en Costa Rica
En Costa Rica contamos con la única planta metalmecánica de todas las Américas que manufactura Luminarias
Fluorescentes y de Alta Intensidad de Descarga (HID) para la corporación Havells-Sylvania. Nuestro personal
altamente calificado, tiene más de 30 años de experiencia en el negocio, posee un gran compromiso con la calidad
y con el servicio al cliente interno y externo. Por tal motivo somos los líderes en la fabricación de luminarias a nivel
regional.
Nuestro compromiso con la calidad nace desde la relación con nuestros proveedores de materias primas, con ellos
nos mantenemos en constante comunicación para obtener las mejores insumos, siempre en cumplimiento con
nuestras especificaciones. En el proceso de fabricación desarrollamos controles minuciosos de sus distintas etapas,
éstos nos garantizan calidad en la fuente y en las etapas posteriores. Nuestro proceso de pintura, que utiliza
tecnología Europea y Suramericana, es monitoreado constantemente por nosotros mismos como por nuestros
proveedores de pintura para asegurar su estabilidad y excelente acabado. Finalmente, en nuestro proceso de
ensamble se le da el toque final a nuestros productos, con un excelente equipo de trabajo que asegura la calidad

In Costa Rica we have the only metalworking plant all over the Americas that manufactures Fluorescent Fixtures and
High Intensity Discharge (HID) for the Havells -Sylvania Corporation. Our highly trained staff has over 30 years

externally. For this reason we are the leading manufacturer of luminaries at regional level.

manufacturing process we develop depth control at the different stages, which guarantee quality at source and at

Departamento de
Investigación y Desarrollo
El departamento de Investigación y Desarrollo de Luminarias (I+D) de Havells
Sylvania cuenta con un equipo de diseñadores al mando de computadoras y
programas de diseño de última generación. En sus instalaciones al lado de la
planta de manufactura de luminarias, el departamento I+D lleva ideas a
conceptos, pasando por modelados y simulaciones tridimensionales hasta el
prototipado y pruebas físicas de desempeño luminoso y físico.
Estas ideas surgen de diseños nuevos de luminarias que no se encuentran en
nuestro catálogo o de rediseños requeridos. Se toma en cuenta desde el
origen de la idea, pasando por todos los procesos hasta tener como
resultado un producto que satisfaga los requerimientos solicitados.
El departamento pone a disposición las diferentes áreas en las que se
especializa. Esto contempla varios aspectos. Investigación es uno de ellos,
que trata de conocer mejor los intereses de nuestros clientes para saber si
nuestros productos satisfacen las necesidades de iluminación de sus
proyectos, así como también estar al tanto de las nuevas tendencias en
materia de construcción y tecnologías.
Espacios deportivos, recreativos y
urbanisticos.
Eficiencia lumínica es otro aspecto, el cual por medio de un programa
especializado se logra resultados cercanos a la realidad, donde se evalúa la
luminaria y se tiene como objetivo maximizar su eficiencia. El resultado de
este estudio da soporte a nuestro departamento de ingeniería de proyectos y
a diferentes clientes para que se pueda generar una simulación más cercana
a la realidad de la aplicación del producto.
Pruebas de temperatura, de estanqueidad y planos de conexiones eléctricas
es otro soporte técnico que el departamento brinda. Esto para garantizar,
entre otros, la calidad de nuestros productos.
Estos instrumentos de medición utilizados en el proceso de desarrollo de
luminarias sirven también para dar respuesta a solicitudes de clientes y
compararnos constantemente con fabricantes de luminarias de todo el
mundo

Se realiza también planos de conexiones eléctricas y diferente material
informativo, como instructivos de ensamble y de montaje, además de fichas
técnicas. De esta manera el cliente puede tener mayor información y más
clara del producto que está adquiriendo.
Finalmente, la experiencia y conocimientos acumulados en el departamento
de I+D se convierten en una fuente de soporte técnico y entrenamiento,
donde su personal capacitado puede dar respuesta a inquietudes técnicas de
luminarias, balastros y componentes, además de cualquier necesidad de
iluminación.

