WELCOME
Llegó la época donde las gratas temperaturas comienzan
a asomar, atrás van quedando de a poco, muy de a poco,
aquellos días oscuros y fríos del invierno para dar paso a un
verano algo atípico para Chile, con intensas lluvias durante
octubre y noviembre y un clima más bien tropical al que ya nos
estamos acostumbrando.
Pasó rápido el año y tuvimos grandes satisfacciones, como el
Chile campeón del fútbol en Copa América, varias y destacadas
visitas y artistas internacionales y, como siempre, muchas
actividades que enriquecen sus experiencias de viajes, una de
las características de los Hoteles de Starwood.
Para esta nueva edición de verano, queremos que se relajen
y viajen junto a nosotros por esta guía de placeres que hemos
preparado y que los llevará a recorrer Chile con impresionantes

The season of pleasant temperatures is approaching, and the
dark and cold days of winter are gradually giving way to a bit of
an atypical summer for Chile, with intense rain during October
and November and climate that is more tropical than we are
used to.
The year went by quickly, and we had many successes, such
as Chile’s triumph in the Copa América soccer championship,
varied noteworthy international visitors including artists, and,
as always, many activities that enrich your travel experiences,
which is one of the characteristics of Starwood Hotels.
For this new summer edition, we want you to relax and travel

El sur de Chile tiene un clima húmedo, extensos bosques, cadenas
montañosas y variados lagos. La abundante presencia de volcanes
permite valles fértiles donde el desarrollo de la agricultura y ganadería
toma fuerza. Desde el paralelo 41ºS hacia el sur, la Patagonia irrumpe
con un relieve erosionado fuertemente a causa de las glaciaciones.
Tanto el archipiélago Patagónico y los Andes Patagónicos con sus
montañas de cumbres caprichosas, como Torres del Paine, nos
seducen con su dramática belleza.
Southern Chile has a humid climate, extensive forests, along
with mountain ranges and a variety of lakes. The numerous active
volcanoes have helped create fertile valleys, ideal for the development
of agriculture and livestock farming. From the 41ºS parallel to the
south, Patagonia spreads out with a relief heavily extensively molded
by the movement of vast glaciers. The Patagonian archipelago and
Andes mountains with their capricious summits, such as the Torres
del Paine, will seduce you with their dramatic beauty.

GlaciarGeikeGlaciar
Es el más austral y uno de los mayores glaciares del Campo
de Hielo Sur. Está ubicado en los límites del Parque Nacional
Torres del Paine. Tiene 32 km. de largo y una superficie de
331 km 2 , desembocando en el lago del mismo nombre. El color
del hielo se debe a la antigüedad del glaciar y a la gran presión
ejercida sobre las partículas de agua.
The furthest south and one of the largest glaciers of the
Southern Ice Fields. It is located on the edge of the Torres del
Paine National Park. Around 32 km long and with a surface area
of 331 km2, it flows into the lake bearing the same name. The
color of the ice is due to the age of the glacier and the huge
pressure exerted on the water particles.

Las costas son muy disímiles, dependiendo si están hacia
el océano Pacífico o al continente. La interior está poblada
por ciudades como Quemchi, Castro, Chonchi, las cuales se
dedican a la pequeña agricultura o pesca. La costa oeste está
prácticamente deshabitada, pero crece en los acantilados un
bosque siempre verde con características de “selva valdiviana”.
The coasts of this island are very different, depending on
whether they are facing the Pacific or the continent. In the
interior you’ll find municipalities such as Quemchi, Castro and
Chonchi, all dominated by small-scale agriculture and fishing.
The west coast is virtually uninhabited, characterized by
evergreen “Valdivian” forests stretching out from the cliff tops.

