RIAL
CONOCE
A NUESTROS
SOCIOS

CHILE WOKE UP: THE IMPORTANT CONTRIBUTION OF
NCRES TO THE STABILIZATION OF ENERGY PRICES
Chile has changed a lot in recent years, but nothing compares to the transformation
experienced last October. We have seen the public reaction throughout our country to call
massively for legal, economic and social changes that will enable the fulfillment of the
legitimate aspirations of all and especially of the most vulnerable sectors.
The non-conventional Renewable Energy (NCRE) sector, almost entirely represented by
ACERA, has played a key role in the advances of the electricity market towards its
modernization , economic efficiency and sustainability. The intense competition brought by
member companies to the electricity sector, with projects based on clean energies such as
the sun, wind, the heat of the earth, the potential of waves and tides, organic waste and
water, is unmatched. They have mitigated electricity price hikes in addition to projecting
lower prices for future years, replacing gradually old expensive supply contracts, supported by
polluting power plants.
NCREs also have a strong link with our entire territory. The plants operate from Arica to Punta
Arenas, from the mountain sectors to the coast, and in the Chilean island territory. Each plant
coexists with the different communities of its neighboring cities and towns, including - on
many occasions - indigenous villages . This relationship with citizenship commits the industry
to being a responsible neighbor, solving the innumerable challenges with dialogue, empathy
and commitment.
That is why when President Sebastián Piñera pointed out that he would send to Congress a
draft to stabilize energy prices to regulated consumers, within the framework of the social
agenda announced on October 22, ACERA immediately declared its support, and
contributed proposals for improvement in order to refine the project entered through the
Senate on Friday, October 25.
The contribution of NCRE companies to the price stabilization mechanism will involve an
important effort for our sector, since the contracts of NCRE generators with the distribution
companies have been won in a strong price competition that limit the margins of this business
to efficient values far inferior to those before their arrival in the market. There is no doubt this
price stabilization will provide large benefits to the country, but will require additional efforts
from these clean energy generators.
However, we are convinced that it is an effort that we must make, in response to all the
citizens and neighbours who have received us in their territories, as well as in support of a
country that demands inclusive progress for everybody. We will work hard to ensure that this
law meets two fundamental objectives: allow regulated customers to access a better and
more stable rate, and ensure the long-term viability of companies and NCRE projects so that
they can continue developing in our country and thus continue bringing good news for Chile.
A new Chile, more united, more inclusive and greener.
Despite the cancellation of COP 25 in Chile, the climate crisis
continues, that’s why in ACERA we will continue with our
campaign #SoñemosEnergía2030 to highlight how important is
to combat the climate change.
To the videos already published by Ricardo Lagos, former
President of Chile, the Director of TECHO, Sebastián Bowen,
the journalist Paloma Avila, and many others, some new ones
have been added: meteorologist Michelle Adam, the President
and CEO of ACERA, the journalist Maria Elena Dressel, and
"30 Dreams for 2030" will end on November 21 with a seminar
entitled "Dreaming Energy: From Illusion to Practice", which
seeks to address how to make a reality the dreams presented
by the 30 characters who dreamed a different Chile by 2030,
considering the current situation of the country, to carry on a
conversation with a social perspective when it comes to solve
environmental issues.
Ministry of Energy and BancoEstado
launch first green consumption credit
The Minister of Energy, Juan Carlos Jobet, together with its
Finance peers, Felipe Larraín, of Environment, Carolina
Schmidt, and the president of BancoEstado, Arturo Tagle, gave
the go-ahead on the first green consumer credit. The initiative,
aimed at both clients and non-clients of BancoEstado, seeks to
finance energy efficiency projects and renewable energy for
homes, encouraging the use of clean and friendly sources,
through projects of thermal insulation, solar energy, air
conditioning and efficient ventilation.
"This credit from BancoEstado that allows to finance the
installation of solar panels is good news, not only because the
installation of solar energy in the houses contributes to take
care of the environment, but also takes care of the pocket. With
the installation of solar panels households could have savings
of up to $300,000 a year, which means between 80 and 90%
of the monthly electricity bill," explained the energy minister.