Qué es la
luz
La luz es una forma de radiación
electromagnética, indispensable para poder ver
las cosas, por eso puede ser usada como una herramienta para diferentes
propósitos en el desarrollo arquitectónico. Para lograr el efecto deseado en
iluminación hay que tomar en cuenta varios aspectos como el color e intensidad de
la luz, dimensiones, reflectáncias, tipos de lámparas y tipos de luminarias.
Conociendo y aplicando adecuadamente estos factores es que se logra crear
ambientes y sensaciones agradables y placenteras.
COLOR
El ojo humano responde de diferente manera hacia los distintos colores. Para
entender cómo el ojo humano ve los colores es necesario aclarar dos conceptos: la
apariencia y el rendimiento del color.
La apariencia del color se refiere a la temperatura, es decir, a la percepción del ojo
humano hacia la fuente de luz.
El rendimiento del color se refiere a la apariencia que la fuente lumínica le da a un
objeto. Los tipos de lámparas tienen diferentes rendimientos de color, por lo que
es importante conocer la aplicación específica para escoger la lámpara más
adecuada.
INTENSIDAD LUMÍNICA
La intensidad lumínica mide la cantidad de luz emitida en una dirección particular.
Es de gran importancia al diseñar iluminación con reflectores, y en este caso se mide
en Candelas de Potencia. En el caso de otras fuentes de luz normalmente se
expresa la cantidad total de flujo luminoso, la cual se mide en lúmenes.
DIMENSIONES Y REFLECTIVIDAD
Es necesario conocer las dimensiones y la
reflectividad de los lugares a iluminar para obtener
el ambiente deseado. Las dimensiones permiten
determinar las áreas a iluminar, así como las
distancias a las que se encontrarán las fuentes de
iluminación del plano de trabajo. La reflectividad
es una variante esencial del área a iluminar, ya que
se refiere al color y al acabado de las paredes, cielo
raso y piso.

& development
The Luminaries R&D Department of Havells Sylvania has a designer’s
team in command of cutting-edge technology and design software.
At its facilities, next to the luminaries manufacturing plant, the R&D
Department transforms ideas into concepts, through
three-dimensional modeling and simulation to prototyping and
material testing of light and physical performance.
These ideas arise from new luminaries designs that are not in our
catalog or from required redesigns. Every detail is taken into
consideration, from the origin of the idea through all the processes to
result in a product that satisfies the requested requirements.
The Department offers the different areas in which it specializes.
This includes various aspects. Research is one of them, which tries to
better understand the interests of our customers, in order to know
whether our products meet the lighting needs of their projects, as
well as keep abreast of new trends in construction and technology.
Sport facilities, residential and commercial areas.
Luminous efficiency is another aspect, which through a specialized
program achieves results close to reality, where the luminary is
evaluated and the goal is to maximize its efficiency. The result of this
study supports our Projects Engineering Department and different
customers so that it can generate a closer simulation to the reality of
product application.
Architectural lighting in parks, gardens, parking
lots and public outdoors.
Temperature and water tightness tests and electrical connections
plans are other technical supports the Department provides. This is to
guarantee, inter alia, the quality of our products.

What is
light
Light is a sort of electromagnetic radiation,
essential to allow visibility. That is why it may be
used as a tool for different purposes in architectural development. In order to
accomplish the desired lighting effect there are several aspects to take into
consideration such as color and intensity of light, as well as dimensions, reflection,
types of lamps and type of fixtures. By knowing and adequately applying these
factors it is possible to create appealing and pleasant environments and feelings.
Color
The human eye reacts in diverse ways to different colors. In order to understand
how human eye perceives the color it is necessary to explain two concepts: the
appearance of color and the color rendering index.
Color appearance is related to the color temperature, in other words, the
perception of the human eye towards the source of light.
Color rendering index refers to the appearance that light gives to an object.
Different types of lamps have different color performances, therefore it is important
to know the specific application for a more adequate lamp selection.
Light Intensity
The light intensity measures the amount of light. It is of great importance when
designing lighting with spotlights, and in this case, it is measured in Light Power. In
case of other sources of light it is usually described as a total quantity of light flux,
which is measured in lumens.
Dimensions and Reflectance
It is necessary to know the dimensions and
reflectance of the spaces to be lighted in order to
obtain the desired environment. Knowing the
dimensions allow making the right selection of
lighting products as well as defining the correct
position and arrangement of the selected fixtures.
Surface reflectances are an essencial variable of
the light calculation, since they refer to the color as
well as the finish in the walls, ceilings and floor,
which has a direct impact in the amount of
fixtures.

