La primavera ya casi esta aquí! Y no
Asi
es como pasamos los momentos dificiles,
Spring is almost here! And it couldn’t arrive
any sooner. Every day, I am aware of how
challenged our Hispanic businesses and
families are: looking for work, keeping up with
the bills, and taking care of our lives and our
precious children.
If ever there was a time to be strong, if ever
there was a time to hold on to each other
tighter, it is now. We hope that we have been
through the worst as we wait for President
Obama’s Stimulus Package to take root and
get our economy moving in the right direction.
In the mean time, what can we do? Stay
positive, stay strong. Tell those around you that
you love them and you’ll stand by them. This
is how we have always gotten through tough
times – TOGETHER!

Many people ask if it will affect their immigration status whether
they file taxes every year. The reality is that this is a positive
factor. It helps when applying for citizenship by showing the moral
character of the applicant. It can also be used to show proof
of continued residence in the country. Although it is a positive
factor, it will not guarantee legal permanent residency for now,
but this could change as a result of the various immigration
reforms we are currently hoping for.
Although for immigrants, the fear is that filing taxes may attract
unwanted attention to their immigrant status, according to the
IRS, their job is to collect taxes and has nothing to do with fulfilling
the immigration laws. Furthermore, information concerning
immigration status cannot be shared from one government
agency to another, (like the Immigration and Naturalization
Service,) according to the privacy clause of the IRS.
Every person that works in the US and receives money is
obligated to declare their federal income tax each year. This
obligation does not depend on one’s immigration status but
rather on one’s level of income. Filing taxes is the law, and failing
to do so can result in civil and criminal penalties.
IMMIGRANTS ALSO PAY TAXES
If the US government considers someone “taxable,” they must
file their income with the IRS. All permanent and temporary
immigrants are “taxable,” although not everyone with a nonresident
visa is considered so. In any event, filing taxes is a good
idea if you have been working for an employer that h as withheld
income tax from your paycheck, not only because it is the law, but
also because you could receive a tax refund.
If you have a non-resident visa and have been in the US for less than
183 days for the current tax year, you are considered “taxable”
and need to file the income received during that period. If you are
a taxable resident, you must file a form 1040 by April 15th.
The law requires an identification number for everyone filing taxes,
which is normally a Social Security Number. It the tax payer does
not qualify for a SSN, they can apply for a personal ID number,
(ITIN), from the IRS by using the application form W-7SP.
We know we cannot change the way in which we arrived in this
country, but we must try to obey the law. In doing so we can
minimize the number of broken laws and give good testimony to
our Hispanic race.

SPRING HAS FINALLY ARRIVED!
The long awaited sunny and warm days are finally coming, leaving
behind the insufferable winter cold that we, from warm climates cry
so much about. The term Equinox refers to when the days and nights
are of equal duration in all parts of the world. The word Equinox
comes from the Latin word aequinoctoum and means “equal night.”
The astronomical event happens around the 20 or 21 of March. We
enjoy more sunlight in the daytime, compared with the shorter days of
winter. And as everything in nature is reflected within us, it is time to
not only admire and enjoy each season of the year, but also learn to
take advantage of the opportunity that each presents. For example,
winter is a time for reflection and rest from our activities since the
weather forces us to spend more time indoors, giving the chance to
think and reflect on our lives. The leafless trees are covered in snow and
the animals take shelter and hibernate. Nature is conserving energy and
preparing for the spring renewal of life. Then, the trees begin to regain
their color and the land becomes green again, little by little. Life begins to
be active once again. To us, humans beings, it is an opportunity to renew
ourselves and begin a new cycle full of energy and productive activity.
For this reason, detoxification is so highly recommended, like beginning
new projects with optimism and renewed spirit.
And so, despite the difficulties of the present economic situation, this is
the perfect time to rid ourselves of sadness, inject our lives with revitalized
energy and continue onward and upward. Happy Spring Equinox!
SALUD/HEALTH
articulaciones, acidez, inflamación, gases, nervios, insomnio, temor,
desintoxicaron. “Amate, respétate y desintoxícate y obtendrás la
gran recompensa.” Energía, vitalidad y salud en mente, cuerpo y
espíritu. Tu cuerpo te lo agradecerá.
10 SALUD/HEALTH MIRADA MAGAZINE
By: Irma Garcia
Translated by David Lupien
Detoxification is an act of courage, love, kindness, and respect for
oneself. The rewards are extraordinary, but so are the challenges.
Understanding from the beginning exactly what is detoxification will
allow you to concentrate, and this concentration will give you the
necessary strength.
Can you identify with any of this?
Constipation, exhaustion, cholesterol, headaches, stomachaches, joint
pain, heartburn, inflammation, gas, nervousness, insomnia, fear, and lack
of mental clarity tell us that our body have too much toxin, that the
normal channels for cleansing are blocked by a buildup of toxin over a
long period of time.