It should be noted that this product adds to other initiatives
developed by BancoEstado in the same vein, such as the
Ecohousing Mortgage Credit and the Green Credit for SMEs.
Executive Director of ACERA excels
in international events
ACERA AG. has worked constantly to position Chile as a leader in
renewable energies. It is in this context that its Executive Director,
Carlos Finat, was invited by the Italian Agency for Foreign Trade
(ICE) on a study tour to Italy during the month of October.
During the visit he held meetings with the regulator of the
electricity sector in Italy (ARERA), with various ministries, with the
ENEA Casacci Research Center, and with companies from that
country. Likewise, Finat participated in a meeting with companies
of the ANIE Federation (Milan) where Chile was presented as a
destination for investments in renewable energies.
"It was an intense agenda, which allowed us to know the roles and
responsibilities of the different institutions and companies that
operate the electricity sector in Italy. We also learned about the
advanced electrical system simulation and equipment testing
capabilities in that country," commented the Association's
Executive Director.
ACERA was also invited to participate in the "Public-Private
Dialogue on Energy Modernization" seminar, organized by APEC
within the framework of Energy Week that took place during the
week of October 14 in the city of Antofagasta. Finat shared a panel
with Cerro Dominador, Canada's Ministry of Natural Resources,
and Utility Advantage, where new technologies and regulatory
modernization were analyzed in depth.
ACERA took part in the launch
of Turner’s #DesafíoTierra
Chilevision, CNN Chile and the Football Channel, all Turner
channels, made an unprecedented editorial alliance to develop
Desafío Tierra, a cross-platform proposal that seeks to disseminate
and amplify the issues related to care for the environment, as well
as to mobilize citizens to take an active role in this purpose.
In line with the pillars that underpin ACERA, its Executive Director,
Carlos Finat, and its President, José Ignacio Escobar, participated
in the launch of the initiative, which aims to contribute to the
discussion of the care of the planet through education, concrete
action and collaborative work. All in a close, friendly and familiar
style. The first call received the title of Plastic Challenge, which
invites citizens to become a leader and to be mobilized to
generate effective changes in their environment.
The event, held at Turner Chile's headquarters, was led by its
executive chairman Jorge Carey and the director of corporate and
editorial management, María Paz Epelman. In addition, authorities
such as the Minister of Environment, Carolina Schmidt, the
Minister of Science, Andrés Couve, and Senators Carolina Goic,
Francisco Chahuán, and Guido Girardi, as well as several Mayors
MEET OUR
MEMBERS
Luis is Chilean, born and raised in Santiago, married and with three university-aged
children. He is an Electrical Engineer from the Catholic University of Chile, with an
MBA from the Adolfo Ibáñez University.
He enjoys the outdoor life and takes the opportunity of walking whenever he can.
Working with renewable energies has allowed him to know incredible places in
different parts of the world, coinciding with another of the things he likes to do the
most, travel. He's fond of reading, "I'm always reading two or three books at once,"
he says.
Why did you decide to direct your career to the energy industry?
My love of renewable energy comes since I was in school. At that time, I installed at my parents'
house a hose all over the roof to get hot water, with no more energy than the sun.
With the first salary I received I bought a solar generation kit that had a regulator where you
could plug a radio and a pair of direct current ampoules, along with a monocrystalline module of
20 W (the one I still have as a souvenir). I installed it in the house as a backup system in case of
power outage and then we used it in a cabin that did not have access to the mains. I learned that
non-conventional renewable energy had a role to play in our society and that they are part of the
solution to have clean, self-reliable and cheap energy.
Luis
Ljubetic
Manager
lljubetic@coener.cl
Currently, Luis is Manager of Coener, where he has tried to capture the love for what he does.