Tipos de
lámparas
Para escoger el tipo de lámpara adecuado se debe tomar en cuenta varios aspectos:
LÁMPARAS FLUORESCENTES
Son ideales para la iluminación general de interiores
como oficinas, fábricas y lugares públicos en general.
Han obtenido un desarrollo importante, especialmente
con las nuevas lámparas Octrón (T8) y Pentron (T5), que
tienen un alto rendimiento de color y eficiencia
lumínica, y con las fluorescentes compactas, una
alternativa muy eficiente ante las lámparas
incandescentes puesto que duran 10 veces más y
ahorran hasta un 75% de energía en iluminación.
LÁMPARAS DE MERCURIO
Son cómodas de maniobrar y tienen una larga vida útil
(24.000 horas). Se utilizan en exteriores, alumbrado
público, bodegas y parques.
LÁMPARAS DE ALTA PRESIÓN DE SODIO
Sustituyen las de Mercurio por ser 250% más eficientes
(LPW). Dado su tono amarillo, son muy adecuadas para
iliminación en carreteras, bodegas y exteriores en donde
no se necesite apreciación de color.
LÁMPARAS DE METALARC
Son casi tan eficientes como las de Sodio y brindan un
alto rendimiento del color, lo cual las hace ideales para
iluminación de campos deportivos, supermercados,
tiendas y cualquier tipo de edificación comercial.
LED’S (Diodos Emisores de Luz)
Los LED’S son dispositivos utilizados en la electrónica
desde hace mucho tiempo que tienen la particularidad
de emitir luz al ser alimentados eléctricamente. Su
evolución ha permitido utilizarlos como fuentes de luz
en todo tipo de aplicaciones aprovechando su larga vida
útil (más de 50.000 horas) y su bajo consumo el cual es
del rango de los miliamperios por cada diodo. En la
actualidad podemos encontrar diodos de luz cálida, fría
o de colores.

To select the adequate type of fixture aspects must be taken into consideration:
FLUORESCENT LAMPS
These are ideal for general lighting of interiors such as
offices, manufacturing plants and general public places.
They have obtained an important development,
especially with the new Octron® (T8) and Pentron® (T5)
lamps, which have a high color performance and light
efficiency, and with compact fluorescents, one very
efficient alternative compared to the incandescent
lamps since they last 10 times more and save up to 80%
in energy consumption.
MERCURY LAMPS
Mercury lamps are comfortable to maneuver and have
long lifespan (24,000 hours). They are used in
roadways lighting, outdoors, warehouses and parks.
HIGH-PRESSURE SODIUM LAMPS
Since high-pressure sodium lamps provide 250% more
efficiency (lumens per watts), they are used as
replacements for mercury lamps. Due to its yellowish
color projection, they are more adequate for road
lighting, warehouses and outdoor settings where there
is no need for distinguishing colors.
METALARC LAMPS
These are almost as efficient as the high-pressure
sodium fixtures and provide high color performance,
making them best to light sports fields, supermarkets,
stores and any type of commercial building.
LED’S (Light Emitting Diode)
The LED’s are devices that have been used in electronics
for a quite some time and have the distinctiveness of
transmitting light when electronically fed. Its evolution
has allowed to use them as sources of light in all types
of applications taking advantage of its long lifespan
(over 50,000 hours ), and its low energy consumption
which has a span from the milliampere per diode. We
can currently find warm light, cool light or colored
diodes.

Balastros
En Havells Sylvania contamos con una amplia gama de Balastros, dispositivos
encargados de transformar la energía para la adecuada operación de las lámparas.
Dependiendo de su estructura se dividen en magnéticos y electrónicos o
se pueden clasificar también según el tipo de lámpara.
Las funciones del balastro son:
Proveer de energía controlada para que se produzca el encendido del -
rescente.
Controlar, regular y emitir el suministro adecuado de corriente para que el
fluorescente trabaje a su máxima eficiencia.
Balastros para fluorescentes
Un fluorescente no puede ser colocado directamente a una línea eléctrica pues
cada tipo de fluorescente necesita voltajes de arranque que dependen de la
longitud, diámetro, construcción y gases del tubo. Una vez que el fluorescente
arranca, la corriente debe ser estabilizada por el balastro.
Tipos de Arranque:
Los balastros están diseñados para cuatro tipos de arranque según el fluorescente:
1. Precalentamiento (PH o pre-heat): Estos fluorescentes requieren que sus
electrodos se precalienten antes de iniciar el ciclo lumínico y necesitan de un
arrancador para encender.
2. Arranque rápido (QS o quick start): Al igual que el anterior, requiere que
los electrodos se precalienten; sin embargo el balastro está diseñado para
calentar el tubo sin necesidad del arrancador.
3. Arranque acelerado (RS o rapid start): Utilizan electrodos de bajo voltaje que
son automáticamente precalentados por el balastro, eliminando así la necesidad
de un arrancador.El balastro posee un bobinado de calentamiento que
arranca la lámpara y la mantiene funcionando.
4. Arranque instantáneo (IS o instant start): Este circuito enciende el tubo
dándole una descarga de alto voltaje entre los electrodos de la lámpara, sin
necesidad de arrancador.

