Verónica Vayas, una maestra
de Educación Especial de
la Academia Bellalago, fue
reconocida como la Distinguida
Educadora de la Minoría del
Año en la ceremonia de entrega
de premios realizada el 6 de
mayo por su entusiasmo y su
infrenable dedicación al hacer
que cada uno de los niños con
los cuales ella tiene contacto se
sienta especial.
Verónica, de origen Ecuatoriano,
vino a los Estados Unidos en
1996 para estudiar su Maestría en Educación Especial. Una vez
finalizado sus estudios ella vió la necesidad de maestros de Educación
Especial en la Florida y se trasladó a Kissimmee desde Oregon en
el año 1999. Desde ese entonces ha estado trabajando en el Distrito
Escolar de Osceola. Vayas trabaja a diario con estudiantes quienes
tienen una amplia variedad de habilidades que van desde dificultades

Veronica Vayas, an Exceptional
Education teacher at Bellalago
Academy, was recognized at
a May 6th awards ceremony
for her enthusiasm and her
overwhelming dedication to
making each and every child
she comes in contact with

Osceola School District’s 2009
Distinguished Minority Educator
of the Year. Verónica was born
in Ecuador. She came to the
United States on 1996 to get
her Master Degree in Special
Education. Upon graduation,
she saw the need of Exceptional Education teachers in Florida so
she decided to stay. She moved to Kissimmee from Oregon and has
been working with the Osceola County School District since 1999.
She works daily with students who have a wide range of abilities from
slight learning disabilities to emotional challenges. On last year’s
FCAT, her students, many of whom were considered to

St. Cloud, Fla. – City of St. Cloud
established a public records viewing
center, or kiosk, May 6 at City Hall
(Building A, first floor) to expand the
community’s access to public records
and compliment the City’s current
records accessibility.
“Este proyecto fue mencionado por

Kissimmee, Fla. – El Departamento
de Bomberos de Kissimmee (KFD,
siglas en inglés) está extendiendo la
veda para la incineración comercial
por otros 45 días. Las condiciones
persistentes del clima seco están
contribuyendo a frecuentes amenazas
de fuego que se espera continúen en
el futuro inmediato.
KFD continua la veda en todo tipo
de fuegos exteriores incluyendo
los fuegos permitidos de desechos
comerciales, fosas y fogatas al aire
libre por los próximos 45 días dentro de
los límites incorporados de la Ciudad.
La veda estará sujeta a extensiones
en incrementos de siete días mientras
sea necesario y se hará cumplir por
el personal del Departamento de
Bomberos de Kissimmee.
El Código de la Ciudad, Capítulo 6-
1-57 (H) establece, “Todos los fuegos
abiertos de basura de patio...es
prohibido”. Por lo tanto, se le recuerda
a los residente de la Ciudad que en

El tenis Quick Start ofrece una forma
divertida e interactiva para que los
niños aprendan a jugar tenis. El juego
se realiza en una pequeña cancha
con bolas de “foam”. Las lecciones se
ofrecen este verano para niños de 10
años y menores.
La cuota de inscripción es de $45, más
$18 pagaderos a la Asociación de Tenis
de los E.U. Esto cubre la membresía
a la Asociación de Tenis (USTA, siglas
en inglés), camisa de uniforme de
jersey marca NIKE, raqueta de tenis
nueva, y bolas de “foam”. Se anima a

Las clases se llevarán a cabo los
Domingos de 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
por un total de siete semanas del 31

Kissimmee, Fla. – The Kissimmee
Fire Department (KFD) is extending
the ban on commercial burn permits
for another 45 days. Persistent dry
weather conditions are contributing to
frequent fi re threats that are expected
to continue in the foreseeable future.
KFD is continuing the ban on all
types of outside burning including
permitted commercial debris fi res,
open fi re pits and campfi res for the
next 45 days within the incorporated
limits of the City. The ban will be
subject to extensions in seven-day
increments as long as necessary and
will be enforced by Kissimmee Fire
Department personnel.
City Code Chapter 6-1-57 (H) states,
“All open burning of yard trash…is
prohibited.” T h e r e f o r e
C i t y r e s i d e n t s
are reminded that at no time is the
burning of trash, garbage or yard
debris allowed.

