Tina began looking for publishers of children’sbooks online and the first one she saw was aChristian faith publishing company. “I sent anemail requesting a packet and got a reply thenext day. The publisher told me it was such atimely topic, and they accepted my manuscript.”The book, which has sold hundreds of copies,has resonated with kids and parents, alike.Tina has done several readings at schools andchurches, with more planned in the future.“It’s such an important subject,” says Tina.Stopbullying.gov is a federal governmentwebsite managed by the U.S. Department ofHealth and Human Services. The site definesbullying as “unwanted, aggressive behavioramong school-aged children that involvesa real or perceived power imbalance. Thebehavior is repeated, or has the potential to berepeated, over time. Both kids who are bulliedand those who bully others may have serious,lasting problems. For behavior to be consideredbullying, it must be aggressive and include andimbalance of power (such as physical strength oraccess to embarrassing information)and/or repetition.”“Sadly, children can’t just go home to escapebullying,” says Tina. “It follows them home withcyber bullying, which has become epidemic.”Tina says her research shows that 160,000 kidsskip school every day, often to escape bullying.“There are 282,000 reported physical assaultsevery day in secondary schools around thecountry, and 75% of all school shootings stemfrom the shooter having been bullied.”Tina says the book was God-given. “He gaveme a gift. I have always written my thoughts,but I never thought I was worthy of being awriter.But writing is the gift God has given me.”Tina has ideas for future books as well.“I’d like to do a children’s book on appearances,and because I write a daily devotion thatI post on Facebook, friends have encouraged meto write a 365-day devotion book.”Tina retired as district director for Center-Point Energy in 2017 after 38 years with thecompany. She has a passion for giving back to thecommunity and does so through her service onthe boards of several organizations includingthe American Heart Association, The SalvationArmy, and the Methodist Children’s Home. Forthe past ten years, she has served as chair for theRidgeland Chamber Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast.Tina lives in Madison with her husband,Terry Lakey.
