feATureS of ALI In LAb AnImALS
The ATS has released a report that appears in the May 1, 2011, issue of the American
Journal of Respiratory Cell and Molecular Biology, which identifies the primary features
of acute lung injury (ALI) in animals.
The report summarizes the recommendations of the ATS
Acute Lung Injury in Animals Study Group, and although
it falls short of offering a consensus definition of ALI in
animals, it is a critical first step toward that goal, according
to Gustavo Matute-Bello, MD, associate professor of
medicine at University of Washington’s Center for Lung
Biology and co-chair of the study group.
“The original goal of the committee was to draft a
consensus definition of acute lung injury in animals,” Dr.
Matute-Bello said. “However, it soon became obvious that
this issue is so controversial that we would be unable to
reach a consensus; therefore, we opted to identify the main
features of acute lung injury in animals. Our hope is that
this will be the first step toward a definition.”
An accepted definition of lung injury in animal
models would have important clinical implications and
would enable study results to be compared in a meaningful
way, Dr. Matute-Bello said.
“There is no consensus in the scientific community
as to what exactly constitutes ALI in an animal, in part
because there is no single marker or parameter that
has sufficient sensitivity and specificity to identify the
occurrence of all forms and severities of ALI,” he said. “As
a result, many authors define it differently, and research
conclusions such as ‘drug A attenuated lung injury in
mice’ are very difficult to interpret. Furthermore, data
cannot be compared between studies. We believe that these
difficulties have impaired the translation of experimental
studies into improvements in bedside care. Our work
was an attempt to initiate an effort toward bringing some
agreement as to what is experimental lung injury.”
In humans, the definition of ALI is based on the
following well-defined set of clinical parameters developed
by the American European Consensus Conference: acute
onset, radiological evidence of diffuse bilateral pulmonary
infiltrates, a ratio of the partial pressure of arterial oxygen
to the fraction of inspired oxygen (PaO 2 /FIO 2 ) of less
than 300, and no clinical evidence for elevated pulmonary
arterial pressure.
However, these criteria cannot be directly translated
to experimental animals. Although arterial blood gases,
chest radiographs, cardiac echocardiography and even
catheterization can be performed in small experimental
animals, the equipment required for these measurements is
available only in a few laboratories and the measurements
may be incompatible with the design of many experimental
systems. These factors make it impractical to apply the
American European Consensus Conference criteria to
animal studies, particularly those of small animals, Dr.
Matute-Bello said.
This report examines the main features of human
ALI that are being modeled in animals, describes the
methodology used to identify the defining features of
lung injury in animals, discusses common methods of
measuring lung injury, critically assesses standard models
of lung injury and discusses the limitations of this
approach, Dr. Matute-Bello added.
“Perhaps the most significant issue addressed in this
report is the recommendation that a multidimensional
approach be used to identify acute lung injury, by taking
into account multiple domains, such as histological
evidence of tissue injury, alteration of the alveolar capillary
barrier, an inflammatory response, and some evidence of
physiological dysfunction,” said he explained. The full
report can be viewed online at http://ajrcmb.atsjournals.
dean E. Schraufnagel, Md
a m e r i c a n t h o r a c i c s o c i e t y • http://www.thoracic.org
This will be my last president’s report, as we get ready for the ATS International Conference and a changing of ATS
officers. Dr. Nicholas Hill will become president at the Denver meeting. He is a great leader who will guide the ATS
well. For me, the year has gone by quickly. I have been amazed at how many good things the ATS is doing and have
really appreciated the opportunity to serve in a leadership position. I thank the wonderful members, staff and nonmember
partners who carry out ATS activities and have been so helpful to me. Next year, as immediate-past president,
I will continue working on a number of projects for our members.
Much of my work this year entailed working on policies, looking for opportunities for projects, papers or
our members, and interacting with other societies to improve, or at times maintain, the lives of our patients and
professionals. Advocacy is a significant part what the ATS does; this year, our government relations office responded to
the threats of changes in healthcare, funding of research and protection of the environment. Much of this work is done
by our hard-working committees, to which we owe our gratitude.