OFFERS AN OPEN HOUSE
FOR TENNIS PLAYERS
Kissimmee, Fla. - The City of
Kissimmee Parks and Recreation
Department is offering an Open
House to promote the new Quick Start
program.
Quick Start tennis offers a fun and
interactive way for kids to learn to
play tennis. The game is played on
a smaller court with foam balls. The
lessons are being offered this summer
for kids age 10 and younger.
The registration fee is $45, plus
$18 payable to the U.S. Tennis
Association (USTA). This covers
a USTA membership, NIKE jersey
uniform shirt, new tennis racket, and
foam balls. Parents are encouraged to
reserve a spot as soon as possible.
This class will be held on Sundays
from 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. for a total
of seven weeks—from May 31 through
July 19. All tennis classes will be held
at the Oak Street Park Tennis Courts,
located at 717 N. Palm Avenue in
Kissimmee.

En vista de que el Distrito Escolar
de Osceola sigue buscando maneras
de ahorrar dinero en estos tiempos
de inestabilidad económica, ahorrará
en servicios y costos operacionales
implementando una semana laboral
de 4 días durante los meses de
verano. Comenzando a partir del 8 de
junio y finalizando el 10 de agosto, las
oficinas administrativas y la recepción
del distrito escolar estarán abiertos
al público de lunes a jueves en el
siguiente horario:
Lunes a miércoles de 7am a 5:30pm
y los jueves de 7am a 5pm.
Para la semana del 29 de junio abrirá
en su horario regular de 7am a 5:30
pm.
El Campamento de verano del
Distrito Escolar de Osceola se llevará
a cabo de lunes a viernes de 6:30
am hasta las 6pm en las siguientes
escuelas: Reedy Creek, Poinciana,
Harmony Community, Ventura,
Michigan Avenue, St. Cloud, Partin
Settlement, Flora Ridge, Sunrise,
Highlands, and Kissimmee. Las
oficinas administrativas de Extended
Day permanecerán abiertas los cinco

FOR COST SAVINGS
As the Osceola School District
continues to look at ways to save
money in this time of economic
instability, the district will save on
utility costs and operational costs by
implementing a four-day work week
during the summer months. Beginning
the week of June 8, 2009, and ending
the week of August 10, 2009, the
school district’s administrative offices
and school front offices will be open to
the public Monday through Thursday
during the following hours:
--Monday - Wednesday -- 7:00 a.m.
- 5:30 p.m.
--Thursday -- 7:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
For the week of June 29, 2009,
regular work hours of 8:00 a.m. - 4:30
p.m. will be followed. School District
offices will be closed on Friday, July
3.
Osceola School District’s Extended
Day Summer Camp will run Monday
through Friday from 6:30 a.m. until
6:00 p.m. at 11 elementary school
locations: Reedy Creek, Poinciana,
Harmony Community, Ventura,
Michigan Avenue, St. Cloud, Partin
Settlement, Flora Ridge, Sunrise,
Highlands, and Kissimmee. Extended
Day’s administrative offices will remain
open five days a week throughout the
summer to support the camps.
The School District’s Voluntary
Prekindergarten Program (VPK)
will run Monday through Thursday,
from June 10 through August 6, from
7:45 a.m. until 5:15 p.m. at three
school locations: Ross E. Jeffries
Center, Chambers Park, and Sunrise
Elementary.
Some district facilities may be open
on Fridays for teacher trainings,
school-based events, or maintenance
work.
By utilizing a summer four-day work
week in 2008, the district saved
between $150,000 to $200,000. It
is anticipated that approximately the
same amount, if not more, will be
realized for the upcoming summer
months.

