aire.
Your baby does not need a bath every day (2-3 times a week is enough). If your baby’s
skin is dry, try bathing less often. Wash your baby’s face and neck every day and cleanse
the diaper area with each change. Choose a bath time that is convenient for you. Select an
area that is warm and free from drafts.
Nunca deje a
Bath Time Safety
Safety is the most important feature. Gather everything you will need for the bath
beforehand such as washcloth, towels, baby soap or cotton balls. Never leave your baby
or child unattended, even for a second. Test the temperature of the water with your elbow.
The water should be warm, not hot.
Sponge vs. Tub
Give your baby sponge baths until the circumcision is healed and the umbilical cord is off.
Your baby may be bathed in the tub after this time. It is easier to use a small bathtub or
basin while your baby is small.
Cabello
Hair
Wash your baby’s hair and scalp as often as needed. Brush your baby’s hair with a soft
brush at least once a day to loosen any dry skin. This dry skin is also referred to as
“cradle cap.”
Ojos
Eyes
Wash your baby’s eyes before there is any soap in the water. Use a clean cloth or a cotton
ball and wash from the inside to the outer corner. Use a separate cotton ball or different
part of the cloth for each eye.
No use cotonetes. No intente limpiar
Ears
Wash the outer part of the ear with a soft cloth. Do not use Q-tips. Do not attempt to
clean the inside of your baby’s ears as you may push wax up against the eardrum. Be sure
to dry thoroughly behind baby’s ears.
Nariz
(Vea
la sección "Succionando".)
Nose
A bulb syringe may be used to clear mucus from your baby’s nose. (Refer to
“Suctioning.”)
Cara
Lave con agua limpia.
Face
Wash with clear water.
Cuello
Neck
Be careful to wash the creases in your baby’s neck and dry well.
Cuerpo
Limpie con un jabón suave. No olvide los pliegues en la piel. Evite usar aceites y talcos.
Body
Cleanse with a mild soap. Do not forget the folds of the skin. Avoid using oils and
powders. Some peeling is expected the first few days of life. Baby lotion may be helpful
for dry or peeling skin.
Genitales
Genitals
Change soiled diaper as soon as possible. Cleanse with water and mild soap after each
bowel and bladder movement. Ointments such as Desitin, A & D or Vaseline may be
helpful in preventing diaper rash.
sanado.
Males:
Circumcised Infants
See “Circumcision Care.” Give sponge baths until the circumcision is healed.
Lave
sólo la superficie.
Non-Circumcised Infants
Wash with every diaper change. Do not pull back the foreskin. Wash only the surface.
Females:
Gently spread labia apart. Wipe form front to back. Vernix (the white cream remaining in
the labia) does not have to be removed.
Fingernails
Keep clean and short. Your baby’s fingernails are easiest to trim when your baby is
sleeping. Use blunt tip nail scissors.
A Missouri state law requires that all newborns have blood tests to screen for certain
medical conditions.
1. PKU (Fenilcetonuria)
PKU (Phenylketonuria)
PKU is an uncommon disorder which leads to mental retardation if not treated. The
test can be done as early as the second or third day of life. The baby needs to have at
least 24 hours of breast feeding or formula feeding before the test is accurate.
2. Examen T4
T4 Test
This is a test to evaluate the function of the thyroid gland. If the thyroid gland is not
working properly, mental retardation or stunting of growth can occur.
3. Galactosemia
mental o muerte.
Galactosemia
This test determines if the baby’s system is able to utilize one of the sugars in milk. If
not treated early, liver damage, cataracts, mental retardation, or death can occur.
4. Talasemia Falciforme Beta+
6
Sickle Cell
This test can determine whether or not your baby carries the sickle cell trait and/or
certain other rare blood disorders.
Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia
This is a test to evaluate the secretion of enzymes needed to make cortisol. Cortisol is
a steroid hormone that has many functions including a role in blood sugar, body
fluids and electrolyte levels.
Blood for all of these tests is obtained from the infant by a heel stick, usually on the day
of discharge. In some cases a repeat test may be necessary.
All of these disorders can be detected early and treated to help prevent future problems. If
the screenings for these disorders are positive, your physician will do more tests. It is
very important to follow the physician’s advice.
