‹ Buscar con la mirada el Belfort, de 83 metros de alto y 42 campanas, resulta de gran ayuda para llegar al corazón de Brujas: las plazas Markt y Burg, donde se concentran los edificios gubernamentales y donde aún se organizan mercados de alimentos y flores que reviven el ambiente de hace siglos. Las calles adoquinadas y las decenas de puentes (brugge en flamenco) conducen hasta Rozenhoedkaai, un viejo muelle de mercancías en el que ahora atracan barcas de paseo. Es difícil resistirse a las tentaciones de las chocolaterías artesanas mientras se camina por la bucólica calle Groenerei o por la Langestraat camino de la Kruispoort, la única puerta medieval de la ciudad que se mantiene en pie. Los tres grandes molinos de viento que se ven desde la puerta fueron construidos simbólicamente para recordar el lugar donde esta ciudad milenaria tuvo sus murallas. LOS GUISANTES DE GANTE Gante, cuna de Carlos V, se localiza a media hora en tren de Brujas. Su núcleo medieval se concentra en el barrio de Patershol, habitado por artesanos en la Edad Media, magistrados en los siglos xvii y xviii, y obreros durante la Revolución Industrial. Ahora estas calles son el mejor sitio para conocer la gastronomía local y probar el waterzooi (pollo y verduras) o los kroakemandels, guisantes fritos servidos en cucuruchos de papel. BRUJAS El río Dijver ha sido durante siglos la principal vía para transportar mercancías hasta el mar del Norte. DELICIAS DE CACAO La pasión belga por los bombones tiene su origen en 1880.