Los balastros electrónicos operan con una tecnología totalmente diferente a
la utilizada por los balastros electromagnéticos, pues utilizan componentes

que permiten notables beneficios: larga vida, ahorro energético, bajos costos
de mantenimiento, menores niveles de ruido, temperaturas de operación más
bajas y menor peso de los componentes.
Balastros Ahorradores de Energía
Este tipo de balastro es más eficiente que los convencionales pues el diseño
utilizado les permite lograr menores pérdidas. Estos balastros funcionan con
fluorescentes convencionales o con fluorescentes ahorradores de energía.
Ejemplo:
Lámpara de 2 tubos T12 con balastro magnético a 120V consume 96W
1 lámpara de 2 tubos T8 con balastro electrónico a 120V consume 65.6W
ahorro 30W 68.33%.
Balastros de Emergencia
Estos dispositivos se colocan en las luminarias fluorescentes adicionales al
balastro normal, con el objetivo de que en el momento de fallar el suministro
de electricidad mantengan encendida la lámpara por un período de tiempo
apropiado; para concluir cualquier labor que se esté realizando o para evacuar
el lugar si fuera necesario.
Balastros de Alta Intensidad de Descarga (HID)
Los balastros para lámparas HID deben llevar a cabo dos funciones muy importantes:
1. Arrancar: Se aplica un alto voltaje a la lámpara a través de los gases iniciando
una descarga y sosteniendo el voltaje requerido para el calentamiento
de la lámpara.
2. Controlar o regular: Cuando el bulbo arranca, al no tener filamento que
ofrezca resistencia, la corriente eléctrica puede crecer hasta causar un accidente,
por lo cual es necesario la utilización del balastro como controlador
y regulador de la corriente eléctrica que pasa a través del arco.

longer life, energy savings, less maintenance costs, lower noise levels as well as
temperatures and lighter components.
At Havells SLI we have a wide range of ballasts, which are the devices in
charge of transforming energy to promote appropriate lamp operation.
Depending on their structure, they are categorized as magnetic or electronic,
or they may also be classified according to the type of lamp.
Ballasts functions are to:
Provide controlled energy to switch on lamps.
Control, regulate and send out the proper amount of electric power for
fluorescent lamps to work at its maximum efficiency.
Fluorescent Lamp Ballasts
A fluorescent cannot be directly attached to a power cord since each
fluorescent type needs starter voltage which depends on the lamps length,
diameter, construction and gas. Once the fluorescent starts, the ballast should
be stabilized.
Start Options:
Ballasts are designed for four types of start options, according to the
fluorescent:
1. PH or Pre-Heat: These fluorescents require their electrodes to pre-heat
before beginning the cycle and they need a starter.
2. QS or Quick Start: Like the previous one, this one needs its electrodes to
pre-heat; nevertheless, the ballast is designed to heat the lamp without a
starter.
3. RS or Rapid Start: They use low-voltage electrodes that are automatically
pre-heated by the ballast, so they do not need a starter. The ballast has a
heating coil that starts the lamp and keeps it running.
4. IS or Instant Start: This circuit lights the lamp by giving it a high-voltage
discharge between the lamps electrodes, without the assistance of a starter.
Energy Saving Ballasts
This type of ballast is more efficient than conventional ones since the design
achieves fewer losses. These ballasts work with conventional or energy saving
fluorescents.
Example:
Fixture with two T12 lamps with magnetic ballast for 120V consumes 96W
One fixture with 2 T8 lamps and electronic ballast for 120V consumes 65.6W
30W savings, 68.33%.
Emergency Ballasts
These devices are placed on fluorescent fixtures in addition to normal ballast.
The objective is to keep the lamp running to a degree for an adequate amount
of time in case of electric failure. This provides time to finish on-going tasks or
to evacuate the place if needed.
High-Intensity Discharge (HID) Ballasts
Ballasts for HID lamps must perform two very important roles:
1. Start: High voltage is applied to the lamps gas, which starts a discharge and
maintains the voltage required to heat the lamp.
2. Control or Regulate: When the Lamp starts, since it does not encounter
filaments to resist, electric power can develop and cause an accident.
Therefore, it is required to use the ballast as a controller in order to regulate
and control electric power flow throughout the arch.
Multi-Voltage Electronic Ballasts T5
Electric ballasts use a completely different technology than the one used by
the electromagnetic type of ballasts, since they use electronic components to
start the lamp and regulate its operation. Currently, new electronic ballasts