I am looking forward to the 2011 ATS International Conference. In addition to the educational programs, the
assemblies and most committees will meet to wrap up the work they have done over the past year and prepare for the
next. The Council of Chapter Representatives will meet to discuss the challenges of running chapters and how they
contribute to the ATS as a whole. This is a good time to become involved if you wish. It can be very rewarding to
work on projects that will advance respiratory health. Involvement also offers an opportunity to meet and work with
colleagues from different settings and to help or be helped by someone. In the process, you will get to know your fellow
members better, which in itself is rewarding.
Again, thanks for choosing me to be your president. I look forward to working with the ATS for many years
to come.
president’s symposium to address
global HealtH leadersHip
The ATS 2011 President’s Symposium will focus on developing global
health leadership, an area of increasing importance as global trade and
the ease of travel have broken down national boundaries with respect to
respiratory diseases, critical illnesses and sleep disorders. The symposium
will take place on Monday, May 16, from 8:15 to 10:45 a.m., in the Korbel
Ballroom 2A-3A on the lower level of the Colorado Convention Center.
“This symposium will focus on leadership in world health: how to be a leader, how to find a leader and how to
develop a leader,” said ATS President Dean E. Schraufnagel, MD, who will co-chair the program with ATS President-
Elect Nicholas S. Hill, MD.
Leaders from the National Institutes of Health, World Bank and World Health Organization’s Stop TB
Partnership will discuss the definition, nature and impact of leadership. They will also talk about how to deal with
difficult situations in various international settings, as well as suggest ways for individuals to become more involved
and effective in the international projects in which they are involved.
“Almost half of attendees who attend the ATS International Conference come from outside the United States and
many North American attendees are involved in international activities,” Dr. Schraufnagel explained. “Many participants
are or aspire to be international global health leaders and are involved in developing and training future leaders.”
During the program, Lucica Ditiu, MD, executive secretary of the WHO Stop TB Partnership, will discuss her
efforts to treat TB in the Balkans. “If we think we have difficulties getting people to work together, we need to listen
to Dr. Ditiu tell how she tried to develop a team approach to treating tuberculosis in the Balkans during their civil
war,” Dr. Schraufnagel said.
The session will also educate attendees about international organizations, how they view leadership, and how they
select and train leaders. “Effective leadership makes all the difference,” Dr. Schraufnagel continued. (continued on page 16)
On Saturday, May 14,
the Society’s Public
Advisory Roundtable
(PAR) will host will
host its fifth annual
“Breathing Better with
the ATS” forum, at
which attendees will
have the opportunity
to network with lung
disease patients, as well
as with clinicians and
researchers who specialize in the fields of pulmonary,
critical care and sleep medicine. The forum, which will
focus on patient empowerment, will take place from 1 to
4 p.m. at the Sheraton Denver Downtown Hotel. The
event is open to patients and their families, representatives
of public interest organizations, members of the media and
the general public.
This is the second year that the “Breathing Better
with the ATS” program will feature an additional segment
called “Meet-the-Experts.”
“Prior to the forum’s main talks commence in
the afternoon, patients will have the opportunity to
personally meet leading researchers and clinicians who
diagnose and treat a wide range of lung diseases, critical
illnesses and sleep disorders,” said Teresa Barnes, who is
chair of ATS PAR and vice president for patient outreach
and advocacy at the Coalition for Pulmonary Fibrosis.
“Patients are also encouraged to talk with one another
and share their experiences with lung disease.”
Some of the prominent ATS members who have
volunteered to meet patients at this event include:
Sleep apnea: Michael Coppola, MD
At the “Breathing Better” forum, which begins at
1 p.m., five panelists will discuss ways in which patients
can become more empowered and take control of their
health.
Stephen Rennard, MD, of the University of Nebraska
Medical Center, will discuss new treatments on the horizon
from a host of lung diseases. “New therapies will include
better versions of what is already available, as well as new
treatments that will address problems that have not been
addressed before,” said Dr. Rennard, who is an expert on
COPD. “The COPD patient, for example, should hope
for a true cure that will restore lost function. Therapy will
become much more personalized, so that patients can
receive treatment that is tailored for their specific needs
and sensitivities.”
