La erosión ha sido el gran enemigo de esas explotaciones primitivas. Tras la denudación de los suelos relictos sólo quedaron los horizontes inferiores decapitados, las costras y los litosuelos improductivos. Con -ellos vino el masivo avance de la vegetación, hasta entonces marginal, de los Onomdo-Rosmarinetea. Para toda la región mediterránea puede admitirse, al menos teóricamente, que las sucesivas etapas de sustitución del bosque primitivo si- .guen un esquema fisonómico muy parecido al siguiente. Bosque esclerofilo •-> matorral denso (espinal) -> matorral claro -> tomillar. Según la trofia y el clima, esas unidades ecológico-fisonómicas, están formadas por comunidades diversas. Los bosques esclerofilos y los matorrales densos muestran afinidades florísticas y fitosociológicas por la -clase Quercetea ilicis, mientras que los matorrales claros y los tomillares los tienen por la clase Ononido-Rosmarinetea. La diversidad florística de las etapas subseriales, es tanto mayor cuanto más cálido y árido sea el clima. Por el contrario sobre sustratos oligotrofos y en climas continentales fríos en invierno, pese a mantenerse el esquema fisonómico señalado, la flora que los forma es muy pobre. Hemos confeccionado un esquema en el que se intenta poner de manifiesto la relación y convergencia de las sucesivas etapas dinámicas, sobre sustratos ricos en bases, en el territorio de vegetación mediterráneo meridional Oleo-Cerat onion (tabla 1."). Los bosques esclerofilos que cubrirían con carácter postclimácico y residual, una buena parte del territorio mencionado, han desaparecido casi totalmente y su recuperación actual es poco menos que imposible al haberse erosionado los suelos, por ello se marcan con una interrogación los que creemos desaparecidos, o bien restan sólo como reliquias. Las etapas de matorral denso o espinal, sin llegar a cubrir hoy día una parte importante del terreno, aún pueden estudiarse en muchas zonas. Son precisamente estas etapas preclimácicas de Oleo-Ceratonion, las que hemos empleado en Andalucía y SE. peninsular en la cartografía de la vegetación potencial, para intentar delimitar los dominios o segmentos de •dominio climácicos.