Difusores
Los difusores parabólicos representan la forma más sofisticada y con mayor
control de la precisión óptica disponible para luminarias fluorescentes. Su
principal característica es la de redirigir la luz generada por las lámparas fuera
del área de disconformidad visual de 60° a 90°.
ACRILICO PRISMÁTICO
Las funciones que cumple el difusor son las siguientes:
1 Ocultar la fuente de luz.
2 Controlar la luz en un área determinada.
3 Reducir los reflejos indeseados.
4 Brindar una apariencia agradable con un brillo reducido.
CUADRICULADO BLANCO
El estricto control en la dirección de la luz se logra debido a la forma de las paredes
verticales del difusor que actúan como pequeños reflectores dirigiendo la
luz en un área de trabajo de 0° a 45° donde se utiliza de manera más efectiva.
La inexistencia de luz sobre el ángulo de 45°, elimina los reflejos indeseados y
proporciona un excelente efecto visual.
Superficies y acabados
Los difusores parabólicos están disponibles en acabados especular y semi-especular.
Cada uno de ellos se comporta de manera diferente en lo que respecta
a distribución de luz, intensidad y fuente de brillo. En general los difusores más
oscuros son los de menor eficiencia con un V.C.P. (Probabilidad de Confort
Visual) marginal. El diseño básico de los difusores parabólicos provee un V.C.P.
superior por medio de un sofisticado diseño del contorno y colores claros.
Cuidado y manejo
El contacto con grasa y aceites generarán manchas en las superficie del difusor
muy difíciles de eliminar y muy visibles, situación que daña considerablemente
las características de distribución de luz además de la parte estética de la
luminaria. Es por éstas razones que los difusores deben de ser manipulados
con guantes limpios y secos y nunca tocarlos directamente con las palmas de
las manos. Instale los difusores cuando el lugar esté terminado y no durante la
construcción o el mantenimiento.

Angulo de apertura: ángulo horizontal en el cual el difusor no proyecta
luminosidad .

V.C.P.: probabilidad de Confort Visual es un nivel proyectado de confort visual
de la luz promediado en un porcentaje de 100 personas en un cuarto en un
rango de 0% (pobre) y 100% (excelente).
Eficiencia: cantidad de luz emitida por la luminaria en relación con las luz
generada por las lámparas.

Diffusers
Parabolic diffusers are the most sophisticated and highest optic precision
control available for fluorescents fixtures. Its main characteristic is to redirect
the light generated outside the visual disconformities area from 60° to 90°.

The role of the diffuser is to:
1 Conceal the source of light.
2 Control light in an specific area.
3 Reduce unwanted reflexes.
4 Provide a pleasant appearance and reduce brightness.
Strict light control is achieved through the diffuser’s vertical walls which work
as small reflectors directing the light in a work area from 0° to 45° where it can
be used more effectively.
The nonexistence of light upon a 45° angle eliminates unwanted reflexes and
provides an excellent visual effect.

Surfaces and Finishes
Parabolic diffusers are available in specular and semi-specular finishes.
Each one behaves differently according to the light intensity and source of
brightness. In general, darker diffusers are less efficient with a marginal V.C.P.
(Visual Comfort Probability). The basic design of parabolic diffusers provides a
superior V.C.P. through a sophisticated contour design.

Handling and Care
Contact with grease and oils will stain the diffuser’s surface, stains that are
highly visible and hard to get rid of. This will greatly affect the light distribution
characteristics and the aesthetic part. Therefore, diffusers should be handled
wearing clean and dry gloves and never be touched bare-handed. They
should be installed when the place is finished and not during construction or
maintenance operations.