Mill Creek Elementary’s Human Gross
Out Night will be held on Tuesday,
May 19, from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
The Orlando Science Center will
have 15 hands-on stations where
students and parents can experience
the disgusting side of science in
the cafeteria. Interactive stations
will include: Bad Breath, Blood and
Bruises, Ear Wax, Digestion, Farts, I
Hate Brussel Sprouts!, Poop, Scabs,
Snot and Boogers, Sweat, Up Close
and Personal, Urine, Vomit, Warts, and
Vinegar Bones. Family Human Gross
Out Night encourages cooperative
learning among students, parents, and
teachers. The activities will introduce
scientific and mathematic processes,
concepts, and themes with a fun and
hands-on approach. There will also

TALLAHASSEE – El Gobernador
Charlie Crist firmó el proyecto del
Senado 344, Dori Slosberg y Katie
Marchetti Safety Belt Law, la ley exige
que los conductores de vehículos usen
el cinturón de seguridad por obligación
a partir del 30 de junio de 2009.
El Gobernador Crist comentó: “Me
siento orgulloso de firmar esta ley que
va a salvar vidas en la Florida y prevenir
lesiones severas, que se hubieran
podido prevenir de otra forma. Nada
es tan importante como proteger a los
floridanos y a los turistas”.
La violación a esta ley tendrá como
resultado la emisión de una infracción
de tránsito, el National Highway Traffic

Safety Belt Law. The legislation
mandates the use of seatbelts in motor
vehicles, effective June 30, 2009.
“Today I am proud to sign legislation
that will help save lives in Florida and
prevent serious injuries that otherwise
could have been prevented,” said
Governor Crist. “Nothing is of greater
importance than keeping Florida’s
citizens and visitors safe.”

The Police Mounted Patrol’s mission
includes community policing initiatives,
serving as police department liaisons
with citizens, and participating in local
events, such as parades and school
demonstrations. The Police Mounted
Patrol may also assist in search and
rescue missions, crime deterrence,
and other law enforcement duties as
required. The newly assigned officers
and their horses are: Captain Raina
Scaglione and Nemesis; Officer Tia
Thai and Pistol; Officer Casey Lawson
and Sage
“It has been estimated that one
mounted officer on horseback has
the effect of 10 officers on foot,” said
Capt. Raina Scaglione, one of the
Police Mounted Patrol team members.
“Mounted officers can be seen for
blocks, presenting a great crime
deterrent, because on their horses,
officers become 10 feet tall. Mounted
officers are also able to ride on
horseback into areas where a patrol
vehicle or officers on foot may not
be able to go. A mounted officer can
also carry ample supplies and remain
searching for long periods of time.”
The three team members received
extensive training in the use and
handling of horses. A key factor in
the selection of these horses for law
enforcement duties is the evaluation
of their gentle disposition and meeting
set standards. These include the

INFLUENZA N1H1 –
SITUACIÓN ACTUAL
Situación actual hasta el día 14 de
mayo.
Los cuatro laboratorios del
Departamento de salud han recibido
el suministro para hacer las pruebas
de H1N1 de los Centros de control
y prevención de las enfermedades,
esto le ayuda al Departamento en la
rapidez para realizar las pruebas de
posibles casos, ay que no hay que
enviar las muestras a los laboratorios
del CDC.
Hay 63 casos confi rmados de la
gripe porcina H1N1 en la Florida
en los siguientes condados: uno
en Osceola, Alachua, Clay, Collier,
Flager, Lake, Manatee, Marion, Indian
River, Okechobee, Seminole y Duval,
dos en Brevard y Palm Beach, tres en
Pinellas, Sarasota, y Orange, siete en
Lee, ocho en Hillsborough, once en
Dade y doce en Broward.
Casos nuevos confi rmados son:
Sarasota: una niña de 6 años, Palm
Beach: un joven de 18 años y un señor
de 75 años, Broward: un señor de 60
años y Orange: un joven de 21 años
Hay 2 casos probables en el condado
de Okaloosa. Los Centros de control

All four Department of
Health laboratories have received
testing supplies from the Centers
for Disease Control and now can
test samples to confi rm H1N1 Swine
Flu. This testing capability allows the
Department to expedite results as
we no longer need to send probable
cases to CDC laboratories.
Florida has 63 confi rmed cases in
the following counties: one in Osceola,