Consuming foods that contain hormones, antibiotics, preservatives, and
processed foods with high levels of sugar, salt, and seasoning, don´t
merely irritate our organs, but also affect our digestion and diminish our
body´s ability to assimilate nutrients.
Detoxification is the grand cleaning of our internal organs, the liver,
kidneys, intestines, colon, and other vital organs. The blood flow, lymph
system, circulatory system, and the cleansing of sick, dead, oxidized cells
are removed as they have remained in our system for too long.
DETOX OF MIND, BODY AND SPIRIT
Detoxification works from the inside out. Eliminating these built up toxins
also allows us to eliminate unhealthy eating habits, old ways of thinking
and relating, freeing us from negative and self destructive thoughts, and
setting aside our stress, anger, hatred, resentment, and old pains.
“Out with the old, in with the new” is the battle cry of detoxification.
“Love, respect, and detoxify yourself and you will reap great rewards.”
Energy, vitality, and a healthy mind, body and spirit … your body will
thank you.
TIPS FOR DETOXIFICATION
1. Start your day with positive thoughts.
2. On an empty stomach, drink 16 ounces of warm, distilled water.
3. Breakfast: 4 – 5 ounces of fruit. It is recommended that you start
with just one kind of fruit. You may
substitute juice, preferable fresh and homemade.
4. Meals: salad without dressing, steamed vegetables or vegetable
consommé.
5. Dinner: salad or vegetable consommé.
6. Drink at eight ounces of water at least eight times a day.
7. Light exercise is very important for at least 30 minutes.
8. End your day with self-gratitude for having begun a healthy lifestyle.

Promover nuestras tradiciones y compartir nuestra Cultura
propio dinero ellas compraban trajes típicos y pagaban maestras.
BOISE FOLKLORIC CULTURAL
ORGANIZATION
We interviewed Juanita Gonzales, director of the Boise Folkloric Cultural
Organization.
What is the philosophy of the group?
To promote our traditions and share our Culture through the traditional
dances of Mexico, as well as to do everything with pleasure, joy and
enthusiasm with a good attitude and disposition.
How did the group begin?
Our group was founded in September of 1999, after having some
afternoon classes, the mothers decided to form the group called Boise
Youth Mexican Folk Dance. This year will be our 10th anniversary, we
are very proud that those who have continued; Joyce Kuiken, Lulu Keith,
and Juanita Gonzalez, formed what is now the Boise Folkloric Cultural
Organization.
How did you manage to keep up with the group?
The South Junior High School offered the use of their gymnasium in
exchange for Spanish classes, and folkloric dance for the community.
With their own money, they purchased costumes and paid teachers.
How has this experience been like?
During these almost 10 years now, we have had the pleasure of having
many students. Congratulations to those that continue, and thank you
to those who have participated for a shorter time. The important thing
is that there exists interest in conserving our culture so rich in tradition;
in this case, the folkloric dance.
What would you like to say to our community and to the
public in general?
I would like to congratulate each and every one of the mothers and
fathers of my students, thank you for supporting your children. The same
goes for all of our patrons that have helped us on different occasions a
million thanks, and an invitation to those who wish to become a part of
the group, the door is open.
For the people that are interested in joining the group, how
can they contact you?
We practice each Wednesday from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, there is
only one requisite: that you like to dance Mexican folkloric and are
older than five. For more information, call (208) 850-2570. E-mail:
COMO PROTEGER A SUS
NIÑOS EN LA EDAD DE
MYSPACE
En esta época cuando es común
que los niños sepan mas sobre la
tecnología y el Internet que saben
los sus padres, ¿sabe Ud. Cómo y dónde pasan su tiempo en
ciberespacio?
HOW TO KEEP YOUR
KIDS SAFE IN THE AGE OF
MYSPACE
In an age where it is commonplace for kids to know more about
technology and the Internet than their parents, do you know how
and where your children spend their time in cyberspace?
In a report entitled Online Victimization of Youth: Five Years Later,
researchers found that approximately one in seven youth (10 to
17-years-old) received a sexual solicitation or approach over the
Internet.
With kids using the Internet at school, with friends, and at home,
it is important for parents to be aware of what their children are
doing online, what the risks include, and what you can do to keep
them safe.
Social networking groups like MySpace, Facebook, and Friendster
can be a great forum for teenagers to express themselves and
make friends that might have common interests. However, such
groups can also be dangerous if young people get involved with
predators. Many of these websites allow users to create profiles
with contact information, pictures, and journals. Child abductors
and other criminals may use such websites to lure kids into
meeting in-person by lying about their age and interests.
Make sure to not only check on the names of the sites used by
your children, but to visit the sites and use them. Remember, if a
site allows your child to post information such as an email address,
a full name, or a street address, your child can be contacted by
anyone who sees that post online.
