En Mamaroneck High School, los
consejeros escolares están inmersos
en el proceso de inscripción – conociendo
a estudiantes nuevos y a sus padres,
orientándolos a la escuela, programándolos
para clases y guiándolos por la transición.
Este otoño se les ha dado la bienvenida
a más de sesenta estudiantes que transfirieron
a Mamaroneck. Algunos son de
otros país – Canadá, Inglaterra, Francia,
Alemania, Grecia, Guatemala, Italia, España;
otros de diferentes estados – California,
Florida, Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts,
Oklahoma, Pennsylvania; y
otros de escuelas en esta área. Esta combinación
aumenta la diversidad en Mamaroneck
High School.
Para el Distrito, asegurar que los estudiantes
hagan las transiciones de un nivel
de educación al próximo de manera que les
permita ser exitosos es muy importante.
Planear para la transición del octavo grado
en la escuela media al noveno grado en
la escuela secundaria comienza el invierno

At Mamaroneck High School, the
guidance counselors are immersed
in the registration process – meeting
new students and their parents, giving them
an introduction to the school, scheduling
them for classes, and guiding them through
the transition.
This fall, Mamaroneck High School
has welcomed over 60 new transfer students.
Some are from other countries – Canada,
England, France, Germany, Greece,
Guatemala, Italy, Spain; other students are
from different states – California, Florida,
Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts, Oklahoma,
Pennsylvania; and still others are from public
and private schools in this area. This
blend enhances the diversity at Mamaroneck
High School.
For the District, ensuring that students
make transitions from one level of education
to the next in a manner that enables
them to be successful is very important.
Planning for the transition from the middle
school to the high school begins in the
winter of the eighth grade. In the fall, the
first priority of the Guidance Department
is to meet Ninth Grade students individually
and in small groups, as well as to meet
the parents and answer questions and concerns.
Parents of Ninth Grade students are
encouraged to meet with their child´s guidance
counselor. The relationship with the
counselor begins on the student’s first day
and continues through graduation.

The Chief Academic Ofcer will report directly to the President and will
sit on the President’s Cabinet. The successful candidate will develop
and implement academic policy for the county’s largest educational
institution. The VP will oversee all curriculum matters, provide
leadership to faculty, encourage teaching excellence and the use of
technology, and assure proper assessment of student learning and
compliance with regulations. This executive will work with the
community, local school districts, and four-year institutions to advance
the academic mission of the college. Requires a Master’s degree and
5 years administrative experience, including 3 years in college
administration. Doctorate strongly preferred.

Se les anima a los padres a llamar al
Departamento de Consejería para reunirse
con el consejero de su hijo(a). La relación
con el consejero durará los cuatro años de
la escuela secundaria.
Otra prioridad en esta época del año es
ayudarles a los estudiantes del grado doce
con el proceso de aplicar a las universidades.
Realmente este proceso comienza el
otoño del grado once con una sesión de
información. El 19 de septiembre, habrá reunión
para padres de estudiantes del grado
doce con los consejeros para hablar acerca
de la universidad. Al día siguiente, los consejeros
se reunirán con todos los estudiantes
a la hora del almuerzo.
Para padres latinos, se programan actividades
especiales. En la Noche de regreso
a la escuela, hay una pre-reunión en
que los padres latinos pueden conocer a
los administradores, igual que a personal
que habla español. Para las familias del
grado 12, hay dos reuniones por la noche
en español sobre ayuda financiera para la
universidad: un taller general en octubre y
otro taller en enero para guiar a las familias
por el proceso de solicitar FAFSA.
Este otoño hay dos consejeros nuevos reemplazando
a consejeros quienes se jubilaron.
La escuela les dio la bienvenida a Rob
Schwartz y Julián Vélez. Todos los consejeros
trabajan con un grupo variado de estudiantes
de cada grado. El señor Vélez, quien
es bilingüe, con el señor Cuddy, quien también
es bilingüe, será un recurso importante
para ayudar a las familias de habla hispana.
El señor Vélez dice que es orgulloso de poder
hablar español y anima a sus asesorados
a mantener su español.

Guidance in action at
Mamaroneck High School
Another priority at this time of the year
is to assist seniors with the college application
process. This process actually begins in
the fall of junior year with an information
session. On September 19, there will be a
meeting for parents of seniors and the guidance
counselors to speak about college. On
the following day, guidance counselors will
meet with all seniors at lunch.
For Latino parents, the Guidance Department
schedules special activities. At
Back-to-School Night, there is a pre-meeting
at which Latino parents can meet the
high school administration as well as staff
who speak Spanish. For families of seniors,
there are two evening meetings in Spanish
about financial aid for college: a general
workshop in October and a second workshop
in January to guide families through the
process of applying for FAFSA.
This fall the High School has two new
guidance counselors to replace two counselors
who retired in June. The school welcomed
new guidance counselors, Rob Schwartz
and Julian Velez. All of the counselors work
with a cross section of students at each grade
level. Mr. Velez, who is bilingual, along with
Mr. Cuddy, who is also bilingual, will be an
important resource in the department in assisting
Spanish-speaking families. Mr. Velez
says that he is proud of being able to speak
Spanish and encourages his Latino advisees
to keep up their Spanish.
