y formas diversas –especialmente tapetes y manteles–
other figures or letters have been added to show that it
belongs to a single creation.
The numeration of each of the samples reveals
another facet of the development of the Catalan lace
industry in the eighteenth century. The lacemakers
and the owners knew each sample, or specific motifs
and stitches, by a name: the pieces might be named
after everyday objects, or their names might refer to
events that were significant at the time. The names
that have survived today in Arenys de Mar in the
technique of ret fi are testimony to this practice:
from the famous “Sant Iscle belltower”, to “the
paw”, “the guitar” and “the boat”. However, in spite
of the short distances between the factories and the
towns, the same motif might receive completely
different names in different places. The “spirit stitch”
of the ret fi in Arenys de Mar, for example, is the
same as “the fly” in Arenys de Munt. Soon, to avoid
confusion, the owners began to substitute these
popular names with a numerical system; but the
terms were still used by the lacemakers and were
passed on to the younger generations, and some are
still in use today.
Other documents
As well as the handmade lace sample-books, researchers
in the field can find useful additional information in the
companies’ notebooks. These notebooks contain more
specific lists referring especially to the measurements,
possible combinations, and the prices of particular
pieces. The Museum of Arenys de Mar preserves one of
these notebooks belonging to Casa Castells, dating
from the early twentieth century, which contains
information on a photographic sample-book of lace
doilies. And in between the pages of one of the books
from Casa Artigas – when the firm was known as Hijos
de Rosa Muñoz – we found some typewritten sheets
that specify the combinations that could be made
between different samples to make albs with
geometrical lace, or mantillas with guipure and blonde
lace. As well as the widths of each piece, the notes
specify the price of the final product (in all likelihood
before it was mounted), in pesetas. This notebook
bears witness to the high prices that lace could
command, and also shows us that the same item could
have different uses: it could be added to a textile piece,
a garment, or a household item, or it could become a
garment in its own right.
The only sample-books at the Museum of Arenys de
Mar which display the models and also show commercial
details belong to Casa Castells. These are unusual
specimens because, unlike the others, they are made
up of square or rectangular fragments of sky blue tulle.