If your child is under 13 years of age, you can contact CARU at
THE TRADITIONAL CEREMONY OF THE FIFTEENTH BIRTHDAY
A popular tradition in the Mexican-American
community is the celebration of the fifteenth
birthday, which probably goes all the way
back to Toltec and Aztec cultures, marking the
transition from maiden to woman, and from
child to warrior.
The fifteenth birthday celebration in Mexico
is a ritual of social initiation, inspired by the
debutant balls of British nobility and the
French high society of the 19th century, in
which young people (14 to 16 years old)
attended their first presentation to society. The
celebration rites begin with a gratitude mass
and culminate in a party where the young lady
shares a special dance, usually a waltz, with
her father. At this opportunity, as a symbolic
act, the father presents his daughter to society
and officially grants her the status of a mature
woman. The event is also an opportunity to
Esmeralda Castañeda
reinforce the social and emotional ties of the
godparents, those who have agreed to assume
the role of parents should something happen
to the mother and father during the life of
the young lady. These days, in addition to the
principal godparents, others are designated
“godparents” for their help in financing the
event, such as paying for the church, hall, ring,
limousine, medal, dress, and all the other details
that go into organization such a major event,
smothering the birthday girl with affection
and helping the parents with expenses.
Since most Mexicans are catholic, a priest
is usually included in the celebration, giving
advice to the birthday girl, her parents and
godparents, relatives, and the responsibilities
they carry, and reminding them to help
preserve her purity, decency, and dignity.
In the United States there is a similar
celebration that takes place one year later,
called the Sweet Sixteen. At St. John’s
Cathedral, girls turning fifteen attend a retreat
that lasts all Sunday and Saturday on the last
weekend of March, where they learn more
about the truth of the Catholic faith and the
meaning of the fifteenth birthday celebration.
ACCEPTING SUMMER
REGISTRATIONS
Boise State University’s summer program offers opportunities to
learn something new just for fun, for career advancement or to
accelerate educational plans. Open registration is under way for a
wide variety of core, upper division, graduate and Internet-based
classes, as well as a large selection of short workshops.
Summer classes start May 18 with the first three-week session.
Five-week, eight-week, second five-week and 10-week sessions
continue through mid-August. Classes are scheduled during the
day, evening and on weekends.
Students can help fast track their education by enrolling for
summer courses or catch courses they were unable to take in the
fall and spring. Additional benefits of enrollment in the summer
program include no out-of-state fees, no credit limit and reduced
per-credit fees.
Most summer classes meet four days a week or less so students
can earn credits and still enjoy long summer weekends. This
summer’s schedule also offers a large number of online courses.
Picking up one or two classes in the summer could save a student
thousands of dollars if it helps shorten completion of his or her
degree by even a semester. Students can more easily finish their
degrees in four years by adding a summer class each year.
Currently enrolled Boise State students can register for summer
classes on BroncoWeb. Others can check their access on
BroncoWeb before reapplying for admission. For more information
ENTREPRENEUER OF THE MONTH
JUAN GUERRERO - JUANES AUTO MECHANIC
Born in Leon, Guanajuato Mexico in 1972, he came to the US in
search of the American Dream. He originally arrived in the city of
Los Angeles where went from one difficult job to the next. Luckily,
he found work in a radiator shop where he began to acquire his
knowledge of vehicles. Later, after much experience in this field,
he decided he was ready to open his own business.
Q/ Why open your own business?
A It one of my goals. Also, it was an opportunity for me because
this shop closed, so I opened my own. Of course, it is always
better to work for yourself than somebody else!
I had my own business there for about ten years, and for reasons
of fate, I came to Idaho. Actually, I came here on a trip and fell in
love with the place, so I made the great decision to relocate to
Boise, the Treasure Valley.
Q/ Was it difficult to move your business to Idaho?
A No, not really, because what is important is the person and the
knowledge he brings. In this case, I have a lot of experience in the
field of radiators, which is my strength, and at first I went to work
in another company while I got to know the area and figure out
the best opportunities to reopen my business here.
Q/ How did you realize that it was time to start your
business?
A When I felt that I was pretty settled here, and felt confident in
my ability to open the business was when I opened it, and when
I saw the need that the Hispanic community had and that they
needed answers to their problems in their own language.
Q/ What kind of relationship do you have with your
clients, or what image do they have of you?
A From both sides, it is excellent. We have really connected well,
in the first place because we speak the same language. Also, I try
give them the lowest price and the best service, and I’m very
responsible and timely with my work. I always keep in mind that
my customer’s vehicles are very important to them.
Q/ Do you have a message for the Hispanic Community?
A That we don’t get swept away by this wave of problems we are
facing currently, but keep going forward with our heads held high.
This is just a bad spell and we’ve always had these but we’re still
here. Remember that “yes, you can!”

DO YOU KNOW WHAT IS A CENSUS?
comunidades.
The census is an accurate assessment of the number and
location of the people living within a nation. Censuses are done
every 10 years and they are very important to determine the
amounts of funding communities receive.
