ÁRBOL DE JUPITER (¿y quien nos explica lo de “júpiter”?) LAGERSTROEMIA INDICA LINNEO Familia: Litráceas (Lythraceae). Lagerstroemia: dedicado a Magnus von Lagerström (1696-1759), administrador sueco y amigo de Linneo; indica = de la India, aunque en “nuestro” caso se trata de un vegetal que oriunda en la región de China y Corea. Especie bastante ornamental y de origen asiático; hoy en día cultivada donde el clima lo permite. Arbusto o arbolillo de hasta 6 o 7 metros de altura; densamente ramificado. Corteza grisácea: ramas nuevas angulares. Follaje caduco. Hojas simples, obovadas y herbáceas, opuestas o alternas (o formando verticilios), de 3 a 7 cm de largo. Flores rosáceas o (¡ variedad !) blancas, cresporizadas y dispuestas en panículas terminales muy vistosas. Cápsulas fructíferas pequeñas (6-8 mm), secas y globosas, y que contienen varias semillas aladas. Vegetal algo variable, multiplicado por semillas y brotes basales. En su región de origen aprovechada por sus varias propiedades medicinales. Aún localmente bastante raro. Conocemos algunos ejemplares arbustivas (con flores blancas, y rosadas) en el parque del Mesón. 38
