David Barkeley.
Learn about and see pictures of Hero Street
USA in the small town of Silvis, IL, at http://www.herostreetusa.
org/. This street has been renamed Hero Street USA because,
according to U.S. Department of Defense research, no other street
of comparable size has sent as many men and women–more than
110–to serve in the armed forces as has this block of approximately
twenty-five homes. The Hero Street USA monument honors
the sacrifice of eight heroes from World War II and Korea, all of
Mexican descent: Joseph Gomez, Peter Masias, Johnny Muños,
Tony Pompa, Frank Sandoval, Joe Sandoval, William Sandoval,
and Claro Soliz.
Make copies of the 1918 poem by Everard
Jack Appleton, “An American Creed,” on page 32. Explain that a
creed is a statement of belief. Then ask students to discuss whether
they can tell, by examining the actions of Marcelino Serna and
David Barkley Cantú, whether these two patriots believed in the
American creed described in the poem.
Tony Pompa, Frank Sandoval, Joe Sandoval, William Sandoval y