RíoPueloRiver
Nace en el lago del mismo nombre en Argentina. Tiene un
hermoso color verde debido a que las aguas, de origen glaciar,
acarrean sedimentos en suspensión. Sus playas, remansos y
correntadas favorecen la llegada de truchas, por lo que se han
instalado varios lodges de pesca deportiva en el sector entre El
Salto y el lago Tagua Tagua.
Fed by the lake bearing the same name in Argentina, this river
has a beautiful green hue, thanks to its glacial origin and the
sediments suspended in the waters. Its beaches, pools and
currents are regularly visited by trout, which is why numerous
fishing lodges have been installed in the zone between El Salto
and Lake Tagua Tagua.

CordónCastilloMountain range
El intenso colorido de las lengas transforma por completo el
paisaje. En el otoño, las hojas de este árbol cambian su color
verde oscuro por este vibrante tono rojo-morado. Sus raíces
crecen lateralmente, permitiendo su desarrollo en terrenos
rocosos o volcánicos, con muy escasa materia vegetal. Gracias
a ello se le ve trepada por diversas laderas.
The intense color of the lenga beech trees completely
transforms the landscape. In the fall, the leaves of this tree
transform from dark green to a vibrant purple-red. Its roots grow
laterally, allowing the trees to take hold on rocky and volcanic
terrain with very little plant material. Consequently it’s common
to see such forests covering the mountainous slopes.

RíoRubensRiver
Este paisaje de estepa patagónica se encuentra en la Región
de Magallanes, en la vertiente oriental de la cordillera de Los
Andes y donde corre un afluente del río Rubens que nace en
Argentina. La geografía se caracteriza por sus llanos suaves
y ondulados, donde la lenga crece formando bosques puros,
alternando con grandes praderas.
This Patagonian steppe landscape is located in the Magallanes
region, on the eastern slopes of the Andes Mountains, and
dissected by a tributary of the Rubens River, the source of
which is in Argentina. The geography is characterized by soft,
undulating plains, partly covered in pristine forests of lenga
beech that alternate with vast stretches of grassland.

FisuraCaulleFissure
Esta fisura volcánica, de 16 kms. de extensión, está compuesta
por domos, conos piroclásticos y flujos de lava. Se desarrolla
al sur del lago Maihue, entre los volcanes Carrán y Puyehue,
todos ubicados en la Región de Los Lagos. Su actual extensión
se debió a la última erupción ocurrida en 1960, dos días
después del gran terremoto de Valdivia.
This volcanic fissure that stretches for almost 16 km., consists
of domes, pyroclastic cones and lava flows. It first appears to
the south of Lake Maihue, between the Carrán and Puyehue
volcanoes, all located in the Los Lagos Region. Its current size
is due to the last eruption that took place in 1960, two days after
the colossal Valdivia earthquake.

TorresdelPaine
Reserva Mundial de la Biósfera por la UNESCO. Su hito es el
impresionante nudo de montañas formado hace 12 millones de
años. Este deja atrás la estepa para subir bruscamente de los
50 metros por sobre el nivel del mar hasta los 3.050 en el punto
más alto. Otros lugares de interés son los lagos y lagunas de
agua muy azul donde, en días soleados, las montañas quedan
reflejadas.
A UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, this landmark consists
of an impressive mountain range formed 12 million years ago.
Leaving behind the adjacent steppes, it rises sharply from 50
meters a.s.l. to 3,050 meters at its tallest peak. Other attractions
are the lakes and lagoons of crystalline, blue waters, where on
sunny days you’ll find the mountains reflected.

En la mañana del 15 de octubre de 1970 se inauguró Sheraton Santiago
Hotel & Convention Center y, hasta el día de hoy, sus 379 habitaciones,
las cuales actualmente están siendo renovadas, reciben a
las más importantes visitas del mundo social, artístico, político, aristocrático
e intelectual, tanto nacional como internacional que llegan
a Chile.
Con el paso de los años, Sheraton fue cautivando a cada uno de
sus huéspedes. Su personal altamente calificado, fina gastronomía,
gimnasio con la última tecnología, una amplia piscina al aire libre y
una interior temperada, un moderno centro de negocios equipado

On the morning of 15th October 1970, the doors were first opened of
the Sheraton Santiago & Convention Center, and right up until today,
its 379 rooms (currently being renovated), receive the most important
visitors from the worlds of the arts, politics, aristocracy, and academia,
from both Chile and those from abroad arriving in this city.
Over the passing years, the Sheraton has captivated each one of its
guests. Its highly qualified staff, fine dining facilities, state-of-the-art
fitness center, large outdoor and heated indoor pools, a modern business
center, equipped with the necessary infrastructure, are all constantly
evolving to meet the needs of our guests.

