de Esperanza
y
La Generación
la Communidad
From Deisy Anderson, Profesora de Español/
Si
a becas privadas.
divertirse tanto.

Hispanic/Latino Advisory Group
Kankakee Community College Volume 6 ◆ Edition 1 February 2011
The
Dream Generation
& community
From Deisy Anderson, Assistant Professor of Spanish/
Multicultural Student Services Coordinator
The Hispanic Advisory committee, Cultural Diversity
committee, counselors, staff and business community are
coming together in many areas to make sure the hopes
and dreams of our Dream Generation students continue to be
heard and supported by our college. Although the Dream Act
was approved in the House but fell five votes short in the Senate
in December, the massive advocacy push, including the work
of many community colleges, has raised the profile of this
issue to an unprecedented level. The American Association of
Community College’s will continue to advocate for this bill.
(AACC 2010)
In the mean time, what can KCC and our students do to
keep the motivation alive? The Dream Generation students are
brilliant, talented and ambitious young leaders. The challenges
they face on a daily basis make dream
generation students vulnerable to depression
for many reasons. Our mission is to point
out the possibilities, not the limitations, the
triumphs and not the failures. If taking the
bus transportation is difficult, reach out to
a mentor and ask about how to get a more
convenient ride. If working isn’t possible
today, invest in yourself through education
and apply for private scholarships. These
dreamers must continue to have faith and
hope that one day they will have access,
opportunity and recognition.
The first step is to be proactive. Apply
right away for private scholarships and,
if possible, financial aid. Find a mentor,
counselor or career expert to talk about possibilities for
your future. Also, get involved in community programs and
community service-related activities. This creates a positive
foundation of gratitude and giving back. Doors will open in
ways you never imagined and you will have the opportunity of
getting to know positive members of the community. This helps
increase your chances of getting great recommendations that
strengthen your resume.
The following plans and events are goals that have been put
together by the Hispanic Advisory Committee and KCC staff
and faculty to meet the educational and wellness needs of the
community.
Mentoring our mentors program
qualifications and roles of different types of mentors. We aim to
offer guidelines and procedures to have a practical mentoring
program and being able to provide a realistic approach to
mentor students into achieving career path goals.
The 2nd Annual Hispanic Arts & Heritage Day for
Education will be held during the Farmer’s Market in
down town Kankakee in August.
We hope to have another day of festivity in 2011 with
cultural food, live music, arts and crafts, and dance. Last
year, it was wonderful seeing Hispanic families actively
involved and having fun at the Farmer’s Market. Through
supporting Hispanics in education, come join us this
summer. E-mail danderson@kcc.edu for more information.
