Morgenberghorn, Niesen, Stockhorn, Doldenhorn und Alt Els.
Die beiden Tafeln zeigen u.a. Messinstrumente.

“Bel ouvrage classique sur la description des richesses naturelles
des Alpes” remarque Perret, qui donne d’abord la 2e traduction
de «Das Tierleben der Alpenwelt» (1853), et celle-ci de 1859, de
Vouga (jusqu’à p. 513), prof. d’histoire naturelle à Neuchâtel et
de Schimper, conservateur du Musée de Strasbourg. L’ouvrage
est réparti dans les trois sections suivantes: La région montagneuse
(alt. 2500’ à 4000’). / La région alpine (alt. 4000’ à 7000’).
/ La région des neiges (alt. 7000’ à 14000’). Les xylogravures
montrent e.a.: débordement de torrent, groupe d’érables, une
avalanche, lac alpin, groupe d’aroles et 19 planches de divers

d’Aletsch. Les gravures sur bois représentent la Mer de Glace,
les Drus, la source de l’Arveiron, les Bossons, etc.”.

de J.D. Forbes, engendrant entre les deux hommes de savantes

First edition. This book forms a natural sequel to the first descriptive
part of the «Glaciers of the Alps». The two engraved
plates show drawings of the Weisshorn from the Riffel, and an
attractive view of the Matterhorn. In this volume Tyndall’s climb
of the Weisshorn is published. Tyndall, due to a major dispute
with Leslie Stephen, had refused to have this account published
in «Peaks, passes and glaciers», and had therefore published this
separate volume. Tyndall was professor of natural philosophy at
the Royal Institution of Great Britain. With his friend Huxley he
went to Switzerland to study the motion of glaciers. This work

un des plus hauts et beaux sommets des Alpes et participa

mentions this work (cf. 4354) but does not list it separately.
