PRIVATE NATURE RESERVE OF PUNTA PATIÑO DARIEN, PANAMA
RESERVA NATURAL PRIVADA PUNTA PATIÑO DARIÉN, PANAMÁ
The Private Nature Reserve of Punta Patiño was
created in 1992 as part of National Association
for the Conservation of Nature (ANCON) mission
to protect Panama’s natural resources for future
generations to enjoy. It is the largest private
natural reserve in Panama and covers nearly
30,000 hectares in the region of Darién. It is a
mosaic in which there are forests and coasts,
with small areas of grassland, plantations, crop
stubble and human settlements on what was
once the largest cattle ranch in the country
between the 1960s and 1970s.
The nature reserve biodiversity is exceptional. Thanks
to its location in Darién, the region with the richest
flora and fauna in Panama, this private nature reserve
facilitates the establishment of biological corridors for
conservation to the other protected areas of Darién.
Punta Patiño plays an important role in the protection
of mangroves, cliffs, beaches along the gulf coast
of San Miguel to the highest point of the Tacarcuna
mountain - the highest in central and eastern Panama
- and the seasonal and semi-deciduous forests of the
lowlands of Darién. Patiño biodiversity includes over
one thousand species of flora and nearly 500 species
of fauna, many of them endemic or classified endangered
at national level. A lot of information about the
species of flora found in Patiño is publicly available,
either about their ecology or about their traditional
uses in the Darién or other parts of Panama and the
Americas. The complementary information on some
of the species listed in this catalogue would not have
been possible without the support from GIZ to this
publication.
Another key factor to the diversity of Patiño is the
climate. While along the coastline of the reserve there
is a long dry season, in the mountainous ridges of the
Bagre and Bernal which, mark the limits of the Mogue
River watershed and the private nature reserve, there
is a more humid climate and a dry season less intense
than on the coast.
In addition to its biological diversity, Darién has also
a rich cultural heritage. Different ethnicities and
cultures coexist, including the Guna, Emberá and
Wounaan indigenous groups, Afro-descendants
brought during the colonial period, rural inhabitants
from inland areas, new white and mestizo settlers
from the central and Western provinces of Panama,
and the recent arrival of migrants displaced by