Jill Ohar, MD, of Wake Forest University Baptist
Medical Center, will speak about women and lung disease.
“While women are often regarded as the hysterical sex
by healthcare providers, there are several anatomic and
physiologic reasons why woman are affected by lung
diseases differently than men,” she noted. “Among these
reasons are size and differing growth, hormonal and
aging patterns.”
Other panelists include Keene Jorgensen, a COPD
patient-advocate for the Colorado Society for Respiratory
Care; Bart Celli, MD, of Brigham and Women’s Hospital,
who will talk about the prevalence of respiratory diseases
in the U.S. and around the world; and Gail Weinmann,
MD, of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute,
who will discuss the need for more lung disease research.
“Research supported by the NHLBI and others today is
laying the groundwork for better treatments tomorrow,
just as today’s treatments are heavily based upon past
research,” Dr. Weinmann said.
The talks will be followed by a question-and-answer
session and a reception with refreshments.
dEbRA E. WEESE-MAyER IS REvolutIoNIzINg
PEdIatRIc RESPIRatoRy MEdIcINE
With two older physician brothers, a dentist father, two uncles
and a grandfather in pharmacy, and a highly motivating mother,
it might seem like becoming a physician would have been an
obvious choice. But according to Debra E. Weese-Mayer, MD,
who as a teen aspired to be a judge, it was her grandmother who
had the greatest influence on her decision to become a doctor.
“In high school, my maternal grandmother underwent
two above-knee amputations for suboptimally-managed type
2 diabetes,” recalled Dr. Weese-Mayer, who is medical director
of the Children’s Memorial Hospital’s Center for Autonomic
Medicine in Pediatrics (CAMP) in Chicago. “Seeing her
suffering made it apparent that I needed to pursue a profession
in which I would be able to help people who truly needed
help. Ultimately, this led to my love of pediatrics. There is no
more pure need than that of a child—someone who has done
nothing that brought about her/his illness.”
In 1989, Dr. Weese-Mayer’s dedication to pediatric
patients led her to a position with Rush University Medical
Center (RUMC), where she and colleagues developed the
center for disorders of respiratory control and the sudden
infant death syndrome (SIDS) research program.
“RUMC built our animal and clinical laboratories, and
provided years of research support with excellent internal and
external collaboration,” said Dr. Weese-Mayer, who is also
professor of pediatrics at Northwestern University’s Feinberg
School of Medicine. “During 18-plus years at RUMC, we
were very successful in growing our program and obtaining
extramural funding. But eventually, we longed to transition
to our next level of inquiry: developing the first center for
autonomic medicine in pediatrics.”
That opportunity came in 2008, when Dr. Weese-Mayer
and her team returned to CMH to found the CAMP program.
“The vision of the center had been brewing since 1999,
when I woke up in the middle of the night on a family
vacation in Madrid and realized that ‘it all made sense,’”
Dr. Weese-Mayer recalled. “For the first time, I could
envision the inter-relationship between congenital central
hypoventilation syndrome (CCHS) and SIDS and a growing
list of other diseases that fell within the rubric of what we
now call respiratory and autonomic disorders of infancy,
childhood and adulthood (RADICA).”
“By 2001, we realized it was time to build an international
center specifically dedicated to autonomic medicine in
pediatrics,” she continued. “At that time, the concept of a
center that was wholly cross-silo was so outside the box that
there were no borders visible. But as colleagues embraced the
concept, our momentum grew. Gratefully, the leadership at
CMH appreciated the vision and understood the revolutionary
concept that had never been developed in pediatrics. So in
early 2008, we moved to CMH to build the first CAMP. As an
aside, though the program’s focus is respiratory and autonomic
medicine, the acronym “CRAMP” was not nearly so catchy!”
Dr. Weese-Mayer said the goal of CAMP is to provide
an integrated program that looks at the “whole child,”
employing an array of tests, including a battery of child-
friendly, non-invasive autonomic exams to determine the
severity of involvement of all organ systems served by the
autonomic nervous system (ANS).