Circumcision Pain Considerations
Circumcision is painful when done without pain medicine. There are pain medicines
available that are safe and effective. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends
that they be used to reduce pain from circumcision. Local anesthetics can be injected into
the penis to lower pain and stress in infants. There are also topical creams that can help.
Talk to your health care provider about which pain medicine is best for your son.
Problems with using pain medicine are rare and usually not serious. Additionally, nonmedication
pain relief measures will be used to help manage your baby’s pain. Following
the circumcision, your baby will receive Tylenol.
Existen dos (2) tipos de circuncisión.
There are two (2) types of circumcision.
a diez (5-10) días.
The Bell Circumcision
Involves leaving a plastic ring over the head of the penis. This ring will fall off in five
to ten (5-10) days. Do not use ointments with this type of circumcision.
The Mogan/Gomco Circumcision
Take three to five (3-5) days to heal. Apply Vaseline generously over the head of the
penis with each diaper change for 24 hours.
Give sponge baths until the circumcision is healed. The tip of the penis may have a
scabbed area and some pale yellowish drainage. Notify your baby’s physician of swelling,
bleeding, odor or if the baby is not urinating.
CUIDADO DEL BEBÉ QUE NO TIENE CIRCUNCISIÓN — UNCIRCUMCISED
CARE
8
There is no special care needed for your baby. Wash the penis with diaper changes. Do
not pull back the foreskin. It is not retractable until your son is about four (4) years old.
Your baby’s umbilical cord starts to dry as soon as the baby is born. The umbilical cord
should fall off in approximately two to three (2-3) weeks. Keep it clean, dry and exposed
to air.
• Wash your hands before touching the cord.
• Sponge bathe your baby until the cord has fallen off.
• Fold the diaper below the cord. Exposure to air will help the drying process.
• If the cord becomes soiled with urine or stool, clean it with warm water.
• When the cord falls off, there may be a small amount of bleeding.
• If there is a yellow-green drainage, foul odor or redness of skin near the cord, contact
your baby’s doctor.
• When you lay your baby down for sleep, place the baby on his or her back. Do not
put your baby down to sleep on his or her tummy. Let your baby have some “tummytime”
when awake.
• Mantenga los barandales arriba.
9
• Keep side rails up.
• Be sure bars are close enough so that your baby can’t slide through or get stuck (2-1/4
inches wide at most).
• Be sure the mattress fits snugly so your baby can’t slip between the mattress and the
sides.
• No utilice una almohada.
• Don’t use a pillow.
• Don’t use a harness or straps in the crib.
• Mobiles that hang by a string should be out of baby’s reach and should never be
strung across the crib.
• Don’t place toys or stuffed animals in the crib or bassinet with the newborn.
LLANTO — CRYING
Crying is normal. This is the baby’s only way to communicate needs. Cries may mean
your baby is hungry or needs a diaper change. Babies also cry when they are tired or need
burping. Try to calm your baby by meeting these needs first. Often times holding and
cuddling will comfort your baby. A newborn baby cannot be spoiled. Your baby will
learn to trust in your ability to meet his needs.
10
Some additional suggestions for calming your baby include:
da.
• Wrap your infant snugly in a receiving blanket. Many babies love the security this
provides.
• Offer your baby a pacifier. If you are breast feeding, let him suckle at the breast.
Babies are comforted through sucking.
• Ponga música o cántele a su bebé.
• Play music or sing to your baby.
• Try a swing, rocker, front pack or sling or a walk in the stroller. Babies love motion.
If your baby continues to cry this may mean he is sick or in pain. If the cries sound
painful or continue for long periods, remember to remain calm and call your health care
provider.
Your baby’s diaper needs to be checked frequently. It is not uncommon to use eight (8) to
twelve (12) diapers a day. Most newborns “wet” five to six (5-6) times each day the first
week and increase to six to ten (6-10) times thereafter.
The first stools called meconium are black, sticky and odorless. The next few days the
stools will change to greenish-black, to brown, to a brownish yellow. Breast fed infants
usually have yellow stools. Some babies have a bowel movement every day, others four
to six (4-6) times per day, and some infants have a bowel movement every two to three
(2-3) days. All of the patterns are normal. If stools are excessively watery, contain mucus,
or blood, notify your baby’s health care provider.
