ABSTRACTS: ZOOLOGY
Brighton, CO 80601, USA. .--I studied population fluctuations of seed-eating birds during three consecutive ears (1978-1981) at
three habitats along a topographic gradient in the Chihuahuan Desert. Shrub cover decreased from top of gradient towards low sites, known locally in northern
Mexico and southwestern United States as playas, whereas grass cover increased. Population fluctuations exhibited a similar pattern for the three habitats but were
different from year to year, mostly in relation to rainfall. In winter 1978-1979, after a long and plentiful rainy season, grasses produced large amounts of seeds
allowing the permanence of large flocks of granivorous birds in contrast to winter 1979-1980, when the lowest bird populations were recorded. Species richness,
i.e., overall number of species, was also higher in winter 1978-1979 than in winter 1979-1980, especially at the playa, where only the Black-throated Sparrow was
recorded. This is a resident species with a wide geographical and ecological distribution.
ECOLOGICAL STRATEGIES OF TWO SPECIES OF GROUND SQUIRREL IN THE BOLSON DE MAPIMI, MEXICO.
ESTRATEGIAS ECOLOGICAS DE DOS ESPECIES DE ARDILLAS TERRESTRES EN EL BOLSON DE MAPIMI. Elizabeth E. Aracon Pina, Centro
Regional Durango, Instituto de Ecologia, A.C., Apto. Postal 632, Durango, Dgo. 34000, Mexico.-- A seven-year population dynamics study was conducted in the
Bolson de Mapimi region in Durango, Mexico, on two ground squirrel species, Spermophilus spilosoma and S. mexicanus. Both species were severely affected by
drought throughout the study period. S. spilosoma had a wider distribution, increasing population numbers during wet years. Population growth was determined by
the number of established reproductive females. In offspring, there were a larger number of males than females. Home range was larger for this species when
compared to S. mexicanus that were concentrated in the desert “bajadas” with high prickly pear (Opuntia spp.) densities. Population densities of S. mexicanus were
dependant on S. spilosoma numbers. Reproductive female groups were more stable and offspring sex ratios were equal. Both species could be classified as K-type,
even though S. mexicanus tends to be more like an r-type species. Life cycles, reproductive rates and feeding habits are similar for both species, but apparently each
species has a different evolutionary trend. S. mexicanus is more restricted in terms of population dynamics, physiology and behavior.
PREDATOR-PREY RELATIONSHIP OF TWO RAPTORS IN THE BOLSON DE MAPIMI, DURANGO, MEXICO.
INTERACCION DEPREDADOR-PRESA EN EL BOLSON DE MAPIMI DEL DESIERTO CHIHUAHUENSE. Elizabeth Aragon Pina y Benjamin Castillo
Elias. Centro Regional Durango, Instituto de Ecologia, A.C., Apdo. Postal 632, Durango, Dgo. 34000, Mexico.--Predator-prey relationships were studied on two
raptor species: Great Horned Owl, Buto virginianus, and Barn Owl, Tyto alba, natives of the Bolson de Mapimí in the State of Durango, Mexico. Fecal samples
(n=209) were collected and analyzed to determine diet composition and preference for rodent species. Rodent availability was also determined using radius census
techniques. The Great Horned Owl was an opportunistic raptor including 11 rodent species as part of its diet. Feeding activities were concentrated on the desert
“bajadas”. The Barn Owl was more selective, including only six rodent species in its diet, and concentrating its feeding activities to open desert grassland areas.
Apparently, prey selection was determined by a diversity of rodent species, body size, habitat type, and vulnerability.
ECOLOGY OF THE KIT FOX, VULPES MACROTIS ZINSERI, AT THE BOLSON DE MAPIMI, DURANGO, MEXICO.
ECOLOGIA DE LA ZORRITA DEL DESIERTO, VULPES MACROTIS ZINSERI, EN LA RESERVA DE LA BIOSTERA DE MAPIMI, DURANGO,
MEXICO. Jorge Servin and Elias Chacon, Centro Regional Durango, Instituto de Ecologia, A.C., Apdo. Postal 632, Durango, Dgo., Mexico.--The Kit Fox, Vulpes
macrotis, is a small carnivor with a wide distribution from southern Canada to central Mexico. There are eight subspecies of kit fox. However, their taxonomic
status, phylogenetics, and distribution boundaries are not well determined. Vulpes macrotis zinseri, a native subspecies of the Bolson de Mapimi was studied to
determine habitat use, home range, feeding habits, and behavior. Research data would be used to establish conservation strategies, since this entity is an endangered
species protected by law.
nevadensis.