POLICIA DE KISSIMMEE
BUSCA SOSPECHOSO DE
ROBO A MANO ARMADA
Kissimmee, FL – Los Detectives de la
Policía de Kissimmee están buscando
un ladrón a mano armada quien asaltó
la farmacia CVS ubicada en 1300 East
Vine Street el domingo pasado.
Aproximadamente a la 1:45pm del
12 de mayo el sospechoso entró a la
farmacia CVS, se acercó al mostrador
e intento realizar una compra pequeña.
Cuando el cajero abrió la caja
registradora, el sospecho se levantó
la camisa y le mostró un cuchillo que
cargaba en su cintura y le pidió dinero.
El sospechoso huyó con una cantidad
de dinero no determinada. Nadie
resultó herido durante el incidente.
El sospechoso fue descrito como un
hombre de la raza blanca de 20 a 30
años de edad, de aproximadamente
5’9 a 6 pies de altura y pesa alrededor
de 180-190 libras. Tiene cabello
negro corto. La última vez que fue

DETIENE A SOSPECHO DE
ROBO DE BANCO
Kissimmee, FL – El 12 de mayo a la
1:15 aproximadamente, un hombre
entró al Fifth Third Bank ubicado en
2280 Boggy Creek Road y le entregó
al cajero una nota indicando que eso
era un robo. El sospechoso dejó saber
que tenía un arma. El cajero acató la
orden del sospechoso y éste huyó.
Nadie resultó herido.
Un testigo siguió al sospechoso
hasta los Apartamentos Grande Court
en Boggy Creek Rd. Los ofi ciales de
policía de Kissimmee marcaron un
perímetro alrededor del apartamento
y procedieron a evacuar a los demás
apartamentos. El equipo SWAT de
Kissimmee y el Equipo de Negociación
de Crisis pudieron convencer al
sospechoso para que se rindiera. El
testigo identifi có a una de las personas
que salieron del apartamento como el
ladrón de bancos.
Las cuatro personas que se
encontraban dentro del apartamento
fueron trasladadas al Departamento
de Policía de Kissimmee para ser
interrogados acerca de su posible
participación en el robo al banco.
A Michael Rolfe (FN 11-20-1976) se
le imputaron cargos de robo a Mano
Armada y Robo en Mayor Cuantía. Fue
procesado en la cárcel del Condado
Osceola sin derecho a fi anza. Los
otros individuos que fueron tomados
en custodia ya fueron liberados. Ellos
no tuvieron ninguna participación en el

ROBBERY SUSPECT
Kissimmee, Fla. – Kissimmee Police
Detectives are looking for an armed
robber who held up the CVS Pharmacy
located at 1300 East Vine Street on
Sunday.
On May 12, at approximately 1:45
p.m. the suspect entered the CVS
Pharmacy. He approached the
counter and attempted to make a minor
purchase. When the cashier opened
the drawer the suspect lifted his shirt
and displayed a knife that was in his
waistband and demanded money.
The suspect fl ed with an undisclosed
amount of money. No one in the store
was injured during the incident.
The suspect is described as a white
male between the ages of 20 and 30,
is approximately 5’9” – 6’ tall, weighing
about 180-190 pounds. He has short
dark hair. The suspect was last seen
wearing a faded blue baseball cap,
sunglasses, a white long sleeved shirt
with writing on the front and back, a
black undershirt, black jeans and white
tennis shoes.

APPREHEND A POSSIBLE
BANK ROBBERY SUSPECT
Kissimmee, Fla. – On May 12, at
approximately 1:15 p.m. a man walked
into the Fifth Third Bank located at
2280 Boggy Creek Road and gave the
teller a note indicating he was robbing
the bank. The suspect implied that he
had a weapon. The teller complied
and the suspect fl ed the bank. No one
inside the bank was injured.
A witness followed the suspect to
the Grande Court Apartments on
El Osceola Star . May 15 - 21, 2009 . 13
Boggy Creek Road. Kissimmee police
offi cers set up a perimeter around the
apartment and evacuated surrounding
apartments. The Kissimmee SWAT
team and Crisis Negotiation team were
dispatched to the location to assist in
apprehending the suspect. The Crisis
Negotiation team was able to convince
the suspect to surrender. A witness
identifi ed one of the people taken out
of the apartment as the bank robber.
Four people who were inside the
apartment have been transported to
the Kissimmee Police Department
for questioning about their possible
involvement in the bank robbery.
Michael Rolfe (D.O.B. 11/20/76) of
Kissimmee has been charged with
Armed Robbery and Grand Theft.
He is being booked into the Osceola
County Jail and will be held on zero
bond. The other individuals taken into
custody during incident have been
released. They had no involvement in
the robbery.