Change soiled diaper as soon as possible. Cleanse bottom from front to back with water
and mild soap to remove any urine or stool. This helps prevent diaper rash. Ointments
such as Desitin, A&D or Vaseline may also be helpful. Avoid the use of powder. Your
baby may breathe the powder into his or her lungs which may cause an infection.
Babies strain, grunt and become red in the face when they are having a stool. If your baby
seems to be working hard, you can bend the knees up to the tummy.
ALIMENTANDO A SU BEBÉ — FEEDING YOUR INFANT
Always wash your hands before feeding your baby.
Dando Pecho
Breast Feeding
Although breast feeding is a “natural process,” it requires learning and practice. Be
patient with yourself and your newborn. There is no set amount that the baby will take at
each feeding. Some days your baby may seem unusually hungry and want to nurse more
frequently. Your baby is probably getting enough milk if he is wetting at least six diapers
in a day, having at least three (3) bowel movements and eating eight to twelve (8-12)
times in 24 hours. Babies have a growth spurt at seven to ten (7-10) days and again when
they are 28-30 days old. Your baby will eat more often for a day or so, then return to a
regular pattern. If you are breast feeding, you will receive additional information.
Formula Feeding
Bottle fed infants need to eat every three to four (3-4) hours. Your baby should eat at
least six (6) times per day. Cuddling and close contact is necessary for normal growth and
development. When feeding, cradle your baby in your arms holding the head slightly
higher than the chest. You should never prop a bottle or leave your baby alone while
feeding. You may be advised by your health care provider to sterilize bottles and nipples
or to wash them thoroughly with hot soapy water.
Your baby’s doctor will tell you what type of formula to use. Formula is sold in three (3)
different preparations:
1. Lista para tomarse
Ready to Feed
2. Concentrada (agregar agua)
Concentrated (add water)
3. Polvo (agregar agua)
Powder (add water)
Prepare enough formula for twenty-four (24) hours following the instructions on the
formula label. Prepared formula or open cans must be refrigerated and used within 24-48
hours. Do not use well water for formula preparation. Formula should be at room
temperature or slightly warmer before being fed to your baby. Place the bottle in a
container of hot water for several minutes. Always test the temperature of the formula
before feeding. Never use a microwave for heating formula.
The amount of formula your baby takes will vary. Some babies require one to two (1-2)
ounces per feeding at first, others may require more. When your baby consistently
finishes his/her feedings he may be ready to have another ounce added to his bottle. Burp
your baby frequently during and after the feeding. Discard any unused formula after one
(1) hour. Do not save it for the next feeding.
Eructando
Burping
Burp your newborn during each feeding. Your baby will feel better and may be able to
eat more. If you are breast feeding, burp your baby when you change breasts. A bottle fed
baby may need burping after about every half-ounce of formula. Hold the baby’s belly
against your shoulder and gently pat his or her back for a few minutes. When your baby’s
done eating, try burping again. To burp your baby in a sitting position, place the baby on
your lap so he or she leans slightly forward. Support the baby’s chest and head with one
hand and pat or rub the back gently with your other hand.
What is pain?
Pain is an uncomfortable feeling associated with tissue damage. It is an early warning
sign of injury. All infants can feel pain. Since babies can’t talk, it may be difficult for
caregivers and parents to decide when babies are showing signs of pain. A baby’s
comfort level can be assessed by observing his responses on a regular basis, and more
frequently after painful events.
Sources of pain
In the hospital, a healthy newborn baby may have pain from minor procedures such as
medical tests, treatments, and after circumcision. Needles used to take blood samples
from the baby’s heel or vein may produce pain in the infant.
Measuring pain in babies
Measuring pain in babies is done by looking at changes in heart rate, breathing patterns
and facial expressions, listening to their cry, and looking at their movements. When your
baby is in pain, soothing techniques, medication, or both can be used for pain relief.
Cuando un bebé tiene dolor, puede notar:
When a baby is in pain, you may notice:
• Músculos faciales tiesos, ceja, barbilla o quijada fruncida
• Llanto fuerte y continuo
Loud continuous cry
• Irregular fast breathing, gagging or breath holding
piernas
• Tight leg and arm muscles, rapid movement of arms and legs
• Inquieto, pataleos
Restless, thrashing
Pain Relief Measures (non-medication)
We will observe your baby for any signs of pain on a regular basis and after every
procedure. Soothing techniques like rocking, holding, touching, swaddling, music,
suckling and talking to the baby will be used to relieve his/her pain. Parents can comfort
their child using these same comfort measures while in the hospital or at home. Sucrose
(concentrated sugar water) has been shown to decrease a baby’s pain during procedures
and may be given while the baby is in the hospital.