Por la variedad de sus atractivos, Viña del Mar es considerada la capital
turística de Chile, donde destaca la belleza del borde costero.
Desde fines del siglo XIX que la sociedad santiaguina se traslada a disfrutar
de las bondades de Viña del Mar. Época donde los trajes de baño de los
hombres eran mamelucos a listas de colores y los de las damas, azules, rojos
o blancos. Por la tarde, era costumbre los paseos bordeando donde hoy se
emplaza el hotel Miramar, que eran verdaderos desfiles de lujo. Ya caída la
noche, era un imperdible la reunión en el Gran Hotel o en el Club de Viña.
Así, Viña del Mar fue estableciendo su estilo de vida, siendo lo que se llamó
la “belle époque” chilena.

Because of the variety of its attractions, Viña del Mar is considered the tourist
capital of Chile, and is famous in particular for the beauty of its shoreline.
The citizens of Santiago have been making their way to this coastal resort in
order to enjoy the benefits of Viña del Mar since the late nineteenth century.
In that epoch, the men wore colorful swimsuits, while the ladies were
garbed in blues, reds and whites. In the afternoon, it was customary to take

Hace diez años, en Viña del Mar, un día de diciembre, abrió sus
puertas por primera vez Sheraton Miramar Hotel & Convention Center.
Bautizado por la prensa del momento como “La Perla del Pacífico”,
este moderno y lujoso edificio de imponentes dimensiones, al que
sus creadores decidieron darle la forma de un crucero como una
manera de incorporarse al paisaje marino, está ubicado en una de las
zonas más privilegiadas del borde costero viñamarino, rodeado de

En esa época solía ir solo o acompañado de amistades,
comprar unas carnes y no llevar nada más

para cocinar el producto, cualquier artilugio era
válido desde un alambrado, rama, chapa… hasta

salía bien y otras veces no nos quedaba más que

In the southern part of my country, Villa la Angostura,
in Neuquén. It has lakes, mountains and oh so
much nature. I used to go alone or with a few friends
and buy some meat and take only that and a few
beers. We’d find a way to cook, any supplies would

We would make a fire with stones. Sometimes
it came out well and others we would just have to

The happiness of the people was impressive. It is
surrounded by pure simplicity. Vanautu Island wins
the prize for most extreme. One day at a competition
among chefs from different islands, they gave
us the test of using the ingredients from a mystery
box. To our surprise, there was a giant bat inside.
There was nothing to do but open up our imagination
with the traditional “kava” drink. And suddenly,

Al oriente de Santiago, casi a los pies de la Cordillera de Los Andes,
está ubicado este gran parque que ofrece a quien lo visita tres
alternativas de senderos, todos ellos bien equipados y debidamente
señalizados. El más corto es “Canto del agua”, seguido en longitud
por “Los peumos” y, luego, por “Saltos de Apoquindo”. En ellos, se
puede disfrutar de la naturaleza, de la vista hacia el valle, el aire puro,
de la fauna, de las zonas de descanso, de la aventura de pasar por
puentes colgantes y la visión del agua cayendo desde la altura. El
deportista Felipe Duarte aconseja recorrer este hermoso parque
porque, además de ser un lugar muy bien cuidado, “allí uno se inserta
en la precordillera andina y se olvida rápidamente que se está tan
cerca de la ciudad, del ruido y de la contaminación”, señala.

