The mainobjective of this survey was to evaluate the indicators and t<strong>en</strong><strong>de</strong>ncies ofdiseases of male and female calves and the reasons for such loses during theperiod of 2000 – 2009, in a eastern province of Cuba. The data werecompiled from information provi<strong>de</strong>d by Vet Medicine Institute provinceHeadquarters and the Meteorology C<strong>en</strong>ter in the province. The g<strong>en</strong>eralmortality data were analyzed and for loses types in the period and in theyears,it was used the test hypothesis, proportions comparison for comparingrainfalls and low rain in periods of less rainfall and with an increase inrainfall, thus the ones of natural mortality among the ones sucking and thoseat weaning. It was also analyzed the <strong>de</strong>ath t<strong>en</strong><strong>de</strong>ncy ;normal distributionwas verified, variance homog<strong>en</strong>eity and the lack of data autocorrelation,using the non-lineal mo<strong>de</strong>l: y = a + bx + cx² (up to 6). It was done acomparison of <strong>de</strong>aths per cathegories by means of a simple distributionvariance analysis, method of Kruskal-Wallis, and of causes,using the multipleproportions analysis and x.2 test. The systems Excel 2003, Stagraphics plus5.1, Statistic Ver. 8 para Windows 2003 ure used. The male and femalecalves resulted of higher weight in cattle mortality exhibiting hihgest figuresto those normally accepted,they were significatively greater during the lessrainy period, that is why malnutrition became the main resultKey words: Mortality, Calves, Causes.IntroducciónLos terneros constituy<strong>en</strong> el elem<strong>en</strong>to principal <strong>en</strong> el aum<strong>en</strong>to <strong>de</strong>l índice <strong>de</strong>natalidad y disminución <strong>de</strong> la <strong>mortalidad</strong>, fundam<strong>en</strong>tales para lograrincrem<strong>en</strong>tos <strong>de</strong> la masa vacuna, por lo que la crianza <strong>de</strong> éstos, sanos y bi<strong>en</strong><strong>de</strong>sarrollados para aum<strong>en</strong>tar y reemplazar a los adultos, es tarea principal<strong>de</strong> cualquier explotación gana<strong>de</strong>ra (1). En trabajos realizados <strong>en</strong> Cuba sehan reportado como principales <strong>causas</strong> <strong>de</strong> muertes <strong>en</strong> terneros, lossacrificios; trastornos digestivos; la Salmonelosis; y trastornos respiratorios(1); así como los problemas nutricionales; trastornos metabólicos yacci<strong>de</strong>ntes (2).Según Balances Nacionales <strong>de</strong>l IMV (3), <strong>en</strong>tre los años 2003 y 2009murieron <strong>en</strong> Cuba, 420 328 terneros (as), para una tasa <strong>de</strong>l 10.38 %. Laprovincia objeto <strong>de</strong> nuestro trabajo se <strong>de</strong>stacó negativam<strong>en</strong>te <strong>en</strong> el país<strong>Indicadores</strong>, <strong>t<strong>en</strong><strong>de</strong>ncia</strong> y <strong>causas</strong> <strong>de</strong> <strong>mortalidad</strong> <strong>en</strong> terneros <strong>de</strong> una provincia ori<strong>en</strong>tal <strong>de</strong> Cuba (2000 -2009).http://www.veterinaria.<strong>org</strong>/revistas/redvet/n101010/101005.pdf2
