Director Ejecutivo
significa US$ 6.000 millones año a año que vamos a

NUEVOS SOCIOS
CONOCIENDO A NUESTROS SOCIOS
Christian Evans
GERENTE GENERAL
secretaria@eolico.cl

Executive Director
NCRE Sector: Promoting a supplementary local industry for the benefit of Chile
During the second semester of 2013, a joint study
between NRDC and ACERA was published, called
“Economic Benefits of Non-Conventional Renewable
Energies in Chile”. This analysis, elaborated by PwC at
the request of both organizations, sought to quantify
the impact of Non-Conventional Renewable Energies
(NCRE) in the Chilean economy, based on the Gross
Domestic Product and job creation.
With the assumptions used in this study -which in the
light of the current sector’s reality seem very
conservative-, the consulting company concluded that
Chile “may capture important economic and social
benefits by achieving a scenario of greater penetration
of NCRE sources”. These economic benefits were
valued at 1,600 million dollars in a fifteen-year period
(2013 to 2028).
Four years after this report was published, and after the
results of the last energy tender for distributing
companies were known, where NCRE’s prices took a
leading part, the Minister of Finance, Rodrigo Valdés
declared -justifiably- that the effect of the low prices
achieved would mean a possible increase of 2.5% in
the potential Chile’s GDP. “This means 6,000 million
dollars every year of greater productive activity, of
greater production”, he pointed out.
Even though the economic contribution is crucial, it is
not the only way the NCREs may contribute to support
the country’s development.
Chile’s natural advantages in NCRE resources may be
used to foster the development of a supplementary
local industry, with domestic added value, which would
optimize the costs of these technologies in the country,
as well as support the internationalization of a supply
of goods and services related to this sector.
To do this, State support seems a necessary condition
if international experiences are analyzed. This support
already exists in Chile, and it takes the form of the
initiatives of the Solar Energy Research Center
(SERC), the Solar Strategic Program (PES), the Marine
Energies Research and Information Center (MERIC),
the Los Andes Geothermal Excellence Center (CEGA)
and the Solar Energy Technologies Center
(FCR-CSET).
In ACERA we are sure that the work of these research
and development centers is a unique opportunity for
Chilean companies and entrepreneurs to find niches for
new and more efficient services and products for the
NCRE industry.
This is an invitation to join an industry expanding not
only in our country, but at a regional and worldwide
level, and where Chile seems to have a rare
opportunity -as seldom- of adding as a principal actor
to one of the main technological development currents
in the world.
NEWS
ACERA LANDED IN IQUIQUE FOR AN NCRE REGIONAL
SEMINAR
The Second NCRE Regional Seminar was carried out in the I Region of
Tarapaca, aimed at local authorities and the civil society. The activity was
sponsored by the Mining Company Doña Ines de Collahuasi and the Ministry
of Energy, and was attended by high authorities of the zone, including the
Energy Seremi, Hector Derpich, the Regional Director of the Superintendency
of Electricity and Fuel (SEC), Ana Lara, the Regional Director of the
Environmental Assessment Service (SEA), Pedro Valenzuela, in addition to a
high participation of the civil society. The Energy Seremi, Hector Derpich,
highlighted the importance of carrying out this kind of activities in the region,
taking into account its high potential in NCREs. As he pointed out, “we can
change the face of the Tarapaca Region by means of energy policies, make
this transformation productive, and improve our people’s life quality. In this
sense, ACERA’s work is fundamental, for the promotion and broadcasting of
these activities is crucial for attaining our goals”.
in the country, as well as to train professionals in this subject, and to generate
services and projects of this kind related to other sectors of the domestic
economy. In the activity, which involved the participation of the Ministry of
Economy, Luis Felipe Cespedes, the Ministry of Energy, Maximo Pacheco,
and the Vice President of Corfo, Eduardo Bitran, the details of the program
were presented: a plan of 50 projects and a budget of US$800 million, which
would be provided in equal parts by the public and the private sectors. The
program seeks to use solar radiation in order to address the need of providing
efficient power solutions to increase the competitiveness of other national
industries.
