Planta erecta, glabra, glauccscentc. de hojas la mayoría inciso-espinosas, no pinnatipartidas; nervios blanquecinos muy destacados. Uniformidad en todas las poblaciones. Prefiere y necesita ¡a protección del matorral; no es de ribazadas (individualizada y con caracteres). subsp. hispanicus (Boiss.) n. comb. (= Carduncellus hispanicus Boiss. ; Voy Bot., tab. .108, óptima ; DC, Prodr., VII, pág. 304). Habitat: En los matorrales de tendencia pulvinular de las comunidades de la alianza de serranías andaluzas JAi-nwdulo-Genistion boissieri. En Sierra de Gádor, copiosa, en ei piso medio superior (1.800-2.000 m. s. n. m.) (Losa, Rivas, Rufino Sagredo): loco t y pie o!! Especialmente típica en la as. Convolvulo-Lavanduletum lanatae, de Gádor, asociada con otra planta crítica boisseriana, la Centaurea tenuiloba, que forma pulvínulas en las que se refugia la Carduncellus. Forma pulvinular y refugio, además de serranos, son debidos a la acción antropozoógena, tan intensa en toda ia provincia de Almería. Endemismo serrano del S.-SE. ibérico. (No comprendemos bien a Willkomm (Prodr.. II, págs. 135-36 (1865) al no tomar en consideración la estirpe de Sierra de Gádor ; en el campo y en comunidad es realmente bellísima e independiente. Boissier subió a Gádor y la apreció ; Willkomm no la visitó.) B. Vilanos aproximadamente los dos tercios dc la longitud de las flores; plantas acaules o caulescentes, monocéfalas, con la cabezuelas oblongas o aovado-cilíndricas, con las brácteas externas análogas a las hojas caulinares, las medias dentados espinosas o cocleariformes y las internas lanceolado agudas y más o menos espinoso-lacerantes.