the game, 92-88. During
the post-game interview,
Howard complained about
coach decisions throughout
the game. He said, “the
coaches have to recognize
what’s working on the floor,
and stick to it even if half
your starters on the floor.
It’s not just the guys you
have put the most trust
in. You have to have trust
in everybody”. It may not
have been a great decision
on Howard’s part to point
fingers while still battling in
the playoffs. Now there is
a sense of desperation, and
Howard’s remarks show concern for
his team and their chemistry.
Due to time limits with the newspaper
we do not know the outcome of game
6. The Celtics are up 3-2 in a best of
7 series. If they won in game 6 the
series is over, and the Magic need to
reflect on this series correcting their
mistakes for next season. If the Magic
won game 6, then game 7 will be in
Boston on Sunday night.

necesitan la ayuda del público para
localizar a un sospechoso involucrado
en múltiples robos armados a CVS. El
primer incidente ocurrió el 3 de mayo,
aproximadamente a las 8:35 p.m. Los
detectives de la Oficina del Sheriff del
Condado Osceola respondieron a la
Farmacia CVS localizada en el 3300 S.
Orange Blossom Trail en Kissimmee.
A su llegada, los detectives hablaron
con el empleado de la tienda quien
indicó que un hombre Hispano entró a
la tienda y demando efectivo a punta
de pistola. El huyó del área con una
cantidad indeterminada de dinero. El
segundo incidente ocurrió el 13 de
mayo, aproximadamente a las 12:36

FOR CVS ARMED ROBBERY
SUSPECT

Sheriff’s detectives need the public’s
help in locating a suspect involved
in multiple CVS armed robberies.
The first incident occurred on May 3
at approximately 8:35 p.m. Osceola
County Sheriff’s deputies responded
to CVS Pharmacy located at 3300 S.
Orange Blossom Trail in Kissimmee.
Upon arrival, deputies spoke with
the store employee who indicated
a Hispanic male entered the store
and demanded cash at gunpoint. He
fled in the area with an undisclosed
amount of money. The second incident
occurred May 13 at approximately
12:36 a.m. Deputies responded to
the CVS Pharmacy located at 1999
E. Osceola Parkway in Buenaventura
Lakes. Upon arrival, deputies spoke
with the store employee who indicated
a Hispanic male entered the store and
demanded money. He left the area in
a 1996-2006, 4-door, silver Mitsubishi
Gallant with tinted windows.
The suspect is described as a
Hispanic male, approximately 5’8”
with a thin build and braids. He was
wearing a black t-shirt, blue jeans and
a white t-shirt covering his head and
face.
In the last ten days, 5 CVS Pharmacy
stores in Central Florida have been
robbed and detectives believe one
suspect may be responsible all of the
incidents. Anyone with information
is asked to call the Osceola County

(8477). Crimeline offers a reward
for information that leads to a felony
arrest.

County Sheriff’s Office has openings
for a self-defense awareness program
for women scheduled for May 21, 2009
at 6:00 p.m. Self Defense Awareness
Familiarization Exchange or SAFE is
designed to educate women on how
to protect themselves if they should
become a victim. The 2-hour class
teaches that 90% of self-defense
is awareness, risk reduction and
avoiding confrontation, while only 10%
is physical.
“Taking responsibility and educating
yourself is the first step in staying
safe. Although you may not be able
to prevent an attack from occurring,
there are ways to protect yourself and
lessen your chances of becoming a
victim,” states Sheriff Hansell.