Medications for Pain Relief
Your baby’s doctor may order medication to relieve his/her pain. Different kinds of pain
medication are available. When you go home, you should not give your baby any
medication without checking with your baby’s doctor first.
Nuestra Meta
Our Goal
The health providers at the hospital take pain seriously. We will do our best to stop any
pain your baby is having. If you have questions about the pain your baby may experience,
please ask your baby’s nurse or doctor.
ICTERICIA — JAUNDICE
Jaundice is more common in breast fed babies. Here are a few things for you to know.
When your baby only drinks small amounts of breast milk, his/her bowels aren’t
moving and the bilirubin can’t be removed in the stools.
Doctors encourage continued and frequent breast-feeding (at least 8 to 10 times every
24 hours).
Giving your baby water, in addition to breast milk, will not decrease his/her bilirubin
level.
In some cases, your baby’s doctor may encourage supplementation with formula or
the temporary interruption of breast-feeding with substitution of formula.
If you are asked to use a different method of feeding for 1 to 2 days, continue to
pump every 3 hours and store your breast milk as your nurse has taught you.
Jaundice, in most instances, is normal, harmless and usually goes away by the tenth day
of life. If jaundice is severe, however, brain damage can occur. If your baby is beginning
to look jaundiced before your baby goes home from the hospital, a bilirubin level may be
drawn and a follow-up phone call or appointment with your baby’s doctor may be
scheduled for 2-3 days after discharge. It is important to keep this appointment. A repeat
bilirubin level may be drawn at this time.
If you notice any of the following signs after your baby is discharged home, you should
notify your baby’s doctor.
Baby’s skin is becoming yellow in color. The color change moves from head to toe,
so the infant with mild jaundice may look yellow only in the face while one with
severe jaundice will be yellow all over the entire body.
Poor feeding or lactation difficulties.
Changes in your baby’s behavior or decreased activity, including sleeping through 2
or more feedings.
White stools (yellow stools are normal for breast fed infants).
bebé sea puesto bajo luces especiales, llamadas "bililights" o "fototerapia".
hospital.
Jaundice is not a disease, but a sign. A small blood sample may be taken to measure your
baby’s bilirubin level. Your baby’s doctor will then decide if treatment is necessary.
Sometimes treatment requires the baby to be put under special lights, called “bililights”
or “photo therapy.” These lights will help the body remove the bilirubin. Dependent upon
your baby’s bilirubin level, bililights can be used in your home as well as the hospital.
If you have any questions or concerns, call your baby’s doctor.
CARACTERÍSTICAS DEL RECIÉN NACIDO — NEWBORN
CHARACTERISTICS
nacido.
Below is a list of normal characteristics you may notice in your newborn.
Ojos
Eyes
Your baby’s eyelids may be puffy or swollen for two to three (2-3) days.
The eyes may have blood-shot areas. This is normal and may clear within the first
month.
Most babies are born with blue/gray eye color. Your baby’s eye color will change to
the permanent color by eight months of age.
Infants often appear cross-eyed. As babies use their eyes, the eye muscles become
stronger and this will disappear.
Your baby sees things best 12-18 inches from their face.
Babies like to look at faces more than other things. Black and white patterns are their
second choice.
Milios
Van a
Milia
Milia are small white spots on the face, especially across the nose. They will go away in
about six (6) weeks without any special treatment.
Lanugo
Lanugo
Lanugo is a fine downy hair that is found on baby’s shoulders and back. It will go away
in about a week.
Vernix
El vernix es una substancia blanca quesosa. Sirve como un lubricante.
Vernix
Vernix is a white cheesy substance. It serves as a lubricant.
Breast Tissue
Breast tissue often appears swollen in both boys and girls. This swelling will decrease in
the first week.
Genitales
Genitals
Your baby’s genitals may also appear swollen because of mom’s hormones. The swelling
will disappear in the first two (2) weeks. Baby girls may also have vernix, mucus, or a
small amount of bloody discharge from the vagina. There is no need for extra care, just
wash from front to back with clear water at each diaper change.
