AŞIK VEYSEL

Aşık Veysel was born in 1894. He caught smallpox at the age of seven, often a

deadly disease. He survived the illness, but lost eyesight of the left eye. After an

accident, he lost sight of the right eye as well, which left him virtually blind. This

is when, with his father's encouragement, he took possession of a saz and

started playing it. He was instructed by a friend of his father, who taught him

works of the great "aşık"s such as Pir Sultan Abdal, Karacaoğlan, Dertli, and

Rühsati.

The events around and following the first world war and his

He also started to write poems on universal

themes, and touring the country, where his fame

ultimately resides. Veysel rejected an

opportunity of eyesight when advances in

medical science made an operation possible late

in his life. He died in 1973; He was 78 years old.

Most of his works were performed by so many

blindness, have had a deep impact on Aşık Veysel's art,

and generally may be summed up under the rubrics of loss

and death. He was left virtually alone in the village with

women (all men went to the war). After the war, he got

married to Esma, and they had a son and a daughter from

this marriage. His daughter did not live long either. All

these losses packed into a short period of time are felt

intensely in some of his best work such as "Benim Sadik

Yarim Kara Topraktir", "Uzun Ince Bir Yoldayim", and

"Dostlar Beni Hatirlasin".

"Uzun İnce B r Yoldayım", wh ch s one of the best known works of

Aşık Veysel and s st ll so popular among fans of Turk sh folk mus c,

translated nto Engl sh: "I Walk On A Long And Narrow Road"

Turkish Lyrics

Uzun ince bir yoldayım,

Gidiyorum gündüz gece,

Bilmiyorum ne haldeyim,

Gidiyorum gündüz gece.

Dünyaya geldiğim anda,

Yürüdüm aynı zamanda,

İki kapılı bir handa

Gidiyorum gündüz gece.

Uykuda dahi yürüyom,

Kalmaya sebep arıyom,

Gidenleri hep görüyom,

Gidiyorum gündüz gece

Kırk dokuz yıl bu yollarda

Ovada dağda çöllerde,

Düşmüşüm gurbet ellerde

Gidiyorum gündüz gece.

Düşünülürse derince,

Uzak görünür görünce,

Yol bir dakka miktarınca

Gidiyorum gündüz gece.

Şaşar Veysel iş bu hale

Gah ağlaya gahi güle,

Yetişmek için menzile

Gidiyorum gündüz gece

English Lyrics

I am on a long and narrow road,

I walk day and night;

I do not know what state I am in

I walk day and night;

The moment I came into the world,

I walked at the same time

At an inn with two doors

I walk day and night.

I walk even while sleeping,

I am looking for a reason to stay

I always see the ones that left

I walk day and night

Forty-nine years on these roads

In the valleys, mountains, and deserts

In foreign lands I make my way

I walk day and night

If deeply thought about

The goal seems very far from sight

While the road is only a minute long

I walk day and night

Veysel does wonder at this state

Lament or laughter, which is right?

Still to attain the distant goal

I walk day and night

Icon of Mistic Music With Its Peaceful Voice ;

'Ney'

Today, the ney s known as the

Turk sh nstrument and has

become a symbol of Suf mus c.

Instead of play ng, wh ch s used

for general mus cal nstruments,

the term blow ng s used for ney.

Blow ng here has a f gurat ve mean ng. It takes ts source

from the fact that n Islam, Allah blew the soul wh le

affected by th s metaphor s; It s the sound of "Hû" when

blow ng the ney, just l ke "Tü" sounds when play ng the

Internationally Known, Award-winning

Turkish Director, Screenwriter and

Photographer ; Nuri Bilge Ceylan

Ceylan was born in Istanbul on

26 January 1959. His interest in

photography started at the age

of 15.After graduating from

university with a bachelor of

science degree in electrical

engineering, he went to London

and Kathmandu, Nepal, to

decide what to do in life. Then

he went back to Ankara, Turkey,

to do military service. When he

was in the army, he discovered

that cinema would give shape to

his life.

Ceylan's films deal with the estrangement of the

individual,

existentialism, the monotony of human lives, and the

details of everyday life. He uses static shots and long

takes, usually in natural settings. He is known for filming

his protagonist from behind, which, in his view, leaves the

audiences to speculate on the brooding emotions of

characters

whose faces are obscured. Ceylan's first films were made

on low

budgets, with casts generally consisting of amateur

actors, most of whom were his family and neighbours.

Every year, April 23 National Sovereignty and Children’s Day, which

Atatürk made a present to all the world’s children, is celebrated

with the same enthusiasm. So, what is the story of this date.

The Grand National Assembly met for the first time in

Ankara in 23 April 1920 during the Turkish War of

Independence to lay the foundations for an

independent and modern republic

Since 1927 it has also become Children's Day,

when the founder of the Turkish Republic,

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, dedicated April 23rd

to the children of Turkey to recognise that

children are the future of the nation. With

this, Turkey became the first country in the

world to celebrate an official Children's Day,

as a gift to the children in Turkey and

around the world.
