‘making failure’ is not oppositional to success but shows an investigation<br />

into new possibilities.<br />

D: Yes, this is very clear in the work of Raúl Gómez, El Fracaso es <strong>el</strong><br />

camino hacia <strong>el</strong> éxito, 2011 where he knowingly disregar<strong>de</strong>d the rules<br />

for pulling the cloth from un<strong>de</strong>rneath glass objects on a table, making it<br />

an act of public failure.<br />

A: Talking about knowingly making an act of public failure, how you fe<strong>el</strong><br />

about your proposal being s<strong>el</strong>ected? Are you activ<strong>el</strong>y including curatorial<br />

failure in the exhibition?<br />

D: I don’t think of mys<strong>el</strong>f as a curator because I am actually an artist.<br />

As an artist I see the show more clos<strong>el</strong>y r<strong>el</strong>ated to an artistic project<br />

rather than a curatorial one. For example, I don’t approach failure as<br />

philosophical question but more as an artistic one. Someone said to<br />

me that for the show to have validity it must incorporate an <strong>el</strong>ement of<br />

failure. I thought of various possible ways for this to happen but I also<br />

want to make sure that it’s not by inserting a glitch or a mistake, as<br />

Making Failure is not about making mistakes.<br />

Initially the i<strong>de</strong>a for the exhibition came from my own artistic practice<br />

because ‘making failure’ is a concept that I, and several artists I know<br />

and admire, work with. I thought it could be good to <strong>de</strong>v<strong>el</strong>op a project<br />

that would bring us together. Also, I initially wanted to show my own work<br />

alongsi<strong>de</strong> that of others and in the end I might do that, to make it clear<br />

that I am an artist curating an exhibition with other artists’ work.<br />

A: Let me provoke you by asking if you fe<strong>el</strong> that your active failure here<br />

is that you have turned yours<strong>el</strong>f into some kind of curator for the show?<br />

D: So my biggest failure as an artist is to work as a curator! I like this<br />

but these are your words not mine! I was talking to a friend about this<br />

question and she suggested that I should perhaps challenge or even<br />

break the rules of <strong>Inéditos</strong>. This is why I thought of inserting my own<br />