Fontanelas - (espacios blandos)
Fontanels — (soft spots)
Your baby has two (2) fontanels on his head, one on top and a small one on the back. The
purpose of the fontanel is to allow the baby’s head to grow. Your baby’s brain will grow
quickly in the first two (2) years of life. The fontanel at the back will close at around two
to three (2-3) months of life and the fontanel on the top of the baby’s head will close
around 12-18 months of age. There is no need for special care of the fontanels.
Manos y Pies
Hands and Feet
Your baby’s hands and feet may have a bluish color. Babies aren’t able to control their
body temperature, so you may see this if the baby gets cold. Your baby may need
additional clothing or covers.
The nursery department provides hearing screening for every infant born at this hospital
as required by law. Your baby’s hearing will be screened using a quick, harmless and
painless method of assessing hearing.
You and your baby’s doctor will receive results of the screening. Your baby will either
pass the screening or will require further testing. It is unlikely that your baby has severe
hearing loss. However, if the results suggest that your baby has trouble hearing, it is
important that follow-up is obtained as soon as possible. Good hearing is extremely
important for the development of speech and language.
Passing the hearing screening shows that your baby hears at the time of the test. If at any
time you have concerns about your baby’s hearing, speech or language development,
consult your baby’s doctor and arrange to have a hearing evaluation.
For additional information, you may talk with your doctor, nurse or a hearing screen
lungs if the bottle is propped.
prevenir estrangulación.
Shorten curtain or window blind cords to prevent strangulation
Select toys that are too large to swallow, too tough to break, with no small parts and
no sharp points or edges.
Keep pins, buttons, coins, plastic bags and balloons out of baby’s reach.
Baby gates should be used at the top and bottom of all stairways.
Never leave a baby unattended with standing water nearby (i.e., a bucket of water, a
toilet with lid in the upright position, a pool, etc.).
Never leave a reclining chair in an open position or let a child play or jump on
recliner, as the baby may get their head trapped in opening.
FUMAR — SMOKING
Syndrome - SIDS).
Do not allow anyone to smoke around your baby. Babies who are around cigarette smoke
DORMIR — SLEEP
There are no rules for when a baby sleeps, or doesn’t. Your newborn may sleep for 16-18
hours a day, but he or she may not sleep for long stretches. You can expect several night
time feedings for awhile. Some babies may sleep through the night as early as 6 weeks,
while many do not reach that milestone until they are 5-6 months old or older.
You can sometimes adjust patterns of sleep to fit a night-day cycle. Try these tips.
At night, put your baby to sleep in a bassinet or crib. When your baby awakens, feed
and change him or her quietly. Keep lights dim and limit distractions so that your
baby will go back to sleep sooner.
During the day, put your baby in a cradle or infant seat to sleep. Wake your baby for
feedings, and talk and play with your little one. Make funny faces for your baby. The
longer your baby is awake during the day, the better he or she is likely to sleep at
night.
During the first weeks after birth, you may find it easiest if your baby sleeps in your room.
If you will rest better with baby in another room, that’s okay too. An electronic baby
monitor can help you hear whether your baby is awake. For safety reasons, your baby
should not sleep in the bed with you.
Here are some suggestions for helping your baby to fall asleep.
Make sure your baby is fed and has spent quiet time in your arms before being put to
bed.
Most babies like rhythmic motion. Rock your baby or gently push the cradle.
Try massaging your baby’s stomach and feet.
Sing softly or play lullaby tapes.
Begin to set a bedtime routine, such as bathing, reading, singing.
There may be times when your baby may act hungry and cry but just needs to suck.
Sucking may calm a fussy baby. Allow the baby to suck his or her fist, thumb or pacifier.
SUCCIONANDO DE LA NARIZ DE SU BEBÉ — SUCTIONING YOUR BABY’S
NOSE
The first few months of life, babies breathe through their noses. If your baby has a runny
nose, cough, or drainage in his or her nose, you may use a bulb syringe to remove it.
place the tip of the bulb syringe into one (1) nostril and slowly release your “squeeze”
allowing the syringe to fill with air.
Remove the syringe from the nose. Squeeze the bulb to remove any mucus into a
tissue.
Repeat with the other side of the nose.
4. Uste puede repetir si es necesario.
You may repeat if needed.
