6 Why I am standing for re-election At the end of November, the Spanish Football Federation is holding elections for the post of president. The 180 member of the Football Assembly, 160 of whom are elected and 20 of whom are ex officio, which represents all of the groups which make up the Federation and which is the highest sovereign and democratic body thereof, will decide who is to be the next president of the Spanish F.A. for the 2008-2012 term of office. As I have already stated on numerous occasions, I will be standing as a candidate in those electionS. It is a decision I have taken freely after careful consideration and for a number of reasons. In 1988 I was elected for the first time by the General Assembly to preside over national football. I have to admit it was a source of great satisfaction at that time, and I feel the same way now, as I set out once again on the path which could lead me to the presidency of the Spanish F.A. A lot of time has passed since 1988. I have been re-elected on four occasions in that period and I have to say I feel enormously proud of it. In the course of those 20 years of office Spanish football has faced many, varied and major challenges, because we are expected - reasonably and fairly - to meet certain expectations. In many cases we have emerged triumphant. The 2008 European Cup was the latest example of this. Because of the way in which it was played, because of the way in which it was won, and because of the overwhelming communal joy it produced, I feel it was perhaps the greatest of the most recent successes achieved by one of our teams. But there have been many others since 1988. Many. The gold medal in the 1992 Olympic Games. The long series of successes at world and European level on the part of our youth teams, of the under-19 women’s team” and of our futsal teams. And the Maurice Burlaz trophies which are awarded to European youth football and which we have won on more occasions than anybody else. It would be a gesture of false modesty on my part to say that I do not feel I have participated in these successes. The triumphs of the Spanish national teams over the last 20 years, and those that preceded them, are naturally due fundamentally to the players who achieved them, but behind those players, with their shoulders to the wheel, there were countless other people: coaches, officials both well known and anonymous, clubs both large and small, regional associations, referees, supporters, and many others. This always has been and remains a collective endeavour: our football. Many of these people have asked me to stand for re-election and I was enormously proud to be asked because it shows their confidence in my work and in my way of doing things. It is also a sign of support for the work of all of the Spanish F.A.’s executive committees that I have chaired during that time. And it has not always been either easy or pleasant. In spite of all that, the facts have shown that the truth was on our side, a truth based on quiet, unassuming and prudent hard work. Spain’s national squads dominate the European and world league tables and function to perfection. This is the truth of what we have achieved. therefore have many reasons for standing for re-election. And I will not deny that I can I depend upon the support of many colleagues. Perhaps the most important reason is my passion for this marvellous sport which is bitter at times but where the rewards more than make up for those few bitter moments. I am standing because I love the game, because I feel strong enough to continue if the Assembly should so decide, because I believe I can contribute with my experience in the post, because I feel there is still work to be done, challenges to be faced and overcome … and, above all, because I have been asked to. A ll of these factors which have played a part in my decision would carry little more than moral and individual weight if I didn’t think that a large part of our national football family were behind me. It has been the groups who form the Assembly who have encouraged me in my decision and I could not say no to them. That is another reason why I am standing as a candidate in the elections for the presidency of the Spanish Football Federation. Revista Rev Revist istaadel dde elaR la aRFEF RFEF FEF letter from the President
