ABSTRACTS: ECOLOGY
Bend region.
minckleyi, an endemic cichlid in Cuatro Cienegas, has a trophic polymorphisim. The two common morphs, (detritivore and molluscivore), differ in pharyngeal
tooth morphology. Diet studies suggest strong overlap between the morphs. We used stable isotopes to test whether the morphs have different diets. Stable isotopes
offer two advantages over diet studies by allowing for large non-destructive samples and providing a temporally integrated assessment of diet. We collected fish
from eight habitats and determined their morphology using an otoscope and took a small fin clipping for isotope analysis. Morphs differed in d13C, indicating that
they have different food sources, but did not differ in d15N, suggesting that they occupy similar trophic positions. Differences in isotope values among sites did not
correlate with the Hemichromis invasion.
Chihuahua-Ojinaga, C.P. 32900. Aldama, Chihuahua, México.--Information management takes on a crucial role in regions such as the Chihuahuan Desert. One
focus that can be adopted is the construction of an internet site oriented toward researchers, specialists, and the general public; it offers information services for the
area. Such an asset promotes intersectorial and multidisciplinary collaboration by enabling the exchange of information and opinions. In the long run, this exchange
is of vital importance to the development of projects and research programs. It will also promote conservation efforts by enabling residents of the Chihuahuan
Desert to acquire integral knowledge of their surroundings. The internet site thus promotes the sustainable use of resources and the harmonious development of
various sectors through academic information and human participation.
University, Las Cruces, New Mexico, and 2 Range Animal Ecology, New Mexico State University, Las Cruces, New Mexico.—Honey Mesquite, Prosopis
glandulosa Torr., is a major unwanted plant in the Southwestern USA and northern Mexico. Since mesquite has low forage value for livestock, its control may be
required to improve forage production on degraded rangelands. This study evaluated the herbage responses to soil depth (shallow 41 cm) and
the relationship between forage production and three levels of mesquite (based on canopy cover). The results indicate that there was a main effect of soil depth on
black grama production, with shallow soils being more productive than deep soils. Similarly, mesquite canopy cover was much higher in deep soils across the study
area. Soil depth had more influence on forage production than mesquite canopy cover at least at levels below 17%.
Potosí, Altair 200 Fraccionamiento del Llano, San Luis Potosí, San Luis Potosí, Mexico. .--In the Potosi-Zacatecas highlands the use
of renewable resources is diverse in space and time. Harvestable crop production takes place in the plains (irrigating with underground water or rain in situ),
lowlands (utilizing runoff water), and in alluvial plains (using temporal mountain runoff from creeks). Animal production in the region is either extensive (in
rangelands on plains or in mountain grasslands) or intensive (principally en plain areas). Vegetation is collected for selling (Agave lecheguilla, Euphorbia