“Taken together, CAMP provides objective assessment of
all systems affected by the ANS, ascertains how to optimize the
child’s well-being and neurocognitive outcome, and provides
measures for after-discharge management,” she explained.
“Our team works with the child’s local physicians, many of
whom are experts in other pediatric disciplines, to provide a
cohesive plan for care. Families that have come to CAMP leave
with furthered knowledge about their child and her/his needs.”
In 2005, Dr. Weese-Mayer received the March of
Dimes Jonas Salk Health Leadership Award for her research.
More recently, she and her colleagues obtained a patent for
a diagnostic PHOX2B genetic test that screens for CCHS,
available exclusively at RUMC; then they donated the patent to
The Chicago Community Trust Foundation to further CCHS
research. Dr. Weese-Mayer has built an extraordinary team
and network of collaborators who collectively are embarking
on advanced studies focused on SIDS, stillbirth, rapid-onset
obesity with hypothalamic dysfunction, hypoventilation,
and autonomic dysregulation (ROHHAD), CCHS, Rett
syndrome and familial dysautonomia. “We firmly believe that
through study of these rare diseases we will develop a clearer
understanding of the basic underpinnings of the ANS—with
applicability to health and disease.”
Dr. Weese-Mayer joined the ATS in 1985, received
initial funding from ALA/ATS, and served as chair of both
the Assembly on Pediatrics Nominating Committee and
the writing committee charged with developing the ATS
statement on CCHS in 1999 and again in 2010.
“Those two statements have served families and
physicians of children with CCHS to seek and receive optimal
care,” she said. “Now, as a member of the ATS Foundation
Board of Trustees, it is a privilege to ensure that the next
generation is adequately supported so that they, too, can
become leaders based on their research foothold at the ATS.”
When not immersed in her work, Dr. Weese-Mayer enjoys
traveling with her “remarkable” husband Robert N. Mayer, PhD,
who is president of the Hulda B. and Maurice L. Rothschild
Foundation, and, when possible, their “awesome” children:
Jennifer, 29, a large animal veterinarian; Jaimie, 27, a director/
producer; Jonathan, 24, a computer science/law school graduate
student; and Hap, 31, an investment research analyst.
NEWS
The ATS has published
a new report on
idiopathic pneumonia
syndrome (IPS) which
offers a comprehensive
review of both
preclinical and clinical
findings that may help
identify the causes of
IPS. The report was
prepared by an ad hoc
subcommittee of the
ATS Assembly on Respiratory Cell and Molecular Biology
and appears in the May 1, 2011, issue of the American
Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.
The report is designed to impact clinical and
basic researchers who study non-infectious post-
HSCT pulmonary complications, as well as clinicians
who take care of patients with such complications,
according to Angela Panoskaltsis-Mortari, PhD, associate
professor of pediatrics and medicine at the University of
Minnesota’s Masonic Cancer Center, who chaired the ATS
subcommittee.
“Acute lung dysfunction of non-infectious
etiology, known as idiopathic pneumonia syndrome, is
a severe complication following hematopoietic stem cell
transplantation (HSCT),” Dr. Panoskaltsis-Mortari said.
“Several mouse models have been recently developed to
determine the underlying causes of IPS. This report offers
the first compilation of those mouse model studies aimed
at understanding IPS.”
“The goal was to review and consolidate the literature
to present a consensus view of how the various forms
of the disease can be categorized; how the various
mouse models that have been developed have helped to
inform the pathways that may be operative in the human
disease; the current understanding of IPS as a process
involving both adaptive and innate immune responses;
and what future directions look promising and/or should
be pursued,” she said.
The report matches mouse models for specific
subtypes of human IPS disease based on histologic
patterns, she added.
In addition, Dr. Panoskaltsis-Mortari said the report
includes an updated definition of IPS that will be useful
to clinicians, and also recommends that IPS be classified
into specific entities, which may help determine which
patients will respond best to new therapeutic agents as
they become available.
“We expect that the statement will also help inform
researchers in the field as they devise the best approaches
to pursue in the study of causes and treatments of IPS and
which models to use,” she said.