NEW MEMBERS
MEET OUR MEMBERS
Christian Evans
GENERAL MANAGER
secretaria@eolico.cl
Christian is Chilean, married, and the General Manager of Consorcio Eólico.
He is a Public Accountant and Auditor, was born in Madrid, and has lived in
the USA and in Brazil. He has experience as an executive in
Telecommunications and Real Estate sectors, and in the last 10 years in the
NCRE.
What products or services does your company deliver and to what kind(s) of
NCREs?
Consorcio Eólico is a wind project developer in the southern part of Chile, with a
strong presence in the 8th and 9th regions. We develop projects from Greenfield
until they are ready to be sold to operators or investors in the sector.
Which have been the latest new services or changes introduced by your
Company?
We have seen the need to strengthen the relationship between projects and
communities, because of economic, ethical and risk reasons. Our current
community staff has grown not only due to the size of our portfolio, but also to
the level of depth required by this work.
What are the main projects -or themes- you have been recently working on
concerning NCRE or the environment? In case they are generation plans, where
are the located and which are their main characteristics?
We have a portfolio of about 1000MW in different development stages, among
which the San Gabriel, Tolpan, Los Olmos and Mesamavida projects must be
pointed out. All of them are able to provide sustainable energy, at a low cost and
for many years.
Which elements characterize and/or distinguish your company?
We avoid non-competitive projects and give special attention to our relationship
with the actors involved, whether communities, authorities or owners. We also
have the advantage of having our headquarters in Concepcion, which allows us to
attend the requirements of these actors in less time than our competitors.
How important is NCRE participation in the Chilean electric system?
We consider it is vital. Compared to thermal generation, NCREs are cheaper,
environmentally friendly and can commit to a price which will remain stable in
time. We believe that in the not too distant future no more thermal plants will be
built, and they will die out naturally.
Why would you recommend being an ACERA member?
We have accompanied ACERA since the times where it was considered that Chile
could not allow companies such as Consorcio Eolico, since we were a luxury
subsidized by developed countries. ACERA has played a key role in clearing the
way for the sector that will be in charge of cleaning the carbon footprint of this
industry and of our country.
Rodrigo Sáez Rojas
GENERAL MANAGER
info@enorchile.cl
Rodrigo is Chilean, married and has two children. He is an Electronic Civil
Engineer from the U.T.F. Santa María and has three master degrees in
business and energy economy. He has been in the energy business for 17
years, 12 as General Manager of EnorChile. In addition, he has also been
ACERA’s director for the last two years.
What products or services does your company deliver and to what kind(s) of
NCREs?
We have three business areas in EnorChile: power supply to free customers,
technical-economical operation of generation plants, and remote operation of
renewable plants. All of them seek to attend jointly the specific requirements of
our customers.
Which have been the latest new services or changes introduced by your
Company?
We are developing an each time more specialized service for remote operation of
renewable generation plants, with an attractive infrastructure for our customers
and their stakeholders. This has turned us into one of the leading operators of
renewable energies in Chile, and the leader company in solar power operation.
What are the main projects -or themes- you have been recently working on
concerning NCRE or the environment? In case they are generation plans, where
are the located and which are their main characteristics?
Since late 2015 we have been working on the development and implementation
of a web report system and iOS applications which allow obtaining all the
information on plants operated by Enorchile, as well as an historic report of
works, failures and charge control of the NCRE plant.
Which elements characterize and/or distinguish your company?
The main differentiating features are our capability to identify new related
business niches, the honesty in dealing with stakeholders and businesses with
customers.
How important is NCRE participation in the Chilean electric system?
Renewable energies will be the primary sources of power generation in the not
too distant future. This implies great challenges in training qualified staff and the
development of technologies, but it also represents opportunities for those who
take part in this industry.
Why would you recommend being an ACERA member?
It is “THE” instance to include or align the interests of companies that are many
times synergetic -other times competitive- but where we can exchange ideas,
join forces, and finally help to boost the market growth of renewable energy
generation.
