‘making failure’ is not oppositional to success but shows an investigation
into new possibilities.
D: Yes, this is very clear in the work of Raúl Gómez, El Fracaso es el
camino hacia el éxito, 2011 where he knowingly disregarded the rules
for pulling the cloth from underneath glass objects on a table, making it
an act of public failure.
A: Talking about knowingly making an act of public failure, how you feel
about your proposal being selected? Are you actively including curatorial
failure in the exhibition?
D: I don’t think of myself as a curator because I am actually an artist.
As an artist I see the show more closely related to an artistic project
rather than a curatorial one. For example, I don’t approach failure as
philosophical question but more as an artistic one. Someone said to
me that for the show to have validity it must incorporate an element of
failure. I thought of various possible ways for this to happen but I also
want to make sure that it’s not by inserting a glitch or a mistake, as
Making Failure is not about making mistakes.
Initially the idea for the exhibition came from my own artistic practice
because ‘making failure’ is a concept that I, and several artists I know
and admire, work with. I thought it could be good to develop a project
that would bring us together. Also, I initially wanted to show my own work
alongside that of others and in the end I might do that, to make it clear
that I am an artist curating an exhibition with other artists’ work.
A: Let me provoke you by asking if you feel that your active failure here
is that you have turned yourself into some kind of curator for the show?
D: So my biggest failure as an artist is to work as a curator! I like this
but these are your words not mine! I was talking to a friend about this
question and she suggested that I should perhaps challenge or even
break the rules of Inéditos. This is why I thought of inserting my own