The report supports a shift away from the current
paradigm, in which non-infectious lung injury after HSCT
is viewed simply as an idiopathic clinical syndrome and
toward a process in which the lung is the target of a
complex cytotoxic and immune-mediated attack.
“Significant research efforts have resulted in a
paradigm shift away from identifying non-infectious lung
injury after HSCT solely as an idiopathic clinical syndrome
and toward understanding IPS as a process involving
aspects of both the adaptive and the innate immune
response,” she noted. “Experimental models of IPS that
mimic the various patterns of lung injury observed after
HSCT have identified that both soluble and cellular
inflammatory mediators contribute to the inflammation
engendered during the development of IPS.
“To date, 10 pre-clinical murine models of the
IPS spectrum have been established based on models
used to study graft-versus host disease (GVHD),”
Dr. Panoskaltsis-Mortari added. “This, as well as the
demonstrated T-cell dependency of IPS development
in these models, supports the concept that the lung is
a target of immune-mediated attack after HSCT. The
SPOTLIGHT ON ATS COMMITTEES
International Conference Committee
marc moss, md, chair of the ATS International Conference Committee, talks about what he and his members are doing to improve the ATS International Conference
experience for attendees, whether they work in academia, private practice or industry.
Q. What is your committee’s charge?
A. The International Conference Committee is
responsible for planning, coordinating and implementing
the scientific and educational sessions, and other special
sessions of the ATS International Conference. This
responsibility includes securing, reviewing and selecting
papers for the scientific sessions, coordinating sessions
devoted to continuing medical education and supervising
the conduct and content of collaboratively sponsored
programs. Our committee evaluates the quality of each
year’s International Conference and proposes strategies to
improve the conference.
Q. Would you say your committee’s focus has
changed in the last several years?
A. We have been looking to identify novel methods to
improve the conference experience for the attendees. As
a result, it has become much more time consuming and
essentially a year-round job.
Q. In what ways has the International Conference
changed since you’ve been chair?
A. We have a very cohesive committee, and all of
our members deserve a lot of credit for the time and
effort they dedicate to planning the meeting. As a
group, we have initiated some new opportunities for
attendees, including the submission of case reports
and late-breaking abstracts. To improve scientific
interaction among investigators presenting their
original research at ATS 2010, we also increased the
number of facilitators at thematic poster sessions.
For the first time, there was one facilitator for every
eight to 10 posters at the International Conference.
In addition, faculty members were assigned to
specific posters, rather than just being assigned to a
large session with many posters. We also increased
the number of facilitators and decreased the number
of abstracts in each poster discussion session. Both
of these changes allowed facilitators the time to
&
lAUnchED
interact meaningfully with each presenter. Finally,
while it was difficult, we decreased the number
of abstract categories to facilitate the abstract
submission process.
Q. What do you see as areas that need improvement
over the next several years and what projects are in
the works?
A. The committee’s continuing goal is to work with
the members and other pulmonary experts to offer
a conference program that will address the needs of
our constituency. With the help and support of the
Society’s Education Committee, we will be instituting
a core curriculum for the International Conference
and all other ATS educational programs. This will be
a challenging initiative, but one that is vital for the
continued success of the meeting.
Q. As a pulmonologist and critical care specialist
who chairs the committee, what perspective do you
bring to the table?
A. I think I understand the balances that are required to
plan such a large meeting. The meeting needs to appeal
to a diverse group of individuals. Therefore, we must
balance the needs of clinicians and basic researchers;
pulmonary, critical care and sleep physicians; nurses and
other allied healthcare professionals.
Q. Is the make-up of your committee representative
of the Society’s membership at large or does it
represent a “subset” of ATS members?
A. With two elected representatives from each of the
ATS’s 13 assemblies and several at large positions, our
committee represents the Society’s diverse membership.
Q. Do you see many opportunities for collaboration
with other ATS committees?