Esta pequeña cumbre, ubicada en la zona oriente de la capital, ha
sido por décadas una de las rutas clásicas de trekking, tanto para los
que se inician en esta actividad como también para los deportistas
más experimentados. Uno de estos últimos, Luis Herrera, recomienda
esta alternativa de la comuna de Lo Barnechea porque otorga una
panorámica “espectacular del Valle del Arrayán”. En invierno, además,
la visión de las cumbres nevadas y del Santuario de la Naturaleza
constituye una experiencia maravillosa. Si se tiene suerte, los senderistas
pueden ver cóndores en su característico vuelo en círculos.

La exposición original fue cancelada a causa del “Golpe de Estado”
de 1973. Después de 40 años se abrió “La exposición pendiente

celebran los 25 años del restablecimiento de relaciones diplomáticas
entre México y Chile.

Corría los años 40 cuando en la calle Ricardo Cumming nace
“Los Buenos Muchachos”. Lo que comenzó artesanalmente,
donde las tertulias, los naipes y la buena conversación
eran acompañados con platos caseros y chicha de Villa
Alegre, fue creciendo hasta hacerse conocido en el
círculo de la bohemia de escritores, políticos, periodistas
e intelectuales que disfrutaban de largas conversaciones
hasta la madrugada, junto a algún buen mosto y humeantes
perniles.
Hoy día, Los Buenos Muchachos es sinónimo de la típica
picada santiaguina que no querrá perderse. En su menú
encontrará la comida tradicional chilena, parrilladas,
arrollados, pescados, mariscos y pastas, sin olvidar sus
postres caseros y su exquisita y extensa carta de vinos. En
las noches la velada es acompañada por espectáculos de
música folklórica y su salón se convierte en una entretenida
gran pista de baile.
It was back in the 1940s in Ricardo Cumming Street when
the “Los Buenos Muchachos” (Goodfellas) eatery first
opened its doors. What started as a more homely venture,
in which gatherings, card games and good conversation
were accompanied by homemade dishes and ‘chicha’
(a fermented artisanal beverage) brewed in Villa Alegre,
has since become the favorite haunt of bohemian writers,
politicians, journalists and intellectuals who enjoy long
conversations until the sun comes up, accompanied by a
good wine and steaming hams.
Today, Los Buenos Muchachos is synonymous with Santiago’s
traditional, not-to-be missed eateries. On its menu you’ll find
traditional Chilean dishes, barbecues, meat rolls, seafood
and pasta dishes, not to mention their homemade desserts
and exquisite and extensive wine list. At night the evening is
accompanied by performances of local folk musicians while
the floor is cleared of chairs and tables and fills with the
merriment of dancers.

BALI HAI
Una hilera de moais en el corazón de Santiago indica, entre madera
y paja, que la Isla de Pascua también se puede admirar sin salir de
la ciudad. El restaurante Bali Hai es un pedazo de la Polinesia en

En el año 2003 adquiere el restaurant el empresario
Ricardo Queirolo. Desde entonces ha conservado no sólo
el estilo, sino también la tradición de la degustación de
unas ricas ostras junto a una oportuna copa de vino.
Ya son tres generaciones quienes han degustado lo mejor
de los productos de las costas chilenas, como sus machas
a la parmesana, langostas, camarones, choritos, gambas,
congrio dorado, albacora, calamares y una larga carta que
trae el mar a su mesa.
Viva la magia entre estas paredes de 125 años y donde
la tradición de la buena cocina y la mezcla exquisita de
sabores e historia, demuestra que Ostras Azócar no es
sólo un restaurant más, sino un punto de encuentro entre

Located in the historic Yungay neighborhood of Santiago, Ostras
Azócar is a traditional restaurant that has been serving locals
and foreign visitors for the last 70 years.
In 2003, the restaurant was taken over by businessman
Ricardo Queirolo. Since then he has preserved not only
the style but also the tradition of tucking into some wellprepared
oysters accompanied by a fine wine.