"We have achieved a very good working environment, which is challenging, since you have to be
constantly studying and applying what you have learned. Knowing that what we do is relevant to
society and those who are to come is very motivating," he says. He assures that this culture has
allowed them to deliver a high-quality service customers, solving complex problems and
accompanying them to the end.
We have two areas of work in Coener: Consulting and engineering of renewable generation
plants and Operation and maintenance of generation plants.
Which are the latest news or changes introduced by your company
Last year a Chilean economic group joined the property, allowing us to access more resources
and accelerate the company's growth.
What are the main projects -or themes- you have been recently working on concerning
Renewable Energies?
We are working appraising solar plants and mini-hydro power plants that are on the market for
sale. Also, we are developing the engineering of a large-scale solar plant and a wind farm of the
same characteristics. All this together with advisory services for connecting projects of different
sizes.
Luis believes that renewable energies are fundamental to the development of the country, since
Chile is a net importer of coal, oil and gas. "If we manage to lower this dependency, we will
literally stop burning the money,"he says.
"The impacts of these plants are much smaller than those of the traditional generation. The issue
to be solved is its variability, but I have no doubt that, within a few years, storage technologies
will be economically competitive and the insertion of renewable energy into our matrix will reach
100% and the electricity market as we know it today will disintegrate," stresses the Coener
Manager.
For Luis, one of the most important aspects of renewable energy, is that they allow to generate
energy with minimal greenhouse gas emissions. "The generation industry produces about 25% of
emissions, so the installation of renewable energy will imply a noticeable change in these
numbers by replacing thermal power plants."
Under that premise, and considering ACERA's work,
member of the Association?
why would you recommend being a
ACERA is an association where common themes and situations that require a more powerful
voice than that of an individual company are shared. In addition, it is a very good instance to
network and know what is going on with the development of this market in Chile.
In line with the #SoñemosEnergía2030 Campaign carried out by the Association, what
would your renewable dream be by 2030?
I dream a country where environmental, social and economic priorities have converged. A Chile
with a clear path of development and prosperity for our homeland.

Marta is Spanish but lives in Chile since 2007, and has two children. She has a
Degree in Economic Sciences, a Diploma in Business Management and Marketing,
and a Master’s Degree in Renewable Energy.
Her favorite hobbies are sport, nature, and reading. She came into the energy world
by chance and, without noticing it, has worked for 25 years in the industry.
The GES Manager describes her company as a global market leader in Construction
and Engineering Services for renewable energy projects.
What products or services do your company deliver and to what type(s) of
Renewable Energy?
Marta
Alonso
General Manager South America
GES – GLOBAL ENERGY SERVICES
GES specializes in Engineering, Construction, Wind Turbine Installation, EPC Contracts of
Photovoltaic Solar Parks and in the construction of solar installations on decks.
Which are the latest news or changes introduced by your company?
We have consolidated in markets with a focus on growth of renewable energies such as
Iberia, North Africa, and Latin America.
We provide services in different parts of the world, mainly focused on Chile, Spain,
Argentina, Peru, Colombia, France, and Portugal.
Marta comments that the world of energy captivated her bit by bit more than 20 years
ago, as she considers it very fascinating. In the industry she managed to bring together
two of her biggest battles, positioning women in masculinized industries and boosting
renewable energies as leaders in the energy matrix.
However, despite the progress that the renewable sector has made and how fast its
progress at the national level has been, Marta does not hesitate to describe the
participation of renewable energies in the country's electricity system as " still scarce and
evolving."
As part of the Chilean Association of Renewable Energy and Storage since 2014, Marta
has been aligned with one of its main pillars, the fight against climate change.
It is in this path that renewable energies take on a leading role, and Martha recognizes it.
"Renewable energy is one of the main elements of transformation to mitigate the effects
of climate change," she says.
You have been in the renewable association for five years, several as Treasurer
Director. Why would you recommend being a member of the Association?
Because it is the association par excellence of Renewable Energy in Chile.
In line with the #SoñemosEnergía2030 Campaign carried out by the Association,
what would your renewable dream be by 2030?
I dream that Chile significantly increases its renewable generation.