A. Our committee has collaborated extensively with
many of the ATS committees. For example, we are
• Pharmaxis has announced the commercial launch of ARIDOL ® (mannitol inhalation
NEWS
ats ‘Hill day’: WHen Congress maKes Key
deCisions, ats is tHere
In late March, ATS members from across the United
States arrived on Capitol Hill to advocate on behalf of
patients with respiratory, critical care and sleep disorders,
as well as clinicians, researchers and allied healthcare
professionals who work in these fields. Although the
ATS is engaged in a constant dialogue with Congress
and the Obama Administration about a wide range
of regulatory and funding issues, the ATS message to
lawmakers on “Hill Day” was limited to four particularly
timely concerns: the need to sustain biomedical research
investments through the National Institutes of Health
(NIH) and the VA Research Program budgets, protecting
the Clean Air Act and taking action on COPD, which is
the third-leading cause of death in the U.S.
“With Congress in the midst of a heated discussion
about federal spending, the Society’s message about
preserving the NIH budget was both timely and
forceful,” said ATS President Dean E. Schraufnagel,
MD, who attended the advocacy event. “The House
of Representatives has already passed legislation that
would cut $1 billion from the NIH budget. Such a
cut would be devastating to science and, ultimately, to
patients, who are in need of better treatments and cures
for respiratory diseases.”
Prior to visiting a number of congressional offices,
James Kiley, PhD, director of the Division of Lung
Diseases at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute,
gave ATS members an update on the advances the
institute has made in lung disease research. ATS “Hill
Day” participants sent a clear message to Congress about
the importance of research to public health and, given the
high cost of healthcare, the country’s economic well being.
Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI)
with ATS member Linda Nici, MD,
ATS members Jim Patterson, MD,
J. Randall Curtis, MD, MPH,
Lynne Reinke, PhD, and James
Beck, MD.
ATS members also educated members of Congress
about the important biomedical research being
conducted with funding from the VA Research program.
In particular, the Society’s advocates urged Congress to
provide the resources necessary for the VA to upgrade
and improve its aging laboratory infrastructure.
“In addition to debating funding priorities,
Congress is also considering whether it should roll back
parts of the Clean Air Act,” Dr. Schraufnagel explained.
“Again, the House has already passed legislation that
would reduce the Environmental Protection Agency’s
authority to improve our nation’s air quality. ATS
members reminded lawmakers that the Clean Air
Act is an economic and public health success story.
In addition to preventing 160,000 premature deaths,
86,000 emergency room visits, 130,000 heart attacks
and 1.7 million asthma exacerbations each year, the
Clean Air Act also reduces healthcare costs.”
ATS members presented legislators with a recent
study that showed $30 in economic savings—mostly
from reduced healthcare expenditures—for every $1
spent on pollution control. Armed with this important
information, the Society’s members urged Congress to
reject any amendments to remove or delay the EPA’s
authority under the Clean Air Act.
Members also shared with senators and
representatives important facts about COPD, which is
affecting more Americans each year. They explained
why it is vital that the federal government pay attention
to this often overlooked disease and to support the
creation of a national NHLBI action plan respond to
the growing COPD epidemic.
moRe on Ats ‘Hill dAy’
At “Hill Day” 2011, ATS members from 17 states traveled
to Capitol Hill to talk with legislators and their staffs
about issues important to the ATS agenda (for more
information, please see the story to the left). Many of the states
represented by ATS advocates are home to thoracic society
chapters, including: Arizona, Colorado, Hawaii, Kentucky,
Michigan, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island and
Washington. This year’s “Hill Day” participants weigh in
on what they thought of the experience below.
“This was the fourth time I’ve participated in this
event and it was—once again—an exciting and
productive day. This year, our focus highlighted
the following incredibly important topics: increased
research funding for the NIH and VA, supporting
the EPA’s authority to ensure clean air, and the
development of a national COPD plan. It felt to me
like our presence on the Hill had an impact.”
–ATS Immediate-Past President J. Randall
Curtis, MD, MPH, representing Washington
“We had a good experience all around. Everyone
was receptive to us, if not fully of our messages. It
was a great learning experience, and I felt like we
were doing something worthwhile!”
