DANGER OF HYDRAULIC OIL INJECTION INJURIES
A hydraulic fluid injection is perhaps the most dangerous injury that can result from a hydraulic hose failure. It
can appear benign at the beginning so it often gets dismissed as not urgent and medical care is postponed.
Injected hydraulic oils are also highly toxic - so in addition to a physical cut or stab, they actually poison you.
Take an MSDS sheet of the hydraulic oil with you to the emergency room. Inform the medical staff that you
have suffered hydraulic oil injection injury when you arrive. Have someone find out as much as possible about
the hydraulic system pressure and estimated velocity of the pinhole leak that caused the injury. Report these
findings to the medical staff.
The longer the wait before treatment, the higher the risk. At first, injections may feel like a bee sting or wire
prick. The entry area may look like a pin prick. Do not let this fool you. The size of the entry wound is a poor
indicator of the seriousness of the injury. What looks like a simple puncture wound can be life threatening. The
area around the injury typically turns red and swells within a couple of hours. Throbbing and numbness follow.
If left untreated, the injury can lead to amputation and even death.
REMEMBER:
‣ NEVER TOUCH A PRESSURIZED HOSE WITH YOUR HAND.
‣ USE A PIECE OF CARDBOARD TO SEARCH FOR A HYDRAULIC LEAK INSIDE A
CABINET OR UNDER AN ENGINE HOOD.
‣ IF YOU SUSPECT AN INJECTION INJURY HAS OCCURRED, GET TO AN EMERGENCY
ROOM RIGHT AWAY!

PELIGRO DE LESIONES PRODUCIDAS POR INYECCIÓN
DE ACEITE HIDRÁULICO
Una inyección de fluido hidráulico es quizás la lesión más peligrosa que puede producirse a causa de un fallo en
la manguera hidráulica. Al principio puede parecer leve y, por eso, suele considerarse que no es urgente y la
atención médica se posterga. Las inyecciones de aceites hidráulicos también son muy tóxicas y, además de
producir cortes o lesiones físicas, pueden producir envenenamiento.
Si acude a emergencias, lleve una hoja de datos de seguridad de los materiales (Material Safety Data Sheets,
MSDS) del aceite hidráulico. Cuando llegue, informe al personal médico que sufrió una lesión por inyección de
aceite hidráulico. Pídale a alguien que averigüe todo lo que pueda sobre la presión del sistema hidráulico y la
velocidad estimada de la fuga en el pequeño orificio que produjo la lesión. Informe sobre estos hallazgos al
personal médico.
Cuanto más espere para recibir tratamiento, mayor será el riesgo. Al principio, las inyecciones pueden ser
similares a una picadura de abeja o a un pinchazo de alambre. Puede parecer como el pinchazo de un alfiler. No
permita que esto lo engañe. El tamaño de la herida de ingreso es un indicador insuficiente de la gravedad de la
lesión. Lo que parece una simple herida por pinchazo puede ser potencialmente mortal. Por lo general, el área
alrededor de la lesión se vuelve de color rojo y se inflama en un par de horas. Luego, se producen palpitaciones
y adormecimiento. Si no se recibe tratamiento, la lesión puede llevar a la amputación e incluso a la muerte.
RECUERDE:
‣ NO TOQUE NUNCA CON LAS MANOS UNA MANGUERA PRESURIZADA.
‣ UTILICE UN TROZO DE CARTÓN PARA BUSCAR UNA FUGA HIDRÁULICA EN EL
INTERIOR DE UNA ESTANCIA O DEL CAPÓ DE UN MOTOR.
‣ SI SOSPECHA QUE SE HA PRODUCIDO UNA LESIÓN POR INYECCIÓN, ACUDA DE
INMEDIATO A EMERGENCIAS.
