tissue guards + 1 folded map of Switzerland in colour, original
richly (gilt & coloured) illustrated clothbound (image
of the Matterhorn / Cervin). With the orig. clothbacked
jacket with gilt ornament on spine, top-edge gilt. A very

Interesting guide for the anglo- american tourist, the author takes
the reader to the charming Switzerland of mountain zigzag, the
good old Switzerland of flower-boarderpaths through shady
woods far away from the money-making in the busy city-centers,
to the ‘Unknown Switzerland’ thus. It is not quite a trip on
$10.- a day, but he prefers the peaceful and patriarchal waysides
for four or five francs a day instead of the big hotels where you
have (had) to be dressed-up with knickerbockers and robbed
stockings, blue veil round your hat, binocular slung around your
shoulder and alpenstock in hand (from the introduction). The
book includes large sections on the Engadine, the Valais is very
well presented with chapters on the Glacier of Arolla & Rosegg,
further he writes on smugglers, catastrophes, the doctoress of
Hérémence, dinners, a bear hunt (p. 156) guides and mountain
climbers. A Chapter on Gruyère as well as Victor Tissot was the
first curator of the local museum there, the ‘Gruyère Museum’
in Bulle (Canton of Fribourg). Still a passionate book to read.

436. TÖPFFER, Rodolphe (1799-1846): Tour du lac
(de Genève). autographié chez Schmid à Genève, 1841,
in-8° oblong, carte lithographiée + 40 p. dont le titre
illustré, avec 16 dessins à la plume en pleine page et 1 à
demi-page en-texte, le tout autographié, reliure en plein
maroquin brun plus récent, large dentelle dorée sur les
plats, dos richement orné, tranches dorées. Brochure
originale illustrée conservée. (rel. signée: Durvand rel.).

Première édition. Töpffer a autographié quatorze voyages entre
1832 et 1842 dont celui-ci fait partie. En 1841, Töpffer entreprit
ce tour du lac de 4 jours, avec sa femme, le prof. Marcel
et 21 élèves. La carte lithographiée au début du livre montre
le chemin qu’ils suivirent. Cet album joliment autographié
par l’auteur fut tiré à petit nombre et est pour cela quasiment
introuvable. L’ouvrage fut intégré dans les ‘Premiers voyages
en zigzag’ en 1844.
La reliure est de Lucien Durvand, (1852-1924), qui créa son
propre atelier vers 1890 à Paris. Associé avec Thiret, c’est sous
le nom de Durvand-Thiret que nous le voyons figurer jusqu’à
la fin du XIXe siècle. Ensuite on le voit sous son propre nom,
jusqu’en 1924 date de son décès. (Flety Dictionnaire des relieurs
