be 

taken into consideration when formulating the family’s emergency 

plan. 

Communicate the plan: 

Since earthquakes can occur at any time, it is important for every 

member of the family to know the plan of action, said Lacey. 

Lacey suggests delegating a stateside family member as a 

point of contact in case of any emergency. This way, family 

members have a single point of contact in the U.S., instead of 

everyone attempting to call overseas. 

Every member of the service member’s family should have a 

copy of the emergency plan, emergency contact numbers and 

the stateside point of contact. 

By communicating the plan, families can ensure that each 

member will know who to contact and where they should meet 

in the event of an earthquake.

Colored disks sliced through the air 

as six teams competed in the Camp 

Courtney Ultimate Frisbee Tournament 

March 5. 

The tournament, hosted by Marine 

Corps Community Services Okinawa, was 

conducted in a double-elimination style, 

with teams competing until they lost 

twice. 

The teams competing for the championship 

title were: Ultimate Frisbee Gods, Ultimate 

Frisbee Okinawa, T’Da Sinca, Orca 

Dragons, The Other Guys and Tango Delta, 

and were compiled of service members, 

family members, Okinawans and Status of 

Forces Agreement personnel. 

After a long day of tough matches and 

landslide victories, UFO faced off against 

T’Da Sinca in the championship game, 

barely holding the lead following the first 

half with a score of 8-7. 

“We came into the second half confident 

that we were on the verge of putting all the 

pieces together,” said Shawn Green, a player 

with UFO. “We talked about a change in 

defensive strategy and taking our time on 

offense.” 

Each team consisted of seven players 

and each match ended when one team 

reached 15 goals or the one-hour time limit 

expired. 

UFO took control of the second half and 

won the game with a score of 14-8. 

UFO won the tournament undefeated, 

despite that they only had three on the 

bench compared to T’Da Sinca’s seven. 

UFO has been together for five years and 

consists of Department of Defense teachers, 

service members and SOFA personnel. Together, 

they have dominated all six tournaments 

in which they have participated.

we were able to capitalize on turnovers,” 

added Green. “We also did an excellent job 

of maintaining possession when we had 

the disc. It was extremely satisfying to win 

the tournament, especially because of the 

manner in which we did it.” 

Graham Hill, a player with T’Da Sinca 

and a previous player for UFO participated 

alongside local ultimate frisbee players and 

has participated in nine tournaments since 

he joined the team more than a year ago. 

T’Da Sinca is an all-Okinawan team with 

the exception of Hill. 

“The game is fun and exciting, and the 

service members handled themselves very 

well,” said Hill. “The Okinawan players 

fun 

love to come out and play with the American 

teams.” 

According to Taylor, ultimate frisbee is a 

valuable tool for both physical fitness and 

socializing with those who share a love of 

the game. 

“One of the things I like best about playing 

is the spirit that is out on the field,” 

commented Kevin Taylor, a player with 

UFO. “There are fine athletes and marvelous 

people to befriend. It’s energizing, and 

I love being a part of it.”