ACTOS ILEGALES
Condado Osceola – Los detectives

arrestaron nuevamente un sospechoso
que es VIH positivo y sabiéndolo tuvo
sexo con múltiples hombres luego
de que otra víctima se presentó con
información. El 7 de mayo, Eneydi
Elsie Torres fue arrestada nuevamente
y acusada de 7 cargos de Actos
Ilegales, F.S.S. 384.24(2), un
cargo por cada encuentro. La
víctima se presentó a finales de
marzo luego de ver la cobertura
de la prensa del primer arresto
de Torres. La víctima le dijo a
los detectives que había estado
en una relación de 3 meses con
Torres mientras residía en un
complejo de apartamentos que
Torres administraba. En ningún
momento durante la relación
Torres le dijo a la víctima que era VIH
positivo. Torres
fe ingresada en la Carcel del Condado
Osceola desde entonces fue liberada
bajo fianza.
Antecedentes:
La investigación comenzó el 5 de
febrero cuando los detectives tomaron
el reporte de una víctima quien allegó
había tenido sexo consensual con
Torres pero que no sabía que era
VIH positivo. La víctima le dijo a los
detectives que Torres nunca le había
dicho que ella tenía la enfermedad.
Durante la investigación, los detectives
hablaron con otra víctima que tuvo
sexo consensual con Torres pero que
no sabía de la enfermedad. Torres fue
traída para ser interrogada y le dijo a
los detectives que ella había sido VIH
positivo por más de 15 años. Basados
en la información, los detectives
arrestaron a Torres. Ella fue ingresada
en la Cárcel del Condado Osceola con
una fianza de $20,000.

Osceola County – Osceola County
Sheriff’s detectives re-arrested a
suspect who is HIV positive and
knowingly had sex with multiple men
after another victim came forward with
information. On May 7, Eneydi Elsie
Torres was re-arrested and charged
with 7 counts of Unlawful Acts,
F.S.S. 384.24(2), one count for every
encounter. The victim came forward in
late March
after seeing
the media
coverage of
Torres’ first
arrest. The
victim told
detectives
he was in
a 3 month
relationship
with Torres
w h i l e
residing at the
apartment complex Torres managed.
At no time during the relationship did
Torres disclose to the victim she was
HIV positive. Torres was booked into
the Osceola County Jail and has since
been released on bond.
Background:
The investigation began on February
5 when deputies took a report from a
victim who alleged he had consensual
sex with Torres but did not know
she was HIV positive. The victim
told detectives Torres never told
him she had the disease. During the
investigation, detectives spoke with
another victim who had consensual
sex with Torres but did not know about
the disease. Torres was brought in for
questioning and told detectives she
has been HIV positive for more than
15 years. Based on the information,
detectives arrested Torres. She was
booked into the Osceola County Jail
on $20,000 bond.

BUSCA SOSPECHO DE
INTENTO DE ROBO A MANO
ARMADA
Kissimmee, FL – Los Detectives de la
Policía de Kissimmee están buscando
a un sospechoso que intentó robar la
farmacia CVS ubicada en 1205 West
Vine Street en Kissimmee.
El 23 de mayo, aproximadamente a

LOOKING FOR ATTEMPTED
ARMED ROBBERY SUSPECT
Kissimmee, Fla. – Kissimmee Police
Detectives are looking for a suspect
who attempted to rob the CVS
Pharmacy located at 1205 West Vine
Street in Kissimmee.
On May 13, at approximately 12:00
a.m., Kissimmee Police offi cers
responded to the CVS Pharmacy
in reference to an attempted armed
robbery. The suspect entered
the store, showed a weapon and
demanded money from the employee.
The employee ran from the suspect
and the suspect fl ed without taking
anything from the store. No one inside
the store was injured in the incident.
The suspect is described as a Hispanic
male between 18 and 22 years of
age, approximately 5’10” tall with a
thin build. He was last seen wearing
a grey hooded style sweatshirt and
a disguise over his face. Kissimmee
Police Detectives are working with
the pharmacy to obtain surveillance
video.

provided these recommendations:
People with respiratory illness should
stay home from work or school to

spread of respiratory illness.