–ATS PAR member Regina Vidaver, PhD,
representing Wisconsin
“‘Hill Day’ was an eye-opening experience for me—I
hadn’t done it before. Some legislators were very
receptive and supportive. Representative Price’s
staffer actually voiced our position very eloquently
and passionately before we did. Overall, it was a
very good experience and gave me some insight
into how things work.”
–ATS President-Elect Nicholas Hill, MD,
representing Massachusetts
“It was an excellent experience and extremely
well-organized by the Society’s government
relations office.”
–ATS member Barbara Phillips, MD,
representing Kentucky
“I again had a wonderful experience on the Hill this
week. I am always impressed with the reception we
receive from our representatives. It’s a delight to
spend a day with ATS colleagues from around the
country and have the opportunity to discuss issues
that we all face daily.”
raC’s va subCommittee sets tHree Key goals
The ATS has long recognized the
importance of the Department
of Veterans Affairs (VA) research
program. In particular, the
VA’s Merit Review and Career
Development Programs, along with
the VA’s affiliated private research
foundations—which permit capture
of indirect costs—have been the
source of substantial support for
ATS members.
Two years ago, the Research Advocacy Committee
(RAC) formed a VA subcommittee with the goal of
increasing ATS member participation in VA research
programs. RAC Chair Landon King, MD, who is the
David Marine Professor of Medicine at Johns Hopkins,
appointed James Brown, MD, who is professor of clinical
medicine at the University of California, San Francisco,
to initiate the effort. Through meetings at the last two
International Conferences, the subcommittee defined
three key advocacy goals:
(1) Improve VA research laboratory infrastructure:
support is needed to upgrade and/or replace
existing VA research laboratories;
(2) Initiate respiratory disease-directed requests
for VA research proposals: veterans would
benefit from research targeted to respiratory
disorders which are prevalent among VA
patients; and
(3) Create accessible databases of funded projects:
if available, these would leverage strengths of the
VA portfolio and increase collaborative research
within the VA, as well as with investigators
outside of the VA.
ATS members elected Thomas
Ferkol, MD, ATS Secretary-
Treasurer for the 2011 to 2012
term. He will be installed in
this position at ATS 2011 on
Tuesday, May 17, during the
ATS Membership Meeting. Dr.
Ferkol is professor of pediatrics,
cell biology, and physiology and
director of the multidisciplinary Division of Pediatric
Allergy, Immunology, and Pulmonary Medicine at the
Washington University School of Medicine. After earning
his medical degree from the Ohio State University College
of Medicine, he completed residency training at the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He received
his fellowship training in pediatric pulmonology at Case
Western Reserve University and subsequently joined their
pediatric faculty. He moved to Washington University
in 2000, where he has directed the comprehensive Cystic
Fibrosis Center for the past decade.
With guidance from Gary Ewart,
senior director of ATS government
relations, and Nuala Moore, senior
ATS legislative representative, several
steps have been taken to advance
these goals. In February, members
of the RAC visited Capitol Hill
and requested that the report from
an internal audit of VA research
infrastructure, commissioned by
Congress in 2006, be completed and released.
“With assistance of Steven Dubinett from UCLA,
who is a member of the ATS’s Section on Thoracic
Oncology, a topic for a potential VA request for proposals
was identified relating to the four-fold increased risk
of lung cancer among patients with COPD,” said Dr.
Brown. “The ATS invited a VA research program leader,
Dr. Ronald Przygodzki, to attend the 2010 International
Conference, and Steve Dubinett included Dr. Przygodzki
as a co-chair of a symposium that explored the links
between the two diseases. At a subsequent meeting of the
VA subcommittee, we discussed each of the three advocacy
goals with Dr. Przygodzki.”
For 10 years, the ATS’s government relations office
has worked to raise Congressional awareness of the VA
research program’s value, and the efforts of Dr. Brown
and the VA subcommittee have magnified the
importance of this effort. To help advance these goals
and develop new ones, Drs. King and Brown invite all
ATS members to attend the VA Subcommittee meeting
on Sunday, May 15, from noon to 1:30 p.m. during the
2011 International Conference. The meeting will take
place in Room 204 on street level of the Colorado
Convention Center.
